Iran vows 'crushing response' if attacked by Israel or U.S.

U.S. has plan in case attack on Iran needed, says army chief; Iran envoy to UN: We'll set Tel Aviv ablaze if Israel strikes us.

Iran vowed Sunday that it would deliver a "crushing response" to Israel and the United States should either attempt to attack the Islamic Republic over its contentious nuclear program.

The remarks made by a top commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) came just hours after the U.S. army chief told media that a plan was in the works should an attack become necessary.

"Security in the Persian Gulf region for all, or for none," Iran's IRNA news agency quoted Deputy IRGC Commander for Political Affairs Brigadier General Yadollah Javani as saying.

"The Persian Gulf is a strategic region." he added. "If security in this region is jeopardized, they will suffer, too, and our response will be firm.

Turning his attention to Israel, Javani said that Iran did not believe its enemy capable of attacking. Nonetheless, he said, Iran would be prepared in case that equation should change. "Iran never ignores its enemies. Hence, we have been increasing our defense and deterrence capabilities."

"Iran will give a crushing response to its enemies," he added.

U.S. has plan in case attack on Iran needed, says army chief

Earlier Sunday, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said Sunday that the U.S. military has a plan to attack Iran if necessary, but clarified that he considered such a strike to be a bad idea.

Mullen, the highest-ranking U.S. military officer, has often warned that a military strike on Iran over its contentious nuclear program would have serious and unpredictable ripple effects around the Middle East. At the same time, he has called the risk of Iran developing a nuclear weapon unacceptable.

Mullen would not say which risk he thinks is worse, but told NBC television's Meet The Press that a military strike remains an option if need be. Should come to that, Mullen added, the military has a plan at hand. He did not elaborate.

Both the U.S. and Israel have declared that the option of attacking the Islamic Republic must remain on the table.

Also Sunday, Iran's envoy to the United Nations warned that the Islamic Republic would set Tel Aviv ablaze if Israel dares attack it.

"If the Zionist regime commits the slightest aggression against Iranian soil, we will set the entire war front and Tel Aviv on fire," Mohammad Khazai said, Kashmar, the Farhang-e Ashti daily reported.

Last month, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said world leaders "believe absolutely" that Israel may decide to take military action against Iran to prevent the latter from acquiring nuclear weapons.

“Iran is not guaranteeing a peaceful production of nuclear power [so] the members of the G-8 are worried and believe absolutely that Israel will probably react preemptively,” Berlusconi told reporters following talks with other Group of Eight leaders.

Iranian military officials said last week that the United States and Israel would not dare attempt a military strike of Iran's nuclear sites, adding that they were confident that Tehran would easily repel such an attempt.

The United States, the United Nations and the European Union have each imposed new restrictions on Iran over its nuclear enrichment activities.

where is the JDL in the wars America is presently fighting. We are in these horrific struggles basically because of the USA's government support of Israel. We have a coalition made up of military forces from countries all over the world. I have yet to see any reports that the JDL has fought and died in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Now Israel wants us to go to war against Iran. Where is the JDL? Are they only a modern powerful army against bottled-up Hamas and rock-throwing Palestinians? It seems that way, as they had their sixes handed to them the last time they strolled into Lebannon.

shiites-islamic iran is the greatest danger to the sunnites-islamic-arab countries. both have the ambitions and the power to dominate the islamic world. both are in deadly conflict with each other since the death of mohammed. shiites iran is the weakest side & the most fanatic among the two segments of the islamic faith and because of its weakness iran needs to be more fanatic & dangerous. changing the regime in iran can either be from inside the country and that can be very difficult as it was the situation with iraq under saddam or with the help and active participation with the sunnites arab countries that have great interest in seeing iran out of the way in the islamic world. attacking the regime in fanatic iran can be very dangerous and a most difficult operation. the war of saddam with iran is a prove an example to that.

Why does not anybody mention about Saudi Arabia's regime that is ruled by Islamic law (the Shari'a)? Because it bows to Amercian Imperialism and lets American oil companies suck its oil. When Iran defies this American Imperialism, Iran's regime is seen as evil. Also Israel is being ruled by religion. Israel's regime should be seen as evil too.

    • 02.08.10
    • 10:29

Mr. Berlusconi is mistaken, and one only has to tap into the UNITED NATIONS fully recorded (Mr. Ahmadinejad) speech the last time he was here. His speech made perfect sense and was so offensive to America that they walked out. America was extremely embarrassed because they had no recourse or acceptable argument. Ahmadinejad is against nuclear weapons and he eloquently defended his position against them as evil. He really made America, Israel and the rest of the world look like emotionally disturbed retards. He has better things to do and the foolishness of Iran using nuclear weapons (even if he had them) is absurd. It was like Saddam Hussein and his explosive rhetoric towards America. Admiral Mullen is another incompetent retard, and the only thing that is "unacceptable " is loosing trillions of American dollars in a fantasy war of terrorism, making America more unsafe and vulnerable to attack, increasing terrorist activity throughout the world and NOT FINDING OSAMA BIN LADEN, (who still enjoys taunting America with his most excellent videos).

