Gilad Shalit heads home under medical supervision after reunion with his family
Soldier undergoes comprehensive medical examination after saying he felt unwell; Netanyahu tells Shalit: Welcome back, how good it is that you've come home.
By Ilan Lior and Haaretz Tags: Shalit swap Gilad Shalit Hamas IDFIsrael Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit flew back to his home in the northern town of Mitzpe Hila on Tuesday afternoon, hours after he was reunited with his family for the first time since he was abducted and taken to Gaza in June 2006.
Shalit was released from Hamas captivity on Tuesday morning. He arrived at the Israel Air Force base in Tel Nof, central Israel shortly afterward, where he saw his family for the first time in more than five years.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak greeted Shalit as he arrived at the air base, accompanied by an IDF medical team.
"Hello, Gilad. Welcome back to Israel," said Netanyahu. "It's so good to have you home." Shalit, who changed into an IDF uniform before a helicopter ride from the Gaza border, saluted the prime minister and then embraced him.
In an interview to the Egyptian Nile TV station Shalit said he learned of the deal to secure his release a week ago, and said that he had missed his family and friends during his captivity.
Immediately after his release, Shalit had a private phone conversation with his family members for the first time since being taken captive by Hamas in June 2006.
IDF Spokesman Yoav Mordechai said an initial physical examination of the IDF soldier found Shalit to be in good health.
He said later, however, that Shalit had felt unwell during the flight to the IAF base, and underwent a more comprehensive check-up before the decision was made to send him home to Mitzpe Hila, where hundreds of friends, relatives and supporters were waiting to give him a tumultuous and emotional welcome.

Israel freed 1,027 Palestinian and Israeli Arab prisoners to get Shalit back, including many who had been involved in terror attacks on Israeli civilians. The deal had been contested by Israelis who had lost family members in the attacks perpetrated by these convicted terrorists.

brave boy and hero.
This made my day and I am sure his family is over joyed.Israel has shown what a civilized country she is.Never leave a soldier in the field,no matter what it costs to get him or her back.
If something had gone wrong, whom would you have blamed? Golda Meir or Ben Gurion? BB in the Commander in Chief.
Both parties show that they are human beings and deserve life in this region .
is that a Air Force uniform he was given?
no, that's the Barak Brigade shoulder badge. His old Army unit.
Lest we forget ... On June 25, 2006, when Gilad Shalit was captured, two soldiers were killed: Hanan Barak and Pavel Slutzker. May their memories be forever blessed and may their families and friends be comforted with all those who mourn for them in Zion.
Poor guy,he looks like a nazi concentration camp prisoner...they must have been starving him for 5 yrs. Palestinian prisoners should get the same starvation treatment!!
They already do...in Gaza.
don't sound so funny now.
and wish all palestinians could also return to their homes.
what a truly amazing day seeing Gilad Shalit back home wearing his uniform and greeting his father. We should be proud of Israel, a truly amazing and honourable country. thank you for bringing Gilad home
One feelsreal sory for hinm ,just has became free and a whole army of journalists buged his mindthe tv has shown the interviev with him.One couldsee he was tired not suprisingly.Hpe he can have rest and relax having welldeserved rest and be with his family .all the atention is geting awaay.his father is realy good has worked for the sons fredom.
I don't think much of Bibi, but his picture looking at Glad hugging his Father, brought tears to my eyes, I might still change my mind on Bibi, great job and God bless.
some of them have been in Israeli jails since the 80s when they were hardly passed their teens, some of them are women, and we know that many children under the age of 18 are also still held in Israeli jails. Their stories are extremely sad, they are the victims in most cases of the brutal Israeli occupation and of torture in Israeli jail. Yet a young 24 year old soldier who participated actively in the illegal occupation gets all the world's attention and sympathy. I empathize no doubt for Gilat and his family, but any decent human being would recognise the injustice and racism the Palestinians continue to face.
In the name of brazilian nation, we are very happy to now that you are back home Gilad. Be welcome brother. felicidades !

what an amazing feeling and sigh of relief. I hoped this day would come but didn't think it ever would. I am so grateful that he is back in OK condition and can resume his life. He has gone through so much and now needs to heal. Here is to hoping that no more soldiers are ever captured again so that we don't need to release any of 'their' prisoners again.
HEY LOOK...WHO IS THE WINNER NOW ? 1-1027

LOVE from Sweden!!!!! God bless you Gilad, you've been in my prayers all these years. Im so glad you are back Home <3 Long live Israel! //Caroline Leván
5 years we have waited for this day.
