Israeli F-16 jets flew shortly after midnight over the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, firing a missile at each of the two training camps of the al-Qassam Brigade in the east and west of the city, respectively, witnesses said.
The two facilities were destroyed, Hamas reported.
An Israeli army spokesman earlier told Israel Radio that several homemade rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip toward the Negev area in southern Israel, with no injuries reported. Two rockets landed near Lahish, while another two exploded near the south Israel city of Ashkelon.
The IDF spokesperson said in a statement that "the IDF will not tolerate an attempt to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and will respond with determination to any attempt to use terror against the State of Israel. The IDF holds the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip."
Palestinians have expressed concern that a renewed escalation of violence could jeopardize a potential vote by the United Nations in September on their request for recognition of a Palestinian state.
The de facto Hamas government in Gaza reached an agreement several weeks ago with minor militant groups to stop launching rockets at Israel.
Some Islamist groups linked to al-Qaida have refused to be committed to the deal and claimed responsibility for the recent rocket attacks.

Why not just get rid of the hammas group! Israel has the upmost power to locate and destroy anything, why not kill all those "terrorists" and get the story over with and start developing a treaty to create borders and generate peace, maybe some people from Gaza will forgive Israel maybe not, but its better than nothing.
Every action has a reaction.. Same goes with life..
Fed up with this story : killing, Kassam & Retaliation ! the price is up & growing dangerousely. What r u looking after by such story? Peace is a necessity for arabs & israelis
hamas is laughing at us. how about real retaliation- carpet bomb the best and most expensive part of gaza- carpet bomb their malls then these cowards will start running away
The pals targetted civilians and hit rocks and sand. The IAF should have been targetting terrorists, but instead targetted rocks and sand. I don't know who is worse: the terrorists firing the rockets at civilians or the IAF failing to take out those who target civilians.
You would imagine that the nuts who fire these rockets would understand the law of cause and effect. by now but they obviously don't. I suppose the UN or Iran will pay to have these training camps repaired.
Why wait ?
could you people ever be honest?
Because, of course, starting in the middle allows Israel to ignore the event that started all this i.e. the killing of two Palestinians in the West Bank during an IDF raid.
Stop treating them like animals that can't control themselves.
see, now who is not starting at the beginning? the reason for the raid was to arrest a terrorist. so had the 2 not engaged idf troops they would not have been killed in the raid and had they not been involved in terror in the first place there would have been no raid
...from Gaza as a legitimate response (by Hamas or the PA?) to an Israeli police raid within the occupied West Bank that ended in violence when the suspects attacked the soldiers?
which starts at the end.
Good that retaliation is swift and without casualties. Keep up the good job !
Good job Israel you have destroyed another empty target thus sparing the terrorist who terrorize us. How about next time striking the terrorist training camp when it is in use.
is going to launch rockets, you'd think they'd aim them where they were going to do some damage, besides stirring up the sand. They know there will be air strikes coming. How long does Israel think the world will buy these stories?
You are not easy to understand...that is apart from your deep dsown hatred, and of buying into brainwashing one sided information.Do you noit understand that the reason for little Israel having to be strong is to protect from Hamas /Hezbollah who wish to destroy it.
it's evidence that the aim was off?
Gaza fires rockets. Israel responds with air strikes. World goes crazy when Israel responds and ignores Gazans firing rockets. Same story, different day.
This is really too little to make a difference. Unless there is direct damage to Hamas officials and their personal property this game will keep on going until some Israelis are killed.
