Mubarak signals Egypt succession by taking son to Washington

Gamal Mubarak, long presumed heir to the ageing president, will meet Israeli delegates to peace summit - and maybe even Netanyahu himself.

Gamal Mubarak, son of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, will accompany his father to this week's Washington peace summit in what may be the clearest sign yet that he is being groomed for the succession.

Gamal has long been the center of speculation that he will replace his ageing father - but until now the 82-year-old president has kept his presumed heir at arm's length during high-profile international engagements.

This time, the younger of the president's two sons is expected to meet with Israeli delegates to U.S.-sponsored peace talks with the Palestinians, and perhaps even with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself.

Two months ago Haaretz revealed that President Mubarak, who has ruled Egypt almost unopposed since 1982, is ill with cancer, prompting vehement denials from Cairo.

Over the past year, he has undergone treatment in Germany – ostensibly for back trouble – and France. This week he to return to Paris en route to the United States for talks with French President Nicholas Sarkozy. It is not known if there are also medical grounds for the stopover.

News of Mubarak's ailing health has lent increased urgency to speculation over his successor. The president has not said if he will run for a sixth term in presidential elections scheduled for next year, though he has vowed to stay in office until his last breath.

Mubarak has never appointed a vice president, and there is no political figure of comparable stature to stand out as an election possibility – although Mohammed El Baradei, a former chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has emerged as a possible opposition candidate.

Most observers still see Gamal as the frontrunner for the leadership, however, and a recent poster campaign calling for his candidacy has been interpreted as a push by his allies within the governing National Democratic Party to convince doubters of his ability to lead.

I am an Egyptian citizen among millions of young people who believed in you after I heard your speech in Cairo shortly after you formally became the US President. And I was pleased and very optimistic for the beginning of a new era of Arab-US relations. Your speech called on a lot of people to believe in your vision for freedom, democracy and mutual respect. But in reality we found the reverse happening: you are taking a one-sided stance, always with Israel regardless of what Israel does to its neighbors, and you are supporting tyrannical regimes in Egypt and other Middle East countries-regimes that kill and rob and torture. Should we still hope that you have the intention to fulfill your promises? And finally you shocked us by hosting the brutal Dictator Mubarak to start direct negotiations Quartet!!!!!! How come? This man uses US tax-payer money to deal only through killing and arrest and torture with all those who advocate freedom. That 82 years dictator after three decades of corrupt and irrational and thug-like rule doesn’t care a bit about providing his people with the most basic means of life "bread, power, and clean drinking water"!!!!! Only filthy water, highly polluted air, cancerous vegetable and fruits, and poisonous mass media programs. He poisons Egyptians in their bodies, minds, and feelings. Even a loaf of bread became difficult to get, and in the mean time he got in secret bank accounts billions of us dollars Mr. President: I am sure sir that you know that people die every day in Egypt while waiting in long lines to get bread for their families. Mubarak’s only interest is how to suppress and crush his people and any legal opposition. Mr. President, how do you think such a man can keep peace in a country like Egypt? And the Middle East area???? Mr. President, we are not committed to any deal Mubarak may make with Israel. For he is not an elected president, and we wonder how can you put your hand in his, knowing who he is. Second: you lose the Trust and love of the youth and all people of not only Egypt and the Arab world but sorry to say world wide- peoples who believed you will keep the promises you pronounced in your election campaign. And please do not interfere in Egyptian internal affairs by supporting campaign to let his son jump to the presidency of Egypt And we urge you not to shake the hands of the dictator- killer and torturer because you will stand one day before History. And please remember from the scenario of Iraq & Afghanistan that helping Gamal Mubarak to Jump to presidency will not bring stability in Egypt and the Middle East. And you have to know that this action will be against the US interest. Kind Regards. Egyptian citizen

Mubarak's son has no business meeting international delegations to a peace conference with his father, unless he was invited personally to attend. We know he was not invited. Jamal's place is with the Egyptian people who will or will not vote for him next year. On the other hand, he has the right to be a candidate, if his party approves of his selection.

The folly of making peace with Egypt is that it is a dictatorship and when you make peace with a dictator you do not make peace with the people. In time, the dictator of Egypt will fall and his son will be overthrown, bringing his son lifts any veil of cover and it shows the regime for what it is. The problem with making peace with Egypt is that it is not a real peace and it can flip an become an active enemy state in a day, because it is not a democracy and the people have not made peace with Israel. There really is no difference between the rape and torture rooms of Sadam Hussein and Mubarak, they are both born of the same despotic mindset - I am always amazed how arabs cry about Israel and the west and they can't even revolt against their own despots - they are so afraid of their own dictators while thumping their chests when it comes to anything else, very difficult to take them seriously.

Hosni Mubarak and Hafez al-Assad were both air force generals who went on to become dictators at the head of secular regimes. In 2001, Assad turned over power to his younger son Bashar, who had no military background. Now Mubarak is doing exactly the same thing.

Coming down on a dictator is one thing, but how is Egypt a puppet? Because they won't let Hamas do what it wants in Egypt and embarrass Egypt by firing missiles from it's territory and smuggling weapons? Would you prefer there was war? I bet you would..

Hey ! what's going on here. Transferring the reins of power from father to son !? Like Assad (the lion) handing the Government to his son. But I remember how Mubarak made fun of Syria & Assad,'the lion' & said that in Egypt such a thing cannot happen. Ah ! Of course not. Sometimes when it's raining & dark clouds are above your head,at least you can recall all the Arab Funnies & have a good chuckle !

Egypt has the most US aid after Israel. Opposition parties have extreme restrictions placed on them & activists are imprisoned. It is not a true democracy by any reasonable interpretation of that term.

How sad, that a country of some 80 million thinks it cannot produce one viable alternative to Gamal Mubarak who will surely cover up for all the crimes committed by his father. Egypt today is the laughing stock of the Arab world thanks to decades of corruption, embezzlement and ignorance all perpetrated by the current regime. We have nothing against peace making but Mubarak has been a disaster upon the great land of Egypt. May God have mercy on it and may the right leader emerge to take Egypt out of its dark misery.
