Netanyahu: Group who attacked IDF troops boarded ship separately
Welfare Minister Isaac Herzog tells cabinet meeting: It is time to lift the siege on Gaza, find worthy security alternative.
By Barak RavidThe Turkish activists who attacked Israel Defense Force soldiers aboard the Mavi Marmara last week boarded the ship separately, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday at the beginning of a cabinet meeting.
"They organized and equipped themselves separately [from other peace activists aboard the flotilla] and boarded the ship in a way that allowed them to avoid a security check," Netanyahu said, speaking one week after Israeli navy commandos boarded the Gaza-bound aid ship Mavi Marmara and were beaten by the passengers on board. In the resulting melee, nine activists were killed and dozens, including Israeli soldiers, were hurt.
"Their clear intention was to initiate a violent confrontation with IDF soldiers," Netanyahu said. "The world is beginning to become aware of this information."
Netanyahu did not speak about the possibility of investigating the incident, although a meeting between him and a forum of seven ministers is planned for Sunday night in order to discuss the different proposals for an investigation.
At the start of the cabinet meeting, Welfare Minister Isaac Herzog said that there was "a need to examine ways to increase aid to Gaza."
"The time has come to lift the siege and find a worthy alternative to ensure Israel's security. Now that the dust is beginning to settle after what we've been through, we can now begin a dialogue with sister nations," he added.
Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz responded to Herzog's remarks by saying that the siege on Gaza was necessary and that "lifting the blockade will bring more missiles with longer range flying toward Israeli towns."
Since the incident, both the United Nations and the U.S. have conveyed to Netanyahu different proposals for investigating the clashes, but the prime minister has yet to comment on any type of investigation.

Originally, the "siege" policy was motivated as the means to make the Gaza population unhappy with Hamas rule and help them overthrow it. It didn't work, and actually should not have been expected to work because historically, Arab masses do not overthrow rulers, Arab militaries do that, but in Gaza Hamas IS the military. The policy failed to achieve its goal, but was continued nevertheless under changing explanations (today it is the Shalit excuse). How much damage can a pointless, visibly failed policy cause? 1. For the present "flotilla" incident, read the various articles, and consider in addition that the UN may become more inclined to send the Goldstone Report to the Hague. Also, the governing Islamic party in Turkey might have found the excuse to break relations with Israel, which it avoided doing for fear of the Turkish military. The Turkish military might now be convinced that this has to be done. 2. Operation Cast Lead (late 2008) was caused by the pointless "siege" policy. Hamas offered to continue the then prevailing cease fire provided that Israel lifts the siege. Israel refused. Result: Abbas had to stop peace negotiations with Israel. Olmert said he was very close to a deal with the PA, but then Cast Lead "happened". No, idiot, it didn't just happen, Olmert preferred the "siege" over a peace deal. Such an incredible choice should go into the history books!
The blockade should be modified to allow cement and building materials through. However, to avoid it being a Hamas victory, Abbas should announce it as a result of the indirect negotiations which are taking place. This would make him a hero in Gaza, and Israel should insist that he reciprocated by agreeing to direct talks, in the near future.
Yes it is time for Israel to seek counselling. From a type of Alchoholics Anonymous organization for those with suicidal tendencies towards international relations. The first hurdle is to admit that you are addicted to thinking you know everything about everything and there can be no doubt you are right about everything and can do no wrong. A common disorder for the addicted. Enrol now also for anger management courses.
"A member of the Free Gaza movement, which organized the flotilla, obtained from a source in the IDF the detailed plan of how the Navy commandoes were to take over the vessel." Israel should watch it. There are so many enemy within it's rank and file.
Should have acted on it before hand, and lifting the siege does not have to affect Israel's security, ships and trucks can be checked just like any other country, the difference is other countries are allowed plastic toys, herbs and spices, clothes and shoes, books, musical instruments, cars, etc.etc.etc.
I don't think Minister Isaac Herzog knows the reality that will follow if the seige is just lifted without first seeking a better security alternative.
If we look at several facts, the picture of what actually happenned on the boat may not be so clear after all. The activists on the boat included many known terrorists and those with terrorist ties. There is a video showing people on the boat talking about being martyrs . The main goal of the activists was to break the blockade, or make Israel look bad in the world media. The reports show there was gunfire reported from shotguns and other weapons which the Israeli soldiers did not have. So it is quite possible that the plan of the activists was to shoot some of their own who were willing to commit suicide for the cause(like suicide bombers), and then blame Israel for it. They could easily toss overboard their own weapons afterward, and better yet, use the Israeli soldiers ' weapons which they took, to shoot their own. Has anyone accounted for the bullets, or figured out how so many were shot at close range in the head?
Binyamin Netanyahu is either lied to and conveying a made up story, or is a liar himself. Such a shame to have a lyeing PM...
Why everyone call them "activists" - this implies "peace activists" - this is clearly the wrong term to use here.
Give me a break, how desperate can you get? If these were people trying to get into a violent confrontation and "avoided security checks" - dont you think they would have had real weapons to face heavily armed soldiers, instead of relying on kitchen knives and sawing off railings??
You must think these guys are dim. How do you think they've caused this major distortion,it's by the very fact that they didn't bring weapons on board. The bigger picture has been achieved, World attention on Gaza...
I think their ship broke down, and they had to transfer to the main ship. If he is referring to this group, I think he is grasping at straws.
Proof?
Just more distortions coming from the man who already has close to no credibility in the rest of the world. I just wonder why so many Israelis take this at face value. Where are the calls for a new government?
This is merely an extension of the same Policy.
The entire ship should have been destroyed. Netanyahu is too good to our enemies.
