Mubarak slammed U.S. in phone call with Israeli MK before resignation
Radical Islam will be result of U.S. push for democracy, Mubarak told Israel's Ben-Eliezer during a phone call on Thursday.
By ReutersHosni Mubarak had harsh words for the United States and what he described as its misguided quest for democracy in the Middle East in a telephone call with an Israeli lawmaker a day before he quit as Egypt's president.
The legislator, former cabinet minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, said on TV Friday that he came away from the 20-minute conversation on Thursday with the feeling the 82-year-old leader realized "it was the end of the Mubarak era".
"He had very tough things to say about the United States," said Ben-Eliezer, a member of the Labor Party who has held talks with Mubarak on numerous occasions while serving in various Israeli coalition governments.
"He gave me a lesson in democracy and said: 'We see the democracy the United States spearheaded in Iran and with Hamas, in Gaza, and that's the fate of the Middle East,'" Ben-Eliezer said.
"'They may be talking about democracy but they don't know what they're talking about and the result will be extremism and radical Islam,'" he quoted Mubarak as saying.
U.S. support for pro-democracy elements in Iran has not led to regime change in the Islamic Republic, and Hamas, a group Washington considers to be a terrorist organization, won a 2006 Palestinian election promoted by the United States.
Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 after a coalition government it formed with Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas collapsed in a power struggle.
Ben-Eliezer said Mubarak expanded in the telephone call on "what he expects will happen in the Middle East after his fall".
"He contended the snowball (of civil unrest) won't stop in Egypt and it wouldn't skip any Arab country in the Middle East and in the Gulf.
"He said 'I won't be surprised if in the future you see more extremism and radical Islam and more disturbances -- dramatic changes and upheavals," Ben-Eliezer added.
Egypt in 1979 became the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel and has backed U.S.-led efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of an Iran-style Islamist revolution in Egypt should Mubarak's Muslim Brotherhood rivals eventually take over.
"He repeated the sentence, 'I have been serving my country, Egypt, for 61 years. Do they want me to run away? I won't run away. Do they want to throw me out? I won't leave. If need be, I will be killed here,'" Ben-Eliezer said.

I completely understand why a guy that saw Sadat being killed by is side for having made peace with Israel thinks this way. That does not mean is predictions are right. There's a generational issue going on here. The same generation that caused this revolution in Egypt is the same behind the Green Movement in Iran. The Iranian regime is apparently celebrating the downfall of Mubarak but, just in case, they jammed BBC along other broadcasters covering the celebrations in Egypt. They are also blocking communications and social media. Something must be worrying them. It would be sweet to see those guys falling. The problem is that they won't go without a fight. Nevertheless, the winds of history are always stronger than anything or anyone. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8511921.stm
good Riddance
Dictators like Mubarak and his Arab peers do not raed history, they are busy stealing and victimising their countries and peoles. Mubarak sadi he was 1973 war hero, because of his role in the Egyptain army as a pilot. Well, that war was a landmark for Egypt, but ended in a military setback anyway. The peace traety brokered by sadat was in reality a disguised capitulation. The Sinai is demilitaised and Egypt national policies were biased towards Israel and the west. Among the most humiliating moment was Egypt's support to Israel's aggressions against Lebanon and gaza respectively in 2006 and 2008 and the Gaza blokade. Egypt had also support the invasion of afghanistan and Iraq. Egypt was instrumental in the US secret tortures and liquidations of Muslim prisoners dubbed terrosits. Egyptians will dsicover the extent of Mubarak crimes and we would surely be in for huge news. Marcshal.Petin was a national hero in France for his glorious role in WW1. In WW2, he collaborated with the invading Geramny and when WW2 was over he was tried and convicted as a traitor. He was executed despite his old age then. Arab dictators like Mubarak want people to traet then like Gods on Earth.
Israel arrogance and lack of movement towards Peace with its neighbors is radicalising the M.E. People got fed-up with their leaders who were taking instructions from America fronting for Israel. It is high time that America and Israel push very hard towards peace in the M.E. the sooner the better as if time passes without any actions there would not be anyone left to negociate with as extremists might take over in Algeria, Syria, P.A. Yemen and Saudi Arabia, yes S.A. do not underestimate the power of the Internet.
I understand his rationale for turning his back on our allies, but it is odd that he did not support the protestors in Iran. Evidently he wants the mullahs to be able to act freely.
Mubarak wanted to keep his presidency by any cost if even by telling lies. Majority of people in Egypt are moderates and peace will continue with Israel, and the minute Israel and the palestinians ends up their conflict, you will see how much the true Egyptian will love Israel. may God bless Palestine,Israel and Egypt. Shalom
Pres Obama is "improving" on all American Presidents before him by letting the heavily armed Taliban, Al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Hamas, and now the Muslim Brotherhood, to have an open field all over Africa and Asia. Ironically, at the same time, fighting them in Afghanistan. He simply changes sides from one day to another, and from one country to another... No consistency whatsoever. All this being the result of his golden mouth conflicting with his dirty, unprincipled mind.
Actually it is clear that a dictator after 31 years can't imagine that something could go well without him. But he might be surprised. Interesting that he used the short time between yesterday and today to talk 20 minutes with a minister of Israel. Shouldn't he have thought of how to resolve the situation?
He ran away to Sharm-Al Sheik. Now he may have to seek refuge in Israel, where part of his booty is stashed away, now that the Swiss have frozen his illegal booty.