He's so thin, so badly nourished, so weak. How about the palestinian prisoners? Do they look also as if they were freed from a concentration camp? Please circle to the world Shalit's pictures as he left his captors, to make sure this is how they treat us. They leave us alive, but in what condition? Never again!
Everyone says he looks well but he looks like a concentration camp survivor so ill and malnourished not many people say how bad he looks.
Gilad was always very skinny. He told us he was treated well. What's going on with you Schmuck?
He wish for peace between Israelis and Palestineans, he has not urged for more war an hate. Listen to Gilad, i think people like him might be the future for Israel/Palsetine, not the haters.
Beautiful, beautiful news and images. I wish him and his family all the best!
I am proud of you all. chasak we emaz! shalom uwra cha Yours Rosa From Berlin
very happy to see you back in israel. on october 18th you are back. 18 - for chai / life. enjoy your life, together with all your family and friends.
Just thinking of the day they will free their freedom-fighters sons and duaghters from Israeli occupation prioson keeps them motivated to continue the fight generation after generation. They cannot imagine peace while their family members in occupation jail!
let got never make a dad suffer his son's absence....
It is not assured that any of the prisoners will kill any Israelis, G-d forbid. But Gilad Schalit would have been killed if the exchange was not made. That is definite. Having Gilad murdered would not have brought back those lost to terror.
Many or most of the persons who say that the released prisoners will kill again also support the sick idea that Yigal Amir should be released. But if another Prime Minister makes a peace deal (Bezrat Hashem), wouldn't that scum kill again?
I AM VERY PROUD TO BE ISRAEL CITIZEN!!! THANK YOU THE ISRAELY GOUVERNEMENT CHALOM
readers may love the language When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.
Shalit has himself said he feels he is in good health, compare this to the hundreds of Palestinian prisoners who are doing a hunger strike in order to protest the subhuman conditions of Israeli prisons. Cynisism, pure cynicism
israel would release far more for this joyous day
That will be a true, joyous event, right Harzion ?
Gilads symphony of hope and freedom has finally been written . Welcome Home Gilad
the worst are in gaza and turkey and syria.the rest the shin bet will keep a close eye.most are out of israeli jurisdiction.
... to see Bibi's smiling face, taking the credit after he needlessly left Gilad to rot in Aza for five years before capitulating to the Hamas' terms
He stands firm, however the neighbours are all turning against Israel. If no one shifts its policies isolation (worldwide, not just regional) can do final harm to Israel. Bibi's standing is right, firm and conscious.
what a real hero; what a real gentleman.
the whole uniform thing highlights the truth: Gilat was a POW... Hamas should have given him access to the Red Cross and Israel should realise that his return should have not been achieved at this price. Fools. All dirty politics. Bibi gets his way to escape the civil protests while hamas gets his way to mute Abbas. And so the conflict continues
His actions & behaviour were in accordance with the same grace and impeccable self-conduct that his parents portrayed during the almost 5.5 years of his captivity. Inspiring people. G-d bless them & keep them safe, and Am Israel Chai!
agree!
Obviously some of this has rubbed off on Shalit. Perhaps Netanyahu can undergo the same treatment. better yet, Lieberman!
As the leader of Israel, he has to appear to be strong and in control. The interview's for a) the Palestinians to see, b) the Arab world to see, c) Israelis to see, in that order.
Very emotional
Thrilled that Gilad is back on Israel soil. What will happen next between Israelis and Palestinians? Israelis are calling for killing the prisoners and Palestinians are calling for another "Shalit". The citizens don't seem to have learned anything.
Israelis haven't learned anything. Palestinians have learned that kidnapping soldiers gets results (as opposed to killing terrorists and collateral damage.)
ex-prisoners were being returned to Gaza Palestinians were in the streets singing songs extolling the killing of Jews and Israelis. A celebration of evil minds.
The very best for the Shalit family, the IDF family and the Nation of Israel. Israel celebrates life .Shalom
What wonderful news. Thehomecoming lights up the dismal nightmare of the Israel/Palestine morass. May this flash of brightness grow into a new and rosy dawn of hope and good will for all.
I agree with the 1st poster that Gilad needs an extended period of calm and quiet with his family. Eventually, though, I would like to know if his views on Palestinians have been altered by his long captivity, if he has come to sympathize to any degree.
Today's moral relativism is so sickening. Gilad didn't kill anyone and he certainly didn't detonate a pizza parlor or bus filled with children. He is a part of the Israel DEFENSE Force that has been proven necessary time and time again by the blanket Arab refusal to accept any Jewish presence in this region.
sympathize with what?
