Israeli officer killed in clash on Israel-Lebanon border
3 Lebanese soldiers, one journalist killed as Israeli and Lebanese soldiers exchange fire at border; second Israeli officer seriously wounded.
Tags: Lebanon IDFOne Israeli officer was killed during clashes between Israel and the Lebanese army along the border on Tuesday. 45-year-old Lt. Col. Dov Harari, from Netanya, was a reserves battalion commander in the engineering corps.

Another Israeli officer sustained severe wounds and has been admitted to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa. He is in stable condition.
Lebanese and Israeli troops exchanged fire on the border Tuesday in the most serious clashes since a fierce war four years ago, and Lebanon said at least three of its soldiers and a journalist were killed in shelling.
The violence apparently erupted over a move by Israeli soldiers to trim some hedges along the border, a sign of the level of tensions at the frontier where Israel fought a war in 2006 with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
Harari, father of four, was killed by sniper fire directed at his post. The other officer at the post was captain Ezra Lakia, who was seriously wounded. The two were situated some 300 meters from the border within Israel in a position to oversee the trimming of the bushes along the border fence.
Israel Defense Forces GOC Northern Command Maj. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot announced Tuesday that the two Israeli officers had been very seriously hit during the exchange of fire. Eizenkot said that the incident had been a "deliberate ambush."
Eizenkot told Israeli media that "a routine operation was carried out during the afternoon near Misgav Am – an operation whose purpose was to trim some bushes near the border, in our [Israeli] territory. It was on both sides of the border but still within [Israeli] territory. Officers oversaw the operation from a permanent position. Sniper fire was directed at the officers, and two of them were wounded as a result."
The GOC Northern Command stressed that "this was a pre-planned event, aggression by the Lebanese army who shot at soldiers inside Israeli territory without any provocation. We view this as a very severe incident."

..... this is planned so as to invite anyone with an appetite for mischief to shoot the enemy and pretend he himself was within his own side of the border (which is not a physical line).... and then argue where everybody was ... a recipe for war ! After that, call Goldstone....
To get taken out by the Lebanese Army is truly embarassing. Where was this so-called army when Israel was attacking them years ago??? They are a joke like their airforce of two helicopters. Why would they trim trees in a hot zone anyway??
It occurs to me that this would be a very convenient time for Israel to invade Lebanon (purely for defensive purposes of course). What better way to kick any idea of direct talks with the Palestinians into the long grass?
Dov was obviously an easy target bc of his large size. He should have been home with his family instead of being required to perform provocative acts that would end in his death. Israel doesn't really love her soldiers, or else she wouldn't have put middle-aged Dov in harm's way for no good reason.
I think there is one clear conclusion out of all this mess. Israel does not have the upper hand. An israeli officer got killed and another seriously wounded... but they look to calm it down do not seek any escalation.. after the 2006 war they knew that the outcome of any war is not anymore guarantied... and after today they know that this there are not guaranties even even for tree trimming in their territory....
I feel sorry for the colonel and his family, but Lebanon has suffered so much from Israel over the years that if the Lebanese now want to defend their borders from yet another Israeli incursion, even if it's a minor one, few will blame them.
and will never..........read the history of the Hebrews.
The God is with "Haj Rezvan" group
Hizbollah the terrorist group is controlling everything in Lebanon , he is behind the attack on the israeli soliders today , there is no Lebanese government and the Lebanese army is a puppet for Hizbollah and most of his troops are shia's and supported by iran and syria . We call for an end for this situation and we hope that the israeli government can tak the good decision.
Just like they do all the time, Israel tries to provoke Lebanon into another war by cutting a tree in Lebanon territory. The Israelis are famous for their provocation because they know that with U.S. supplied weapons they can destroy any power in the Middle East. We all know what the Israelis would've done if the Lebanese reached over and chopped down an Israeli tree. It was just last week that the Israelis shot and killed a Palestinian because he was too close to the border even though it was on the Gaza side of the border. Just go back to the days of Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan who even admitted that the capture of Syria's Golan Heights was an act provoked by the Israelis in order to attack and win the Golan Heights. Israeli soldiers fired on farmers on the land until finally one fired back. They easily captured this strategic land and still occupy it today. Now they are trying their best to make up for their embarrassing defeat by Hezbollah 4 years ago. This time they killed 4 Lebanese in hopes this will be enough for Hezbollah to make a move. Believe me, the Israelis live for one thing and one thing only, and that's for war. Is it any wonder that they were voted the "Biggest Threat to World Peace" in an European poll?