LIKE REAGAN USE TO SAY HERE WE GO AGAIN.FEAR MONGER,ISLAMIST WILL TAKE OVER,SO THAT WAY WE COULD ABUSE THE PEOPLE OF THE ME.IT IS OVER NO MAS.
He learned the hard way that when freedom has erupted in the mind of a man, there is no way to stop him. The Berlin wall fell, Mubarak's regime fell, the blockade of Gaza will fall and the apartheid wall enclosing the Westbank will fall.
Egypt has not had a war in 37 years. That is in large part due to Mubarek. America is very fickle friend. Israel should take note.
"he gave me a lesson in democracy" yea, Thats a subject that an autocratic dictator is is qualified to give lessons on. Quick, where is my notepad!
this will only look bad for israel
His dire predictions of the results of democracy in the middle-east are more in line with his own perception of himself standing between radicalism and stability...and much less so the sentiments of the populations involved. The Iranian regime did not rise from democracy, Hamas didn't win the elections as much as Fatah lost them, and would lose miserably if elections were held today. One thing for sure though, the longer the despotic regimes of the middle-east continue without instituting reforms, the more entrenched and organized the radical elements will become. Case in point is Egypt's own MB. They are the most organized opposition group only because everyone else accepted the status quo of political repression. Had Mubarak not repressed any political opposition, there'd be other viable popular political groups that would be just as organized and maybe even stronger than the MB. And let's face it, the Iranian regime is more comparable to his than anything else, and is just as vulnerable to popular unrest that's sweeping the middle-east. Islam is NOT what's driving it.
Mubarak is right. In the coming years Israel will have more Iran-like states on its doorstep threatening to wipe it off the map. I hope Mubarak's wrong, but he knows his country better than the clueless pundits who are expecting a Jeffersonian-style democracy to emerge in Egypt.
"One of Mubarak's Last Phone Calls as President is to a Former Israeli IDF Officer who Massacred 250 Egyptians".
RADICAL ISLAM!
The bottom line is: If the people's choice not yours or that of your interest if people choose sharea law so be it , it's up to them !! Isn't that the democracy that the west has been preaching.
"He said 'I won't be surprised if in the future you see more extremism and radical Islam and more disturbances -- dramatic changes and upheavals," Ben-Eliezer added.?
Young Muslim and Christian Egyptians rejected the calls of religious institutions like the Coptic Church and the Salafi clerics to support Mubarak, choosing instead to join a mass movement of educated, tech-savvy fellow citizens - as well as the less educated to demand democratic reforms.
With an undisputed ego and an inability to listen Israel now needs to be proactive in removing the causes upon which a new Egypt can hang reasons to raise issues. Could a movement arise in Israel against those wanting to affect injuriosly Israel's image abroad.
that the Soros administration is no friend of democracies. While the dictatorship in Egypt has fallen, we must look at how the US reacts to democracies under siege that the American people and FORMER administrations always called friends. Let's review: N Korea murders hundreds of S Koreans and Soros/Obama demands the South stand down; N Korea fires missiles over Japan and Obama says a Japanese response is improper; Israel is subjected to hundreds of rockets fired from Gaza and Soros is silent until Israel strikes back and then screams that Israeli actions "do not promote peace"; democracy seekers are murdered in the hundreds by the ayatollahs with absolutely no comment from the Imam in the WH. The list goes on and on. I only wonder how many allies the US will have left by the end of 2012. At this rate, there will be a new world order. But not the one Soros/Obama sought but rather one comprised of former US allies banding together for security
It was the only excuse he had to continue to bleed Egypt dry and repress its people. It was never going to last forever.
believes that his sole person makes the difference between stability and chaos. A real Pharao, true to tradition.
It's not as if he's a popular fellow, and it's not as if the U.S. had any power or desire to keep him in his job against the will of his own people. But let's remember that he was imperfect but probably did what he thought was best through the years for his country.
Radical Muslims will definitely take over the governments of Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan. It'll be the 6-Day Was all over again. Fortunately, Israel will be better prepared, but Russia and some Arab countries will be in the wings with new armaments for their Arab friends. A new era? Don't bet on it being one of peace and safety.
I would love to know that...anything radical does not suit the will of people for more freedom...so unless radical islam is imposed militarily or through terrorism, not a chance. ciao muby
People need to be free . Their freedom is not incumbant on you creating the fear of mosnters and ogres......Freedom will always win over fears and war mongering....
The Obama administration just hit the last nail on there coffin. they have just open the doors wide open for the Islamic extremist, which in return will thank the obama administration with more revolutions in Arab countries and more suicide bombing on American soil. They only respectable ally of Israel how now been brought down, A big war is headed our way and the garbage Obama administration is doing noting about it, America has lost its global super power! It has back stabbed the closest ally Israel and Egypt! Wow..get ready America your next
The US administration should be happy to see this report. Last I checked, the Egyptians aren't too happy with Mubarak, so the US being branded an enemy of Mubarak is helfpul to US interests. Particularly as some Obama critics had faulted Obama for not coming out more forcefully and quickly against Mubarak. Meanwhile, the Egyptian military is dependent on US aid, so I think that the US may yet have a strong role to play in Egypt in the future, hopefully guiding it towards democracy.
This worst than Fox News!!! What a bunch of paranoid freaks in Israel....worst kind of hypocrisy
