Netanyahu, in damage control mode, enlists JFK and American football in calling for 'red lines' on Iran

The Soviets had no intention of putting ICBM's in Cuba. Castro was furious at Krushchev because of this, realizing that the Soviets only wanted to leverage the removal of US nuclear weapons from Turkey and Italy. The idea that JFK drew some imaginary red line in the sand is truly imaginary. The only thing the Americans managed was some superficial PR.

Israelis and Americans historically have wanted to avoid wars and it seems that the utmost must be done diplomatically to bring this crisis to an end. As I've suggested elsewhere here on Haaretz, it's wise to begin reconciliation with the Muslim world with the Arab Spring especially in drawing commonalities between both of our cultures - like a venn diagram! This would be a start for peace.

I never thought Netanyahu would do it, but he has, and seemingly gotten by with it. Because of Netanyahu, Romney will win the Presidency, but it remains to be seen if Romney wants to commit our country to a war to sustain Israelii hegemony in the ME and a non-settlement with the Palestinians.

I only want to make an observation. In the Cuban missile crisis, Kennedy did not ACT until launch pads were built and missiles were on the way to Cuba. That would be when the ball is on the goal line, but not across it. As all to many American football teams know the hardest ground to gain is in the RED ZONE. Most attempts at touchdowns fail. I do agree that EXTREME diligence is called for while in the RED ZONE. By giving RED LINES you actually enhance Iran's ability to reach their goal. The more an adversary knows about your plans the better prepared they can become. If they know where your looking the sleight of hand becomes easier. Even football teams know this.

We won't easily forget the Israeli PM's blatant attempt to influence our presidential election. Netanyahu had better succeed in throwing the election to his Bain buddy Romney, because if Obama manages to hold on without the American Jewish vote, the ramifications for the state of Israel in having to face a belligerent middle east alone are simply too terrible to contemplate.

JFK almost started WWIII during the Cuban missile crisis. He also had to withdraw our missiles from Turkey in exchange for getting the Soviet missiles out of Cuba, although that was kept secret at the time. The equivalent in this case would be for Iran to give up it's nukes in exchange for Israel giving up theirs. I don't think Netanyahu will agree to that. He wants everything his own way and he isn't going to get it at the expense of my children's lives!

If we wish to avert a war with Iran I can think of no better way than to STOP GIVING ISRAEL everything it wants. The whole idea that Israel should get, whatever Israel wants is a foolish, failed policy that leads to only one outcome, Israel demanding mroe and more.

Please make peace with Iran. Find a politcal solution. War can not lead to a lasting peace-Only Peace can.

Bibi should know by now that Americans, liberal, moderate or conservative, do not want the foreign policy of the United States dictated by foreigners.