Some reporter asks about contingency plans and get a stock answer. The US has plans for every imaginable contingency. Even for unimaginable ones. The Pentagon has plans for an invasion from Mars, probably. For the US to attack Iran would require that Obama Zee-out or an act of Congress. An act of Congress would require Republican vote and they won't vote for anything that costs a single dime unless it is to be spent on their corporate buddies. Congress hasn't voted for a war since 1941. So some reporter ask a question, Iran over-reacts and half the Israeli press goes into the zone. There is no story. Everybody raise their hands if they think Obama is going to attack out of the blue. Every else raise their hands if they think the US Congress is going to vote to declare war on Iran.

It seems clear that: - bombing Iranian nuclear facilities will make the American efforts even harder in Iraq , Afganistan, and Pakistan. - If there is bombing to be done, the US will do it. The US can survive any amount of diplomatic protest. - Mullen is repeating the conclusion of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in about 2006 when President Bush asked the US Air Force to bomb Iran: bombewrs will get some, but not all Iranian bomb labs. Bombing will miss some and only damage others. US troops -- our "grunts" will have to go in and clean up after the bombers. - That will be a mess (a "balagan"?) beyond anything readers can imagine. The weapons sites are scattered around a big country. The US has already deployed every Regular Army division at least three times; every Guard/Reserve unit once; every Marine Corps brigade several times. We've been at war -- two wars -- since mid-2002. - When I visited Israel in May, I was surprised that hardly any Israelis had a sense of the people and money -- the "blood and treasure" -- the US has lost in fighting Iraq and Afghanistan.

Arrow is designed to kill missiles Sunburn is designed to shoot down to sink ships not set Tel Aviv ablaze. Iran would also need to be suicidal to try and use any of those things against a US battle group. Assuming the US did decide to bomb Irans nuclear site they would probably chose specific targets for pinpoint accuracy. Sink or try to sink a ship then it becomes a different matter and the US won't be taking such a gentle approach the entire Iranian military machine and probably parts of Theran will be smashed. They can take the US by surprise once. Remeber the US has right now 3-4 carrier groups in the Gulf that alone is hundreds of planes, it has airbases It also if it decided to be nice to Israel for once has Israel which has bee described before as a permanent aircraft carrier. The US not only has hundreds of planes on Irans front door but they have Tomohawk cruise missiles. The Americans don't like it when their ships sink so Iran should beware.

Poor Iran, I almost feel sorry for it. When a country knows that it has no military response to a threat against it, what it does is try to use bluster to keep up its spirits. Iran is extremely weak. This is the country that fought for eight years against Iraq, the same Iraq that the U.S. defeated in a matter of weeks. After years of sanctions and a corrupt Islamic fascist dictatorship, Iran is even weaker now. With a missile shield to protect it, Israel will very quickly cripple Iran. I almost feel sorry for Iran, but not quite. After the destruction, I look forward to the people of Iran tearing apart Ahmadinijad and his fascist cronies and once again joining the family of nations.

The fascist Islamic dictatorship of Iran, which sponsors every terrorist sect in the Middle East except Al-Qaida, has had years to prepare the retaliation. It will be ferocious, terrorist, unscrupulous and devastating to Israel and to the U.S. by unconventional means, inflaming both Hamas and Hezballah against Israel in ways never yet seen before. Hezbollah will be bombing any Jewish kindergarden in Latin America, and make mashed potatoes out of any American institution abroad or even inside the USA. The only one to blame is Israel. Why? Because its the only state in the ME that owns nuclear weapons which therefore makes it a threat for everyone in the region. When Iran has plans to whatever kind of nuclear power, Israel must be the last one to complain. If Israel is to be stripped of its nuclear power, no one in the region would say a word about it. So since Israel owns a nuclear power, it would be fair and also common sense, that others would aspire for the same power. So a nuclear Israel is the absolute reason for any potential war in the ME which also makes us think that its also Israel that is causing troubles with its neighbors. About the war, if it happened, I think Israel will lose, perhaps not the war, but a lot. I think it needs to "rebuild Tel Aviv" again (Iranians are no Arabs) which is something they can't afford and I am also suspicious about the willingness of Israelis to remain living there, that I dare say, is a big threat for Israel. The Me has proven to be a region that is always in tension, I think such war can happen at any time, but Israel and the US are just doing some mathematics and estimations about the loses which I think in any case would be really harmful to Israel. The other option, if Israel wants peace, it should be forced to get rid of its nukes so that peace prevails and people avoid wars!

