When asked by Haaretz what would happen if the direct peace talks, officially launched in Washington on Sept. 2, were to break down at an early stage, Obama said that "we are going to keep on trying."
"Over the long term, it [peace] has the opportunity to change the strategic landscape in the Middle East in a way that would be very helpful. It would help us deal with an Iran that has not been willing to give up its nuclear program. It would help us deal with terrorist organizations in the region," Obama explained.
"[Palestinian President Mahmoud] Abbas and Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu were here last week, and they came with a sense of purpose and seriousness and cordiality that, frankly, exceeded a lot of people's expectations. What they said was that they were serious about negotiations. They affirmed the goal of creating two states living side by side in peace and security," the U.S. president said.
Obama said the United States will stay engaged in the negotiations, including a visit to the region by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton next week.
Referring to a temporary Israeli moratorium on construction in West Bank settlements, set to expire at the end of the month, Obama said that "I told Netanyahu – given that the talks are moving in a constructive way, it makes sense to extend the moratorium."
Abbas and other key Palestinian officials have declared that they would walk away from peace talks if the construction freeze is not extended beyond the September 26 deadline. Netanyahu has made no indication whether he intends to extend the freeze.
Obama went on to say that "I think the politics for Prime Minister Netanyahu is very difficult. I told Netanyahu that 'you've got to show president Abbas that you're serious.' One of the goals I set for myself and my team is that Netanyahu and Abbas have to think how they can make the other side succeed. The only way to succeed is to see the world through the other person's eyes, and that requires personal relations and trust."
The U.S.-backed talks have set a goal of establishing an independent Palestinian state within one year.

so early in this recent game... the USA is expected to give a decisive push in a constructive direction, not signs of capitulation...
Obama has made his position quite clear to everyone. His administration supports the illegal Israeli occupation and settlement enterprise, and there are no other options on the table that suit his AIPAC agenda.
Suddenly Obama is planning for failure. My message to Obama is, when making future peace efforts, do not pay Israel in advance. Better yet, don't even bother to make future peace efforts. Instead, be satisfied with the most badly planned peace effort ever. I doubt you can do better.
People of Israel be wary of the organizer in Washington who speaks with a forked tongue. He wants you to give up land but get nothing in return except more death from the sky from your enemies.
The 'Peace Talks' are like 3 men, an Israeli, an American and an Israeli, talking about how to divide up a pizza. The Israeli starts eating right away, tells the Palestinian he can not anything, and tells the American he must pay for the pizza. Israeli's killer bulldozers continue to roll, Palestine continues to dissappear, America pays for it all. The peace talks are a joke.
Now we will soon see if Bibi have any backbone behind its PR claim of seeking peace, or more certainly how he will surrender to the nauseous far-right and ultra-orthodox zealots.
The Palestinians have nothing to lose, they have already lost almost everything and too boot they are represented by a man who has no mandate to do anything, Israel gains more territory if the talks just keep talking, and Obama will gain support for the mid term elections either way. This is all a put up job for US public consumption
What? No imposition of peace by the Supreme World Potentate and Presidential Pretender non-citizen. Looks like Rev. Jones is not the only one to blink.
and i do expect obama to impose a peace or else and natanyahoo and abbas to gracefully say yes....as if their idea
Nah he's saving that one for the creation of a new Palestinian state.
obama certainly does not act or speak as the head of state and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of a superpower. the idea that the united states could be "put at risk" by a local war between two peoples about a land dispute thousands of kilometers from american shores is ridiculous. let obama admit that the cause of terror attacks against america and all western allies is jihad. the terrorists want to expell all american and allied westerners from muslim lands. israel is regarded in this respect as only an extention of the infidel occupation of muslim land. although peace between israel and the palestinians is highly desirable since peace is a good in itself, such a result has no bearing whatever on the issues of radical islamic terror, be it emanating from shia iran or from the sunnis. to say otherwise is to encourage and embolden the extremists.
C.J.K. isn't fit to touch the hem of Obama's Brooks Brothers suits.
Sorry to burst your bubble but according tot the 9-11 report on page 147, the reason they attacked us was our support of Israel and that countrys policy toward the Palestinians. Its common knowledge around the Middle East that America's support of Israel has garnered hate for my country for decades. My guess is that some in here are clueless on how the arab street thinks.
