Gaza flotilla organizer: We'll send convoys to Gaza on land

Head of IHH, Turkish activist group behind recent aid flotilla that tried to reach Gaza, promises 'surprises' to be revealed soon.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Gaza flotilla Turkey

The Turkish activist organization IHH that organized a flotilla of aid ships bound for Gaza in May announced on Saturday that the group will continue efforts to bring supplies to Gaza, not only by sea, but "land convoys will head for Gaza" as well, Channel 2 reported.

On May 31, Israeli Navy commandos boarded one of the flotilla ships, occupied mainly by IHH activists, in efforts to prevent the ship from reaching Gaza in violation of an Israeli naval blockade. Aboard the ship, the commandos were met with violence and a clash ensued, resulting in the deaths of 9 Turkish activists.

IHH leader Bulent Yildirim, speaking at an Istanbul conference attended by Muslim activists and litigators, said that "more flotillas will head to Gaza in the coming months, and additional convoys by land. This, together with many more surprises that we will reveal soon," Channel 2 reported.

"Zionist public relations are very powerful, and we must act accordingly," he added.

Following the deadly raid on the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara, Israel decided to ease the conditions of a three-year blockade on Gaza. Israel imposed the siege in 2007 after the Islamist group Hamas took control over the Gaza Strip in a violent coup. Though some restrictions have been lifted recently, Israel decided to maintain the naval blockade on the territory.

Last month, the IHH leader told an Arabic-language newspaper that "all the families of the martyrs from the first flotilla wish to take part in the next voyage."

The Turkish government is aware of the radical activities of the flotilla and did grant permission to them to engage the Israelis navy commando. Turkey has to decide if she wants to be a friend or an enemy of Israel. Israel must continue to enforce the blockade comes what may…….gooooooooo Israel goooo Jackson flomo Monrovia, Liberia

in Turkey, many people did not know even the name of IHH. Today, all the world is aware of them. If someone wants to bother Israel, it is enough to plan an aid convoy. This is really embarassing for Israel. Extreme-right Israeli government is very succesful to harm Israel with its wrong policies.

as u can see, israel doesnt feel terribly bopthered or frightened by the so-called aid flotillas. i think, even the dumbest person in the world understands now that israel will not let any of these ships park in gaza. it will be embarassing to see their ships being sent to egypt or ashdod. it will be embarassing

If Turkish government would do a favor to itself and spend more time on the real issues Turkey is facing such as a great exchange deficit, poverty due to unfair distribution of wealth, bribery, and corruption, PKK terrorism. instead of Israel and Gaza it would be much better for both countries.

We deported the Jews from Gaza (including the ones borne there), because it was obvious if they remained in Gaza they would be killed by the Palestinians. After we left, there was hope, and no siege whatsoever. To our surprise, Gaza Palestinians, freely and without any coercion, elected Hamas - which officially declares he plans to kill all Jews in Israel. (elections were democratic except that Fatah supporters were shot in the knees or thrown from the roof - "depending how tall is their building"). Then Sderot was bombed for 7 years. And Shalit was kidnapped, and for 4 years he had no visit whatsoever. We implored the world to talk to Hamas to stop the shelling of Sderot, with no success. Do any of you peace lovers, have any suggestion about an alternative course of action we could take, beside the "cast lead" operation and the siege? Now Shalit is still there, without red cross visits, but at least the bombing we had is over. I am truly sorry for the dead Palestinians in Gaza. I have a dream in which I think maybe Gaza Palestinians oppose bombing Israel and accept living side by side with us. But the reality is that they elected Hamas on their own will, and they supported all his actions.

That way we let them have their way! DEAL?

Foodstuffs can be more easily transferred to the Gazans by land. But it's clear that the ultimate aim of the flotillas is for the blockade to be lifted, while at the same time to have a political win of Israel. Israel just doesn't have the financial resources, diplomatic support and manpower to continue to manage these flotillas, particularly if larger ones were to set sail -- and as a combination of those three elements, cannot rely on military means. From now on the worst thing Israel can do is to encroach any future vessels, in international waters. Provocation or not, so far the flotilla organizers are winning spectacularly, make no mistake.

Libyan Gaza aid ship is part of succession intrigue in Tripoli. Since Libyan ruler Muammar Qaddafi, 68, picked Moatassem-Billah, son number four, to succeed him upon his retirement in three years, his eldest son, Seif al-Islam, has schemed tirelessly to stay in the limelight and avoid being passed over as future potentate of this oil- and gas-rich nation. Seif's latest dodge, according to DEBKAfile's intelligence sources, is the privately-launched Al-Amal (MV Almathea) for breaking Israel's naval blockade on the Gaza Strip. Awaited by the Israeli Navy Tuesday or Wednesday, Tripoli has officially disavowed the venture. His father, still on top of the palace intrigue in Tripoli, tried to put a crimp on Seif's game. Sunday, July 11, he suddenly banned the departure of private and chartered aircraft from Libyan airfields for Egypt, Greece, Crete or Cyprus, to make sure his ambitious son would not be able to join the ship and star in a political and propaganda triumph that would beat out his brother's chances in the succession stakes. An official spokesman in Tripoli made it clear on Monday, July 12, that Seif al-Islam is on his own: "Libya does not wish to intervene and believes the aid ship to Gaza conceals an adventure and a risk," he said. Seif saw his chance of cashing in on the international uproar by staging a stunt for leapfrogging his claim to the succession over that of his brother, one moreover, which the Libyan leader could not publicly thwart or condemn. But Muammar Qaddafi has done what he could to throw a spanner into Seif's plan. Prevented from launching Al Amal from a Libyan port, he had to relocate its point of departure to a Greek port and obstacles place in the path of his joining the expedition. So when the ship is intercepted by the Israel navy, Muammar and his chosen successor will be quietly celebrating

