Netanyahu: Iran sanctions won't necessarily halt its nuclear program
PM urges international community to continue imposing sanctions on Tehran, but says he is unsure whether the move will foil Iran's attempts to develop its nuclear program.
By Jonathan Lis Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Iran nuclear Iran sanctionsPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel is working to increase international pressure on Iran, but said that thus far, sanctions were unsuccessful in halting Tehran's nuclear program.
"We are working to increase the international pressure on Iran," Netanyahu said while speaking before the Knesset. "Even though Iran has not halted its nuclear program, and we do not know whether the sanctions will be effective, this is definitely the right step."

Netanyahu said that he has spoken to French President Nicolas Sarkozy after the European Union decided to impose a wide-reaching oil embargo on Iran, and praised him for his leadership on the difficult decision. He said he also spoke to British Prime Minister David Cameron and thanked him for his part as well.
"I thank them for undertaking this international effort," he said.
"I praised China for decreasing its oil imports from Iran," he said. "I also spoke to the Indian Foreign Minister on the same issue. I hope other countries such as South Korea and Japan will follow this lead."
Netanyahu said that he does not know whether sanctions can determine the fate of Iran's nuclear program, but said they can definitely make a difference.
On Tuesday, U.S. President Barack Obama said in his State of the Union address that the U.S. is determined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will take no options off the table to achieve that goal.
Iran, responding to the recent oil embargo imposed on it by the EU, warned it would have 'serious consequences.'
"Iran condemns this EU move as illogical and unjustifiable and believes it will have serious consequences for Europeans," the Foreign Ministry said in its first official statement after Monday's sanctions. It did not clarify what the consequences would be.

Eventually many Nations and their people have refused to be blindfolded and thrusts yet into another war. No war for Israel. Disarm Israel first of its more than nuclear weapons. Israel has become the most dangerous country on planet earth.
Sanctions won't stop the Iranian development of their A-Bomb. However, three dozen well placed bunker busters will stop it.
although coercive, sanctions are a diplomatic tool. iran is not interested in diplomacy. iran is not willing to give up its nuclear weapons program even if placed under sanctions. sanctions cannot work against a totalitarian dictatorship which does not care about the well being of the people and which does not answer to them. sanctions will fail, as they failed in saddam's iraq and in north korea.
Show everybody that Israel have BALLS. Or do you want the US to do your fighting?
What worries Netanyahu? That Iran might negotiate a compromise under which they are able to fully develop nuclear technology in Iran under close inspection without building a bomb. This would put them in compliance with the non-proliferation treaty but still be totally unacceptable to Bibi. Notice how he conflates "program" with "weapon?" There is a reason for that.
Anything Bibi says
Bibi will wait for the Republicans to nominate a candidate. If B ibi likes the cut of his Jib, he will force a war upon Obama before the election. This will send Obama packing and will give the new Republican president even more cause to love Israel. The new president will pursue the war with Iran and never make a peep about settlements or peace. Bibil takes for granted that the stupid and self absorbed American public will remain disinterested in international affairs. This is a safe bet.
The IMF warned of increase oil price volatility and the lack of excess production capacity in the rest of the world. The World Bank's economic projects for Iran were better than the US and EU even taking into account sanctions. But who are they to introduce logic into the situation.
at our cost in lives and MONEY....
Bibi - just kills us all, bomb us with your nukes, as in your twisted mind, thats probably the only thing which will stop our nuclear program. We all know thats what your wishing for.
Today Pakistan have nukes. The army of Pakistan is better and more powerful than any other muslim country. Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey are the most powerful countries of muslim countries. iran won against iraq in the war that was between them. The iranian army is not so powerful they don't have a good airforce. That is why they start with being aggresive in politics. They have lost there way. They want to develop their airforce system. But they can't because they are isolated. That is why they are pissed and is trying to develop nukes. Sanctions and isolation is not helpful. They can still develop the nuclear weapon. Negotiations and diplomacy is not either helpful. War and invasion is not either the answer.
I agree with PM Natanyahu...Neither sanction, nor military intervention will prevent Iran from joining the Nuclear Club!
Last week Bibi said sanctions against Iran are working and hurting Iranians..Today he's they're not enough??? WTF??? Funny how Israel is able to order Europeans to commit economic suicide while Israel itself will never put any meaningful sanctions on Iran...Pathetic!!!
Every effort must be made to prevent the state of Iran from ever achieving the nuclear weapon.sanctions against its oil is a positive step whose effect will be biting in the very near future.the currency of Iran will depreciate and it will hurt the economy .If the state of Iran continues its effort to achieve the nuclear weapon, then plan B of military option must be used.Iran though it is militarily strong ,it cannot stand the western militarily power.I congratulate all the countries in the world who have made the sanctions possible.
It would be nice if Israel were able to keep it's regional monopoly on nuclear weapons, but I really don't believe that all the nations in the world think this to be a healthy situation. Every other nuclear armed nation on earth has a nuclear armed opponent. Only Israel does not. Only Israel is building communities outside their national borders. Can there be a relationship between these two facts? Israel is not a well loved nation. This is also true of Iran. My point is that there is no "good guy" here. Israel's attempts to play the good guy are simply annoying and do not fool anybody.
Barring the purchase of Iranian oil will decrease oil availability and thus increase oil prices. Instead, the West should have imposed a special tax on Iranian oil, say 5-10 dollars per barrel, to be paid on oil imported to the EU and US governments, and every other government willing to join the scheme. The Iranians will be forced to discount their oil (absorb the tax) to make it sellable, so in effect the tax will be paid by Iranian treasury. Overall, the West will get extra income and Iran less. Iran will be forced to produce and sell even more oil. This will also lower world prices.
