Furthermore, Netanyahu said that the Palestinians' refusal to enter negotiations harms Israel, the Palestinians, and peace efforts, stressing that that there are no short cuts.
Netanyahu made the remarks at a meeting with President Barack Obama, who reiterated the unwavering U.S. commitment to Israel and said efforts to impose peace on Israel and the Palestinians would not work.
Earlier Wednesday, Obama addressed the UN General Assembly and urged Israel and the Palestinians to renew negotiations, stressing that the Palestinians' cannot achieve statehood through UN resolutions.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman congratulated Obama's UN speech, and praised him for not stating that negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians should be based on 1967 borders.
“I congratulate President Obama, and I am ready to sign on this speech with both hands,” said Lieberman during a post-speech press conference.
Opposition leader Tzipi Livni (Kadima) also responded to Obama's speech, saying that Obama was right to demand a return to negotiations and emphasizing that UN speeches will not "change a thing."

Obama: I've given the speech, where's the money? Bibi: (whispering) Wait till we get outside away from all these cameras!
moral relativism in obama's speech is precisely why we are all in this mess... israel defends herself for 60 yrs after the UN approved israel's legitimacy, and the Palestinians use terror for 60 yrs to attack her...and obama says each side should try to step into the others shoes? that's totally repugnant and is in fact, moral relativism. Its why obama is a weak leader. He will sacrifice the truth in order to "seem" fair.
soon the WHOLE of Palestine will be free from the westbank to the sea, thanks lieberman and nettyahoo!
It worked for Korea so why not Palestine?
Israel has NEVER been serious about peace talks. the game plan is build more illegal settlements, steal more land, whine, and do more ethnic cleansing in the occupied territories. I am ashamed that the USA sends money to Israel. Israel lost any shred of morality after Cast Lead and the murders on the flotilla.
Bibi is right. He is the real boss. How else can one explain this submissive US attitude.
Bibi thanks Obama for toeing the line. I guess this time Bibi did not show disrespect to the US President. Bibi's policies really stink.
who does look like a "spoiled child" desperately begging for help from his father?
USA will be kicked out of the ME, when the rest of deceitful Arab dictators are gone.
The mess hasn't started YET!!! Before the dust settles on the sundown of Israeli existance. YOU poor smug arrogant people of Israel will be begging for the Palestinian people to have their state, And be willing to give up everything they need to to have one. If you were worried before: BE VERY WORRIED NOW!!!!!
Either the United States become a dictatorship, or they are out of the ME peace process..... As long as there are important elections held in the U.S. every 2 years, the U.S. will never be able to play the role of an honest broker in the ME, because its politicians (including the president) will have to make "nice nice" with the omnipotent Jewish right- wing pro-Israel lobby in Washington D.C., otherwise there will be no cash available for their campaigns. That's why the Europeans (and pretty much the rest of the world) want to see the U.S. kicked out of the leading role in the peace process as soon as possible....
won't negotiate in good faith, i.e continuing to build on what is not theirsm what's the point? I think what the Palestinians and most of the rest of the world want is justice, equality and freedom from the yolk of oppression. Surely, the Jewish people can understand that.
Nothing about this issue was mentioned among Netanyahu's "concessions" in the UN, so I assume he still refuses a freeze; he wants to eat as much of the pizza as possible while discussing how to divide it. In this case, the Palestinians better get the UN to declare statehood, then join the ICC, and have anybody approving settlemet construction indicted by the Court for a war crime. That Netanyahu refuses to freeze settlement construction makes sense, because otherwise he would look like an idiot to Israelis, for he refused a freeze for a miserable THREE months only and this despite a huge bribe Obama was willing to pay. If he now does it for nothing, how would he look? Of course, like the Yahoo that he is.
then all babbles lies conspiracies terror wars oil interest rates will be waste
Shame on you Obama -- You promised to Veto it and our Nethenyahu says their bid will not succeed - If not for USA - Palestinians would have a state by now. Nothing you Netenyahu did would have stopped this from happening.
Nice, when obama gets the support of Lieberman, we know that we are on the wrong track...
Bibi is right. He is the real boss.
israeli and palestinian leadership are both lying scum and Obama got caught in the middle. israeli settlements are terrible but so are palestinian promises that rockets wont fall and embassies wont get burned even if they get their state. Poor israeli and palestinian people with no real leadership. This conflict continues to be a lose-lose for the people on the ground suffering while all the leaders wives shop in paris
Netanyahu showed Obama who'se his daddy.
I guess Bibi now owes Obama big time!
I told y'all September will not change a th thing for the Palis, only difference is the temperature will be a little cooler.
His Slave listens.
The most powerful country in the world and the most powerful country in the region just cannot issue enough warnings and threats over an effort by a powerless and oppressed people to better their political situation. One must ask - what is going on behind the scenes to cause all the fuss? Zionists are feeling threatened at any loss of total control.
