Palestinians prepare to battle 'Zionist editing' on Wikipedia
Association of Palestinian Journalists chairman calls on Palestinians to prepare for 'PR war' on Israel.
By Avi IssacharoffThe next battle in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be fought on the pages of the internet site Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia which anyone can edit.
Abed A-Nassar, chairman of the Association of Palestinian Journalists, has already begun preparing for the conflict, calling on Palestinian institutions to make Wikipedia pages more pro-Palestinian.
His call follows a recent article in Haaretz on a class organized by settlers to teach supporters how to register and edit Wikipedia pages, in order to make them more representative of the 'Zionist' viewpoint.
Organizers of the Israeli course say their aim is twofold: to affect Israeli public opinion by having people who share their ideological viewpoint take part in writing and editing for the Hebrew version, and to write in English so Israel's image can be bolstered abroad.
Palestinians must now launch a counter-attack against Israel's latest "public relations war", Nassar said.

Not everybody in the world knows the truth about Israel and their oppression of the Palestinian people, but more and more understand this every day. Because of this, Israeli propaganda will not take root and flourish as it has in the past. The very act of proclaiming that Israel will engage in a widespread "PR" effort will arouse resentment in people. Propaganda, and it's less offensive cousin, PR, is simply an attempt to manipulate people and their minds and opinions. People understand this and they don't like the idea of being manipulated. The sort of things that work are real things. Israel should engage in building homes for Palestinians, improve their infrastructure, give them jobs with a fair wage, etc. These things can be easily done on a small scale and will make a hugePR splash. It will likely even fool people who don't know the truth. Rather than make a small investment with a huge impact, Israel will continue to export double talk and lies and spin which will only work against them. Whoever thought that these people were smart?
The battle began a good while ago; Arabs have been weaving a web of lies which the international anti-Israel movement is only to happy to accept as gospel's truth. Arabs will have no problem making Wikipedia pages more pro Palestinians- they will get lots of help from people, including Israelis, who will be more then ready to help propagate the false Palestinian narrative dished out these past 60 years. It will be interesting to see if they will discuss in these pages how their misery has been self-inflicted, how they have cleverly diverted attention from their corrupted leaders, totalitarian rule and economic failures, all of their own making. Will they ever acknowledge that their Arab brothers have manipulated them, stoking the fire of hatred, encouraging the Palestinians to play the victim role so that the game could go on and on? Such a pity that the Arabs did not accept the UN's 1947 two-state partition plan – all the terrible wars and misery on both sides could have been avoided. Instead, Israel continues to be subjected to relentless hatred and threats of annihilation, and is left alone to fight the battle of all battles – survival of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel.
Ideologues, who like their Zionist analogs who were touting their efforts to ideologically cleanse Wikipedia. It is clear they don't have a clue how the Wikipedia is edited, how feckless and futile their efforts are and will be.
enmity to Israel, instead of being the beacon of rapprochement and reconciliation? Why it always the Palestinian or the Egyptian associations of journalists, lawyers, writers etc that are the staunchest opponents of the peace with Israel? Why this cheap demagogery? Do they prefer a war?
He should focus on video, rather than words. One short video of incidents by settlers is worth more than any amount of words, especially from a source no-one relies on now. Then the agencies could pick up the stories. Remember 'shamutra' ? All we get are video of the wall demos, who are seen as protesters and so it doesn't have the same impact as everyday disrespect. IDF don't have any opinion-swaying footage to support Israel's aim, but they know video is gold-dust and still have a go via their youtube account. The amount of video footage from the West Bank or Gaza is woeful.
The new generation of information age "warriors" - I'm sure it's coming to a theater near you. There are only so many ways one can twist facts before they simply break...
They have websites too numerous to mention icluding Memeri, and many similar ones.Like the jihadists sites. If they decide to go there,Israel can even recounter it with vengeance if it wishes. They are like kiddy, winkies in their mentality. How about Youtube? Just go there even better than Wiki.
For it to be valid in Wiki, it must be sourced. Only primary sources are credible. Any repository, or dissemination of of primary source material is as valid as Wiki. Perhaps more so when one cares to take the time to actually read through documents. The Hasbara version of UNSC Res 242 is a laugh... http://wp.me/PDB7k-6r
rather than the history which palestinian propagandists would love to have us all ignore and forget,....if it were up to these folks , muchlike the the religious zealots in the us, no one would ever know about much of history because it would be erased, distorted, and re-written despite all the data, the sources, and the evidence . All this would be done as a matter of convenience and to reconcile all the insecurities of said zealots . Please , bring it on and you will lose
Israel and it,s apologists are speading the truth and Palestinians are spreading terror. Yup--that will be the narrative. Remember Palestinian boycotts are "Economic terrorism --also different from Israel withholding Palestinian money. The zionist mind is a great contribution to science---if one could only open it up.
