Hamas: Palestinians will gain nothing from direct peace talks with Israel

Hamas PM Ismail Haniyeh praises Gaza's steadfastness in the face of Israel's blockade, says Palestinians should place their trust in God.

The Palestinian people will gain nothing from direct Middle East peace talks with Israel, Gazan Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh told the Palestinian Ma'an news agency on Monday, a little less than a week before the planned launch of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Israel and the Palestinians accepted on Friday an invitation by the United States and other powers to restart direct talks on Sept. 2 in a modest step toward forging a peace deal within 12 months to create a Palestinian state and peacefully end one of the world's most intractable conflicts.

Speaking at a Gaza Strip mosque on Monday, Haniyeh said that the scheduled negotiations would not restore Palestinians' rights or give them control over religious sites, saying that they "should trust God, who will be an ally of the Palestinians."

According to the Ma'an report, Haniyeh also praised the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in the face of Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, saying the Palestinians were a "model for the Arab nations and Islamic countries."

On Sunday, Ma'an reported that Hamas had cancelled a planned reconciliation meeting with rival Palestinian faction Fatah over the weekend over the recently announced direct Mideast peace talks.

The meeting was meant to be another attempt at ending divisions going back to the militant Hamas group's violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in June 2007, which left the more moderate Fatah movement in charge only of the West Bank.

According to the Sunday report, the meeting, which was to take place Saturday evening, was indefinitely postponed with Hamas official Salah Bardawil telling Ma'an that Fatah had "made it too difficult" for the meeting to take place.

Earlier Monday, Haaretz reported that PA President Mahmoud Abbas had warned that renewed Israeli construction in settlements after the end of the construction freeze in late September would bring the newly-launched direct negotiations to a grinding halt.

Abbas conveyed the message in letters sent to U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and the High Representative of the European Union on Foreign Policy, Catherine Ashton.

"It's impossible to conduct negotiations alongside settlement construction," Abbas wrote.

might go like this: Abbas goes home without any real "peace deal" that makes the WB into a viable state free of Israeli interference. As a result, he falls out of favor for being a wimp. Hamas gains popularity and establishes itself in the WB as the only political faction that is willing to tell the people there the truth about the occupation's intentions. Israel gets to cry like a little girl about how they have no partner for peace and enforce an apartheid state. Israel becomes even more internationally isolated. Iran goes atomic and US stops paying Israel billions a year not to use a-bombs since there is now a MAD deterrent in the region. Oops. Hope those settlements are worth it to you!

All Israeli governments demonstrate the same trio of unpleasant core traits: 1 - Compulsive, kleptomaniac addiction to seizing Palestinian land; 2 - Serial contempt for all laws and agreements; 3 - Ingrained ability to lie, deceive and weasel. As Netanyahu is, as usual for an Israeli PM, ably demonstrating all three, what possible purpose can there be in sitting through another painful Israeli charade and con job? Hamas and everybody else knows that the only thing Israel understands is force - Pal uprising No 3, declaration of Pal independence or escalating UN sanctions. There is no salvation or solution on offer from the US-Israeli Zio League which is running the peace talks scam.

What's funny and senseless are the typical Anti-Israel crowd. Israel asks for direct talks, finally Abbas agrees, like it is a favor? Of course Hamas rejects the talks, states they will not honor any agreements made by Abbas. So the civil war between Hamas/Fatah continues, and in these direct talks Abbas is, apparently, only speaking for half the Government. Yet somehow the Anti-Israel writers, already think the U.S. needs to apply force on Israel, to force Israel to make concessions. What nonsense, laughable, illogical, nonsense. Israel has already proven by two past peace treaties, that Israel can make Huge concessions. While Hamas and the Palestinian have proven, they will make none. While still referring to the blockade of Gaza as if it has a negative effect on Gazans...it does not...if fact, the truth be known, Hamas is angry at the recently lifted restrictions (BY Israel) in Gaza. Hamas would rather be price gouging their people with the black market goods smuggled from Egypt. Hamas is losing money because smuggling is down, the criminal smuggler's are having to sell their Egyptian goods at a big loss. WHY YOU ASK? Because Israeli goods are cheaper and better quality, and the Gazan people prefer the Israeli products. There IS NO CRISIS in GAZA. But they still stick to the phony story to elicit undeserved sympathy. Of course I'LL be accused of Israeli propaganda, but the truth is right here below from an independent source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_149956&v=qWulkAQDmDo&feature=iv One of the dirty little secrets they don't want the world to know, like the new MALLS, WATER PARKS, LUXURY RESTAURANTS, FOOD COURTS FILLED WITH A WIDE VARIETY AND ABUNDANCE OF FOOD and the increasing middle class that uses these centers. Just more whining, Israel wants peace, Hamas want to destroy Israel, period. CASE CLOSED

Of course, there is always a "first", and Haniyeh may be proven wrong, although I doubt it this time. So far, the Palestinians gained whatever they gained by "resistance" only, not by being "good kids". Until the First Intifada (late 1987), Israel did not intend to allow an independent Palestinian state. With the Intifada, which also heralded the birth of military Hamas, did it begin to sink in that Arafat was preferable to Hamas. Israelis replaced Likud by the Rabin government, which went to Oslo and made a deal. The second Intifada forced Sharon to leave Gaza. We are now awaiting further developments. Incidentally, continued "resistance" may have caused harm (by undermining Israeli confidence in Oslo), but such harm may have been waiting to happen anyhow by right-wing Jewish resistance. (Rabin was assassinated not because of Hamas.) In any case, with Netanyahu, Haniyeh's view is the safer one to bet on.

It takes a little bit of intelligence to understand what is being said, which SDHD does not demonstrate. If I say that the First Intifada caused Israel to do the Oslo deal, this includes "Israel recognized the PLO, allowed them to reenter the territories, provided them with weapons, trained their police forces, helped them establish Palestinian controlled zones, etc." Oslo was not just a "hand-shake", but a DEAL. Now SDHD thinks that Oslo was a hand-shake, and the Israeli payment that followed was unrelated, and given because the Palestinians were "good". My suggestion to this genuine "dummy": You don't have the brains, so stop chasing every passing car, you might get run over. Better visit the dumpster to get satisfaction.

Israel always has Hamas front and center specifically because it is an easy target for Palestinian rejectionism, the great boogy-man hiding under the bed ready to slit your throat as you sleep. Forget that Hamas has made significant gesture, public anouncenmts by their leaders that anount to defacto recognition of Isreal, forget offers of long term truce (which have further been hinted at as permanent, also in public leadership comment), forget all, run around as if in a demented state shouting "The Charter, The Charter... they want us all dead!". In this sense Hamas serves Israeli interests, serves the true rejectionists.

Is an atheist better because he commits terrible acts without invoking God? Atheism is a religion - Mao had his Bible, Hitler his "priests". Whatever "faith" view one holds is his religion, some more or less tolerant than others, some more or less self-righteous and convicted than others. I am not a member of any group, but most atheists I know are more convicted of their position than most "religious" I know. I really can't believe that there is anyone dim enough to believe that peace talks can actually lead to peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel doesn't need the peace and they will have to make substantial sacrifices in order to agree to any peace plan. This means that Israel is motivated against making peace. The only variable is the different methods which Israel uses to avoid responsibility for failed peace attempts. The conclusion is always obvious though. Only America can motivate Israel to make the sacrifices they will need to make for peace. Obama is far too much of a weakling to motivate Israel. Cutting support and perhaps sanctions will be needed to gain Israels attention.