Big thanks to Haaretz for posting these photos, as photos #8 and #11 show the Zionist/Jewish Soldier on Lebanese side, destroying Lebanese properties. Would you please allow access to UN Security Council to these photos?

Lebanon men are very strong
I sent numerous memos to the Israeli army not to do gardening in that area.
The Lebanese army asked the U.N. force to arbitrate the issue, but the Israeli forces didn't comply and entered Lebanese territory. That led the army to open fire, with Israeli forces returning artillery fire and hitting a house in the village of Odaise.
It was on both sides of the border but still within [Israeli] territory. Oh really? Both sides of the border are Israeli. You have no respect for the sovereignty of any of your neighbors. You people are spinning out of control and going to destroy yourselves trying to destroy all those around you.
So the conclusion is that this was a planned provoction orchastrated by Hezbo since Hezbo promisses revenges against Israel practically every hour. Also, the pattern of unprovoked attacks on Israelis ON THEIR SIDE OF THE BORDER, is a well know Hezbo pattern that has been going on from 2000 to 2006 and took the lives of many Israeli civilians and soldiers. They know that they cannot stand up to face to face so they ambush soldiers trimming trees. Hezbanon, you are so brave!
This is a recording.
So now it is Israel nearing a fence and feeling how Palestinians feel, how ironic.
The IDF had in the past lied and lied. Why should their commanders to be believed now?
Momyyyyyyyy, I was trimming a tree somewhere on line that is within Israel but is also in Lebanon and definitely on planet earth. You know how tidy and nice I am, I always like my bush trimmed so that we can embelish the whole landscape. But those mean Lebanese came and they don't like tree trimming and they hit me bouhouhouhouuuuu. Come on guys not only you are liars, but you also can't lie sansibly so come up with crazyy gay stories!!!!!!
every act of military operation they commit does not matter where they would claim it's ours.
And let's not lose track of the fact that 4 Lebanese died, only 1 Israeli. Let's think twice before believing Israel's victim hasbara and 'we were only playing by the rules' talk.
Both israelis and arabs don't really want a peace in their region. They lived in war so many years that they don't know how to leave in peace together. Almost all of them were/are soldiers and/or armed militants. They accuse each other of provocation and all the time they blame each other for the starting of a new war. So? Any solution? Maybe somebody will have to leave the region and it will be easier for whom is outnumbered. But where will they have to move? Who knows.
Did I see a terrorist firing missle while guys in the background wore blue berest and waved a blue flag smiling? Deception or UN peace keepers showing true colors?
..... this is planned so as to invite anyone with an appetite for mischief to shoot the enemy and pretend he himself was within his own side of the border (which is not a physical line).... and then argue where everybody was ... a recipe for war ! After that, call Goldstone....
Lebanon is putting up some serious resistance to Israeli armed border probes... Bad news to Israel! Lebanon is strong now, very capable to exercise self-defense... Israeli spies are neutralized, and the IDF is in trouble penetrating the border. Very, very impressive!
Two snipers and a Guy with a RPG "protected by UN (united Nobody's) Soldier waving a Flag !?
Will someone please implement the Delilah option and put an end to this demonic nonsense once and for all!
at 12:00 Lebanese snipers shot two IDF soldiers at an exposed position from 400 meters, killing one and seriously wounding another. IDF forces entered the international boarder to do routine work. 4 hours before that a message was sent to UNIFIL so they'll be prepared and message the Lebanese army, as is customary. The IDF claims this was a prepared ambush. As Lebanese forces request UNIFIL to deliver a message of ceasefire to the IDF Lebanese identified wearing Army uniforms fired RPG rockets at an Israeli tank. The tank crew retaliated with precise fire. The IDF believes this act was the initiative of a local junior Lebanese commander who acted on his own.
"IDF soldiers had been working in complete coordination with UN peacekeepers." - Israeli government If this is true, why don't we hear the UN version? I assume that the IDF wanted to cut down a tree inside Lebanese territory which interfered with its ability to observe some area of interest. Such things happen and can be resolved by Israeli soldiers going in at night and cutting down the tree with nobody getting hurt and the principle of deniability is observed. A problem may be created if Israel decides to do it brazenly and in broad daylight. Perhaps some local commander got drunk with his sense of power. Get rid of him.
The whole goal here was to get obscure the pretense of the clash -- which they accomplished, and get the IDF to overreact -- which they also did. It's a total win for team Lebanon. Because frankly, in the eyes of the outside world, excluding the U.S., any escalation of violence from this point would result in a media disaster for Israel. Contrasting the typical position of Arab countries Syria's immediate response gives them some political brownie points with not just the Lebanese, but also from people within neutral countries outside of the region.
on the Arab side, is to prevent it
What was a reporter doing there?
