Lebanon to UN: Israel will suffer consequences if our ships are attacked

Israel warns it would use 'any means necessary' to stop Lebanon Gaza-bound flotilla from breaking blockade.

The Lebanese foreign ministry on Tuesday announced that Israel would suffer the consequences for any attack against Lebanese ships heading for Gaza.

In a letter to the United Nations, Lebanese Foreign Minister Ali Ashami wrote that “Israel will be held fully responsible for any attack on Lebanon.”

"[Lebanon] can not prohibit a ship from leaving its ports if its cargo, passengers and destination all comply with Lebanese law,” he added.

Israel has warned that it would use “all necessary means” to stop a Lebanese Gaza-bound aid flotilla waiting for Lebanon's green light to set sale. The "Julia" ship is currently docked at the port in Tripoli, and has apparently received permission to set sail.

Lebanese Transport Minister Ghazi Aridi said Monday he had authorized the ship to sail to Cyprus, saying that a state of war between Lebanon and Israel prevented the boat from heading directly to Gaza.

"Lebanon and Israel are in a state of war and no ship has ever sailed from Lebanon to Israel," Aridi told Reuters. "Now what the Cypriots will decide, I don't know. Cyprus may not allow them to sail to Gaza," Aridi said.

Last week, Israel's UN ambassador Gabriela Shalev urged the government of Lebanon and the international community to prevent the small group of ships from trying to break the blockade of Gaza, warning that Israel reserved the right to use all necessary means to stop the vessels.

Gabriela Shalev sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warning that the attempt by the organizers to sail from Lebanon and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza could escalate tensions and affect peace and security in the region.

"Israel reserves its right under international law to use all necessary means to prevent these ships from violating the existing naval blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip," Shalev wrote.

In addition, the reliance on military force shows a great moral weakness on Israel's behalf and a failure by its people to assimilate in the region. Dutch

According to the transportation minister of Lebanon a state of war exists between Israel and Lebanon. Under international rules of war Israel has the right to capture or sink any Lebanese vessels it comes across, if captured the Lebanese ships become Israeli Property and the occupants become prosoners of war. Lebanon has the same right to attack Israeli vessels. THAT'S WAR

security before freedom or freedom before security. Israel could have it both ways actually, if they allow a third party to inspect the goods at sea prior to entering gaza. The UN could verify all contents at sea from coastal ships off of say cyprus or even from israel proper but israel prefers confiscating all goods then deciding slowly what products pasta or cilantro or cement or wheelchairs may enter and in what quantities. If israel prefers to play its pariah role, so be it. The ships will keep coming, soon israel will need half its army on patrol crafts monitoring gaza waters to prevent spaghetti and wheelchairs from being delivered. I will be very interested to see the price tag of the future anti-spaghetti fleet!

Israel's blockade is not recognised as legal under international law or the UN. Someone needs to shine a light on this cruel and illegal siege of the people in Gaza. I don't think Israel is truly interested in peace... they take land which does not belong to them and then cries foul when the palestinians use the only means available to them to wage a (futile) war on Israel, given that one rocket attack is met by Israel's full military might.

Lebanon should be warned that they are risking a resumption of wide-spread bombing again. Its time for Israel's submarines do do their thing, especially with Iranian ships. It is time to tell the UN to leave Lebanon for their own safety. Stand by for war if these attempts to break the blockade continue. These are attempts to shore up Hamas and arm Gaza to the teeth. It cannot be permitted under any circumstances. Israel must stand up or back down like a coward. It is plain that the UN has allied itself with Hamas and Hizbollah. If the UN involves itself then they are putting themselves in harms way. If you are not for Israel then you are against Israel. A major war is building in the Middle East and the UN is facilitating it. Israel WILL come out on top.

The simple solution is for Cyprus to refuse them docking privileges. Then they could not go to Gaza because they came from Lebanon and not Cyprus. Since according to the Lebanese, a state of war exists between Israel and Lebanon, Israel would have the right to stop them. Even the UN would have to stop them under the resolutions passed after the last Lebanon war.

Their bank accounts, warehouses, and pantries are already full from ill-gotten aid over the years so they don't need any more.

Its an interesting point that Israel is trying to urge the UN and the international community to stem the tide. In past occurances, the UN/international community was generally ignored or treated as biased. Israel's perceived attitude on its principal right to act within "international law" is eroding, given its questionable success rate on the diplomatic front.

Same as with the Iranian ship:send an unarmed border patrol, that would be searched upon boarding the ship to make sure they won't use or plant any weapon, and let them then throughly search the ship at will. The illegal blockade is done with anyway, so this gesture would cost you relatively little. A big plus is that it would all of a sudden easen a lot of the tensions with both Iran and Lebanon. I'm sure some parties in these countries would start saying some praise about Israel.

