Speaking at a joint press conference with Lebanon FM, Mottaki slams UNIFIL performance, saying it was not able to deter 'Zionist regime's aggressions.'
By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel news Iran LebanonLebanon has a right to defend itself in the face of Israeli aggression, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said to the official ISNA news agency on Sunday, following a recent border clash between Lebanon and Israel which resulted in the death of two Lebanese soldiers, a Lebanese journalist and one Israel Defense Forces officer.

Last week, Israeli officer Dov Harari was killed during clashes between Israel and the Lebanese army along the border. The 45-year-old father of four from Netanya was a reserves battalion commander in the engineering corps. Another Israeli officer, Ezra Lakia, was seriously wounded in the same exchange of fire.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Lebanese Foreign Minister Ali al-Shami on Sunday, Mottaki said the "Lebanese nation and resistance have the right to end any aggression and pursue the issue through international circles to defend their rights."
The Iranian FM also condemned the performance of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), saying that "negligence and mistakes of these forces should not be disregarded."
"The forces are based in southern Lebanon to deter such aggressions, if UNIFIL is not able to deter the Zionist regime's aggressions, what is its duty in southern Lebanon? What is it doing along Lebanese and Palestinian borders?" Mottaki said.
Also speaking to ISNA at the joint press conference was Lebanese Foreign Minister al-Shami, who said that Israel did "not have the right to invade this region, the region is Lebanon's shared border."
The Iranian FM also commented on a rare Lebanon joint visit by Syrian President Bashar Assad and Saudi King Abdullah, underscoring the depth of Arab concern over the possibility that the potential indictment against Hezbollah members over the assassination of former Lebanon PM Rafik Harir would stir unwanted chaos.
Mottaki said that he viewed the joint meeting in a favorable light, adding that the "Islamic Republic of Iran's strategic policy seeks regional convergence and boosting regional cooperation."
"We regard regional convergence as a necessary element to strengthen bilateral and multilateral engagement and tackle enemies' conspiracies," Mottaki said.
On the subject of Iran's contentious nuclear program, the Lebanese foreign minister said he supported Iran's right to a peaceful nuclear program, adding that "the recent unfair Security Council resolution that tightened sanctions on Iran is another instance of double standards and we fully support Iran's legitimate right to civilian nuclear energy."
Jordanian Prime Minister Samir Rifai also reiterated on Sunday his country's support for Lebanon against Israeli "violations," during a meeting with Lebanese Information Minister Tarek Mitri, the official Petra news agency reported.
The report stated that Prime Minister Rifai "renewed Jordan's backing to the brethren in Lebanon as well as keenness on the unity and sovereignty of Lebanon, rejecting any violations of the Lebanese sovereignty and stressing the need for all parties to abide by the UN Security Council resolution 1705."

It has also right to reject such "help" from Iran.
Muslim regimes never admit wrong doing or condemn wrong doing even caught red handed. Despicable is typical.
... that there is any distinction between Lebanon Army, Hezbollah, and for that matter, Iran.

To begin, it's already been established for the past few days that Lebanon was responsible for the aggression at the border. Second, which is the best part by far, the second line of the article states, "IRAN" says Lebanon has the right to defend itself etc. LOL. IRAN says this. Look who's running the show now, and was always. BOO YAH
Didnt Lebanon shoot first? Typical of the arab countries to denounce Israel for simply defending itself.
Since when is cutting down a tree an act of aggression...Someone needs to remind the Lebanese and the Iranians that this works both ways. By this logic, if cutting down a tree warrants the targeted shooting of 2 Israeli soldiers - the next time that Lebanon feels the need to 'defend against Israeli aggression', Israel should defend themselves by all means possible and necessary and level Beruit and south Lebanon. But who said the Lebanese and Iranians are capable of logic...
Further proof of how much this regime hates Israel. Can you imagine them with nuclear weapons?
has the right to obliterate beirut when the terrorist population of lebanon fire one rocket at us.
Lebanon has a little to no air force. Will Jordan with its backing of lebanon sovereignty then use its air force aginst ISraeli fighter jets. Jordan will then find out just how good or not their equipment and pilots are
The Lebanese fired first, and the IDF troops have been confirmed as being on their own side of the border. So who has a right to defend itself from who?
israel is going to set the whole mid east on fire.the U.S needs to take the matches away from these pyro manics
this case is straight-forward. Israel does this every couple of weeks. Israel informed the UN. The UN informed Lebanon. The border fence is not the blue line. They did not shoot the soldier leaning over the fence, but a top official in a guard post 300 yards away. There were reporters on the scene beforehand, slightly suspicious if you ask me. So why is the UN so silent? They can difuse the entire situation by getting the facts out there and showing that Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and now Jordan are using this situation as propaganda and incitement to a regional conflict.
Now that Iran joins the chorus of condemnation against Israel's unwarranted aggression of a defenseless Israeli tree, what's next?
Black is white and white is black. Wow! You know how to tell when Mottaki is lying? His lips are moving.
Iran: "Get them UNIFIL out of southern Lebanon, where they only interfere with our sock puppet army that is otherwise known as Hizballah."
Lebanon was so lucky to have escaped the attack by Israel upon a tree in Israeli territory. The "brave" Lebanese army shot unsuspecting IDF soldiers clearing away a tree. Wow, such bravery on the part of the Lebanese. Typical of all Mustim "bravery", killing innocent women and children as they have for so many years. Now their army shoots from behind a wall. I am so impressed at their "bravery".
.... when you know IDF bombs civilians with phosphorous bombs !! Where have you been lately ?
Finally someone who agrees with Gideon Levy -- the Iranian Foreign Minister. Mr. Levy is now in truly good company.
Iran is right
israel was trimming trees on the Israeli side of the boarder and was shot at by LAF troops. since when is gardening considered aggressive? i have to moew my lawn latter i hope my neighbors dont think i am trying to invade their yard

because Lebanon already said, mea culpa. So Iran's reaction is absolutely comical.
Iran and Syria are using the Lebanese people as fools and the Lebanese should take back their country. Hairi was killed by Hizbollah, Iran and Syria because he was trying to get rid of them. the Lebanes people need to work with Israel so they can have a jprosperous country and not the horrific lives that th ebloated Arab dictatorships give to their people
I just dont get it. The Iranians and many Arabs are so good at ignoring the evidence, and fabricating their own to progress their agenda (s). Israel never crossed the blue line!
In this report and the reports published on Iranian Fars news site , he is clarifying some doubts. He is saying that altough the pressure is high on Iran, Iran and its allies would continue to be professional. They demand Israel treate Lebanon not as ex-colony to whom she had shown merci and any time could invade and occupy it again . So, it does not mean that any invasion would be started in their sides. In other resport on Fars news he asserts Iran still hopes to get some diplomatic agreement with US and does not want to start any violation to not ruin this strategy. Then he says that Iran would defend Syria and Lebanon should any attack happens. So, it means they are going to pay higher price for their proxies, in case of any Israeli attacks. ISo he says they are rational and at the momnet, everything about peice and war depends on Israel .
...regardless of the fact that we've just been unravelling what brought on the Lebanese aggression that killed outright a veteran revered officer of the IDF, and wounded another highly respected officer of ours... so whose "aggression" should we be dealing with now??
That their foreign minister is spending his time commenting on tree pruning activities. Welcome to the Middle East where even gardening is political.
Shouldn't Israel, the nation-state of the Jewish people, also have the right to defend itself, or is this right is deserved only for non-Jews...??
Only for peace loving Arabs..by the way its nice that lebanon shares a border with Palestine. Though I am not sure where that is.
