Israeli Arab MK Zuabi: IDF boarded Gaza flotilla ships with intent to kill

Zuabi testified before UN panel probing Israeli naval commando raid that left nine Turkish citizens dead on May 31.

Israeli Arab MK Hanin Zuabi testified before a United Nations panel probing Israel's deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in May, telling the panel that commandos who boarded the ships intended to kill, Army Radio reported on Tuesday.

A UN inquiry team began hearings on Monday with Jordanian activists about the May 31 Israeli raid on a Turkish ship trying to break an Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. Nine Turkish activists were killed in the raid.

So far, Israeli Knesset member Zuabi and six others have been interviewed.

"It was evident from the beginning that the commandoes viewed all of us activists as terrorists, Zuabi told The Associated Press after her testimony before a three-member UN team headed by Karl Hudson-Phillips, former judge of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Israel's use of large numbers of elite troops with sophisticated weaponry showed it intended to kill the passengers, added the lawmaker, who was aboard the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara, where the killing took place.

"We were very peaceful activists, but the commandoes came to kill," she said.

Israel has refused to cooperate with this probe, accusing the UN Human Rights Council of bias. But it is working with a separate UN group led by New Zealand's ex-Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer and Colombia's ex-President Alvaro Uribe that is examining the legal ramifications of the incident.

Israel's military has already wrapped up its own investigation, finding that intelligence failed to predict the violent response but troops acted properly under the circumstances.

The panel is due to report back to the UN Human Rights Council during its next session, between September 13 and October 11.

The Knesset in mid-July voted to revoke three parliamentary privileges from Zuabi (Balad) due to her participation in the aid flotilla that sailed to Gaza.

Thirty-four lawmakers voted in favor of stripping Zuabi's privileges and 16 voted against, after a heated debate, in which Zuabi accused her fellow lawmakers of punishing her out of vengeance.

Zuabi responded to the Knesset vote by saying, "It's not surprising that a country that strips the fundamental rights of its Arab citizens would revoke the privileges of a Knesset member who loyally represents her electorate."

The UN fact-finding mission is chaired by Karl Hudson-Phillips, former judge of the International Criminal Court at The Hague.

Israel has refused cooperation with the team, claiming it lacks neutrality.

She is a liar. The "weaponry" used by the Israeli soldiers consisted of "paint guns", that only lay color on the target, without causing injuries. But later on, when the soldiers were violently attacked by the IHH members, they had to use their personal weapons.

There were a hundred ways to stop the vessel, by ramming it using a battleship or destroying the probellers using some precision weapons. They did not do it because they wanted to kill to scare the world. To transmit the message to anyone: "come to Israel to die, we kill you if you violate the blockade", as simple as that. Israel is Okay with a killer image because nobody punishes it for it, so why not having it ? What Israel did was a crime by any legal point of view, any legal point of view I repeat.

When you buy a ferrari, it's obvious you want to drive fast?!!! When you have a gun, it's ovious you are ready to kill?!! When you send soldiers, it's obvious you are ready to battle?!! The intention of the IDF are so very clear and the nine dead are the proof of that. Now Israel has to proove the intentions of the other side, to show these intentions were very bad. Did they have guns? Did they send soldiers on the boot from Ankara? If Israel can not proove that, his stance will be very bad!!!!!!! Good luck, I hope you find a solution for that!

People don't always buy Ferraris to drive fast. They buy them because they are expensive and a status symbol. There are many guns in my family, yet we have never killed anyone with them and do not plan to in the future. If it were an Israeli peace flotilla going to Turkey the Turks would have responded the same way, if not worse, to armed "peace activists." They fired in self-defense after being beaten and stabbed. It's pretty simply to see that from ALL the videos.

BBC's Panorama's (no great friends of Israel) report on the incident - which can be seen on YouTube - speaks more than this woman who lies likes she breathes. In any other Western country, she's be tried for treason and convicted. Like all the Israel-bashers on this forum, she conveniently forgets to mention what we all saw with our own eyes, violent activists preparing to confront the Israeli commandos with iron bars and knives. They wanted martyrdom and the Israelis didn't want to be beaten and stabbed to death. Only someone as blindly hateful as Zoabi could pretend to fail to predict the result. How stupid does she think the world is? If the intent was to kill, why did the seizure of the other boats go off without so much as a scratch? Answer that, MK Zoabi.

Take a look at the footage the activists shot of themselves. They had members that said they wanted to be martyred and when you see the people rushing at the soldiers with whatever they had on hand, you know that that sort of thing can't end well. They weren't peace activists. Peace activists would have at least just sat down and done nothing. Nothing. Over here, even people that just do nothing like lying or sitting down to protest get tasered. They are asked to comply or leave and if that doesn't work, they get tasered. That's the way things are today.

According to her own story, Zuabi was on the lower deck during the IDF's takeover of the Marmara, so she cannot claim that she "knows" what the soldiers' intent was. She is entitled to her own thinking, but this is not what the HRC Commission will make use of. Unfortunately, the Balad party seems to be against the existence of the State of Israel, although they cannot admit it, or else they will be barred from running for the Knesset. The founder of the party, Azmi Bishara, left the country as it became known that there was evidence against him for assisting Hizballah. I don't think parties should be barred for any political view, because it is better to know who you are dealing with. Of course, criminal acts taken against the state should be punished by law.