Isreal kicked Lebenon's butt once before, Can Lebenon afford another butt kicking? Blockade: To stop the flow of goods or weapons from reaching a port. Isreal says if they can search the ships to make sure there are no weapons the goods can go through. Those not allowing searches must be smuggling weapons into a port against a blockade. Therefore I agree with Israel to use all the force nessessary to stop those ships including sinking them. Be searched and go in peace, Run the blockade to make some non-existant point, and die. The choice is in the hands of the people trying to run the blockade.

Israel will not let the ship break the blockade it can't and so the ship will either be boarded with soldiers in riot gear rather than with paintball guns or the ship will be disabled and towed to Ashdod. If Hizbollah os stupid enough to start a war over this then the Lebanese will be the ones needing materials for reconstruction after Israeli bombs and tanks have finished their jobs. If their concern is with Gazans and not just trying to get one over on Israel politically then they will work with Israel instead of against it. They will peacefully dock in Ashdod and they will have their cargo inspected and then delivered overland.

for both Lebanon and Israel to stop playing who can piss the farthest. Add Iran to the list. It is essential to break the blockade, but far better it be done by those countries and groups who do not give Israel an excuse for another war. There is provocation on both sides here and a dangerous game. Let the German Jews send a flotilla, and perhaps other European countries. If it is an Arab country, Israel will have all the excuse it needs to use all those US weapons it bought.

    (1) Why are Israeli leaders actively sabotaging any peace process that may end in a two state solution, something that is largely, according to analysts from ALL parts of the political spectrum, the best end-game for Israel because of the demographic struggle to retain a Jewish identity? (2) Why wouldn't the IDF set up a security checkpoint in Gaza, accept ALL aid after inspection from WHEREVER, and then (somewhat subtly) stop giving aid in the amounts donated by other countries since the minimum aid required would be met. This would make it so other countries like Iran cannot break the siege (there is no reason to, the aid is being let in and distributed by Israel in accordance with International conventions - perhaps even checked for distribution by the UN officials) and, in addition, reduce the Israeli responsibility for this welfare territory. I get that the reaction of the Knesset is meant to be along the lines of deterrence, but ask yourselves: do you find yourself having to defend Israel more or less after the flotilla raid?

ey there, The IDF, and Israeli govnmt are really not trying to sabotage the peace process. The embargo came after years of temporary truces, after 7 years of Israeli cities under rocket attacks, and after operation defensive shield. The embargo is in place to prevent Hamas from rearming. All flotilla aid was indeed brought to Gaza (ironically Hamas refused it). As well, billions of dollars of aid are brought into Gaza annualy, however many substances must be monitored. Prime example is concrete must have a project planned for it, to prevent it being used to build more tunnels under the checkpoints.

      (1) How is Israel sabotaging any Peace Deal? It takes two partners to make peace. The PA is the one that refuses to sit at the same table as Israel to negotiate peace. And then there is Hamas, who openly states that they won't accept any agreement the PA and Israel agree to. (@) How does the IDF set up a checkpoint in Gaza, which is not controlled by Israel, and Israel has no presence in the territory after withdrawing in 2005. Is Hamas supposed to just let a bunch of Israelis station themselves at a port in Gaza to set up inspections?

Israel DOES hav checkpoints in Gaza and tons of aid go in every day. In fact there are multiple recordings on the interent of the Israeli Navy offering the previous flotilla to dock and transoprt ALL the aid to gaza after inspection. The reply was "Go back to Auschwitz" and "don't forget 9/11"

Its like the fox promising the fish it won't eat it- How do you possibly believe you can negotiate with terrorists? First the Arabs have to stop supporting Hamas and terror actions - then talks can begin! Let me ask you, who would you ultimately trust- a Hamas supporting arab or an Israeli? I know I choose the Israeli any day!!!!

Your 2nd Question is valid. Israel likes to give the impression it provides aid. It doesn't it allows or doesn't allow aid to reach Palestinians if it is bought and paid for by others. Israel could easily set up at-sea checkpoints. That is not the point of the blockade-siege.

Not really, according to numerous UN resolutions, or international maritime law. What Israel did to the first convoy can be described in one word: Piracy. Pure and simple, the boarded a ship in international waters, killed the passengers and commandeered the cargo. Sounds like a movie script.

After Israel has lifted the "siege" over Gaza (keeping the naval blockade in place for security purposes only), what will be the gain to the Lebanese activists from sending another ship? By now they realize that they will end up in Ashdod, which they can now do directly, by shipping officially all the humanitarian goods to Gaza through Ashdod? Well, consider the case of the disappearing ship "Miriam". We have seen pictures of the Bishop blessing the women voyagers. Was this an illusion? Perhaps not. The Miriam might be on its way to Gaza right now, going in some roundabout way, perhaps to an Egyptian port, then make a turn and head towards Gaza, and all this time Israel is watching out for the "Julia", a newly announced ship which may simply be a decoy. Perhaps the goal here is to outsmart and humiliate Israel.