Sorry, but Israeli territory does NOT exist on both sides of the border.as mush as you would like it to stop trying to steal other peoples land and the shooting will stop.
How can there be peace talks when the Lebanese ambush a gardening party? When building on probably Palestinian ground upsets the terrorists? The sky is falling again Why are we afflicted?.
There is a photo of the Israelis cutting the tree on the Lebanese side of the border fence - there is no doubt that this is an Israeli provocation. The question is why now? Starting another Israeli-Lebanese conflict? Derailing an already-dead peace process? A military flexing of the muscles to impress right-wingers? One thing is certain - peace is never an option.
trees are usually trimmed in February, why now? just curious. I did not know that the IDF does tree trimming!
EVERYONE the world over KNOWS trees are trimmed only in February. IMAGINE those silly Israelis PROVOKING the tree-trimming-honoring Lebanese! Yes, they REALLY got what they deserved. Joel, ...psshhaw, forget it....(how do they TYPE on the computer?!?!)
Pay attention to the picture, a soldier with a bazooka pointing towards Israel and UN troops are mixed with them? Why?
we suggested that they do peace keeping on the other side.. but they preferred the lebanese side...I think we will be happy to give them away
to all doughtfull people just think about it for a second, who is on who's land.
Haha, I'm guessing Israel still didnt learn the lesson from 2006. We all know the story that Israel gives us: "they attacked us, so we're self defending ourselves". I'm sick of hearing the same lies over and over from Israel. Israel needs to stop its acts of aggression and criminal behavior, or else they will have to learn another lesson from Hezbollah again.
in 2006. the fatman is still hiding. they wont laugh now. ambush works both ways.
When the entire world reports this was a Lebanese act of aggression with snipers shooting Israeli soldiers 400 meters away, yet this talk-backer thinks he knows better 8-D. Hezbollah didn't get involved cause they still need to take their pills to stop the shaking every time they hear Israel.
The facts need to be confirmed. If the Israeli story is accurate, that the trees being trimmed were on Israeli territory, then of course the fault lies with Lebanon. As to learning a lesson from the last war, yes there were lessons to be learned. But you speak as if Israel was defeated. It had a fraction of deaths, injuries and damage to property that the Lebanese had. Its soldiers were not on the run on escape routes, like Hezbollah was who retreated north of the Latani. You are lying to yourself but that is characteristic of many, many Muslim's both within and outside the Islamic world. Even if the tree was on the Lebanese side, Lebanon's behaviour was disgraceful. Maybe next time Israel should simply eliminate Lebanon. Too bad, there are some very decent people there but at its heart Lebanon has grown a tumour!
...This is actually evidence of a UN violation, they are acting as sheilds for an Lebanese RPG squad
Debka.com reports that a security camera was being installed when teh Leb opened fire. Now regular Leb Army would not do that. However Huzbullah is at least 50 % sympathizers in teh army. clearly teh focus was not on what teh regular troops were doing, but on teh officer corp that was observing. Two command line officers are now removed. The UN for some reason shielded the LAF shooters. Frankly Lebanon may end up getting it much quicker than it anticipates. Oh yeah Nasrallah is back in his spieder hole hiding.
IMHO the IDF is making false claims. If the Lebanese government is wise they will let Hezbollah take care of keeping an eye at the border. In such case the IDF will not dare to even come close to the border.
Clearly you have niot a clue of what you speak. The fence is on teh ISraeli side so as to eliominate anye xcuse teh LAf and Hizbullah might have to say the IDFG was on teh leb side. It is a buffer area well withion Israeli territory. But now that teh killijng has started who is going to win?
Have you actually been to Israel? Have you observed these borders? I have, actually. And on the Syrian, Lebanese, and Jordanian border, they are all like this. There is a security, buffer zone on Israeli soil. Maybe you should get facts before you type.
Another example of wanton violence. I hope it doesn't escalate.
why don't you just sit back and watch some sitcoms! stop cutting bushes :) do your own first! you stiiinnnkkkkk. cutting bushes!!!! you make me laugh. don't you have better things to do? like training in Romania or something? how about some commando real life experience? any boats coming in? walls to build? tunnels? protests? lol... cutting bushes.... the funniest thing i heard today. next time, it'll be flying kites over the boarder.... IDF Chief: well, technically, the string was on our territory, but the kite was on both sides of the border... it's a pickle i tell yah...