Pakistan will assist all Arab states in their quest for nukes. But Bibi's obsession to play sheriff against Iran will boomerang. U.S. may hit Iran. Iran will then set Tel Aviv ablaze and paralyze the country. Syria and Hizbollah will retake Golan plus more towns, etc. in the north as preplanned. Hamas too will attack. Israel will take to the skies only to be told to go back because it's interfering with American airspace and if not its planes may be shot down by the USAF like Brzezinski declared back then "uss liberty in reverse". And even if Israel attacked Syria, then Egypt is foresworn by Mubarak to step in to fight Israel and Erdogan's Turkey won't sit still either. Catch 22 situation for Israel, damned if they do and damned if they don't. Bibi's willing to take risks by surrendering territories to Abbas but the risk of forcibly overrunning same territories by above Arab/Muslim counries looks more like it.

Israel can't even threaten Iran let alone launch a strike without the full backing of the US. You conned a dumb president and a willing media and a stupid public (including me) into the Iraq mess. Attacking Iran is crazy talk. There is a real opposition that needs our help to overthrow the theocratic Ayatollah regime. Is Israel willing to go "all in" on this issue? Destroying Iran's nuclear facilities would be sweet but would cost us all if the strike failed. Peace is what we want. Honorable countries do not carry out preemptive strikes after stoking public support with false threats. The elections in November may get the party of "no" to call for "yes" in the war against any blowhard threating our blood brother. Israel has never been able to finish off any war. Cease fires and bs have prevented the vaunted IDF from conquering all of the Middle East. Now is your chance. Take on Iran in a fair fight with no interference from any outsider. You don't even have to consult with Mike Mullen. Israel should be given a chance to take on Iran in a cage match.

The claim that the only change is a new balance of power in the ME is wrong. It is based on an analysis made by by Western minds. In the eyes of radical Islam the analysis is different. The current leadership in Iran, may have in the near future the opportunity to reach historical recognition in the Islamic world, comparable to Salah ad Din or more. Even in the event of millions of Iranians dying in retaliations, the elite will be in a safe place, and the Islamic people of Iran will accept the price after seeing their achievement, and be proud of their new status in the Islamic world. They already lost millions in the war with Iraq. A prevention war will certainly result in tens of thousand of rockets falling upon Israel sent by Hizballa and Hamas, dwarfing what happened in the last Lebanon war. Nevertheless, it it a smaller price than what Iran is planning for our future.

Want to bet that they know what we have, where it is stored and to what extent our storage sites are hardened? Much better off to wait them out, let them get some sort of nuclear device, then, and only then, go after them with our own nuclear devices and turn Iran into an atomic wasteland for the next 100 years. But, please,. nothing will happen and the usa will not attack Iran first.. Why stick our necks out for them?

The US has backed horrible dictators and corrupt regimes since I have been able to read. Israel is a zionofachist regime but favorible to Hamas or Hezbollah. The scourge of Muhammed is the enemy and we need to face both at home and worldwide. If Syria and Iran want to live in peace they should say so and stop with the inflammatory speeches.

I was once on a plane, with a famous Texan pastor sitting beside me. During our discussion, he ironically mentioned his appreciation for Christopher Hitchens, and his book "God is not Great". I'm sure you can discern why. Then, somehow, the topic of Iran acquiring WMDs came up, and he was adamant that the US should prevent the Iranians from pursuing nuclear proliferation. When I asked about the hypocrisy of such a concept, he gave me the example, thus: It's like the reason why we don't issue a driver's license to 5 year-olds, like we do to 18 year-olds... 5 year-olds are not "responsible" with them. I defer that statement to your judgement.

      • Meyer

      • 05:14

What wars has Israel started? From the day it was born it was under siege by its Arab neighbors. 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1982, 1987, 2000, 2006, 2008. Each of these conflicts Israel has been involved in was preceded by prolonged and increasingly intense provocations, or outright acts of war such as closing the Straits of Tiran to Israeli export and import activities, or expelling UN monitors from the Sinai while massing 12 tank divisions on the border in preparation for an invasion. Israel has no more committed crimes against humanity than Hamas has given up its quest to kill the Jews. Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran threaten to bomb Israeli cities. Launch rockets into civilian areas. Kidnap Israeli citizens (Gilad Shalit). It is irrelevant that he is a soldier because Hamas is a terrorist group, not a government of an internationally recognized state. That means they have committed a crime, not taken a POW. So tell me in detail, what wars has Israel started, and what crimes against humanity has Israeli committed?

It began when the US took over defense of British bases scattered around the world, allowing GB to pull troops home to block an invasion. It continued through FDR's "all measures short of war" as the US switched from building cars to building tanks and airplanes.