The military subsidies to Israel is not out of American altruism, regional instability in the ME certainly does have an affect on america. For the same reasons why america is looking to get off oil dependence...the region is still the largest provider of oil to the west...instability effects america in big ways. And none of it has anything to do with islamic jihad or crazy evangelical christians love of the holy land. It makes economic sense. When it stops making sense the US will stop giving subsidies or trying to negotiate an "enduring peace" between the moderate muslims and israel. Quite frankly my tax money will be happier for it.
only became more prevalent in the late 1980's and the conflict between Israel and the Arabs, especially the situation with the Palestinians, has contributed very negative sentiments towards Israel. If for example, a peaceful settlement was reached after the Six Days War in 1967 (which what U.N. S. C Resolutions 242 and 338 address), these radical groups wouldn't have gained as much support or recruitment. It will take some time for the radical groups to decrease in popularity, but the moderates of the region would support a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. The moderates accept the Jewish community and that Israel is a homeland for the Jewish people.
Are you Mr . President expecting the Americans to nominate you for the Presidency once again ?
If Islam is indeed a religion of peace let's hear from the leaders of the peaceful Islim. Let's hear them berating the actions of the Afghan's stoning men and women to death; let's hear them berating the actions of the human bombers; let's hear them berating al-Qaida for hiding among civilians; let's hear them praising our troops who place themselves in harms way. I.E. identify yourselves.
OK,Saudi Wahabis finance most of the mosques in the US,Saudi Wahabis taught Osama everything he knows about Islam,Wahabis think Osama is a great hero...American Islam equates to a fith column, because they are to a large part financed by Wahabis!! The Saudis are not our friends then!!!!!!~~
Dear Obama, If you are reading this, please be advised , if no peace comes out of this event, please put sanctions on the parties or party that refuses to cooperate .
we need to prove somebody is holding up the process and we need fingers on tape to say who f up and who refuses to make peace
The Middle East peace process was compromised today when Mr. Obama carelessly stoked the fires of religious intolerance by accidentally, I believe, suggesting Islam is a foreign religion to Americans. "The idea that we would burn the sacred text of someone else's religion is contrary to what this country stands for. It is contrary to what this nation was founded on," Obama said during the news conference. The words "somebody else's religion" is a very dangerous comment that anti-Muslim Americans will jump on as a green light to prevent the Islamic faith from expanding and building mosques because it is a foreign religion that is behind 9/11 and endorses terrorism.
No israel, No Palestine. One State Solution is the best for all. One Man, One Vote, Equality for all inhabitants. Equal Pay for Equal Work, Equal Water Rights. No Apartheid, No Segregation...A Very True Secular Democrac Let us call it: “State of Holy Land”.
Yes a One State solution is the best for all since Jordan hogged part of the PALESTINIAN REGION and the Hashemaite family that is related to the Saudis self proclaimed kings and queens.... remember self proclaimed.... the majority of the population in Jordan is made up of P A L E S T I N I A N S .... GET IT?? SO ITS EASY MOVE ALL OF THEM INCLUDING YOU TO JORDAN PALESTINIAN STATE ALREADY EXISTS END OF STORY BYE BYE TONY SILVER
And so wrong.
I think it's a brilliant and realistic idea to force two bitter enemies into a single state. It's not like there would be a civil war or anything like that, and if we try REALLY hard, it will work for sure! But why stop there? Let’s have all the states in the world merge together and form a single state. I mean after all, it’s very realistic. It’s not like different ethnic groups want self-determination or anything like that. As for the one-state Holy Land, I think the Jews would love living in an Arab majority state. After all, the Arab world has a proven track record of maintaining democratic ideals, this is especially true in the Palestinian territories, whose authorities would rule the one state. It’s not like Abbas’ presidential term expired back in 2009 or Gaza is run by an Islamic fundamentalist terrorist organization.
Yesterday it was a pastor of a small church who was going to put Americas security at risk for burning the qaron. Today it is Israels unwillingness putting Americas security at risk. President Obama and your white house list against those who want to practice free speech or in Israels case god forbid a right to be a free and independent nation it is your own extremisim with a muslim bias that is putting all free nations at risk. You will be one and done thru the ballot box. Another who came and went with anti semitsim in his heart.
U.S. President Barack Obama said Friday that he was encouraging peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians because the alternative is a status quo that puts both parties - and the United States - at risk.
It would help us deal with an Iran that has not been willing to give up its nuclear program.Just how would peace between Israel and the Palestinians help you Mr,Obama deal with a fanatical ,fundamendalist ,illegal regime called Iran , I am sick and tired of hearing Obama nonsense .
