Greece blocks departure of all Gaza-bound ships
Greece issues statement forbidding departure of ships from its ports to maritime area of Gaza in bid to prevent breach of Israel’s naval blockade, further delaying the flotilla's departure.
By Amira Hass, Barak Ravid and Reuters Tags: Gaza Gaza flotilla USThe Greek government issued a statement on Friday, saying that the departure of ships with Greek and foreign flags from Greek ports to the maritime area of Gaza has been prohibited. The statement explained that this is in a bid to prevent a breach of Israel’s naval blockade.
The Greek government stressed that local Hellenic Coast Guard Authorities must take all appropriate measures to implement the decision. It also warned that the broader maritime area of the eastern Mediterranean Sea will be continuously monitored by electronic means for tracking the movement of ships trying to participate in the flotilla.

Naval authorities have already implemented the order, blocking both an American and Canadian ship planning to participate in the pro-Palestinian Gaza flotilla set to take place next week.
However, in light of Greece's decision to block all ships heading to the strip, the flotilla has been delayed further.
American activists attempted to set sail from Greece toward Gaza on Friday aboard a boat dubbed "The Audacity of Hope", defying calls from Israel to cancel and the ban by Athens.
The boat left Perama port for the open seas, a Reuters witness said.
Shortly after leaving the port, Greek authorities stopped the boat, and the boat was sent back to a Greek naval port several hours later.
The “Tahrir”, a Canadian boat also planning to participate in the flotilla, remained docked on Friday after port authority officials boarded the ship demanding its license. Activists handed over the documentation; however they claimed that the ship fulfills all the necessary criteria needed to set sail.
Sandra Ruch, owner of the Tahrir, is currently meeting with port authorities in a bid to get the ship’s license back.
David Hick, head of the steering committee for the flotilla and a linguistics professor from Canada told Haaretz that port authorities gave no grounds for taking away the Tahrir’s license, only saying that this was a directive from the Greek president’s office not to allow ships to embark from Greek ports.
The Audacity of Hope and the Tahrir are two of the boats planning to take part in a flotilla aimed at challenging Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. A spokeswoman announced Friday that it will set sail next week, in spite of repeated delays that activists blame on Israeli sabotage.
"Israel is doing its very, very best to make sure we don't get out of port," spokeswoman Greta Berlin said, speaking by telephone from Greece where some of the ships are moored.
"We want to move the boats by July 5 to get to our rendezvous point no later than July 6 or 7 ... We will go with what we have," she added.
The original plan was to have 15 ships set sail, however the current count stands at nine boats hoping to take part in the mission, Berlin said in her statement.
The flotilla is set to head toward Gaza a little over a year after Israeli marines stormed another pro-Palestinian flotilla that had approached the strip. Nine activists died in the on-board clashes, provoking an international outcry.

It is about time that Athens woke up and allied straight up with Israel. Enough said action talks by itself. Gaza is not starving?? What about a Ship for the Kurds of Turkey? Or the Greeks of Occupied Cyprus? In addition I don t see any Arab crying for the Greek Cypriots condition in occupied Cyprus or the rights of Greeks in Constantinople? I am sure in Haaretz they won't publish my comments but rest assure that we the majority of Greeks side with Israel and not with the Islamic fundamentalism of Hamas and left extremism from wherever it stems that has sided together for the destruction of Democracy in the Mediterranean.
When events don't favor antisemites, the standard response is to blame the events on international Jewish domination. Now which Jews are to "blame" for stopping this flotilla of terrorists is undisclosed as usual presumably because, I suppose, we're just THAT sneaky. We always walk on our tippy toes and whisper in pig Latin (or pig Greek).. Exactly how the Jews/Israel control the Greek government even though Greece is essentally devoid of Jews or Jewish influence. I suppose we Jews just wake up every day with only 1 thought on our minds - How can we better and more effectively control the world's economy, politics, and culture? We especially excel in bringing disasters to mankind. 9/11, the Bubonic plague. You got it. Forget that a Jew, Jonas Salk cured polio. Salk's mother must have been only a half Jew. I guess it's just a God-given gift. We are just SO damn insidious and evil. Can you believe it. .
The lawless and criminal nature of the flotilla leaders generally, and the US "Audacity of Hope" in particular, is now firmly established. With illegal conduct piled on top of illegal conduct, US has little choice but to prosecute them on return to the US if they try to enter Gaza waters, if the Obama regime wants to be credible with its recent pronouncement. And remember, theres still statute-of-limitations time to prosecute the Americans on the 1st "flotilla", unless the corrupt Obama team, as usual, were just dishonestly trying to score PR points with US voters (who oppose Gaza and flotilla thugs by a wide margin).
..affraid from banks, affraid from USA, affraid from Israel, affraid from IMF,... George Papandreou is a COWARD who should resign immediately
If you guys have enough time to worry about this flotilla you surely don't need any help with your debt.
