U.S. president tells Channel 2 Israel is unlikely to attack Iran without coordinating with the U.S.

In an interview aired Thursday evening, Obama was asked whether he was concerned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would try to attack Iran without clearing the move with the U.S., to which the president replied "I think the relationship between Israel and the U.S. is sufficiently strong that neither of us try to surprise each other, but we try to coordinate on issues of mutual concern."

Obama spoke to Channel 2's Yonit Levy one day after what he described as an "excellent" meeting with Netanyahu at the White House. The two leaders met alone for about 90 minutes Tuesday evening, during which time they discussed the peace process with the Palestinians, the contested Iranian nuclear program, and the strategic understandings between their two countries on Tehran's efforts to achieve nuclear capabilities.
Netanyahu promised Obama during their meeting that Israel would undertake confidence-building measures toward the Palestinian Authority in the coming days and weeks. These steps are likely to include the transfer of responsibility over more parts of the West Bank over to PA security forces.
During the interview Wednesday, when confronted with the anxiety that some Israelis feel toward him, Obama said that "some of it may just be the fact that my middle name is Hussein, and that creates suspicion."
"Ironically, I've got a Chief of Staff named Rahm Israel Emmanuel. My top political advisor is somebody who is a descendent of Holocaust survivors. My closeness to the Jewish American community was probably what propelled me to the U.S. Senate," Obama said.
"I think that sometimes, particularly in the Middle East, there's the feeling of the friend of my enemy must be my enemy, and the truth of the matter is that my outreach to the Muslim community is designed precisely to reduce the antagonism and the dangers posed by a hostile Muslim world to Israel and to the West," Obama went on to say.
Obama added that he believed a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians could be achieved within his current term. "I think [Netanyahu] understands we've got a fairly narrow window of opportunity… We probably won’t have a better opportunity than we have right now. And that has to be seized. It’s going to be difficult."
The American President entirely sidestepped the question of whether the U.S. would pressure Israel to extend a current 10-month moratorium on construction in West Bank settlements, failing to give a clear answer. The moratorium is set to expire in September, and Netanyahu has announced that he would not extend the timeframe. The U.S., however, views continued Israeli settlement construction as a serious obstacle to peace efforts.
When asked whether he thought Netanyahu was the right man to strike a peace deal with the Palestinians, the U.S. President said that "I think Prime Minister Netanyahu may be very well positioned to bring this about," adding that Israel will have to overcome many hurdles in order to affect the change required to "secure Israel for another 60 years"
In a separate interview with another Israeli media outlet, Obama proclaimed that he was not "blindly optimistic" regarding the chances of a Middle East peace agreement.
Israel is right to be skeptical about the peace process, he said in another yet-to-be-aired interview that was taped on Wednesday. He noted during the interview that many people thought the founding of Israel was impossible, so its very existence should be "a great source of hope."
Meanwhile on Wednesday, Netanyahu told U.S. Jewish leaders that direct Palestinian-Israeli talks would begin "very soon", but warned that they would be "very, very tough."
Netanyahu told his cabinet earlier this week before flying to Washington that the time had come for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to prepare to meet directly with the Israelis, as it was the only way to advance peace.
Israelis and Palestinians have been holding indirect talks mediated by Obama's special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell. Aides to Obama sounded a hopeful tone regarding the negotiations last week, telling reporters that the shuttle diplomacy between the two sides had paid off and the gaps have narrowed.
At a meeting with representatives of Jewish organizations at the Plaza Hotel late Wednesday, Netanyahu discussed the efforts to promote Middle East peace. "This is going to be a very, very tough negotiation," he said, adding "the sooner the better."
"Direct negotiations must begin right away, and we think that they will," he said.