Wikipedia relies on the wisdom of crowds for the impartiality and reliability of its content. This concept fails when a topic generates either too little or too much enthusiasm: a) if the subject is so specialised that no crowd can be generated b) if the subject is so contentious that impartiality is sacrificed. Maybe one day Wikipedia will implement an more appropriate model to handle these two cases. In the meanwhile, we should look elsewhere for useful encyclapedic information, or even informed opinion regarding anything bearing on the legitimacy of Israel and Palestine.
Interesting choice of words. One needs to tell him there's a backroom for conversations where facts are presented, instead of vandalizing Wikipedia.
99% of Jews don't know both the standard US aworld history reference, An Encyclopedia of World History by Prof Dr William Langer of Harvard as well as the Cambridge HIstory of Poland to 1939 are full of anti-Semitic cracks, as was a mystery novel by Elisabeth Peterson, and the absence by ommission of the pre-Roman Jewish kingdoms in 99% of the maps in Colleen McCulloch's novels of ancient Rome. I don't support 95% of what the "settlers" do, but considering the violent anti-Semitism, let alone biased attacks on Israel from even Jewish professors at Oxford and even amongst Jewish elected officials, I can't say anything about "good job" to any Jews who want to defend Jewish views or the FACTS in online reference sources. I have, for too long, watched anti-semitic, including self-hating Jews write lies about Jews, Judaism and Jewish history not to be happy someone is doing something to redress the outrageous anti-Semitic slant of too much "generally accepted" stanard history reference sources.
Wikipedia is no longer a trusted resource anyway. Why waste time and effort? What you must do to counter is do as the zionists do and get thousands of Blog sites and script them to automatically update for the same content. They spam the search engines and get top placement on all subjects. This is what you must go after. Wikipedia is no longer a trusted source for the reason that it can be edited by any shmuck with a keyboard
You people are just pathetic .

The Palestinian supporters are already doing fine. Example: Gaza Flotilla Raid. It reads like it was written by IHH. There is no mention of BBC Panorama in the discussion of media. Any attempts to edit result in return to within minutes to Turkish version. The Left already owns Wiki.
the claim of "10,000 tons" of humanitarian cargo to a construct that makes it a report, rather than a fact. The entire Mavi Marmara cargo was transferred to Gaza in six trucks, and weighted 12,600 pounds. Do you know what 10,000 tons of cargo looks like? I know you don't care, but do you know?
The ships were carrying 10,000 tons according to wiki. You want to change it to 'the ship' Mavi Marmara...... Why? (BTW I don't particularly subscribe to wiki on the I/P matter)
It is well-known that the Marmara was mainly a passenger ship and not for cargo.
Wikipedia is very much pro-Palestinian, and there are very few Wikipedia pages that are in any way supportive of Israel, Judaism or Zionism. Any attempt to modify a page to reflect Israeli perspectives, is reverted back to its original form, as soon as the page is edited and saved. For example, just try and to make any changes to the pages of Sinn Feinn or Mogadishu, for example, and see how long the changes stay put.
Cute....
the wiki is filled with zionists trying to distort information.
Implying presenting facts and historic events that aren't comfortable for you means to distort information. With that spirit I wonder just how deep Wikipedia will get vandalized by people like you who just don't understand how Wikipedia works.
The Hasbara..... http://wp.me/PDB7k-Y
Positive step although following the lead of the likes of the settlers should not have been the case. For everything done do ensure the documentation is credible and properly put together. World wide fortified empathy should be an assured result for all such efforts.
The Palestinian viewpoint is clearly supported by the overwhelming body of facts, international law, and basic morals. All you need to do is make sure these are expressed, particularly the facts. You do not need to write "slanted" articles or ignore unfavorable facts; this would hurt your credibility. Leave the disingenuous arguments to the pro-occupation camp, which does not have facts on its side.
While I agree the underdog tends to attract more support, the moral high ground and facts are on Israel's side, not the pro terrorist camp. And yes, vandalizing Wikipedia pages in favor of Palestinians would hurt what credibility they have.