Greece has to do what USA and Europe command otherwise there won't be any Bailout funds for its economy even if its actions suppress democracy and encourages occupation and violation of human rights.
north koreans are starving, hostages to a brutal regime why are you mum about it ! do you dare aproach the somali coast?.the somalies are starving too, derogatory speaking you are sailors of calm and sweet waters!!!loosers!!week end militant!!!
Prude cause my country blocked all those hidden islamofasists . All those pretenders who bellive that to be woman is worse to be dog . For all that democracy is unknow word .For all that crimes in Darfur Syria Lybia Yemen etc there is not exist . Well done greece. HUMAN RIGHTS TO ISLAMIC COUNTRIES
At least they are not trained to hate themselves! Bravo!
Israel does not want to have these ships sail for Gaza. This would result in boarding, and the possibility of resistance by the passengers and those who are claimed to want to kill IDF soldiers when they board. As a result of Greece denying these ship's approval to sail and Israel efforts to put pressure on these governments , in effect they are preventing what could end up as another shootout if some passengers did indeed turn violent. So say thank you and go home.
Good move by Greece, because it's ports were being used for propaganda purposes. If the flotilla members wanted to help the Gazan people there are far better ways. One container ship going to Ashdod could deliver far more useful goods without the hassle and danger, and attempts to modify Hamas' terror regime are more to the point. If Hamas' gave back Shallit and stopped smuggling in rockets to attack Israel, it might trully advance the chances of peace. Propaganda stunts like the flotilla, ony enhance extremism. The flotilla members are naive, or malicious.
The Greek "bail out" probably has a clause stating they must not allow humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Israelis (and big daddy) sure have their knickers in a twist. Silly, because the whole world knows and Israel just keeps digging a bigger and bigger hole.
now that's smart, wise, honest and straightforward governance....no bs, no lies, no bs...just honest and fair governance. well done greece. its time people stood up to these "activist jew haters"
to Greece for making the right/rational choice. Viva Israel
so dependent on the money of international institutions in which the US, the poodle of Israel, hold such influence... What they have to do to get their money... Well done, lads, you'll be declared a new Settlement of Eretz Israel !
And, they do not wnat to have the boats loaded with terrorists and terrorists sympathizers bent on a military confrontation with Israel leaving Greek ports.
It pays to have NEW FRIENDS!!! Israel and Greece and FRIENDS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This shows how certain governments surrender for the political and economical pressure of israel, and iys supporters in USA and europe.hOWEVER THE STRUGGLE AGAINST INJUSTICE AND BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS WILL CONTINUE.
I wonder what leverage has been deployed to bring about this disgraceful decision. However, on the principle of equality, something the Greeks should no something about, perhaps Greece along with other obstructing states will prevent all maritime traffic from sailing to Israel, thereby treating both the besieged and those besieging with equanimity. If this is not the case then one can only assume that Greece actively supports a continuation of the collective punishment of the Gaza’s population.
Remember that the St-Louis was not allowed to reach Palestine at the time. So it is time to end this blockade and then maybe even Gilad can come home. Israel was supposed to have left Gaza, no?
according to the law of blockade which was derived from customary international law and codified in the 1909 Declaration of London. It was updated in 1994 in a legally recognized document called the “San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea.” Under some of the key rules, a blockade must be declared and notified to all belligerents and neutral states, access to neutral ports cannot be blocked, and an area can only be blockaded which is under enemy control. “On the basis that Hamas is the ruling entity of Gaza and Israel is in the midst of an armed struggle against that ruling entity, the blockade is legal”
But it is false. they don't shows you who else is on board: Khaled Mashaal's son in law - the head of Hamas's military wing. and the former Finance Minister of the Hamas government. They sure as hell are NOT peace activists who fly doves into the sky.
Now Israel calls upon it's new best friend (since the split with Turkey). Some people think that Israel just courted Greece to make the ex-lover jealous. Now it appears that there is some substance to the new relationship if Greece is going to do some stooging for Israel. Actually, no nation stooges for Israel for free (except America). Israel doesn't pay any nation to stooge for them. Who pays for the stooging? I thought you would never ask. Remember that Greece is the most bankrupt nation in the EU and doesn't even have two drachma to rub together. America also is brok and in debt, but has a huge line of credit. You can finish the story I am sure. Israelis get what they want and it is free of charge. What else matters?

i live in sderot and my kids sleep in a concrete room without windows so they won't get hurt from the rockets the gazans throw at them!
Greece is behaving like a responsible sovereign state with regard to another sovereign state, Israel.
I can't find any information of a "David Hick" teaching linguistics in Canada. Is this made up?
Maybe they should change the destination to Al Arish. It is close to Gaza and then they can enter thru Rafah. That would disappoint the IDF and Netanyahu, but most likely would survive. Turning Rafah into a real international crossing would be a victory for the people of Gaza.
Greece knows the true intent of these "activists" It is not to help the Pals, but to harm Israel. Good for Greece.
buit also sold themselves to Zionists
Crazy leftist are having bad days, first, they can't get their comedic "flotilla" going and are running around like cockroaches after sombody turned the lights on... then their hero Hugo Chavez is diognosed with cancer. It hasn't been this bad for them since Arafat died.