    • Mikesailor
    • 31.08.10
    • 18:09

I am still amazed at the Israeli propoganda permeating many responses concerning this incident. Garbage distractions about 'paintball guns' etc. The facts are pretty clear. Israel boarded a humanitarian ship in international waters at 4 in the morning while depriving the ship of all communications with the outside world. They rappelled from helicopters onto the deck of the ship after using tear gas, stun grenades and snipers to 'clear the landing zone'. After landing they killed 9 of the passengers and injured many more. Many of the dead have shown they were shot at close range if not executed outright. Furthermore, they confiscated and still will not release all of the media documenting the event unless it is media which was carefully edited by the perpetraters of the attack. They also stole, and sold, various personal items of the caprured passengers and crew. And they expect everybody to believe their farcical excuses. I guess there are still some who believe the Israeli version of events. There are still people who believe the world is flat. Yet the overwhelming evidence points to the truth within Zoabi's story. And that, to Israelis, is 'treasonable'. When a people refuse to examine the facts, because they create a cognitive dissonance with the well produced illusion and distraction promulgated by those at fault in this escapade, reality is discarded because it does not comport with what one 'wants to believe'. After all, why would one believe there own 'lying eyes' when they can comfortably accept the lies and distortion which buttress their deeply held illusions.

The IDF boarded a ship attempting to run a blockade. The stated intentions to breach the blockade continued in international waters, which made it legal to board. The intention of the passengers on the ship was to assault the Israeli soldiers. They did and they reaped the consequences. They were fighting at close range, imbecile. That's why they were killed at close range. Do you think they stabbed and bludgeoned the soldiers from a distance?

These guys boarded the ship with paintball guns as a basic deterent but they had pistols for if their lives were at risk, you never send any soldier on an operation without some means of self defense for if their lives are put in danger. They came with their paintball guns and were lynched by a mob with iron bars, knives, clubs, some soldiers had their pistols stolen, they tried to throw one soldier over the side of the ship. The only real mistake when they boarded that ship was they should have been armed with riot gear ( tear gas, rubber bullets ) instead of paintball guns that way had their been any violence it could have been controlled with non lethal force. Barak wanted to put on the image of the good moral IDF who come aboard with paintball guns not riot gear or live ammunition and it backfired. As for Zuabi she isn't the honest miss sweet and innocent she is making out to be. She claimed she was trying to evacuate the wounded but she was shown on video arguing with the IDF doctor who wanted to evacuate them and saying they want to stay and he had no right to take them away. So where was the Zuabi that was rushing to evacuate the wounded? She is an MK not an ordinary citizen as such she does not have the same freedoms that everybody else does. If she felt so strongly about things she was welcome to discuss the matter in the Knesset but not take part in an illegal attempt to breach the blockade.

Explain the video evidence the soldiers attacked by a mob I would have thought if they were just planning to kill and injure then why not just start shooting that way nobody is going to get near you and your own life is not in any risk. If they were there to kill wouldn't it have been more logical to give the soldiers rifles which are more accurate, carry more ammunition that a pistol at the very least carry the rifle as well as the pistol that means you still have the pistol as a last resort self defense weapon? USE YOUR BRAIN As for Zuabi being a voice of truth can you please explain to me why she claimed she was trying to evacuate the wounded when she is seen on tape arguing with the doctor. He is saying he wants to evacuate them Zuabi is arguing with him saying they want to stay on the ship and saying how she is an MK and he has no right to evacuate them? Zuabi is nothing but a liar and there isn't a word of truth in her statements. Come on Yaacov based on those facts explain to me why she is the one speaking the truth?

Clearly, Israeli Arabs having such views cannot live with Jews in one state. Hopefully, Abbas and Netanyahu will sign an agreement. Israeli Arabs will give up their Israeli citizenship (of a country whose army supposedly tries to kill them) and get a Palestinian citizenship instead (they claim they are Palestinians). Zuabi is good in convincing everybody this is the only solution. Israeli Arabs will vote for Palestinian parliaments, and if they are not pleased with Palestinian democracy, well, they will have to complain to Fatah or Hamas.

zoabi is racist. one can argue the legality or ethics of seizing the flotilla, but one cannot argue that the soldiers intended to kill people. What would Israel possibly gain by intentionally killing people?! the only way someone can claim this is if the person is racist and thinks that idf soldiers are all evil.

Yea, Right! The video shows it all, from the so called passengers making weapons prior to the IDF boarding the ship, to the passengers singing antisemitic battle songs. Deadly force was not used until the passengers became combatants, by attacking a legal military operation. Then we have the video of the passengers mob attacking the the IDF soldiers as they repelled onto the ship. Sorry girl, you are simply a liar. But now you can be tried for perjury, in Israel. As we can see here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alan-dershowitz/israels-actions-were-enti_b_596285.html The passengers may have lost their status as civilians, once they knowingly entered into a combat operation.