I think there has been a change on the part of Obama. He has learned that Middle East affairs are much more complex than he at first thought. He has changed his hardline approach toward Israel and it leaders. He has learned that these tactics only increase the chance of conflict, and weaken moderate Arabs and Muslims in the region. Let's hope this on-the-job education of Obama continues in this direction. I think Obama may yet turn out to be a good friend of Israel ... only time will tell. For those of you who ridicule Mr. Obama for saying that Jews are wary because of his name, he is correct. The fact he is the child of a Muslim and his name rhymes with that of one of Israel's most radical enemies has been a cause for consternation and conjecture by many Jews. With the world insisting on "the peace process" it seems to me counterproductive to refuse to deal with Hamas. Why? If Isreal insists that Hamas be part of the peace negotiations the world will have to face the threat Hamas is to any meaningful peace in Gaza. Unlike in 1981 when Israel hit Saddam Hussains reactor and told nobody in advance today thats not possible because the US has an X Band radar station in the Negev and the minute Israeli jets left Israels airspace they would pick it up and be on the phone to the Pentagon who would inform Obama who would tell Bibi to get the planes to turn round and go home. This issue is particularly revealing of elements in netanyahu's personality. First, a basic principle. If you are discussing with another side sharing the land (or a pizza), it cannot be done while one party keeps devouring the land (or the pizza). So a freeze is obviously a necessary condition for peace talks. If Netanyahu did not think of this ahead of time, he could have gotten a clue from the fact that the Roadmap included a freeze in the FIRST phase. Also, the Palestinians insisted on it, and the US agreed. All this is basic. What decision did the Netanyahu government take? 1. The freeze applies to outside the current line of buildings, not to building WITHIN the currently built area. 2. The freeze will last for only 10 months. 3. The freeze will not be renewed. What do these elements indicate? The first element shows that Netanyahu has some reality, and understands that a territorial exchange is acceptable to the Palestinians, so he takes advantage of it. The two other points are clearly unreal. Was it conceivable that the talks will be concluded in only 10 months? Would the Palestinians and the US even conceive of talking peace with no freezing? I think Netanyahu has enough reality to realize that, but since he was dealing with his right wing partners Lieberman and most of Likud members, he decided to deceive them for now, present a nicer picture, and when the time comes he would try to wiggle out of it. All this shows Netanyahu as a creature of pressure; when pressured he acts, many times deceptively. Ultimately, he is not a courageous leader. He did not fight out the good fight then. Now he will pay some extra political cost for cheating.

The only people who want a one-state solution are Hamas, and out of touch leftists who live thousands of miles away. The "one-state solution" Hamas (and presumably the out of touch leftists) want actually means "killing all the Jews and establishing one Palestinian state." Most Palestinians don't want this either.
One state solution will look exactly as it looks today because Israel will never agree to a single bi-national state and there is no one that can enforce the alternative. Abbas and his cronies are too comfortable in their current position so why take a chance at peace that may result in their assassination ?

Do you know how many viable states exist which are smaller than what the Palestinians would have with 97% of the territories? You anti-Israelis are as dumb as a box of truck tires.
Two states is not over it was always a non started, there can never be a VIABLE palestinian state. Sure we can create the thing but that doesn't make it viable long term ( 22% of mandate Palestine 5800km), in 2 parts, lack of recources, growing population, an economy that would have to develop from scratch, no leader with the athority to speak for all. One state is the answer but that single state should be in Jordan it would b e viable, practical and it would be a win win solution for everybody. An international fund gives Jordan a huge pay off in return full citizenship is given to all palestinians, Israel officially annexes all of judea & `Samaria and the UN would recognize this as part of Israel, the palestinians living there would be given a permanent residency visa so they could live in Israeli territory as Jordanian citizens. If at any point they want to sell their homes then they have the option to sell private or if they prefer the Israeli government would be obligated to buy them out .. the government can laater sell on that land if it wants to finance the buy out program. If they want palestinians can move to Jordan where there is plenty of land & recources, a developed economy, a liberal stable leadership who has the authority to speak for everybody and will crack down on any potential terrorists. The capital of Jordan is Amman so Jerusalem isnt an issue Israel keeps it but allows the Waqf to still control Temple Mount providing they stop illegal construction. Result = Jordan gets money, Israel gets land, palestinians get Jordanian citizenship, settlers dont have to leave their homes, Palestinians can continue living in their homes, Israel stays a Jewish state. In realty just about everybody is a winner and no ordinary people have their lives affected for the worse the only losers are the palestinian politicians who don't want to give up power & terrorists. This whole thing would be aranged behind closed doors between national leaders & lawyers and the palestinian problem solved overnight without any ordinary people having to do a thing. It might not be the politically correct colution but its the one that works best for everybody.

Christianity has the highest following with about 50% of the world population identifying themselves a either Christian or Catholic or having a Christian heritage. The three billion a year as credit for Israel to buy US military goods is good for the US economy. This credit was a direct result of Israel making peace with Egypt and giving up the oil and the land captured in the Yom Kippor War. Let us not forget that in this deal Egypt gets 2.8 billion dollars a year on the same basis. So what does this have to do with Obama?
