Obama to Netanyahu, Abbas: Don't let the chance for peace slip away

Prime Minister Netanyahu says seeking 'historic compromise' ahead of working dinner with Abbas, Jordanian King Abdullah and Egypt's Mubarak at the White House to launch direct Mideast peace talks.

U.S. President Barack Obama urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Wednesday not to let the chance for peace slip away as he opened a U.S.-sponsored summit to relaunch direct talks shadowed by Middle East violence.

But in the wake of a second West Bank shooting attack against Israelis in as many days and a persistent deadlock over settlements, Obama acknowledged skepticism "in some quarters" about his prospects for succeeding where so many U.S. leaders have failed and said he was under no illusions about the challenges ahead.

Wading into hands-on peacemaking on the eve of restarting face-to-face negotiations after a 20-month hiatus, Obama brought both sides together for ceremonial handshakes at the White House and a commitment to try to forge within a year a deal on Palestinian statehood.

"As I told each of them today, this moment of opportunity may not soon come again. They cannot afford to let it slip away," Obama said after one-on-one talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Speaking ahead of a working dinner at the White House, Netanyahu said Wednesday that he had come to the Washington peace summit that "to figure out a historic compromise" with the Palestinians.

The dinner included Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Jordanian King Abdullah II, the Quartet's envoy to the Middle East Tony Blair, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Netanyahu.

Netanyahu mentioned the attacks of the last days, using them to highlight the importance of Israel's security needs. Netanyahu said that Israel would not allow terrorists to block the path to Middle East peace. Any peace deal, he declared, must be one that guarantees security.

"Peace does not sit well with the idea that you drive down a road and a firing squad guns you down," Netanyahu was quoted as having told Obama during their two-hour meeting.

The prime minister spoke of the need for a "historic compromise."

"The Jewish people are no strangers in our homeland, the land of our forefathers," he said. "But we recognize that another people share this land with us. And I came here today to find a historic compromise that will enable both peoples to live in peace, security and dignity," Netanyahu said.

Addressing Abbas directly, the prime minister said that "If we work together, we can take advantage of the great benefits afforded by our unique place under the sun. Our geography, history, culture, climate and the talents of our peoples can create unprecedented opportunities in tourism, trade, industry, energy, water and so much more."

Peace "must also be defended against its enemies," Netanyahu said. "We want the skyline of the West Bank to be dominated by apartment towers, not missiles. We want the roads of the West Bank to flow with commerce, not terrorists. We left Lebanon, we got terror. We left Gaza, we got terror. We want to ensure that territory we concede will not be turned into a third Iranian sponsored terror enclave aimed at the heart of Israel."

"President Abbas, we cannot erase the past," Netanyahu said. "But it is within our power to change the future. Thousands of years ago, on the very hills where Israelis and Palestinians live today, the Jewish prophet Isaiah and the other prophets of my people envisioned a lasting peace for all mankind."

"Let today be a first step, however small, in our joint effort to realize that vision," he said.

Egypt's Mubarak also addressed the White House ahead of the joint dinner. Speaking in Arabic with a simultaneous translator, Mubarak called on Israel to freeze settlement activity and "seize the opportunity" for peace.

Mubarak called Israeli settlement-building in Palestinian territories contrary to international law, adding that failure to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians has generated great frustration among the populace of the region.

Abbas also addressed the White House, condemning the latest spate of violence against Israelis in the West Bank. He pledged to "spare no effort" to reach a peace agreement with the Israelis.

"We do not want at all that any blood be shed," Abbas said, adding that a comprehensive peace should correct historical injustices.

Abbas reiterated the Palestinian demand for a freeze on all Israeli settlements construction on land the Palestinians seek for a future state, including East Jerusalem.

Jordan's king, who also spoke, called on the Israelis and Palestinians to move quickly to address the most difficult obstacles in achieving a final peace settlement.

Abdullah warned that the negotiations must produce results.

"Time is not on our side," he said, adding that achieving a deal within the one-year goal would require "sparing no effort in addressing all final status issues."

Obama maintained that final status issues must be on the table, including establishing borders of a Palestinian state, the Palestinian demands for the right of Arab refugees to return to Israel, and the future of Jerusalem and Israeli settlements.

I'd like to be optimistic, but I do not see any prospects for success. Mr. Abbas will come back empty handed, with nothing tangible to show his people. What a tragedy for the Palestinians to have one of their own continually betraying their causse?