But again, this is self defence. Obviously this was done in order to ensure visual surveillance and legitimately so. Especially, if this is Israeli land, and it will not be hard to document that one way or the other, the Lebanese conduct is wanton, reckless and barberous. If Lebanon is of good faith and wants to avoid this, and the same is true of Israel, there needs to be some agreement to move fences onto the border. Of course, there are strategic reasons for not doing so, which both benefit and burden both countries. In this incident we see the risk or downside of not having the fence on the border.
If you can’t kill civilians, you uproot the trees. A country full of hate and murderess
Your country made Samir Kuntar into a national hero for crushing a little girl's head. And you dare talk?
The border between Israel and Líbano is a dead line of all Middle East....
Only one civilian ! On the other hand, as one Israeli is worth 1000 arabs ( see Shalit proposed deal ), the Lebanese army did pretty well : 1 for 3
Their percentage gets better with time.
Will fill the streets until humans stop screaming and yipping for war on their neighbors.
I don't know how many meters Israel has to work with on the other side of the fence, but the pictures seem to show Israeli soldiers more than just a few meters past the fence. But it looks like Lebanon might be enforcing their border the same way Israel enforces the Gaza border. Israel set the precedent, and they don't like it when it is done to them. Typical. I would say that if Israel wants to trim trees, they should do so ONLY with the UNIFIL forces monitoring exactly how far they cross beyond the fence. Otherwise, follow your own precedent in Gaza, and keep a nice safe distance from the fence.
by that logic, next time Hizballa sends it terrorists together witht their wives and children to demonstrate at the border (they do it from time to time). We should just open fire. Nice logic.
Terrorist infiltrated Lebonon years ago. Hezbullah is now strong enpugh to direct military action within their ranks. How sad Lebonon is still a puppet country with its citizens subject to its conquerers. Anypne with a brain and curiousity to read its history would agree. Peace with Lebanon and Israel would happen in a nano second. A majority of its people are peace loving, business oriented Christians. Others are honest non fundamentalist whose desire is to live and prosper. Then their is the Syrians and Hezbolah funded by the Islamic and nationalistic Terrorists of the world. We are dealing with nothing more than good vs bad. Remember world war ll.
A Lt. colonel present on site of simple bush trimming action. Would not a corporal suffice to oversee the "trimmers"? But the innocent bush trimming took place "near the border, in our [Israeli] territory. It was on both sides of the border but still within [Israeli] territory". In such a case even the presence of a general would by justified.
They were cutting whole trees to be able to see better, not trimming hedges in a garden. The video shows UNIFIL soldiers asking them to get out of OUR territory and they ignored. Lebanese army fired RPG's, Israel sent Apaches helicopters then dead soldiers
My condolences and prayers are with the families of the Israeli officers.
...make sure that when Lebanon is destroyed that the lebanese army does not exist anymore. Simple.
i selute Israeli officer
Lebanon is looking for an excuse to start another war. Israel did everything right: 1. Coordinating with UNIFIL 2. Did not cross the border The next war with its civilians casualties is 100% Lebanon's fault.
nice to see a rational response on this board Obviously you scoured the news before ranting with innuendo. You can always rely on the Ali Baba mentality in the Arab world to officially respond to an incidents that they know nothing about. Checking facts, i'm afraud' is not part of the Arab culture sorry people had to die for this even though that inept, worthless organization called the United Nothing was watching on Thanks Again Thanks again
Both sides are spoiling for war. What difference is it if a tree cut down starts a war? The spiral down of Israel's prestiege will accelerate. They want Israel to attack and kill 10,000 innocent civilians. Stop the insanity and fight them in the press. War is abhorrent to both friends and foes of Israel.
Since when is trimming hedges became an act of provocation? Sadly a good man Lt. Harari died as a result of Hizbo's ambush. My reaction would be to muted as that of the Israeli leadership.
Israel wins (Psalm 83)!
I might have done once, but after Lebanon 2, Cast Lead, Freedom Flotilla etc. etc. I simply don't know whether to believe any of its public pronouncements over something like this. It never admits mistakes unless forced to, never ciriticises its own soldiers unless forced to, always blames someone else. The IDF officer's comment that they wanted to clear shrubbery on both sides of the border followed by a claim it was definitely in Israel doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
I've visited the boarder, and know exactly why there was a mistranslation. I'm not the first to point this out--but to respond: there are two fences, the farthest is the official boarder, and the one a few meters from it (closer to Israel, within Israeli territory)_is Israel's own fence. "On either side of the border/fence was referring to the fence within Israeli territory. When you visit it from the Israeli side, you are not allowed to go in between the Israeli fence and the official border as a civilian.