A power who was kidnapped, denied visits by the red Cross, contact with anyone outside of his oppressors, in flagrant violation of every statute governing the treatment of captured enemy soldiers, and only released when Hamas decided that he was worth 1,000 rather than 1,500 Palestinians. Do you think Hamas took him to meet Palestinian families? Do you think he was given the opportunity to see daily life in Gaza? Do you think he was given an education on Palestinian history. His encounter was with an institution of terror. Not the Palestinian people.
What would you have learned from the violent abduction from your side of an internationally recognised border by a group who claims to be an ‘elected government’ which has in its mandate to destroy Israel and has a militant wing which carries out attacks against both civilians and soldiers, thus undermining any political or moral authority they might claim to have, and imprisonment for 5 years, kept alive only so that he could be used as a playing card for Hamas, so that they could negotiate the release of people who have the blood of hundreds on their hand, which has been proven through the judicial process which, funnily enough, doesn’t tend to exist in Gaza. I notice Gilad did not obtain a PhD though Open University or have repeated contact with his family throughout his imprisonment, unlike the aforementioned Palestinian prisoners, many of whom responsible to a significant degree for attacks which killed dozens of civilians. It is ridiculous to imply that he should have ‘learned’ something in this past five years of hell that he has endured. What should he have learned exactly? You imply that he perhaps should have learned to sympathise with the Palestinians. Sympathy for what? Palestinian claims for statehood and independence, I presume? How on earth would being locked up for five years mean that he is any more or less likely to sympathise with these claims? Which, by the way, were not the aim of Hamas in kidnapping and imprisoning him, and have nothing to do with his situation. Do not equate Hamas with these objectives – because they do not want this. If Palestinian statehood were achieved, and inclusive of Gaza, then Hamas might actually need to be accountable and would be under some obligation to act as a democratic and representative government, which they are not, and not as a prominent militant group, which they are. And don’t bring up their democratic election way back when...because i know of no ‘government’ which holds elections with as much frequency (or lack thereof, to be more specific) than Hamas.
and kept you captive for five years?
How do you know that he didn't kill anyone? He was part of a tank crew on the Gaza border. Be glad that he has returned home in one piece.
I think that depends on how he was treated...
That's why I asked my question. Maybe he no longer sees them as "brutes", but as human beings.
So far he has been quoted as saying that he is happy to be released and happy that Pal prisoners have been released. That he hopes this negotiated deal will lead to a negotiated peace deal with the Palestinians.
wearing a uniform makes no difference
errrrr a subjugated people perhaps?
Only Lieberman and his hateful Yisrael Beiteinu and brainwashed settlers and others from the rabidly right could oppose this return.
I guess the citizens of Israel that had their family members and loved ones murdered by many of these men don't have feelings.....I am sure the relatives of Israeli party goers murdered at Tel-Aviv night clubs are all brainwashed settlers and Russian Jews.....Quite a pathetic argument you make.
Israeli security forces estimate that 60 percent of freed terrorists return to terror. 178 Israelis have been killed since 2000 by freed terrorists. Your name-calling changes nothing and convinces no one.
It is not assured that any of the prisoners will kill any Israelis, G-d forbid. But Gilad Schalit would have been killed if the exchange was not made. That is definite. Having Gilad murdered would not have brought back those lost to terror.
its not that we don't want him back and we are all glade that he is back but what will you say to the next mother who looses a child to someone who was in jail. we know what is going to happen because its the same thing that has happened every time we have released terrorists for hostages. all we have done is swapped his life for several others.
Statistics/estimates from the Israeli security forces for propaganda purposes are as reliable as those supplied by Hamas (i.e. not remotely).
this is the best way to take the terrorists' motives away
How many Palestinians have beeen klilled by the most moral army in the world during the same period?? Minimum at the rate of 100!! It seems that jewish life is more worth than palestinian lives. Shame and disgust!!
Who mentioned Russians? I did not know Uzi Landau and Danny Ayalon and other leading members of that "party" were Russian. And would sentencing Shalit to death bring back the loved ones? Why should another Jew be killed? There is no guarantee that any of those released will kill. But Shalit WOULD have been killed for sure.
If Israel ends its occupation of Palestinian lands, there will be no need for the freed prisoners to go back to fighting. When will Israelis start thinking about a future full of stability and peace, and stop listening to those among them who would do whatever they can to prove that the Palestinians cannot be trusted.
For all the journalists, ghostwriters, paparazzi,... please let the guy and spend time with his family!