Viva USA for its relentless efforts to achieve peace despite immense amount of difficulty. Here is the deal that I mentioned before: 1)Jerusalem : The Clinton plan with minor modifications. 2) Final borders June 67 with some agreed upon modifications. 3)Settlements: large blocks annex to Israel. replace lands annexed with equal value lands that Israel held before 67. All other settlements will be dismantled. Settlers to be compensated. 4) Palestinian refugees: Right of return to Gaza and the West Bank with compensations. 5) Security: Joint security forces in the West bank, borders and points of entry 6) US, Israel, oil - rich Arab States, UN, EU, Australia and Japan to sponsor compensations moving and resettling expenses for Palestinian refugees and and for evacuating Jewish.settlers. 7) All Arab Countries sign peace agreement and establish normal diplomatic relations with Both Israel and the new Palestinian State.

Netnayahu ran for elections on a policy of "no Palestinian state" (only autonomy), and he was not ready to expose himself as a fraud right after the elections and announce that he actually accepts a Palestinian state. That took him 4 months to do (in a speech in June 2009). As of now, Netanyahu refrained from taking a vote in the government about this change in policy, nor in Likud. Will Netanyahu dare to go all the way for peace and then have to "face the music" of the hardliners? I hope so, but one wouldn't know until the very end. Barak is braver, and also needs peace more because otherwise his party will pull out of the coalition and he will lose his job. But even Barak got cold feet in Shepherdstown when he was to complete the negotiations of peace with Syria. Let us hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.

A "good President" applies pressure on Israel

When one looks back, it is clearly seen that the greater the "friendship" of a US President to Israel (meaning that he applies less pressure on Israel to pursue peace), the less is accomplished. Our greatest "friends" were Clinton and G. Dubya Bush. Clinton did everything Barak asked him to do, including in Camp David. The result: no peace, only Intifada II. Dubya Bush came up with the Roadmap, a plan but no pressure on Israel. Nothing useful resulted. Looking back at the "bad" presidents, Nixon helped Israel with military equipment in Yom Kippur, but then prevented Israel from vanquishing the Egyptian Third Army. He preserved Egypt's honor, and peace became possible. Carter was even insulting in his pressure on Begin. But he ended up god-fathering the Peace Agreement with Sadat. Papa Bush was publicly pushing Shamir, even causing his regime to fall, This resulted in the Madrid Conference which led to Oslo. Obama seems to be made of different stuff. He aspires to do what is "right", more than what political considerations dictate, as he did with healthcare. If the Likud brings upon us an imposed international solution, so be it. The cure will be better than the continuation of the present diseased situation.

Hamas has declared war. If Obama wants successful talks, he must stand aside while IDF rips Hamastan apart
    • Dr. L. Brnd
    • 02.09.10
    • 13:26

As with the previous Hamas suicide and rocket campaigns against peace, the only answer is destroying the Hamas leadership and infrastructure in Gaza which orders and directs these attacks. This is war, and it can not be handled as a "police matter", with "following leads", investigations and prosecutions. Since Hamas rejects any peace with Israel, massive moves against it can not be claimed by Abbas or Obama as "harming talks" - unless the two of them had this trap for Israel in mind all along. These moves should include strikes against Gaza leaders, Hamas imams and mosque bases, cutting off allpower and fuel, and returning the pre-"flotillaa" blockade. Total war. Obama must give Israel carte blanche, or no talks - Israel is not going to let its people be slaughtered as a "price of peace". Plus the talks are w waste of time since Hamas is showing that they and the 50% of "palestinians" they represent, who voted them into Gaza - want to continue fighting, noo peace. Silence while IDF blasts Gaza targets are a proper test of Obama and Abbas intentions - recall that Abbas broke of 2008 talks to show solidarity with Hamas rocket war on Israel, he has to make a choice, either he's with the terrorists or he's against them. Civilian casualties in gaza on the scale of those in Afgan (thousands) must be an acceptable price for defeating Hamas - Israel has this same right as Obama does to destroy Al Qaidah anbd the Taliban - or let him expose himself as a liar and bigot.

This conflict is artificially fed by settlers and their greed for stolen land. End the occupation and the illegal settlements and peace will become a reality. It will also help American and European Jews come closer to Israel, once they no longer have toi be ashamed of its colonization policy.