Another note. You are suspicious of Israeli media, yet you readily fault Israel for Lebanon 2 (war with Hezbolla), Cast Lead (war with Hamas), and Freedom Flotilla (IHH-attempt at deliberately breaking an Israeli law). All of these confrontations are very complicated, and you should question media on both sides before you're quick to lose confidence in just one side. I didn't hear Hezbolla, Hamas, nor IHH criticize their own.
Arab world - Opposite to its Leader - is boiling against Israel aggression, oppression and Arrogance despite their sincerer intention toward peace....Its going to take one brave man act to bring it to the point where Israel regrets all this missed opportunities ....and its coming
What a surpise typical arabs!
Isn't there an international committee to investigate? Of course not, this wasn't provoked by the Israelis (oops, I forgot-they were cutting trees) So sad for the families of the soldiers who died defending our borders.
Israel is always looking for an excuse to kill a few hundred Lebanese civilians. Watch out for the invasion....
"the officers stood on a permanent position when snipers fired" So we let them standing duck in a position the enemy can reach easily ?????? I start wondering about the chochma of the IDF
Israel does it almost everyday with their air crafts but unfortunately we don't have the equipment to shoot it down! I as Lebanese who doesn't support HA... support the Lebanese Army and what they did today and so do most of the Lebanese... the Israeli shouldn't touch a stone or a tree or anything from this land! UNFIL tried to stop it by waving flags and making calls but as usual Israel always thinks they are above the international law and whatever they want to do!
yah,,, isreal wants to cut down a tree. thats really its main focus guys. OPEN YOUR EYES. SOMETHINGS NOT RIGHT. obviously isreal is to blame. always.
On Israels border with Gaza, Palestinians are subject to be shot on the Gaza side of the border if they are anywhere near the fence or if they are approaching the fence. On Israels border with Lebanon, Israel has tried to establish their right to go anywhere they like. It is routine for the IAF to overfly Lebanon in spite of any UN resolutions or Lebanese objections. Israeli patrols also routinely cross over the border. This has gone on for years. It is only recently that the Lebanese have made any attempt to defend their airspace and their border. Natually Israel considers this unfair. Deterrence works both ways. If the Lebanese want to keep the IDF and IAF from routinely crossing into their nation, they will have take action against them. Crying and complaining won't help. America and the UN won't help. They must do it themselves.
Israel is not hell-bent on the destruction of Lebanon as a people or nation. Lebanon, Syria and other thigs to the north want nothing more than Israel's annihilation.
1. The security fence is placed tens of meters in Israeli territory, partially to ensure that Israel can keep the far side of the fence from being over grown by vegitation for hizballa terrorists to hide behind like they did when they invaded Israel and killed 2 Israeli soldiers a few years back (stealing their bodies in the process). 2. The officer who was killed was a few hundred meters from the security fence IN ISRAEL in a permanently manned position. He was shot by snipers who could not have had any confusion that he was in Israel. 3. Lebanese civilians (and hizballa terrorists in civilian clothes) come up to the border all the time, no one gets shot. 4. Please provide evidence of your claims that israel gournd forces "routinely cross the border". That's just a lie. 5. Israel and Lebanon are and have been in a state of war since 1948. Lebanon also hosts numerous terror organizations and in particular Hizballa who are bent on the annihilation of Israel and extermination of its Jewish population. As far as I'm concerned, overflights to collect intelligence to prevent the next terror attack make perfect sense. If Lebanon would disarm the terror organizations and show that their territory will not be used to attack Israel, I'm certain the overflights would cease. Unfortunately it appears that rather than Lebanon taking control of Hizballa, Hizballa is taking control of Lebanon.
Those photos are unambiguous. Lebanese troops pointing weapons at Israel, and UN troops standing in the middle waving UN flag. HUMAN SHIELDS! UN out of Lebanon. You are not neutral.
with Hizballah behind the scene things are different, and it is for Israel interest to have a very fresh memory & not to follow unplanned events...
with Hizballah behind the scene things are different, and it is for Israel interest to have a very fresh memory & not to follow unplanned events...
and you don't get shot at. That's what the Palestinians are repeatedly told. What's good for one is good for another. Wise up.
They could have shot the bushes down with a machine gun--but you know those tree-hugging Lebanese are!
they didn't. the border is further up. they trim bushes all the time. there was sniper fire, fully incalled for.
Palestinians approach the Gaza fence for aggressive purposes whereas Israelis approached the Lebanon border fence for defensive purposes, but this is clearly a distinction that eludes you.
Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, PFLP, the Lebanese govt, Hezbollah and the Arab League all claim Israel shouldn't exist. Israel is protecting both borders and Arabs attacking on both. Ashamed's analogy is false.
Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, PFLP, the Lebanese govt, Hezbollah and the Arab League all claim Israel shouldn't exist. Israel is protecting both borders and Arabs attacking on both. Ashamed's analogy is false.
Lebanese come up to the border all the time and don't get shot. Pals from Gaza approaching the border with Israel to attack Israeli soldiers do get shot. So is it your view that an Israeli soldier clearing out vegitation inside Israel's borders deserves what he gets? He's a 45 year old reservist, probably married with kids. His wife's now a widow and kids orphans though he'd done nothing wrong. You seem pretty glib about that.
The IDF has business to be at the border. A lone Palestinian has no business by the border because there is nothing there. He is not guarding the border, he is trying to sneak into Israel. There IDF soldiers were doing routine guarding by the border. It is a murderous act by the Lebanese army, or by some idiot who was holding a gun in the Lebanese army.
the fumes in New York must be affecting your brain.
It is well known that Lebanese hate tree trimming.
How true! They always wanted their arborists to be paid in food when they were supplying cedar for the Temple.
ambushes can go two ways and an israeli ambush will be much deadlier. and US aircraft carriers aren't far away. remember this started in 2006 with hesbollah ambushing Israeli soldiers again on the israeli side of the border, Lebanon got the worst of it
Hizballa LOVES having a lot of bushes and trees to hide behind when they're waiting to kidnap Israeli soldiers inside Israel as they did just a few years ago. Israel learned its lesson, placed the fence well within Israeli territory and keeps the far side of the fence clear of vegitation.
Israeli officer says "It was on both sides of the border but still within [Israeli] territory. " Israel needs to be clear about borders and they just refuse to do that. No other country treats its orders as temporary as Israel does on its own choosing. Amazing.
and this is not what he said. He said "fence" not "border", which is built inside Israeli territory so that it can be maintained from both sides. Amazing, huh?
The Israel/Lebanese border is defined and not in dispute. Except for Taba farms which some say is Syrian territory and others say is Lebanese. And there's that village that straddles the border. But otherwise the border is not in dispute. But those who hate Israel never miss an opportunity to vilify it.
...or is this a computer programmed to say the dumbest, most repetitive things about Israel on various forums?
There is a security fence running along the border between Israel and Lebanon, but often the fence does not mark the border line itself due to terrain difficulties. In some cases, internationally recognized Israeli territory is on the Lebanese side of the fence. In these circumstances, visits to this area for maintenance are coordinated with the UN in advance - as this visit was.
He said "both sides of the fence but still within Israeli territory", Haaretz botched the translation, it'd be nice if they'd fix it.
You should understand the facts before spouting off. There is Israeli territory outside the fence. The article clearly explained that. Only this Israel hater is so quick to comment that he doesn't let the facts get in the way.
Lebanon has been taken over by the fanatics. A bad omen; but worse for the future of Lebanon. At least Britain as usual will bash Israel and protect Lebanon.
Britiain will bash Israel and protect Lebanon, and so will the rest of Europe and most of the world. So what else is new?
but Lebanon is under the influence of the French.who were the former colonial power.
Is this possible??????????? and this comes from the mouth of the commander.
Lost in translation. He said "on both sides of the fence, but still within Israeli territory".
On their Hebrew cite, Haaretz quotes him as saying that it was on both sides of the fence but within Israeli territory (the security fence is built many meters within Israeli territory). Haaretz mistranslated it and both makes the officer look foolish and makes Israel look like the agressor. I tried to post a talk back on this but for some reason Haaretz hasn't posted it. At least they could correct the translation.
Israel built its fence within its territory. It was not built by the UN.
Line. The Blue line is the internationally recognized border (as demarcated by the UN). So they were still on Israeli territory even though they had crossed the fence. Problem is the Lebanese dont recognize the blue line.
There is a security fence in Israel that is separate from the border fence. The Israelis were operating on both sides of the security fence but always on the Israeli side of the border fence. The trigger happy Lebanese are going to pay a heavy price if they don't stop playing these dangerous games.
look... everything between here and the Litani is ours. And the olive groves and the ancient land of ... ...
I would disagree on that one knowing where the separation wall in the WB is build
let the UN do the job. stop provoqing the other side.
Tell me James Boy, how is hedge clipping a provocation? They were operating within Israeli territory and were ambushed by Lebanese snipers. Probably Hezbollah snipers since they are part of the government now and infiltrating the army. The provocation is solely on the backs of the Lebanese. They will be lucky to walk away from this with just a bloody lip from having been tactically outgunned by the Israeli soldiers responding to the ambush.
