The settlements are insignificant, a side show &, as Sinai demonstrated, reversible. What Hamas does, sow death and destruction, is profound and irreversible. Comparing the two is outrageous. Moreover, why shouldn't Jews be permitted to lie in areas under Palestinian control? Incidentally, the basis of settlers living in the WB is not based on belief. Its based on history, the fact (not belief) that Jews lived in the WB and never voluntarily left. Be that as it may, the Pals and Israelis should negotiate the issues without pre-conditions. The Pals have a precondition of freezing of settlements. I don't see any pre-conditions that the Israelis have, not even repudiation of the Pal commitment to terminate Israel!!!!

Hamas is very dangerous to the goals of the Israeli nation. Hamas will not settle for any settlements and unlike Abbas is quite capable and inclined to use terrorism as a weapon. Thirty years of contempt, bombing and blockade have not harmed Hamas for it's strategy is founded in the existence of such actions against it and the Palestinians. Hamas has bided it's time for the last 5 years as Abbas tried to do what most Palestinians want - wage peace to win Palestine. Dahlan's fumbled coup attempt in Gaza delivered that region to total Hamas control a few years back, but real influence in the West Bank has eluded the organization. With Abbas destroyed by Israel and sold out by Obama Hamas is making it's move for total power. Israel is the occupying power which 'starves' Gaza and displaces Palestinians with settlers. Thus Hamas uses Israel as the hate object and Abbas's failed supplication to Israel as their 'proof' that only Hamas may lead the way to a Palestinian state. These guys are a product of the Occupation and are very adept at what they do. Unlike Israeli's Hamas understands how to use war to take political objectives. Hamas is trying to goad Israel into over action which will further discredit Abbas, and convince Palestinians that their only hope for survival is resistance.

Omar ....Before 1967 Gaza was occupied and controlled by Egypt.. West Bank was occupied and controlled by Jordon. No suicide bombers or demonstarations. Because they were not Palestinians ...they were Egyptian and Jordanian. Any wimper from them and they would be smacked down hard. But way before Athens, Rome, Instanbul, or London ruled, it was Hebrew/Israeli territory. Omar, if this comes down to simple religious timelines , Islam is out of the picture. Even when the area was controlled by Jordan and Egypt or by the ottomans or by the Europeans still the people there always considered themselves as Palestinians for centuries. In 1929 Palestine soccer team played against Egypt for the qualification of the first world cup. Many books in the middle ages mention the Palestinians as well. Recognizing their abilities to achieve their political ends would not be ''legitimatizing' them. Quite the opposite. Israel has failed to deal effectively with the threat of Hamas for 30 years because it insists upon not recognizing the abilities and methods of political gain practiced by Hamas. The worst thing that can happen is to see Hamas take over in the West Bank as it has Gaza. Israel would be wise to stop helping Hamas achieve that goal.

A 'militant' is someone engaged in warfare. A 'terrorist' is someone who uses the tactic of instilling terror as a method of warfare. The Palestinians have no other means of warfare available.
