Israel to release Turkey ships seized during Gaza flotilla raid
Turkey has formally asked Israel a number of times to free vessels; Spanish activists aboard Mavi Marmara to sue Israel for crimes against humanity.
By Barak Ravid Tags: Israel news Gaza flotillaIsrael has decided to release three Turkish-owned ships that took part in a humanitarian aid flotilla raided by the navy en route to the Gaza Strip two months ago.
The Israel Navy raid sparked international outcry and escalated tensions with Turkey after nine activists were killed and several more wounded.

The navy had dropped commandos onto the ships after the activists refused Israel's offer to dock at the Ashdod Port and have their cargo transferred to Gaza. The commandos came under attack the moment they entered the vessel, and three of the soldiers were seriously wounded.
The ships were subsequently towed to Israel's harbors and have been sitting in the Ashdod and Haifa ports since then. The Turkey embassy has officially asked the Foreign Ministry on a number of occasions to release the vessels, which are owned by non-governmental companies in Turkey.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman finally acceded to the request during deliberations on Thursday. In the past, Israel had said it would agree only if Turkey could guarantee that the ships would never again be used in a flotilla aimed at breaking the Gaza blockade.
No such condition was given this time around.
The Defense Ministry will coordinate with a Turkish delegation to see a fleet of tow vessels brought over from Turkey in the coming days to pick up the three ships.
Relations between Israel and Turkey – once close allies – have soured in the wake of the raid, after an already tense year over the Israel Defense Forces' 2008-2009 offensive on Gaza.
Israel has refused Turkey's demand to apologize for the raid and compensate the families of the victims, though it has said that it regretted the loss of life.
Meanwhile, three Spanish activists who were aboard the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara ship during the raid plan to file a law suit against Israel for alleged crimes against humanity.
The 83-page document takes aim at Netanyahu, his forum of top six cabinet ministers and the Israel Navy.
The three Spanish activists told the Republica newspaper that Israel had arrested them illegally and deported them by force, after subjecting them to hardships during the raid.

There is no mention anywhere of this supposed guarantee Turkish noovernment gave about preventing these ships from taking on similar missions in the future. In fact ,Turkish government can not give such a gurantee over the use of private property by private owners for any legal activity even if they wanted to. It is practically and legally not possible. It seems to be part of the self-propaganda by Israelis.
Then: Compensation for murdered, to ship owners for damages, return of all personal and private belongings, including the stolen videos, and arrest and punishment of the murderers and their handlers. Then we can talk.
New Policy: Beginning with the Lebanese flotilla, ships that attempt to illegally run the blockade (a violation of international law), will be confiscated or sunk. If confiscated, passengers will be detained until claimed by their governments, legal cargo will be offered to Gaza, ships will be sold at auction to cover costs. Next Policy: If the new policy is not a sufficient deterrent, Israel will be forced to remove the Gaza port facilities from the air.
The fish in the sea would have made good use of them.
They give back the ships that were used to harass Israel on the "promise" that they won't be used again. Israel should have sunk them or sold them to show that those who try to attack Israel don't get all of their equipment back. Why doesn't israel send the Hamas all their Qassam rocket metal that they shoot into Sderot? Maybe give back all the metal bullet fragments and bomb remains too? No wonder Israel is the doormat of the entire region.
No promise, that the ships won't be used again, has been given Israel by Turkish government.
1) The flotilla ships are the instruments of the crime against Israel and as such are contraband. Take them out to the international limit and sink them to make artificial reefs out of them. This will provide a food source for Israeli fishermen and punish the ship owners for being parties to a crime against Israel by letting their ships be used in that crime of blockade-running. 2) Crimes against humanity: What is this? The Spaniard have selective memory. They have conveniently forgotten the Inquistion against the Jews and others who refused the Roman Catholic Religion? Cast out the beam from your own eye before you try to remove the speck from my eye! Obadiah 1:15.
Israel stopped that flotilla. The next one ported in Egypt. Israel has mad its point and won the issue. The three docked ships take up space and cost money to maintain. Turkey will pay for its tugs, sailing from Turkey, to fetch the grounded vessels. Turkey talks, sputters and demands but gains nothing except to make itself an international fool. Let Turkey tug its garbage back home. Game over.
1. World is now aware of and focused on the cruelty of Israel's illegal blockade. 2. Israel has lost many friends and is being further isolated politically and culturally. 3. Israel was forced to greatly expand what they allow into Gaza. 4. Israel was forced to agree to a Libyan rebuilding effort in Gaza 5. Despite all the chest-pounding about arresting and imprisoning, seizing ships, etc., Israel was forced to release everyone and the ships too 6. Egypt has now opened its crossing into Gaza 7. Israel is now being investigated by the UN Yes, a spectacular victory for Israel!
should have their day in court and Isralis are not above reproche and judicial review...
