An Israel Defense Forces tank shell killed a Palestinian militant from the Islamic Jihad movement in the northern Gaza Strip on Wednesday near the Israeli border, Palestinian medical workers said.

A second person nearby was wounded, they said. Islamic Jihad said the man was killed was on a "Jihadist mission", an attack aimed at Israel.

An IDF spokeswoman confirmed that a tank fired a shell at "two Palestinian suspects who approached the security fence" and that it hit its target.

Islamic Jihad has been behind numerous rocket attacks aimed at southern Israel from the Gaza Strip, territory controlled by the Hamas Islamist group.