I THINK THE USA AND ALL OF THE FREE WORLD SHOULD IMPOSE A SOLUTION IN THE MIDDLE EAST-THATS THE ONLY WAY TO ACHEIVE PEACE IN THE REGION.
why is israel untouchable
God, who created the Universe with His Family is for Himself and for His Family only. God created Humanity to tell Humanity's stories for Eternity to God's Very Own Biological Children He is going to have. The Jews, Christians, and Muslims and all other religion's members are NOT God's Very Own Biological Children. I am not an atheist. God and His Family... They All are Just Awesome !
So Bibi should extend the so called freeze because the talks are moving in a constructive way. Mr. Obama, how about standing up for what is right and saying that the settlements are illegal, should stop , and make a mockery of the 2 state solution and peace. Obama and the US are not and have never been a fair broker in this conflict. Obama won't dare say anything to offend the pro Israel lobby because he knows the consequences. Obama's words do not represent democracy and justice but corrupt politicians, back door deals and dirty lobbyist.
They are just as legal for Israel or more so than for transJordan the so-called country that illegally occupied the area.
Just want to let U know, come the 11th hour, when all humanly possible options have failed, the boy with 5 loaves and 2 fish will be there. www.twitter.com/ShimonCleopas
No doubt all parties seek peace. However, the bad news, is that what is known as peace will not come that easily, not for many years.reasons are varied, both Israel and the PA are facing extremism. The extremism by the far right in Israel, cannot be addressed without painful political decisions. No government in Israel has been able to contain the far right, the government under the late PM Rabin failed. So what can PM Netanyahu hope to achieve. Its sad, yet its reality. The PA cannot proceed without Hamas, unless they plan a Palestinian State in the West Bank, which again is considered by Hamas as a breakaway entity somewhat akin to what China considers Taiwan. Then, we have Iran. The Regime will attempt whatever it takes to create havoc. So, what is the peace process hoping to achieve.? Well, its a beginning, a lengthily process, that may well show the world that the gracious president cares, it may, if well orchestrated, further the aims of Ms.Clinton. No doubt, nobody in Washington is that naive, for the true intentions are well hidden, even though suspicions do arise that it may well help the US in its current and disastrous campaign in Afghanistan and naturally the "boisterous" draw-down in Iraq. Maybe we all care for peace, but, I repeat,... but,.... November is close enough. A good evening to all.
the zio entity has always had war and expansion and US is footing the bill...sto and the zio entity sues for peace seriously
Their real homeland.
The REAL reason that Obama & Company are pushing for continuity is ONE THING alone--U.S. voters are set to deal him perhaps the worst defeat in recent history and he is DESPERATE for some kind of "perceived" success. He is grasping at straws. I, for one, HOPE these talks will fail miserably, simply because I view Obama as the BIGGEST danger in the long term to Western security--and Israel's very existence. Let them fail. Let him add yet another of the string of failed involvements he has demonstrated in his brief tenure.
obama is putting pressure on the wrong party. all i ever hear from him is him telling Israel they have to bend. he proved his supidity today when he stated that americas enemy was not islam but al-queda. al-queda is just a symptom of the evil that the world faces and that enemy is islam and as long as he continues frfusing to understand that and side with the enemy then he is the enemy also.
WRONG-THE PRESSURE WAS AND IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE ON PALESTINIANS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE WEAK PARTY. SO BE AT LEAST FAIR ED.
"obama is putting pressure on the wrong party" Since the POTUS is pressuring both Israel AND the PA in a likely unsuccesful attempt to end 62 years of warfare...the stupid decision would be to continue the killing. Remember, ME peace isn't Obama's responsibility...nor does that responsibility belong to the US, or EU, or NATO. The solution is simple enough...and rests squarely with Israel and the PA...fix your own problems instead of blaming everyone else!
and the window on that is likely to have already closed (Netanyahu would have to agree to right of return, 67 borders, resource share transfers, and development aid, and gets it through and implemented, and subsequent governments vigorously pursuing the economic growth of non-Jewish Israelis and Palestine before the world power structure changes enough that the ICC can pursue Israeli policies and politicians with vigor), and any talks that would be accorded any legitimacy outside of Israel and the US would have to be on hammering out a one-state constitution with right of return and economic policies to address the economic disparities as well as a mechanism of enforcing the constitution firmly embedded in it
and it's clear who will win. The one State Solution is the far-right's dream because they know it will lead to a civil war, which in turn will lead to a second "Nakbah" in the area consisting of mandatory Palestine.