Spanish peace activists and a journalist claim to be lightly tortured what the hell is that and they claim we committed crimes against humanity!! Spain is the most anti semitic country in Europe but that is not a crime!! Spain cannot even deal with the Franco era nor does Spain give a damn about the Wester Sahara being occupied by Marocco and being plundered!! Yes this is Spain telling us we are bad people!! Well tough luck we know better Spain does not even know how to deal with its own people and certainly as the most anti semitic people should first learn not to hate Jews!!
Does that justify Israeli crimes?
Gazans are free to board the ship and to sail to Turkey
... for kidnapping (in international waters); theft (of personal property, cameras); deprivation of freedom (for illegal detention); brutality and pain inflicted; psychological hurt! Go ahead! But they will just laugh it off... Because THEY run the show!
Spanish protester going to sue eh? Well let see how this plays out. What did he or shee think would happen when these ships of fools set sail to break a blockade. Did they thing they would be greeted with open arms and troops singing Koombaya. Of course they were arested and deported. If they dont like teh treatment, dont get on board. What idiots og boo hoo. As for returning the ships. never. A bad decision Sell them for scrap to pay for the cost of teh raids. Proceeds of crime . Giving these ships back is not a good thing. They will only come back again and again. At mimumin a huge fine should be levied and berthing fees charged
They were arrested and dragged there from international waters, only to be deported after being manhandled and/or beaten by the Israeli authorities. The ships do not belong to Israel, as as much as you like stealing things, they should be returned without conditions. As has been pointed out here, the ships do not belong to the Turkish government, so they are not at liberty to make any guarantees.
As for holding them, if nothing was found on them and they had not entered the blockade area, on what grounds, apart from demanding what Israel cannot legally demand, which amounts to piracy.
....and add them over to the glorious Israeli navy. Or, turn them into luxury liners for tourists to Israel, with the profits going to Jewish charities. You can go to hell Turkey.
They may be setting the ships free, but how about the deep scars left behind after the raid that sparked international outcry and escalated tensions with Turkey. Israel must eventually meet Turkey's demand to apologize for the horrible raid and compensate the families of the victims
First of all Israel has no right to the ships (or other property) it has taken. Secondly Turkey does not own the vessels so it can not and should not guarantee what the vessels will or will not be used for.
finally Isreal take a positve step. Isreal can not survive without turkey freinship... weather u like or not its a reality. turkey became the power of the region and Isreal must must careful when turkey is on the line.
Turkey isn't a regional power at all and they are in the process of being sidlined just like Iran for their insane actions like supporting Hamas and Hezbullah. Maybe now people won't ignore how they massacre Kurds or admit their genocide of Armenians or their ongoing conflict with Greece. No one needs Turkey.
Sorry to disappoint you. Israel can survive very well without the Turkish "friendship". Slightly more difficult, but we have lived through much harder times than loosing this "friendship". So what? I will not spend my vacation in Antalia...and you will go your way, which isn't ours for sure.
Anyway they were like a grenade for a new crisis in Israel's hand. For the meanwhile, Turkish public opinion forgot the ships and when they come to the agenda it would be a new headache. On the other hand, a sick minded mayor in Israel had asked for permission to convert mavi marmara in to a hotel a few weeks ago. (So Israelis would stay in the bloody rooms. What a shame.) They will lose their toys to have fun with dead people.
...all the cameras and video recording equipment they stole from the passengers, so we'd have the truth rather than the IDF "Director's Cut" of what went on. And how about an independent investigation, instead of asking the perpetrator to run his own trial?
It is rather difficult to understand the Turkish impudence. They sent a group of criminals on board of a terror ship under a disguise of "help Gaza", and now they are complaining about "stealing recording equipment"? it has been said that those who live in glass houses should not cast stones.
Never heard that the IHH is going to run its own investigation or its own trial. What about the Turkish government? Does it plan to investigate it's own involvement in the "freedom"-flotilla? Looks like there will be no investigation or so run by the perpetrators. An independent investigation would be nice.
I hope that that guarantee was not given. As a Turkish citizen I believe that Turkish government is not in a place to decide instead of a Turkish NGO.
They apparently asked, but a non response told them everything they needed to hear...
It is really nice to hear that, thanks Hakan.
... clearly, we are plain off-our-heads... ... clamouring to be accapted for-what-we-are... ...what else are we going to hear?
is to make it perfectly clear that all vessels and equipment used in these illegal operations will be confiscated. Apart from moral considerations these vessels could be sold - and the proceeds would contribute to the cost of policing the blockade. As for "guarantees" - we have seen that all guarantees regarding Arab or Palestinan (and now - by extention ) Turkish implementation are totally worthless. What - exactly - will happen if the guarantees are not honoured? Weakness Weakness Weakness yet again - it will be our downfall!
