Lebanon says it won't ask Hezbollah to disarm

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said Hezbollah cannot disarm before a defense strategy is reached that would also address future Israeli attacks.

Lebanon's president says the government cannot ask Hezbollah to give up its weapons at a time of heightened tension with Israel.

President Michel Suleiman said Saturday that Lebanon cannot and must not tell Hezbollah to disarm before reaching a deal on a defense strategy that would also address any future Israeli attacks.

A United Nations deal to end the 2006 war between Israel and the Shiite militants required Hezbollah to disarm, but Lebanon's politicians have been unable to agree on a national defense strategy that would integrate the group's weapons into the regular armed forces.

A recent Israeli claim that Hezbollah's arsenal includes Scud missiles transferred from Syria has provoked another exchange of warnings between Israel and Lebanon.

Lebanon is so fragile that it can only say yes to Hezbo. It lives on the edge always having to placate a very divided populace. It is always on the brink. Asking the goverment to stand up to Hezbo is like asking someone to lasso the moon. There are few choices for Lebanon- civil war or keeping their fragile country together, however much they dream.

As long as there are armed groups like Hizbollah with their own agenda ruling areas of Lebanon then there will never be peace or stability for Lebanon. Ben Gurion forcibly disarmed pre state armed groups like Etzel & Lehi because in an independent state there can be only 1 armed force and that force is answerable only to the government. That is supposed to be what the Lebanese armed forces are there for. If HIzbollah had been disarmed then the 2006 Lebanon war would never have happened because unless they were complete fools the Lebanese government would have never ordered the army to go into Israel and kidnap soliders which is what provoked Israel into going to war. Without being ordered to the Lebanese army would not fire rockets on Israel. Hizbollah are the main obstacle to peace with Lebanon and if the government was smart they would introduce legislation allowing only the army to have weapons and all armed groups must hand in anything they have and if they don't then they will be forcibly disarmed. Right now there are foreign troops in Lebanon the government could ask to help disarm Hizbollah. The international community can donate some shiny new tanks & airplanes with the Lebanese flag painted on, hold a couple of military parades down the streets of Beirut and make the people feel confident and proud of their national army who they will feel they can turn to in wartime no need for Hizbollah. The government can then say to the people we have no love of Israel but we are a responsible government in the name of stability we want Hizbollah disarmed and our boys are more than capable of taking on Israel should it come to war. As long as the government formerly allows Hizbollah to keep their weapons then if Hizbollah drag Israel into another war the government will be held responsible same way as they would be responsible if the national army attacked. If Lebanon wants stability and any hopes of peace in the long term these is no other option but to disarm Hizbollah and a mix of brave legislation, sell the idea to the people the army can do the job and with help from international forces Hizbollah can be disarmed or at least delegitimized and without legitimacy its harder to operate.

Lebanon does not have to disarm - Hezbollah does. That was the deal to stop the last war, started by Hezbollah, and brokered by the U.N. The weapons should be transfered to the control of the Lebanese government and out of the hands of Hezbollah. It is crazy for the Lebanese government not to do this - they are in violation of a Security Council resolution, and will never believed again to keep to their word. Lebanon better pray that a new war never starts - it will only end with their absolute surrender as their word means nothing, they have no credibility at all.

You urself can't deny what has happened to the IDF during Lebanon war! they have been defeated and Hizbollah gurrillas have shown better military skills than those soldiers of the IDF! Which is by itself a defeat for Israel. Also, it might be that Israel has a super military power in the ME, but Lebanon and other Arab countries have super people who will NOT leave their land if they were attacked by atomic bombs, unlike Israeli people who will leave at once if there is a tiny threat. So you can think of the real consequences and avoid the "destruction" measures!

It makes a lot of sense to me. Lebanon has no protection except Hezbollah against another Israeli invasion. Any Israeli government can decide it needs a war to solve a domestic political crisis. By making such a war more expensive for Israel, Hezbollah safeguards them.

The government of Lebanon (minus the Hezbollah brawny bait trolled from afar by the Pirates of the Persian Gulf) and the good Lebanese civilians are as much as disposable Arab waste in the proud Persian regime's hands as they craft and execute their militant foreign policy towards Israel. Iran is counting heavily on draining Israel's military resources in confrontations with Lebanon and perhaps Syria but avoiding any damage to their own forces and assets in Iran. A few million dollars thrown after the conflict towards the despised, defeated Arabs and their wrecked infrastructure will very quickly buy back their shallow souls and consciences again when blessed with pacifying proclamations of perceived victory against the superior forces of Israel.

The lebanese know that Hezbollah does not want peace and its existence will only make the war between Israel and Lebanon worse.

Israel entered Southern Lebanon in the 1980's as the civil war was raging. The instability of the area was a threat to Israel. The Lebanese Army was a poor excuse for itself. With Hezbollah Lebanon has a strong military presence and has brought stability to the south. Even if there is a final peace agreement with Israel and Lebanon, Hezbollah will never relinquish its arsenal. This will continue to be an internal struggle in Lebanon unless the government allows Hezbollah to be the national defence force.
