Iran official: We have obtained the S-300 missile system

Fars news agency says Tehran signs deal with Belarus after Russia reportedly refused to provide Iran with the surface-to-air system over recent UN sanctions.

By The Associated Press and Haaretz Service

A semiofficial Iranian news agency says Iran has obtained four S-300 surface-to-air missiles despite Russia's refusal to deliver them.

The Fars news agency said Wednesday that Iran has obtained two missiles from Belarus and two others from another unspecified source.

Russia signed a contract in 2007 to sell the missiles to Iran but said in June that new UN Security Council sanctions against Tehran prevent delivery. The sale would have substantially boosted the country's defense capacities, raising Israeli fears it would tip the military balance in the Middle East.

In June, a senior Iranian official said that that if Russia persisted in its refusal "to deliver the systems, we are well capable of producing missile defense systems that are very much similar to Russia's S-300 apparatus."

Since the recently approved UN sanctions resolution against Iran, Russia has released several contradicting reports regarding it missile deal with Iran.

The senior Iranian official added that if Russia eventually refused "to deliver the systems, we are well capable of producing missile defense systems that are very much similar to Russia's S-300 apparatus."

Since the UN sanctions resolution against Iran was approved last Wednesday, Russia has released several contradicting reports regarding it missle deal with Iran. Russia said on Thursday it was in discussions with Iran on possible new nuclear power plants in the Islamic state, the country's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters

Israel and the United States have asked Russia not to deliver the missile systems, which can shoot down several aircraft or missiles simultaneously and could potentially be used to protect nuclear facilities.

Western diplomats in Moscow believe Russia is eager to keep the deal in reserve as a bargaining chip. Iran has expressed increasing frustration over the unfulfilled contract.

Iran has its nuclear installations well guarded and are scattered around the country some of which are deep under ground. An attack will occur eventually but its success will be similar to the sanctions imposed upon Iran. Frutless.

The missiles are defensive, can't attack Israel with those. Most likely had them all along. China has quite few S-300s that it could lend to it's Gas station(Iran). Wonder if Iran received any special delivery purchases from the Republic of North Korea. Nukes delivered by submarine, would be quite an investment.

If this stuff is obsolete and Iran is intent on buying some such system it's probably best that they buy this obsolete junk instead of something good. Israel and the west probably know how to get around this system and defend against it.

These are Russian made and currently the best in the world outside of Russia (S-500 not exported). Russia send a lot of time and money upgrading these systems to make them the best, the US decided to focus on offensive systems like the F-22 and F-35. Iran is also buying older Chinese S-300s to upgrade to newer specs. with help of Russian/N. Korean scientist/techs.

Why are we focusing on the Great Oz while paying no attention to the man in the booth running ALL of the bells and whistles? Ahmadinejad is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the SUPREME Leader's designations. The man has zero power to control the army and police in the face of the Supreme Leader's decisions. He cannot, indeed, attack Israel on his command. Not even by the Constitution of Iran, available for everyone to read (in English). So while you publish stories daily to demonize this monkey: "Ahmadinejad threatens Paul the Octopus" "Mahmoud steals candy from babies" "Mahmoud kicks wife's pet kitten" "Ahmadinejad spits in your Cheerios", remember that he's not even the real power-broker in Iran.

If we know anything about modern day Israel, it is that they hate elements of risk, even though they be slight. If this were not true, Hizbollah would have been eradicated long ago, and Hamas would suffer daily setbacks. As it is, Israel suffered only about 120 IDF casualties in the 2006 war and was ready to call it quits even though they had achieved none of their objectives. Any war calling for the invasion of Lebanon or the bombing of Iran will insure that Israel takes a lot more casualties than that. A lot more.

    • Mark Lincoln
    • 04.08.10
    • 15:25

The specific version, the S-300 PT, was the original version. It uses the antiquated Tin Shield surviellance radar, Flap Lid fire control system, and often a Clam Shell low altitude radar. The PT version is of limited mobility, and reloads are often prevented by the hot launch damaging the TEL. The SA-10 missile is NOT a long-range system. Belarus has been replacing it's S-300 PT and S-300V systems with the PS model. The claim by Iran is for an obsolete version not the S-300 PMU which Russia was to have delivered. US and Israeli pilots have been training against the much more capable S-300 PMU in Red Flag exercises for years. Perspective folks. This is not a game changing development.

Russia, Belarus, they're only interested in the money. I'm guessing that they don't care who buys their stuff from them so long as someone does. So what you do it YOU BUY IT. Yes, that'll cost a few shekels but it's cheaper than fighting and war. Then, if you don't need it you might resell it or parts of it. This could be a good investment.