I realize these guys are just responding to the settlers' attempts to spin wikipedia to their perspective, but they're both missing the point. wikipedia isn't wrong because it doesn't reflect your perspective. the point of it is that it's not supposed to have any perspective, just the straightforward facts.
Facts on the palestinian side. We just need to present the facts.
You might be able to edit, but any edit which lacks citations and a non-ideological point of view will not stand.
as u all know
As Wikipedia is very anti-Palestinian and controlled rather an open platform. Most articles related to Palestine are clearly linked to Israel and provide unreliable information. Even if you go and edit, you will immediately get a warning of plagirism. I think a campaign like this would let Wikipedia's control on these articles down!
You join a conversation and present facts, only if it is widely agreed upon then the page is edited. It is indeed vandalizing when you do it without approval and facts.
Are you sure? I never tried to edit Wikipedia without scientific references. Even when I do that I find them sending me warnings. There are many instances on Wikipedia where you can clearly see that its not really a place where everyone can edit. Everyone can edit as long as its not against Admins viewpoints, which is really sad. For instance, you go to find an article about "Palestinian terrorism" while at the same time there is nothing about Israeli terrorism. The funny thing is that while Palestinian resistance is being fabricated to terrorism, you can't find anything about Israeli "crimes=terrorism" against the Palestinians. So in what sense such policies would meet the Wiki concept? In the sense of political fabrication of course. Then you find many articles about prophet Mohammed, while I can understand the depiction of these photos, as they argue, for informative purposes, I don't really understand why there is a special article on the "depictions of muhammad". A clear unjustified provocation. I would like to see these articles locked and its only though such campaigns that tap the talents of many people this can be achieved.
Few things,, even if you have what you perceive as scientific reference, you are just one opinion, there is a background conversation on the topic questioned, and you engage in a chat with other people who counter evidence and such. You do not edit things on your own just because you have a link that is supposedly backing you up. You said an Admin's view point is supreme, but no one cares who started the page as it is likely a popular subject by many people with internet connection, and you'll see many people discussing it in the background, the only thing a single person may influence, is the creation of a new article like what you mentioned in "depictions of Muhammad" which you can expect following such a popular topic where Muslims world wide burned cars for, Nevertheless it is the internet, and you'll find all manner of 'provocative' articles. Just in this response you show biased attitude where you claim Palestinian terrorism is not terrorism(really now?) yet I'm sure I could find a few pro palestinian made pages regarding the seldom Israeli terrorism. Furthermore, you conclude your post that the reason you want this political campaign is actually based on religious reasons as you want, what you perceive, as the closure of 'anti-islamic' topics like those showing the face of Muhammad. Sorry, but that's not what the Palestinian campaign is about, and out of all places, the Internet is the last to surrender to anti free speech and information movements like the one you wish for.
Although I find some amusement reading your post I disagree in many places. A scientific reference means a peer-reviwed article, a book, or some other forms of scientific references, is not in any way a link as you describe it. These have been rejected and a peer-reviwed article is not only a single perspective and when a contributed adds this to Wikipedia it must be added, if you disagree, you threaten the credibility of that articles and also try to bound it to a single point of view like what we find in the article called Palestine, for instance. The whole article does not discussion any connections with the Palestinians and when you read it you conclude this is a Jewish/Israeli land. About the biased attitude, let me tell you something, Hamas is doing terrorism when it attacks buses filled with civilians. No one can argue about it. But, at the same time, Israelis attacking civilians everywhere using Merkava tanks, F16, and other deadly weaponry is an absolute form of terrorism. You can't argue that Israel is not an occupation. And I am sure you have read what an occupation means and what it entails also for the occupied people. I assure you if such views is to be shared on Wikipedia, they will be automatically blocked. Just look at Twitter during the Gaza Flotilla issue. They just blocked it! You talk about free speech: so why did Israel denied entry for Noam Chomsky? Why was Hanan Zubi attacked at the Kenneset? You know what I mean..
IS MONEY NEED BY THE STARVING PAL. TO DO THIS
to change the Worlds perception of Israel. Get real!
Take a small peek under the grime of the Hasbara ... http://talknic.wordpress.com/
Great initiative, this had to happen a long time ago, but it is never to late.
Israel had the jump start on internet access. These zionists rushed out and bought domains pertaining to Palestine with 10yr domain name ownership. They use them as parking sites with no content or sites with a pro-Israel slant. The Palestinians are quite behind.
What is best, a war with words or weapons ....
