Number of ultra-Orthodox men exempted from IDF service reaches all-time high
IDF says it expects number of exemptions for ultra-Orthodox to continue rising, unless government decides to draft them; in 2011, a quarter of all draft-eligible Israeli males received exemptions from military service for various reasons.
The proportion of young ultra-Orthodox men who as full-time yeshiva students received exemptions from compulsory military service in 2012 has climbed to a record 13.8 percent of all Israeli males, who are otherwise subject to the draft. The figure represents a rise of 0.8 percent in three years.