How to put an end to the "flotilla" problem once and for all
    • Logios
    • 17.07.10
    • 14:37

So far, Israel has decided to allow into Gaza all items except those fit for military use. What remains of the "siege" is not allowing the Export of finished goods even if raw materials can come in, as well as the prevention of movement of Gazans in and out of that territory (irrespective of security considerations). The inability to export essentially destroys the Gaza economy, rendering the population destitute and in need of food relief. With exports, the Gazans will not be in need of relief and all future "flotillas" will become pointless. Here is a good way to end the "flotillas", just lift the rest of the "siege". And here is another reason: a legal opinion (by the UN's Human Rights Council): "The [Goldstone] Report states that Israeli acts that deprive Palestinians in the Gaza Strip of their means of subsistence, employment, housing and water, that deny their freedom of movement and their right to leave and enter their own country, that limit their rights to access a court of law and an effective remedy, could lead a competent court to find that the crime of persecution, a crime against humanity, has been committed"- unhchr.ch/huricane/huricane.nsf/0/9B63490FFCBE44E5C1257632004EA67B?opendocument . In any event, the prevention of ships going into Gaza is justified by security concerns. The ports of Ashdod (Israel) and El-Arish (Egypt) are near the Gaza strip and should be used instead.

Just this week Lieberman has uttered a similar proposal
      • Lucy Somera
      • 17.07.10
      • 18:44

Lieberman proposed to open the naval way to Gaza so that the Gazans could take in and out whatever they like. Israel for its part would seal its border to Gaza out of security reasons. Well, guess, who is against this proposal? First of all the Palestinians themselves (Fatah has rejected it). And also European countries which recently demanded an end of the blockade (first of all Germany). You wonder? Well, one should should stop wondering when it comes to politics!

lifting of the blockade. Israel could have done this all on their own without seeking approval from other countries. Instead, he proposed that some other nation or entity should take over reponsibility from Israel of inspection of all goods coming in and out and only allow what Israel thinks should be allowed. That is why Lieberman was seeking international approval.

"Aboard the ship, the commandos were met with violence and a clash ensued, resulting in the deaths of 9 Turkish activists.' The fully armed commandos, illegally boarding the ship in international waters, expected rose petals to be thrown at them in appreciation of their unexpected but most welcome presence. Since this was not the case 9 civilians perished because of this most inappropriate behavior.

    • 19 15
It has already been proven that
      • 17.07.10
      • 16:01

8 out of the 9 people that died on the ship were IHH members (terrorists, not activists) Most of the real activists were send below deck by the IHH when the idf commando's arrived. They were playing with the army of a country which is facing a constant threat... They knew what was going to happen. The commando's didn't know that they were gonna be attacked once on board, which explained why most of them had paintball guns. These are all well known facts, and the international community also knows this, you should try to stay up to date.

The situation of Gaza and his help by many organisations like IHH reminds me of the Berlin-blockade of 1948, where Berliners had also been blockaded by the Soviet army forces. But then the West-allied airforces helped Berlin by bringing food and other necessacities of daily life. 9 months later the blockade had been removed because it proved as useless. Berliners could not been brought to their knees. And so do the Gaza-people.

Aside from Israel, France and Germany rate the IHH as a terrorist organisation, so Egypt will now have to block the IHH from shipping any goods and services by land or sea, to Gaza Strip, or Israel will have to secure the Gaza Strip-Egytpian border. In addition, Israel should protest the cooperation of Turkey with the IHH at the UN, if for no better reason than to establish a legal basis from which to confront Turkey whenever the inevitable confrontation occurs.

If you think Turks are as easy as Arabs then you are in denial. Ask the men that were saved by the Turks at the Battle of Kunuri in North Korea. The Americans of the second division to a man thank the bravery of the Turks that saved them from being wiped out. I would think twice in tackling the Turks.

But not nearly as strange as Israel's views on justice/injustice. As an example, Nazi Germany perecuted Jews during the 30's and 40's. So therefore, Israel has the right to persecute Pals during the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, and 2010's? Sounds like a strange and racist and terroristic idea to me. I would be more sympathetic if Israel demanded a portion of Germany for a homeland, as reparations for what the Nazi's did. But the poor Pals are not the ones that oppressed the Jews. So what gives Israel the right to opress them?
