Mideast nearing 'explosion,' Jordan's Abdullah says
Jordanian king: Israel 'playing with fire' by carrying out unilateral actions in East Jerusalem.
By Haaretz Service and DPA Tags: Jordan king Middle East peace Israel news JordanJordan's King Abdullah II warned Thursday that the situation in the Middle East could "explode" due to Israel's building of settlements in East Jerusalem.
"I am afraid the tension could develop into an explosion with all parties paying the price," the monarch said in a speech to the annual conference of Jordanian ambassadors.
His comments came ahead of a meeting this weekend of the Arab League in Cairo, which may herald the resumption of indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
Abdullah accused Israel of "playing with fire" by carrying out unilateral actions in East Jerusalem which the Jewish state captured from Jordan in the 1967 war.
"Israel should choose between living in an isolated fortress in the region or reaching peace with all Arab and Islamic states in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative," he said.
The Arab peace plan, which was launched at the Arab summit conference in Beirut in 2002, offers Israel recognition by all Arab states if it pulled out from all the Arab territories it occupied in the 1967 war, including East Jerusalem.
Two weeks ago, Abdullah told the Chicago Tribune that a war could break out in the Middle East this summer if no progress is made in restarting Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
"If we hit the summer and there's no active [peace] process, there's a very good chance for conflict, and nobody wins when it comes to that," Abdullah said.

Maybe Abdallah wants te West Bank after all. He knows that the Palestinians can't create a viable state. However, its not worth his while unless he is the king of East Jerusalem.
Please let us all know what steps the Arabs took since they anounced the famous peace plan? If it was a genuine plan they shuld have pressed forward to advance it like : 1- Invite arab and Israeli representatives for direct talks and hammer a peace deal.
I agree that Israel has to protect itself but you make it sound like an old "well if I'm going to die, I'll take them with us" Cold War speech. Problem is, "them" will include "us" minding our own little businesses on the other side of the planet.
Just as U.S. told Israel with Biden, it should be said to the king you will pay a price
What King Abdula is saying has been said thousands of times. Nothing to worry. They all fight anyway. They have made up their minds to destroy Isreal one way or another. So what else is new. Israel must defend its life at all cost. Wouldnt you if some one is planning to destroy you? If war it is, war it will be , If peace definitely yes. Let all live and let live in peace. Nothing new under the sun , nothing!!!!
Abdullah should stay out of Israel's internal affairs. Jerusalem is Israel's Capital-City and Spiritual Center since ancient time.
King Abdullah is a decent leader who does NOT want war. However, if there is a war, he might get back more Palestinians than he threw out in the Yom Kippur War.
...it's the Garlic
I find it extraordinary that so many Israelis discount Arab offers of peace, Arab warnings of how the Middle East is building again toward war. With respect, virtually the entire world considers the Arab League pleace plan to be reasonable. That Israel has totally disdained it for over eight years demonstrates to fair-minded people across the world that ISRAEL is the obstacle to peace, not the Palestinians, nor the Arabs in general, nor the Persians. Any long term geostrategic calculation would seem to indicate that Israel faces existential dangers if it doesn't start accomodating what the world considers the legitimate interests of others in the region. It would appear that too many Israelis value only their own interests, and that this is the ultimate strategic danger to Israel's survival over the long term.
Unilateral action by Jews = bad Unilateral action by Arabs = how it's supposed to be
While seemingly for peace, the King of Jordan always adds fuel to the fire. While he could be a source for calm he opts not to. Yet he is called pro-peace. Why? He is pro-war. One who inflames is pro-war. What we truly need is one combined Jewish and Arab state with three provinces in the entire area of the mandate. A Jewish Province and a Palestinian Province and a joint province.
The problem with King Abdullah is that he is not his father, nor is he his grandfather. In fact he is a nothing, an inexperienced brat lacking even minimal status or statecraft. Naturally he fears for his artificial little throne which has lasted this long only because his late father had a brain and a personality. The huge chunk of Palestine called Jordan is not long for this world as a Hashemite monarchy, and the dwarf on the throne is understandably scared.
"It was near exploding when Jordan occupied Jerusalem illegally in 1948." Show us the UNSC resolution calling it illegal... Israel and Jordan had an Armistice AGREEMENT under which Jordan occupied what became the West Bank. You know what 'agreement' means?
The rants from the little King go on and on. Markedly different from the intelligent, focused, peacemaking of his late father. Of course, the love of Hussein;s life was an American woman and Abdullah's Queen is a "Palestinian". Could be part of his motivation for consistent provocation. At any rate, strange behavior for the famiily that mercilessly Occupied the Palestinians from 48-67 and guiltlessly abandoned them in 1967 and summarily boote their PLO out of Jordan in Black September. Lots of noise. No acceptance of any responsibility. All with a cultured English accent and the pretense of being a "moderate" ally. Right.
Israel has isolated itself in the middle east only because it is a democracy among countries of kings and sheiks who do not want to move into the 21st century and live in peace. They prefer blame and violence and have never even attempted to be part of the solution rather than the problem. Many of the Palestinians came from Jordan in the first place when they chased them out.
again, the only ones talking war is the arabs, lebanon, syria, jordan is now in the act, soon turkey's p.m. will be chiming in. The Israeli government stated recently on a few occasions that Israel IS NOT looking for war or the like with its neighbor's notice they the Israeli government doesnt refer to neighbor's as enemies as the arabs do, then eygt makes formal apology that they didnt mean it that way? Too bad they cant be honest and call a spade a spade. Typical arab behavior.
you guys are in the wrong place, actually australia is the promised land,we got everything you can imagine here.
WHy are the warnings of King Abdulah to be regarded with such contempt? If he didn't care about Israel at all or peace he could just pretend to support peace, say nothing, and then launch an attack across the border.
Abdullah was not King then if you recall.
Remind me please, how many tanks he has ?
The only reason his son whines and threatens is not to be perceived as "passive" when his Arab partners are yet once again sable-rattling, puppetted from Tehran. You either detach or don't detach. Israel isn't whining about wanting to live in Gaza. It went absolutely wrong, but one takes responsibility for the mistake of unilateralism. Some people in the region still need to grow up.
For the love of God will somebody please tell the toy king to shut up and stop spreading panic. He should be grateful to Israel for defending his and his father throne now and in the past. Instead of being honest, he keeps attacking and blaming Israel in public as he does not dare do the same to the Palestinians.
America would not admit him ,as ,afraid of Khomeiny ,she wouldn't admit the Shah after mullahs had taken over
Hey!!! I matter!!! The King, a descendant of a Saudi tribe who lost the battle to rule the Kingdom of Arabia and proclaimed themselves the king of the Beduins living on the East Bank of the Jordan River has become irrelevant. It's hard for him to accept
the Arab peace plan offering full recognition of Israel by all Arab states, at a 'cost' of a few acres of land that are not even Israel's, is not taken seriously by Israel. Too simple?
Why didn't Jordan establish a state in the 19 years that they occupied the WB? This guy is the incendiary device.
It was near exploding when Jordan occupied Jerusalem illegally in 1948.
Denying Jewish history is not the way to go for Abdullah. Instead of talking about explosions he should be talking about sharing and acknowledging what drives the other side. Jews are willing to share. Muslims not. So the problem is on your side King Abdullah.
sounds like agitation. I find IT dangerous!
Why do you expect anyone to respect you when all you do is threaten?