Well, signing a deal doesn´t in any way mean, they actually got those missiles already via Belarus or Azerbaijan. It might as well be questioned, if the S-300 would seriously increase their defense capability or could turn into a trojan horse: As it is generally accepted that Israel views those missiles as a strategic game changer there would be less fallout from the IDF taking them out than there would be from an allout air-strike. Iran would have to respond though in a way that could easily trigger an open war - leading to the destruction of its nuclear arms capacity. With Iran at least in great part responsible for the escalation this would be one of the smoother "armed conflict entry scenarios".

Iran recieving delivery of the S-300 from Belarus will pobably spur the Russians to fulfill their contract, as otherwise Russia is actually starting to lose money and control over the system if Iran is successfully sourcing them elsewhere. And obviously the fact Iran has obtained this weapons system means that the idea of flying slow moving helicopters in Iranian airspace over their nuclear sites has just become a no brainer.

It is normal in official sales of advanced arms that the buyer commits not to transfer or re-sell the systems to another party, for otherwise the seller loses control and the arms might reach an adversary. Belarus is close to Russia politically, and even depends on it in many ways. It is simply unthinkable that they would have transferred the missiles to Iran without Russian authorization. So here is how it worked: The Russians had a contract to sell the S-300 to Iran. They were pressured by the West not to deliver (even though this system is not included in the UN sanctions). For not delivering, the Russians were going to obtain some benefits from the West. On the other hand, the Iranians are good clients and it was important to keep them happy. What do you do? The compromise: Russia secretly allows Belarus and one or two more very good friends to transfer a small number of batteries to Iran. The Iranians are appreciative enough and Russia still keeps the option to sell more if the West doesn't deliver benefits. Incidentally, the US under Reagan authorized Israel to sell US missiles to Iran in order to overcome Congressional sanctions...

Threats and sanction against Iran prevents new enegy investment, but now Iran gets 10 times more for the same oil comparing 10 years ago. Because that time, owing to economical prosperity of US, iran was getting 8 USD / barrel but now gets 80 USD/barrel, but pays less than twice for sanctioned itmes which at most compose 50 percent of Iranian imports. It means that with the tensions Iran gets at least 8 times more money than 10 years ago when MiddleEsat was calm!!!! Furthermore, with the high oil price, US and European countries have to buy their oil more expensive from every country. So they would be more weak to withstand Iran.

      • Julie
      • 04.08.10
      • 16:06

You see that after attacking to Iraq its price significantly increased, and the peak was when Boush threated to attack Iran.Just that time financial crisis was triggered by high energy price and Bi=ush canceled its plan. You can see why president obama resists any attack against Iran.Because Iran owns Hormoz Strait where 20 percent of world oil should passes from. It means that it can influences supply risk endlessly!! The other point is that Iran has second oil ( after Saudi) and Gas ( after Russia ) reserves of the world. It means that not investing in Iran, of the major supply source, would significantly decrease world energy supply and increase energy price, specially when emerging economies are consuming more and more. The last but not least important is that Nukes is not for using, nobody except US has never use it. Iran wants war for self deffence and in formal reports, US army commander also beleive it. The question is about bargaining power not real war. But inflaming war in Iran, practically burns middle East: there would be war in a region extended from Saudi Arabia to China. Then nobody is in immun of the consequences of such a war.

With a debt of 14 trillions $, a third war would have been lethal. But with a weak US, Israel has no chance to survive. Sanctions against Iran are a real blessing for China and Russia. This is definately good for Iran. With their indigeneous missile capability and with the S-300 in their hands they will have a more solid and viable defense every passing day. Surrounding Israel with enough missile fire power will bring them to their knees. Iran and its arab allies may not be fully there yet but their capacity is in fact growing rather than declining. Israel missed the opportunity to make peace in the early 90s when it was in a far more better strategic situation.

The report that Belarus has provided some outdated S300 SAM could well be fiction. Belarus, has many problems, even with Russia. Belarus will not isolate itself even further by said venture unless Tehran plans to bail out said country. That being the case, could well cause further friction in Russia's backyard. What does not make sense is that Tehran is forever making claims of either developing new advanced weapons or obtaining such weapons from unspecified sources. Unless the regime is truly afraid that by their actions, certain countries are about to take military measures against the theocratic and despotic regime FREEDOM FOR THE PEOPLE OF IRAN:. Good day.
