Iran and Lebanon top agenda as Barak meets UN chief
Ban Ki-moon voices hope that the Israeli-Palestinian proximity talks would begin 'shortly'.
By DPA Tags: Ehud Barak UN Israel newsUnited Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday voiced hope that the Israeli-Palestinian proximity talks would begin "shortly" during a meeting Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
Barak met with Ban at UN headquarters to go over the latest developments in the peace process after both Israel and the Palestinian Authority have agreed to hold the indirect talks on settling their conflict.
The UN said Ban also asked the Israeli government to let construction materials into the Gaza Strip, where the inhabitants are struggling to rebuild their lives after the brief Hamas-Israeli war in the winter of 2009. Israel has clamped down crossings between the two sides, which has severely hurt Palestinian economy and living conditions.
Ban and Barak "reviewed matters of mutual interest regarding the stability of the region, including Lebanon. Lastly, they exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue," the UN said.

Why do I believe number one on Ban's agenda was the siege. Oh well let's just go along with the headlines. You know, the type that proclaimed a building freeze in East Jerusalem.
... that his UNIFIL forces would start to do anything about the missiles piling up in Southern Lebanon?
the goverment of israel know that hezbollah is armed now with scud , this is the first time that israel can not even attack and exterminate this potencial danger. the only thing to do is cry.
The United nations caused the problem in the Middle East when it created Israel to be a refuge for stateless, persecuted Jews, remnants of the nazi Holocaust. However, an unintended consequence was that Arabs lost property and homes. They should be justly compensated. The UN should establish a commission to hear claims from all of those, including Jews, who lost property because of the creation of Israel by the UN. The claimants should be justly compensated by the UN. The money will come from UN sources like member states and benefactors.
The UN said Ban also asked the Israeli government to let construction materials into the Gaza Strip, where the inhabitants are struggling to rebuild their lives after the brief Hamas-Israeli war in the winter of 2009. Oh is that so ?,how come they have the wherewithal for their qassams and weaponry. What a load of disingenuousness by Ban. Israel has clamped down crossings between the two sides, which has severely hurt Palestinian economy and living conditions. No Israel has not clamped down the crossings. Not when Israel sends them trucks full of goods everyday. I hope Barak keeps his mouth tight shut. Knowing how he is only too ready to give the country away piecemeal. Oh well another visit to Washington for same old, same old.