OMG, I feel out of my chair when I read that post. Jimmy, please. Let the UN do the job?! Are you for real? You should read more...
"It was on both sides of the border but still within [Israeli] territory. " Huh?
Lost in translation. The fence is few meters inside Israeli territory.
Tyhe fence is some souther from the border.
Isn't the UNIFIL force supposed to be a Peace-keeping, in-between, buffer zone force?
Would you risk your life by standing between two armies of trigger happy religious fanatics?
Because the UN hates Israel more than the Lebanese hate Israel. At least they are wearing blue hat so you can tell who to shoot.
self defense. See they are under indiscriminate fire. The only kind the IDF uses in these kind of situation.
You would thing the UN guys would ask the Lebanese soldiers to not point the weapons at the Israelis repairing the security fence. All we need is for the mind of one of those RPG-toting Rambos to drift off to the next attempt at breaking the record for the biggest humus and we could have an all-out war.
It does not take a genius to realize that when you cross the border to do work, without permission or liaison with the UN and the other side, you are asking for trouble. Candians would not do that on the border with the US even if we are at peace for hyndreds of years. For Israel to do it reflects on either the intelligence or the aggressiveness of those involved.
Furthermore, illegal Mexicans and Canadians sneak into the US every day and we don't shoot them.
The fence is inside Israeli territory, and the operation was done in coordination with UN. Your post also reflects on your intelligence (or lack thereof).
THe UN force was informed in advance. The IDF did NOT cross the border and enter Lebanon.
How about reading the article so that you don't make a fool out of yourself on a public forum? The Israelis were operating in Israeli territory only.
with UNIFIL was not obtained by Israel prior to crossing? How do you know? Where is your qualification? You know nothing.
1. They didn't cross the border. Israeli territory extends for a few meters beyond the fence. 2. who says they didn't coordinate with UNIFIL?
It was on the Israeli side. Yet another cross-border ambush.
Read post #9.
1. there was no border crossed; 2. this was coordinated with UNIFIL beforehand. Read the facts, don't interpret them!
Hey Knuck! Israel DID inform the UN who informed the Lebanese Army (yeah, riiight, "army"!).... Information was relayed and a response was logged. Do us a flaovor:stick to what you know, ike hockey and processing beer....
Right, it does not take a genius to read the facts before writing. You have to be actually pretty dense or malicious to ignore the facts in order to get your twisted take on reality. 1) There was no border crossing - the fence is inside Israel and so is the tree that was being trimmed. 2) There was liaison with UNIFIL and they notified the Lebanese army.
The fence in Israel is a ways away from teh actual blue line demarcating the actual border. They were working inside Isreli territotry after having advised teh UN. perhaps teh Un ran to Hizbullah to tell them about teh work. result leb and IDF blood spilled. Now to see where this all leads. if I were Netanyahu. I would put Hizbullah and Lebanon and Syria on formal notice. One more round and iots all out war..
There are 2 explanations for what happened, it looks like based on latest reports that this was a pre-planned ambush and the Lebanese army, directed by Hezbo, prepared this provocation or that Lebanese moron slodiers with their grade 3 education do not understand the cocept of a fence near the border but well within Israeli territory. In either case this is a clear Lebanese/Hezbanese provocation. You are forewarend. DO NOT MESS WITH US; WE ARE MUCH MUCH MUCH STRONGER THAN YOU.
Is this inside Israeli territory? Sorry, can't tell: http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20100803/capt.fda050156d1c46cb93cebda4ca1d408a-fda050156d1c46cb93cebda4ca1d408a-0.jpg?x=400&y=266&q=85&sig=dGa3LgRNn39xZ3lTcNyJbA--
yeah we know, we saw that in the 2006 war :p
oh sorry next time we will send our Harvard grad. unit to slap u around!
that israeli genius soldiers with their high school education are keeping EXACTLY in the the few meters between the fence and the borders? With all that arrogance about he moron soldiers with their grade 3 education on the other side ...
DO NOT MESS WITH US; WE ARE MUCH MUCH MUCH STRONGER THAN YOU.???? Israeli strength comes from European and US support, based on their sympathy after the Holocaust and the belief that Israel was threatened by its neighbours. However this incident and your comment, as well as similar action (e.g. killing crew of Gaza aid ships) is destroying your support from the West - why should we help arrogant bullies? Without US money and weapons and European diplomatic support, Isael will not be able to push around its neighbours. If the world removes your nuclear weapons from you, cuts off your funding, and forces you to respect international law, you will have to change the attitude reflected in your comments.
A person with a grade 3 education would have understood more than u the real story, people like u will never bring peace to our people.