One year ago Obama said he wanted the UN to declare a Palestinian state, now he's changed his mind. Democracy is nothing but a distant memory in USA. How do we get US politicians to stop pandering to the Israel lobby? US constitution has been reduced to an artifact that people go to a museum to see what their nation once stood for. I thought Obama would be different. This is absolutely sick.
Lieberman applauds Obama's and in the next breath says Israel will continue to ignore International Law and not stop settlements for even one day. The facade has finally come down and no more pretending there is a peace process. The choice is clear for all those voting at the UN...stick with US and Israel or break out for justice.
Dear Mr. President: You and the PM can pat each other's back. I think both of you will live to regret it.
Obama's presentation to the U.N. was totally one-sided. He threw in all the red meat demanded of Jewish voters. He mentioned the holocaust, the past Arab-Israeli wars, the terror campaign and the "fact" that Israel is surrounded by countries who seek to destroy it. (Who, other than Iran is calling for Israel's elimination these days?) Not a word about the apartheid system in the West Bank that confines most of the population to 40% of their land, parceled out in non-contiguous cantons. Not a word about the barriers and Jew-only roads that are a source of daily humiliation to the Palestinians and hamper the building of a viable economy. Not a word a out the depredations of settlers against Palestinian property and the ongoing illegal colonization. Only the empty declaration that he favors a Palestinian state that he knows a hundred years of negotiation cannot deliver, because, deep-down,most Israelis are committed to continued Israeli control of the West Bank, with nothing more than a degree of local autonomy to be granetd to the Palestinians And in the American political debate Obama is the modrerate, with Rick Perry and Michele Bachman calling for the annexation of the West Bank and denying any legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people. It is clear to me that the Palestinians are correct in seeking recognition by the U.N. and upgrading their status in the General Assembley. With their new status they will have more standing to seek justice in the International Court and seek financial and other sanctions from the U.N. and indiovidual countries that don't have an Israeli lobby which works against measures that are in their own country's best interest (Tom Friedman, in his column in Sunday's Times, accused the Israeli lobby of taking positions that they know are against the best interests of both the U.S. and Israel.) .
Israeli ownership of American foreign policy, as was on display at the UN today, should be totally unacceptable to all Americans.
This article shows that Netanyahu has limited intellect indeEd. On the one hand everyone knew that the bid wouldn't go through at the UNSC as Obama needs the jewish vote for the reelection in 2012. So, one does not understand why Netanyahu is announcing that he has "discovered" the dinamite. On the other hand the Israeli PM is thanking to Obama for endorsing negotiations: " Faced with this stalemate, I put forward a new basis for negotiations in May". LAST MAY The American PR has endorsed negotiations indeed, but in a very SPECIFIC framework: 1967 borders !!! Therefore why is Bibi thanking Obama if Obama endorses negotiations under a formula that Bibi does not want ??? It does not add up or Bibi doesn't know what he's thanking Obama for. LOL
And listen to his bold-faced bullcrap and deceitful hasbara?
"I think we should go there (UN) and present our truth" - Netanyhau/ What do you do when you can't handle the truth? You tell half the truth or perhaps a truth that was valid once upon a time but no longer holds. A couple of examples: 1. "Netanyahu said he has turned to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas several times, and offered him to meet, but Abbas declined." The other half of the truth is that Abbas was actually interested in meeting, but insisted that Israel freeze settlements construction so she wouldn't finish eating the pizza while the two sides discuss how to share it. 2. "[We will] present our truth… of a people attacked over and over by those opposed to their very existence." Sounds true, but the PLO recognized Israel's right to exist in 1988, 23 years ago. Since then Israel under Likud was opposed to a Palestinian state's existence, not the other way around.
Based on 1967 borders with agreed upon land swaps. Also the status of Jerusalem and the right of return must be negotiated. Finally there was no mention of the need to recognize Israel as a Jewish state or that "terrorist"entity called Hamas. Very significant omissions by Obama and a poke in the eye for Netanyahu. The saga continues with none knowing the ending.
No, you got it wrong. Obama is saying as he has before that the Palestinians have a right to have their country and the starting point is the 1967 borders with land swaps. He is not dictating any terms. They are to be negotiated. Israel can make its own deal. He knows as does Netanyahu that there will be no closure because there won't be recongnition and a peace agreement will be very hard. Obama believes that but he won't say anything but Peace is hard. However, both he and Netanyahu know that his warm embrace of Israel and his non embrace of the Palestinians and the UN gets him off the hook with American Jews and evangelicals; and he has an election to worry about.
Bibi wants war as only way to get more land
and Obama declared America in league with that injustice.
Talk about injustice! Where is the justice for Israel? The Jews have been treated unjustly for centuries. The Palestinians are new on the landscape and they should be in Jordan, which got most of the mandate land.
World opinion is driving this and world opinion will bring freedom to the indigenous Palestinians as it did for the blacks in South Africa.
Right now, a series of blunders, followed by cowardly cop outs is all that his "legacy" contains.
That's why USA is USA, and God is with them, they always backup God's land. God bless america......
So by your logic, I guess Buddha and Krishna are really the way of the future?