Under pressure from Israel and the US, Greece bowed down to the orders from those who fear that a boat of peaceful American citizens bearing nothing more lethal than 3000 letters from Americans will threaten the well being of Israel. In the end the loser is Israel who shows its cowardice and its willing to lie and use sabotage to prevent this flotilla from sailing. Israelis should hang their heads in shame.
Besides that Gaza is not in need of aid. The day Gaza recognizes Israel and agrees to not rocket it or send human and other types of bombs across the border the blockade will be lifted. Thats where their efforts should lie. They need to lobby Hamas to make peace with Israel and the legal blockade will end and Gaza can become part of the "Palestinian" state. Until then these fake activists are barking up the wrong tree. You can see in the pictures they are really for a good time and a good feeling. They long for the 60s. Wake up people, you are supporting people that oppress women, kill homosexuals, condone honor killings, enslave their wives etc... there is nothing peacefulness about Hamas, yet Israel is leader of mid-east womens rights, gay rights, social justice, the list goes on. Stop your ignorance and stop pretending your fighting for peace, your not.
Israel and the US are taking advantage of Greece's financial vulnerability. Uncle Sam said to Greece "You need money....we need this little problem solved" One word. Pathetic.
Why does our governmant constantly suck up to Turkey? Time and again the Greeks have proved to be better friends to Israel than those two-faced Turks.
At last the Greeks are on the right side of this argument. I hope we remain there. Israel is no more aggresive than Greece was in the fist century after our independence from Turkey. We Greeks should study history, take a critical view of today and realise that Israel is our natural ally.
Greeks are in a desperate financial situation and need the manna from IMF/WB... so they are soooo easily pliable to the influence of Israel's best lackey, the US, so prominent in those institutions... Well done Israel ! I declare in your name Greece a new settlement !
Thousands have been shot in Syria, thousand more living in tents inside Turkeys border and these people have to send a ship to Gaza. The biggest problem in Gaza is which mall to shop in today. Disgraceful waste of so-called international solidarity to the suffering.
Run the Greek blockade! After all, if Greece is banning your flotilla, aren't THEY now the ones responsible for keeping Gaza, "THE WORLD'S LARGEST OPEN AIR PRISON"? Why don't you hold a "sit in" at the port in Piraeus? Why don't you protest the Greek government? Scared? So, why not change course and sail to Syria? Afraid of Assad? Answer: Because you know that the IDF would treat you like a stern but gentle father, tow you in, and send you back to your liberal democratic countries. While Assad's men would slowly gouge out your eyeballs with rusty spoons and watch you chew them.
now you can't go to gaza, find another cause, like the oppressed of syria or even the oppressed of iran.that should make your paymasters happy.
Sorry you sad sacks...you ain't gettin' there!
All the "activists" are wearing black shirts, how befitting!
Like most goyim form Northern Germany, I do not know Ivrit. But if Greece sticks with that decision, one expression I remember seems to fit: Kol haKavod
Funny. Looks like the Flotilla has no respect for authority anywhere.
Is it perfectly legal to do so....??? Probably yes. Does it show Israel and the U.S. in a favourable light ?? (Most) probably not.
For all efforts to stop this foolish flotilla! It feels good to know that not every country is runned by islamofacists!
I wonder how the rest of Europe will view this action. It is clearly a reaction to some Israeli pressure - though quite what that could be I don't know. I suppose that while Israel doesn't have the funds to bail Greece out, it probably has enough to line George Papandreou's pockets.
Greece is a patheitic country
shall be blessed. Those who curse Israel shall be cursed.
Nothing is more terrifying to Netanyahu that Americans Jews who aren't in lockstep with the Leader. Their boat has been sabotaged once and is under threat again. Why the Canadians are getting the same dastardly treatment is a mystery.
Pass popcorn, pls!
Israel and the US need to hang their democracy heads in shame. Please don't refer to your countries as democracies ever again because you clearly don't know what the word means or how to apply it. What a farce!
You can sabotage boats, you can impose bans, you can legislate - but you can't wipe out the people's yearning for justice! You only make more enemies and yourselves ridiculous by putting obstacles in their way. The truth will live on.....
It's really cringeworthy that Greek authorities are allowing themselves to be manipulated in this way.
I love it!
The Greeks know better than the Americans. They can see a map; they know what a tiny nation Israel is and they know that huge Egypt also has a border with Gaza. Bravo Greeks!!!
it's a propaganda ploy. if the crews wanted to help gaza's residents they would put pressure on hamas to become a civil entity and not an islamic terror cell. if the palestinians want a viable civil state they must go to the negotiating table without precondition and without hamas which is pledged to destroy israel.
Whose boots is the greek government licking just to scramble out from their possible default.
It is non of your business to lecture Greece.
Why can't the Pals and their fellow travelers move away from suicide bombing and use non-violent means to resist the. . . . oh wait. Never mind. Let's see. How about this? All efforts to delegitimize the Jewish and Democratic State must be resisted by any means necessary!
No occupation.