And build the fence on the actual border? But no, Israel loves vague borders. It makes illegal land grabs easier.
Israel is incapable of understanding the concept of an international border. Did they think the meandering path of the West Bank security fence was an international border? Not to mention the border disputes with Lebanon
Clearly you have no understanding of the situation. You're also a bigot making such racist claims against the education level of the Lebanese military.
That explains why the IDF got kicked out of Lebanon in the 2006 Lebanese War..
here is Israel seeking peace , .. tanks, on call artillery, just a simple tree cutting to clear a field of fire to the villages down the road. Israel is glutted with ordinance.and Lebanon is more or less defenseless. The Lebanese are not the ones looking for war.
that there are Lebanese snipers at the ready (probably just smoking their nargila), and a reporter waiting (nothing better to do) - all standing there to seek peace. yaright ...
Oh, those poor, poor Arabs - always the victims, huh? Problem is, the world buys their fake stories!
the ravings of a 15-year old.
....the tree cutting is so that your Hezbollah buddies don't get hurt while planting explosives by the side of the border road while hiding behind them. I suppose that even for Hezbollah, there are some places where you can't convince Lebanese civilians to give you cover.
Every country maintains a military presence on its borders, even with countries it is at peace with. Look at California, Arizona and Texas, states that border Mexico - there are more US forces there than many countries' entire military strength
Israeli commandes want us to believe that Week Poor Lebanses army will instigate a fight with Israel... either they are stupid or they think we are stupid to believe this
read the facts and sure, I'll call you Mickey mouse!
Hizbullah who is about to be singled out for assassination of the former Lebanese President has snipers all over the area. They could have shot first, engaging Israel , the army steps in and they fire back. Hizbullah is not exactly immune ro starting fights
One Israeli officer was killed during clashes between Israel and the Lebanese army along the border on Tuesday. enough is enough!
The violence apparently erupted over a move by Israeli soldiers to trim some hedges along the border. enough is enough!
Then the Lebanese initiated the violence, shitwit.
If Lebanon initiated it. Why was there Israeli's on the Lebanese side of the fence?
1. You say if. How do you know it was a routine operation? Because some guy who is looking to cover his ass said so? 2. You have no problem with the IDF killing Gazans who come near the border. Why shouldn't the Lebanese army do the same thing at their border?
The Lebanese army doesn't like Israel pruning trees on their side of the border. Was Israel provoking or inciting? Please keep a check on your limited vocabulary!
Crossing the border to other countries as well as flying F16 all over Lebanon is ROUTINE OPERATION.... I am not sure why Americans are pissed when the Mexicans do routine operation in Texas and Arizona
A routine operation can be made in your neighbour s house not yours cause in that case it will be agression.
Of course....Routine....Yes Israel routinely crosses borders or even move them if they do not fit. Some routines should be abolished!
y cant there just be peace y dont the israelis just stop all this bull shit and stop making heroes and idols out of nothing there must be a solution cmon both sides
y muslims always have to shoot rockets (6 yesterday, a few more in the last few days), y they deny thousands of years of jewish history, y they don't concentrate on building a life for themselves rather than trying to destroy others', etc., etc.
Its Lebanon fault, they started shooting. Those lebanese Arab never learn a thing from the past.
LOL. poor lil Israel... Those Lebanese bullies, What choice do we have???? Ambushed. while gardening.
LOL. poor little Israel... Those Lebanese bullies, What choice do we have???? Ambushed. while gardening.
We learned to be brave with verry little ressources!!!
y cant there just be peace y dont the israelis just stop all this bull shit and stop making heroes and idols out of nothing there must be a solution cmon both sides
The first reports say that Israel was trimming vegetation and they were fired upon, and you say 'Israel should stop all this bullshit' What do you know already that the rest of the world does not? once again knee jerk condemnation of Israel and their soldiers body is still warm..
At where the border really is? The fence should be exactly on the border to prevent such needless violence.
Sarah, If that was even possible...who is going to help "hammer and Nail" the other side. That would mean that both sides would be able to cooperate with each other on territory...problem solved! I don't know what to make of this story, I don't even know who to believe.
no, there should be 2 fences on each side of any official border. but since israel hosts AND MAINTAINS the 1 fence, they trim the bushes to prevent terrorist activity, such as hiding, planting bombs, etc. doing this work, they work shot at and killed.
There is a fence exactly on the border. But Israel, as it's allowed to do so on its territory, built another fence slightly inside Israeli territory in order to detect infiltration attempts. One would presume that any electronic detection devices that Israel would install on the border fence itself would be stolen or disabled in a matter of hours. Get it now?
