Israel approves 500 new homes in West Bank settlements in response to Itamar attack

Ministerial committee on settlements with participation of Netanyahu and Barak approves further settlement building as response to the fatal stabbing in West Bank settlement in which family of five were slain.

By Barak Ravid Tags: Israel news Israel settlements West Bank

The ministerial committee on settlement affairs decided Saturday night to approve the construction of hundreds of housing units in several West Bank settlements, a move that came in response to a deadly attack on a family of five in the settlement of Itamar on Friday.

The approval of further settlement building follows several long months wherein no construction was approved. The move involves measured construction of several hundred housing units within settlement blocs.

Some 500 housing units are due for construction in the settlements of Gush Etzion, Ma'ale Adumim, Ariel, and Kiryat Sefer.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak took part in the meeting on Saturday night. During the discussion, several alternatives to further settlement building were discussed, such as starting a new settlement, or widening the settlement of Itamar but the end the decision, supported by Barak, was to continue construction in settlement blocs.

The Fogel family was killed Friday night when a suspected terrorist broke into their home in the West Bank settlement of Itamar and stabbed them all to death.

The prime minister's office notified the White House on Saturday night of Israel's intention to approve new settlement construction. A government official said that this was a strategic decision to build in settlements that will remain in Israel's control in any possible peace agreement with the Palestinians.

    Israel kills children too.......but ...

Lest be crystal clear aboutr that. 1) When the IDF attack Hammas outposts because of their dirty activity of launching rockets against Israel, lots of innocent people are killed. The equation is clear. Israel attacks terrorists who in order to defend themselves in a most cowardly manner hide themsleves in populous areas. In other words, the palestinian chlidren killed by Israel are the result of Hammas tactics not of Israel's intention. 2) In the attack on Itamar, the palestinian criminals went directly to kill innofensive chlidren. The criminal act itself was done in the classical style of islamic ritual murder: Slaughtering. The same style was done againts Theo Van Ghog in Amsterdam. The conlcusions are crystal clear: a) These barabaric islamists sacrifice their chlidren in order to use them as human shields against Israel deffensive war. b) They killed Jewish children in the most fanatic type of slaughtering. That is the Islamic way. How to deal with them? Fight them, never accept their terms and probably even a good way to deterr them is by settling in their neighborhoods. Always challenging them,. never giving up. Even those that are in favor of a two state solution, must reflect again. The only response is challenging them. In Europe the response provided by liberals as Merkel Sarkozy or Cameron is shifting from multiculturalism to nationalism. That is the proper answer against Ilamic challnege. In the Middle East resistance is manifested in supporting Israel. Sooner or later most of Western democracies will shift to the right and understand that at this moment Israel is the only barrier against islamization. Indeed Bernard Lewis was right. Sad to admit it, but that is the true.

Just make sure that the IDF secures every "settlement" in the the future! So people can sleep without the risk of being ambushed doing so! Why only build 500 new homes? Let the pals know that for every rocket 100 homes will be built. And for every attack on a Jew 1000 homes will be built. Then its up to the pals if they want any land left!

As an act of pure, unadulterated cynicism this really does take Israel to new heights (or, more accurately, to a new low). Good test of the rest of the world's patience with Israel's settlement addiction though.....

As smart as US attacking Iraq after 911. Sure, even people of US accuse the government of staging the terror attack, and sure, all the sympathy from 911 is long lost, and hundreds of thousands have died because of it, but US has greatly benefited from the decision. Good move Israel. Now you will be accused of killing your own settlers, just to be able to settle even more, but hey, you get to settle. besides who cares about PR, right? Since you are incapable of simulating your own moves, let me tell you what will happen. you will anger all the politicians in the world that have accused you of not wanting peace, no one else will condemn the attack, just not to encourage you to build even more (why stop at 500? why not 500.000? sure, next time.) , you will provoke the terrorists to the level that they will want to kill many more, just to scare the settlers away, and the sympathy you received from the attack? it's already lost. and you will see a lot of comments everywhere claiming that lieberman himself arranged the attack. but you get to have 500 new homes. yay.

    • 10:10

Based on his political views and goals. With the recent violence between settlers and Palestinians, culminating in the despicable murders yesterday tension is already high. So, what does Bibi do? No you're wrong! He doesn't do anything to calm the tension, instead he decides to make it even worse. The settlement expansion is sure to cause even more friction. This makes you wonder: who wants a third intifada? I think we all know, the expansionists do. Palestinian violence gives Israel an excuse for using heavy-handed violence against Palestinians and for continued settlement construction. It is fringe groups on both sides that want and cause the bloody altercations between Jews and Palestinians. One on side we have a terrorists like Hamas that get more supporters for their cause and more volunteers. And on the other we have the settlers who want the IDF to drive out the Palestinians and for the settlements to expand. It's tragic that normal people of both the peoples are stuck in between these groups. Every day people bleed because of the extremists on both sides.

A few weeks ago a rocket just missed a wedding in a synogague 15 km from gaza border. If there is a peace process hamas and islamic jihad ups the attacks just like they did in september when abbas and bibi were talking. Abbas wants to leave hamas now in power. First stop the weapons flow from iran, get control of the border and stop the rocket attack and then talk about a state. But to do so before hand is a joke.

But I'll point out that Sharon did agreed that Israel would freeze all settlement activity including "natural growth". Signed by The Big Man and ratified by the Knesset, and so that vastly outweights your claim that Arafat gave a nod and a wink and a nudge, nudge.

Tel-aviv is a settlmant, so is chaifa, ashdod, jerusalem, and any city in israel. a settlmant is any place jews build in the land of their fathers. the palastinians have been livving in Israel for the past 100 years after being thrown out from many countries they terrorised too a hundred years ago. israel agreed the palastineans could stay. in turn- the palas. decided to start calling jewish cities "illeagal settlmants" and thru terror- are trying to achieve land for them selves. not one palast. ever lived anywhere near Itamar- but they claim it is theirs. israels answer is- "you're willing to murder for land- were willing to be murdered for the land of israel". so israel builds homes in retaliation. america- when under atack- destroys afghanistan, iraq iran- all becaus 21 "poor terrorist" chose to kill. america killed ten of thousend in retaliation. israel builds 500 homes. can you comprehend the specialness of these jewish people?

Killing children is condemned but Bibi is going nuts and Israel should wake up rather than go to a prolonged self denial episode. There's a problem called the settlers and settlements and it should be solved with an agreement with the Palestinians.

It seems the only side benefiting from this tragedy is Israel's rightist government of Netanyahu...

because they had to stop building settlements before due to international pressure and now they can build. This poses the question as to whether Netanyahu's government knew of the planned attack and allowed it to happen to make an international issue and tragedy out of it as an excuse to continue building and stall the peace process instead of the appropraite response of apprehending the perpetrators.

Very strange act by the Israeli gov't. The idea must be that Israel has "sympathy" now that it can milk. Patience in the international community for Israeli manipulativeness is running thin. It will be interesting to see how press coverage of this develops.

does not mean authorising further violation of the law. have they lost their mind? those settlers are going to get kicked out by a foreign army eventually, this is all that will happen with that sort of attitude. no decolonisation, building more will lead to this as noone will trust israel to clean up their own mess anymore. as soon as a majority recognizes palestine, it will action some tasks for israel to do within a deadlind. if not done, it will be reinforced by miliraty back up. we all know how it happens but Netanyahu pretends not to understand and prefer to focus on electoral agenda. this further violation is pathetic and foolish.