because it will make a common cause for the Israeli and Palestinian mainstream to actively turn on the extremists of both sides in a unified way. Look at the South African example, although, given the closer nature of the population balance, there will be a greater temptation to try and use force to preserve priveledge, there will also be a greater awareness of the danger of that, and an easier alternative (a Jew moving away from the one-state will find a bit more open of borders than a White moving away from that one-state, at least for a fair while)
Status Quo risk to US, great stuff, now it puts Israels in position of spoiler should Bibi fail to comply. You just didn't hear things like than in the past, continuation of Israeli/Palestinian conflict now formally recognized as threat to US security... actually started with statements by Petraeus some time ago but with POTUS repeating on a near regular basis the writing is on the wall that the US is not just playing this time around.
I thought Obama might say "If these talks don't work, f it, i'm giving up on it."
continue with?
Yes, the first time a US official acknowledges the risk on sovereign USA for it support, blind support, to the Israel project. September 11 murders, Iranian ascent aided by stupid destruction of Iraq put Israel at greater risk. The involvement of the US in the middle east had one and one beneficiary , Israel. I am happy that it is sinking in our leaders heads, not the "for sale" US congress , having a gendarme in the middle east is a losing proposition. For Israel to survive , which I really doubt as such, it will have to become more Arab and not Long Island tainted.
than it was about protecting the Gulf states or Israel.
why is gas still so expensive here? You'd expect us all to be rolling in it if what you say is true....
bho is either one or the other.
In antiquity, the Israelites came and took over the Land of Canaan. Some of the local peoples (Canaanites, Philistines, etc.) were assimilated into Israel and some remained non-Israelites. During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, many more non-Jews settled on the Land. Due to oppression by the Roman government in particular, most of the Jews left the Land into exile. They were able to maintain their Jewish identity and culture through the ages. The peoples who remained on the land were Arabized during the Islamic conquest of the 7th century, most adopting Islam. These Arabs are today's Palestinians. In the Zionist era, the Jews returned to Palestine/Land of Israel, but refused to accept the local Palestinians as their relatives. Wars ensued, and finally settled by the division of the land into two countries, Israel and Palestine. And they lived happily ever after./// Such a narrative will not be problematic for either side. Jews might initially be a bit unhappy, because it seems that they were the ones who refused to recognize the Palestinians as a related people. However, this is exactly what the Jews did following the Return from Babylonian Exile. As described in the Book of Ezra, the Jews refused to let local people join them in building the Temple and worshiping the same God. (Apparently, the reference is to the Samaritans, a mixture of Israelites and foreign people brought into the Land.) Behaving in the same way again and again is a mark of authenticity, so will be acceptable to the Jews. End of conflict. Amen.
Israelis right and left have insisted on building on occupied land for four decades, and if forced to choose between their colonies and peace, they will keep their WB colonies.
Putting the United States at risk. No truer words were ever spoken and rest assured Obama will be taking care of some very important business.
The only reason Hillary was allowed involvement in the present peace process is that Obama believes it is better for him not to get too involved publicly for fear of failure, which is considerable because of Netanyahu's traditional hardline positions. Indeed, it looks strange to see the picture of Hillary between Abbas and Betanyahu in the Washington meeting; it is against protocol. The "summit" is between two heads of government, so President Obama was the expected host, not his Foreign Minister. Hillary herself has no experience in such peace negotiations, and no particular knowledge of the Middle East. I think she has gotten too excited about her new role as a cover, behind which the real work was done (by Obama and Mitchell) the day before. Her predictions of "last chance" etc carry no weight and no authority.
It is amazing how extremists on both sides take a stand of all or none. Jews and Arabs have to live in peace and work together to build a better Middle East. Old ideas die hard in the ME. I have many Jewish friends I would much rather have as neighbors than many Arabs. We all have to overcome suspicion and fear and build a better future based on equality and full guarantees of human rights. The amounts spent on munition and war can make the ME flourish and prosper for all peoples. Arabs will do good to work with Israelis to address the real needs for development and promoting better living standards for both..
many of us want peace.
we'll continue trying to defend our democracy, doesn't matter that a prophet told, G_d will collect his people to fight ancient Greece ( democracy). We will see, who got more helper, the democratic world or the Lord of hosts. I love King David, and i love his kingdom. It's the only way to redeem all jews worldwide !