Fundamentally, the conflict at hand is one between the Muslim-Arab world, local and regional, and the nation-state of the Jewish people, Israel. Unless and until the Muslim-Arab world accepts Israel's right to be, to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people, little can be expected. Thus,

if the US president wishes to leave his mark on the process in a meaningful way he must first and foremost insist that the Muslim-Arab leadership accept Israel's legitimacy as the nation-state of the Jewish people. Once he does so, 97.2% of the conflict will be resolved. The rest will then be a piece of cake to handle. Yet, does Obama has the knowledge, understanding, experience and resolve to bring this about...??

The Arab countries and the Palestinian territories are nation states of Muslims, or their own people. No one objects to things such as roads in Saudi Arabia being labeled for Muslims only, and similar things. Why should the Palestinians negotiate to remove every last Jewish community from their areas, but Israel cannot be a homeland for the Jewish people? After all, there are about 22 Arab countries occupying huge amounts of territory, but you and the Arabas begrudge allow Jews to have their small little, tiny really, nation of Israel? By the way, Israel, unlike the Arab countries, allows women, gays, etc. to be treated equally, which is why so many escape to there. For that matter, many nations such as Japan, China, France, etc. are the homelands of their people. Why don't you spend some of your time objecting to real Apartheid nations, such as Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Egypt and leave the one democratic nation in the whole Middle East, Israel, to live in peace. Not allowing it to be the homeland of the Jewish people will eventually lead to it becoming the 23rd Arab state, because the real goal of all you bigots is to not allow Jews to have anything of their own at all.

Too bad Americans have NEVER lived in horror, otherwise you would realize the impact of Obama's so called call to good will. You think 9/11 was terror? No, the only people affected where those who lost their family, the remainder of the country, less the republicans, live in a world where bulldozers and construction workers solve their problems by moving the evidence of 9/11 to a landfill in Staten Island and return things as business as usual. Try living in a world where rockets land in your town on a DAILY basis for the last 8 years and constantly wonder which day will be your families home. America has become weak and now threatens all of Israel by it's foolish acts of giving in to TERRORISTS that most of the first world cannot not even fathom in their minds. Obama has opened the floodgates for an elimination of Israel and is a fool. The rest of you ... sheep to the wolf. George Bush kept Israel safe, now it's only up to god. Obama DOES NOT speak on behalf of Israel and has NO RIGHT TO DO SO.

There is NO just reason for Israel to appologise for leaving gaza and lebanon. The attack AGAINST Israel put them there in the first place. All the MILLIONS of dollars that the US has poured into Iraq has nothing to do with Israel either, Iraq and Iran have been slaughtering each other for years and AGAIN, it was IRAQ that attaacked Israel, which, might I remind you, Israel did nothing in the way of retaliation either. I would call Israel 'A VERY TOLLERANT AND JUST COUNTRY'. Israel strives only to attain peace for it's citizens, accept that it exists and perhaps then we can truely achieve peace.

I watched. One could say that it was three against one - Abbas, Mubarak, and King Abdullah - all Muslims against the one Jew. Abdullah's speech was perhaps the most reasonable and compelling. The translator had understandable problems with instant translation for both Mubarak and Abbas and a reference by Abbas to 1948 was garbled, so I am not sure whether it was troublesome. In general, Abbas set out a number of pre-conditions that may mess up the whole thing. I hope not. His speech was the most confrontational.

As direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority began this week in Washington, the PA gave an award to a woman for raising four sons who all murdered Israelis in terrorist attacks. PA Minister of Prisoners Affairs Issa Karake gave the “Shield of Resoluteness and Giving” to the mother of the Abu Hamid brothers, four of whom have been sentenced to life in prison for terrorism, in a ceremony reported by the PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and translated by Palestinian Media Watch. A fifth was killed fighting Israel in 1994. The woman was referred to by PA media only as Umm Yusef, “mother of Yusef,” and not by her given name. She was also referred to as “Khansa of Palestine,” a reference to the legend of a woman from the days of the beginning of Islam, who rejoiced when her four sons were all killed in battle. Umm Yusef Abu Hamid's sons all took part in terrorist attacks in which innocent Israeli civilians were murdered. Karake praised the Abu Hamid family as “a model of willpower and of the struggle for the independence of Palestine.” He was accompanied by other PA representatives and by representatives of PA "human rights" groups. Karake also visited the family of Ayyat Al-Akhras, a suicide bomber who murdered two Israelis in a Jerusalem supermarket in 2002. Al-Hayat Al-Jadida referred to Al-Akhras as having “died a Martyrs' death.”