You aren't doing us any favors and we sure as HELL don't need your arrogant cowardly warmungering idiot government.
Palestinians are also willing to engage in direct negotiations, they only ask from Israel to freeze settlement building, which by the way, is breaching international law to which Israel has subscribed. How can Israel even argue that Settlements don't harm peace. Cynicism!
I don't think there have been any new settlements in years. settlement building consists of building in enclosed areas that under all agreements from Barak to Olmerts were going to be offset by other land. There may be a couple of towns in dispute but the truth is that the whole settlement freeze topic is a rediculous red herring. And that is the fact.
There was a time that I said that anyone would make a better president that Obama with the exception of Palin. Now Obama has changed my mind. Anybody would be a better president. At least Palin would bring comedy to the role. Obama just gives us continual dreary chronic weakness and hypocricy. A steady dies of that wears thin fast.
Peace and love.
because I do not believe he is doing this to support Palestinians
“I congratulate President Obama, and I am ready to sign on this speech with both hands,” said Lieberman during a post-speech press conference.
Obama gave the Palestinians the back of his hand but strongly embraced Israel. His comments concerning the Palestinians were non committal; affirming only their right to be independent but insisting that only direct negotiations would work since achieveing peace is hard; there are no shortcuts. He could have pointed out that the Palestinians blew earlier opportunities for peace and are clearly not interested in negotiating terms but rather hope the UN will hand them the deal of their lives; no settlers, E. Jerusalem, right of return money, etc. If so they are having wet dreams. Obama cemented his relationship not only with Israel but with US Jews who play a huge role in his reelection. The Palestinains can give him nothing but heartburn.
You have simply stated the obvious. Obama has sold his soul to Israel for dollars and votes.
I'm a pure american and I believe I know more about Palestine's history then the Palestinian him self. Why negotiate if it was their country in the start? you got to admit, Israel doesn't want peace, it has been stalling for 20 years of negotiation, you see any changes? You are probably one of those ignorant people that is brain washed by the media, you honestly don't know what goes on there do you? they have the right to all the land, but they are only asking for so little. do me a favor, get a gun and shoot your self in the head, you are giving everyone that is reading this post heartburn....
If Palestinian bid is not going to change anything on the ground, why is US and mostly Israel so pressed in killing the bid ?
Why mighty Israel is so afraid of a poor Palestinian state? Does Israel think that her legitimacy will be questioned after recognition of the state of Palestine?
Israel's GDP is around $250 billion per year. American military support is around 1% of that, The combined GDP of the West Bank and Gaza together is around $4 billion per year American humanitarian support is around 25% of that figure ($1 billion) Does Abbas REALLY want to piss off America? Does Arab pride spread THAT far? I assume that, at some point, sanity and pragmatism will prevail. But - you know, the "never missing an opportunity.....etc." is so ingrained in the Palestinian psyche - who knows???
Me doubt it.
Reality escapes you...
And tomorrow, will there be an Obama's joint news conference with Abu Mazen? Will we hear about unwavering US support for Palestine? Will we hear that organizers of illegal settlements on the occupied land must stand in front of the court? If not, we can call Obama puppet president...
Abbas has zero acomplishments over the past years in power. Abbas is getting old he now desperatley needs some form of recognition before he steps down . Statehood with make beleive borders . Arafat achieved nothing so will he .
un general assembly resolution181? read up on that. will help understand :-)
I had no idea who meek Obama is to the AIPAC
This act by the PLO is an attempt to avoid negotiations and to grab land. What the PLO failed to do with terror they now attempt with lawfare. These acts nullify past agreements and give Israel moral and legal right to annex disputed lands.
When the Palestinians submitted a set of written proposals last January, the Israeli government official to whom they were presented , refused to even take them. Netanyahu has come up with preconditions to negotiations such as the demand that the Palestinians acknowledge Israel as the state of the Jews, that he knows cannot be accepted a priori He insists on continuing settlement building in East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank that are illegal and which have been condemned by the whole world, even by the U.S. So who is it that is refusing to negotiate?
I hope they're proud of each other...
Exactly the same way that King George III gave the United States permission to exist. Israel, after all, did not require Palestine's permission to create their nation. Why should Palestine need Israel's?
That's the question Israelis ask themselves everyday, if East Jerusalem is gone, if the wall is dismantled, if millions of Palestinians return to Israel and if the Settlements are dismantled, will they wake up tomorrow or will they die as they sleep?. It's all about trust, so how could Israel trust a country that just a few days ago announced that Israelis would not be permitted in Palestine. Now that's what I call real Apartheid. what would you call it?
Israel and America look really bad in front of the world audience. This episode shows their true faces and they are not faces that want either peace or a Palestinian state.
Acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state and you will see the emergence of Palestine within a year. I truly believe that the Policy of expansion will be stopped in its tracks, and if not, well I'll support your side as will millions of Jews and the current policy will no longer be sustainable when America declares that Israel is on its own.
very cheap it will not change any facts on the ground. Palis must stop their crazy demands and Israel must also soften up a little then we will have lasting peace.
