Netanyahu: EU sanctions step in the right direction
PM's comments come in wake of EU agreement to impose oil embargo against Iran as part of sanctions over its nuclear program.

According to Netanyahu, who spoke at an afternoon Likud faction meeting, it is still too early to predict the outcome of the sanctions, but emphasized the importance of continual pressure on Iran in light of "its continual, uninterrupted development of nuclear weapons."

Defense Minister Ehud Barak also commented on the sanctions, saying EU's decision is "especially important."
"We believe these sanctions will be imposed quickly in order to put the Iranian leadership to the test," Barak said.
After months of threats and pleas, the European Union finally adopted an oil embargo against Iran Monday, voting unanimously to up the ante by adopting the most sweeping sanctions yet against the Islamic Republic.
The new measures include a freeze of the assets of the country's central bank, a prohibition on trade in gold, diamonds and precious medals with the bank and Iranian public bodies, and most significantly, an immediate embargo on new contracts for crude oil and petroleum products.
The EU imported some 600,000 barrels of Iranian oil per day last year, according to the International Energy Agency, making it a key market for Iran, alongside China.
Bowing to pressure from Greece, and several other countries heavily dependent on low-priced Iranian oil, the 27 foreign ministers conceded that existing oil contracts would be allowed to run until July.
Diplomats in Brussels said that EU foreign ministers would officially adopt the measures, hashed out by member countries' 27 ambassadors, later on Monday. The measures include an immediate embargo on new contracts with Tehran for crude oil and petroleum products, while existing ones must be brought to an end by July 1.
The EU also approved fresh travel bans and asset freezes over the Syrian regime's
opposition crackdown. The foreign ministers are expected to approve sanctions against the central bank of Iran, although they may provide a list of specific exemptions to the restrictions.
EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton said she hoped financial sanctions would persuade Tehran to return to negotiations with Western powers, which she represents in talks with Iran.
"I want the pressure of these sanctions to result in negotiations," she told reporters before the ministers' meeting. "I want to see Iran come back to the table and either pick up all the ideas that we left on the table last year, or to come forward with its own ideas," she said.
Ali Fallahian, a senior Iranian politician said in response on Monday that Iran should halt all oil sales to the European Union immediately to disrupt plans for the embargo.
Tehran denies its nuclear program is aimed at developing weapons, saying it is for peaceful purposes, but the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency said last year it had evidence that suggested Iran had worked on designing a nuclear weapon.
EU sanctions follow fresh financial measures signed into law by U.S. President Barack Obama on New Year's Eve and mainly targeting the oil sector, which accounts for some 90 percent of Iranian exports to the EU. The European Union is Iran's second-largest oil customer, after China.
Diplomats said EU governments plan to return to the issue of oil sanctions in May to review the impact of the ban and its economic impact on their economies.
A U.S. aircraft carrier sailed through the Strait of Hormuz and into the Gulf without incident on Sunday, a day after Iran backed away from an earlier threat to take action if an American carrier returned to the strategic waterway.
The carrier USS Abraham Lincoln completed a "regular and routine" passage through the strait, a critical gateway for the region's oil exports, "as previously scheduled and without incident," said Lieutenant Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Fifth Fleet.

The games US and EU is playing is pathetic !, first of these sanctions take effect only in July and next month IAEA meets in Tehran. US and other governments want higher prices of oil as they tax the price, the higher the price they more money they pull in. Now they bring up these tactics so that oil remains high . I think Tehran s red lines have been crossed over so many times .

Lets hurt the Iranian people in order to hurt the Iranian regieme. I, as a proud Iranian, cannot wait for this illegal and terrorist government to leave Iran and that we have a democratic government in place. But when that day come, I also will fully support no relationship with Israel in retaliation for the harsh punishment and treatment they are enforncing on my people. dont get me wrong, I do not wish to "destroy" or "wipe Israel off the map", but I want absolutely NOTHING to do with Israel, and I think I speak on behalf of the normal and general Iranian people.
I am Iranian too and I support Reza's message 100% You have gone way too far and won't stop going further.
imposters....
I woinder what Netanyahu would say if the EU imposed sanctions on Israel because of Israel's human rights violations and illegal actions in the est Bank and Gaza.
History will remember this man as the symbol of hate, but is revenge for the holocaust, the real force behind draconian disregard or the economic failures. I hope he isn't digging himself deeper in this sss!
So the EU implements sanctions that Netanyahu wants and all the rhetoric about the EU's criticism of expanding settlements in Palestine being 'irrelevant' is forgotten or ignored? Having his cake and eating it isn't he? All these sanctions without any actual proof of 'weaponised' uranium, or evidence of attempts to manufacture a nuclear weapon, from countries with nuclear capabilities themselves no less. The whole thing stinks of hypocricy and corruption, from all sides.
But there was a time when Israel was respected. How about this? Israelis vote to democratically recall their current status quo via a no confidence vote? The net effect of a REAL step in the right direction? +Israel regains some semblance of shame and dignity in the world and prepares to become friends with all +Peace that will make it safer to be in Israel and in a country around Israel
Now Iran's economy will be in shambles. No money to develop or put a finishing touch to its nuclear ambition. Does Netanyahoo sees it as an oppurtunity to further weaken Iran by launching surprise attack on Iran's nuclear installation ?
Iran + China + Russia + India + Japan + Korea = more power than EU and US combined
If Israel launches attack on iran, the only winner will be Palestinians. Israel will fetch an unpredictable enemy, who will engage in war for decades to come. Israel would not be able to afford its loss of human lives or the enormous cost of war. Palestinians will gain their independance.
world would have been bombed, so why is it ok to wage war against certain states bibi?
what arrogance coming from a State that's occupying a people's land. You're the one who should be sanctionned a million times Bibi. Thanks to your 'friends' you got away with it. Justice will prevail, your time will come. Don't worry.
In hitting the central bank and Iran’s oil exportation the EU is taking part in the collective punishment of the Iranian people. Not only that, with several EU economies teetering on the brink of collapse any sudden hike in the price of crude could spell disaster. All in all this is an ill conceived plan that is unlikely to change Iran's stance, in fact quite the opposite, it will probably serve to stiffen their resolve.
They only have to watch that the embargo is not inderminded by Russia, who may buy iranian oil and resale it in the spot market. Russia is able to do everything to be a big player in world's politics
iranian regime must be erased from the pages of time
The EU and the US should revoke all student visa's for those studying "nuclear engineering" They should promptly deport them as well. Further I'd prohibit anyone of the muslim faith from being enrolled in a nuclear related curriculum regardless of nationality.
Seriously, does he think his endorsing of the European sanction - his particularly, or the Israeli governments, help in securing the sanctions - or hurt. Israeli pols should stay silent on this one...they are just marginally less unpopular than the Iranians in Europe - with good reason
and what sanctions will you have Mr.Netanyahoo for having hundreds of nukes? Are jewish nukes kosher?
because they are dangerous for paranoiacs only.
