Israel Air Force fighter jets struck two targets in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for a Qassam rocket attack launched earlier into southern Israel by Gaza militants, IDF spokesperson's office said on Tuesday.

The first airstrike targeted a building in central Gaza suspected as serving as a Hamas center, and the second targeted a smuggling tunnel under the borderline between Egypt and the coastal enclave.
Hamas said Israeli aircrafts attacked a Hamas training base near the central Gaza town of Deir al-Balah. No one was hurt.

The IDF spokesperson said in a statement that Israel holds the Hamas responsible for maintaining the calm in the Gaza Strip and said they will continue to respond to any attacks on Israeli citizens.

Earlier on Tuesday, a Qassam rocket hit the southern city of Ashkelon, which borders with the Gaza strip. No injuries or damage were reported.

The territory has recently seen significant escalation between Gaza militants and the Israeli army, after an increase in rocket attacks out of Gaza toward Israeli targets.
