Israel launched air strikes in the Gaza Strip overnight Tuesday after Palestinian militants fired a rocket and mortar shells at the country, Palestinian officials and the Israeli military said on Wednesday.

Palestinian Authority sources said that 22 Gazans were wounded in the attack.

Palestinian medical officials said about a dozen people were slightly wounded by debris from the air strikes.

The air strikes came after the Israeli military reported that Palestinian militants on Tuesday had blown up a donkey cart filled with dynamite near the concrete wall that separates Gaza from Israel and fired several mortar rounds into Israel.

No Israelis were injured.

A Palestinian militant group that identifies with al-Qaida claimed responsibility for firing the rocket and mortar shells at Israel from Gaza, which is ruled by the Islamist Hamas movement.

Hamas security sources said the Israeli air strikes hit an airport in the southern Gaza Strip which is not in use and a Hamas training camp in the north.

An Israeli military spokesman said the air strikes were a response to the cross-border attacks from Gaza and that warplanes had targeted tunnels used by militants.

Hamas, which seized the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007, says it has reached an understanding with other militant groups to halt rocket fire.

But smaller groups have carried on firing at Israel.

Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for any attacks carried out from the coastal territory.

Why, every time Israel strikes in reprisals the HAMAS in Gaza, you always show the same spectacular photo taken during the operation of January, 2009. You deliberately choose this photo which is only increasing the hatred of the Israel while every new strike of Israeli is only answering a sending of rocket or a firing of mortar of the Islamists of Gaza. I never read no line in your newspaper which condemns the barbaric and cruel use of animals innocent as during this attempt on the border of Gaza or when the Islamists use children or other civilians as human shield to avoid that TSAHAL strikes Arabic positions.

Especially, when one considers how Israel is fueling Palestinian resistance with its illegal presence in the Palestinian territories and along the border of Gaza in violation of international law...Make no mistake about it --Israelis are the bad guys there...

I read somewhere else, that the cart was filled with approx. 250 kgs of dynamite. Next time, instead of smuggling these amounts of dynamite (and much more, I guess), try to smuggle in some food for your "hungry" people...

The IDF apparently told Maan that the attack was partly in response to a mortar attack that could only have been made with the new super howitzer mortar that not even the US has that can hit Ashkelon from Gaza. And the injuries Maan are reporting include some in critical condition, not just the slight injuries that IDF told Haaretz about. And the IDF told Maan about the mosque nearly destroyed that apparently was so insignificant to the IDF that it didn't think it was worth mentioning to the Israeli press.
