The statement from the armed wing of Hamas, a group that opposes any dialogue with Israel, said the "Qassam Brigades announces its full responsibility for the heroic operation in Hebron."
"Hamas praises the attack and regards it as a natural response to the crimes of the occupation," said Sami Abu-Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza, adding that the attack was proof "of a failure of security coordination" between Israel and the Palestinians.

Hamas' military wing said it would carry out more operations after claiming responsibility for the shooting.
"This attack is a chain in a series of attacks, some have been executed, and others will follow," Abu Ubaida, spokesman for the group, told Reuters.
The West Bank-based Palestinian Authority said it would take action to prevent a repeat of a militant attack which killed four Israeli settlers in the West Bank on Tuesday.
In a statement issued by his office, Prime Minister Salam Fayyad condemned the attack, which was claimed by the armed wing of the Hamas Islamist movement which governs the Gaza Strip.
"We condemn this operation, which goes against Palestinian interests," Fayyad said.

A question to Hamas, when has armed violence or attacks on Israeli civilians ever gained Palestinians anything. Murdering Israelis, even if they are settlers, is morally wrong and politically stupid.
so now the PA is security for illegal squatters?
Hamas once again proves it has no pratical plan to succeed in ending the occupation and delivering freedom and indepence to the Palestinian people. They are correct in a number of their assessments, namely, that Israel is not interested in peace, at least not peace that involves any degree of justice or comprimise. But, to resort to violence, even if it against a violent and thugish settler population is NOT the way to win this battle. Israel thrives on violence and there is little doubt Israel will deploy 10x more violence in response to this. Israel must be beaten where they are weak, in the area of moral highground. Nonviolent resistance, boycotts, politics ... is the only way to confront and defeat Israel.
but this event highlights that the end of the day, the Pals (and in fact the Arab/Muslim world) still has a lot of soul searching to do...
great a confession. Now send in a number of hit squads and quietly take out haniyeh , and others in teh hierarchy, and then blow up their houses with their families inside so tehy udnerstand that they and their families are not immune. Oh sure the Un will cry foul, hamas will cry foul, but these clown understand escalating violence. Israel needs to do more than blow up tunnels . Start winkling out their command and control. perhaps that nice training college they made for new recruits along with teh recruits?
