Gates: Hezbollah has more rockets than most governments in the world
U.S. Defense Secretary and Defense Minister Barak discuss Hezbollah Scuds, Iranian nuclear issue.
By Natasha Mozgovaya Tags: Hezbollah Ehud Barak Iran nuclear Israel newsU.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Tuesday that Hezbollah has more missiles than most governments in the world, during a joint press conference with Defense Minister Ehud Barak in Washington.
"Syria and Iran are providing Hezbollah with so many rockets that they are at a point where they have more missiles than most governments in the world," said Gates.
Barak told reporters that Syria was transferring weapons systems to Hezbollah and that Israel is closely watching the developments, though he assured Israel did not plan to provoke a conflict.
The two also addressed the Iranian nuclear issue, and Barak warned that a nuclear Iran was a threat to the entire world.
"Iran turning nuclear is a threat both to Israel and any conceivable world order. It can change the landscape not only of the Middle East," he said.
Barak said the world cannot afford to wait too long to see if Iran backs down on its nuclear program and that he supports the U.S. focus on tougher economic sanctions against Tehran.
"If the international community waits too long, Iran could acquire a nuclear weapon that would change the landscape, and not just of the Middle East," Barak said.
He added, however, that only time will tell to what extent sanctions are effective in persuading Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions.
Barak also voiced support for the U.S. strategy on Iran, which is focused for now on curbing Iran's nuclear program using diplomacy and sanctions, rather than military action.
"The time is clearly, at this stage, the time for sanctions and diplomacy," Barak said.
Gates echoed the defense minister's statements and said that "U.S. defense relationship with Israel is stronger than ever," and added that the two countries "share many of the similar security challenges."
Gates also referred to the U.S. action regarding Iran and said he was satisfied with Pentagon planning to counter the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program.
"I'm very satisfied with the planning process both within this building and in the inter-agency. We spend a lot of time on Iran and we'll continue to do so," Gates said.

Since Feb. 26, Washington has summoned the Syrian ambassador... four times. Today, Lebanese President Michel Sleiman met with a senior US National Security and Counter-terrorism advisor. US ambassador to Lebanon Michele Sison also attended the meeting... which US officials described only as a discourse on 'regional developments'. Yeah well, there's no doubt Syrian missile transfer was discussed. So is Assad Jr. feeling the pressure... because Syria must be getting the message. Maybe the problem is... they feels no urgency to listen.
Did they start any issues in the summer of 2006 when they ambushed Israeli soldiers on Israeli soil who were just patrolling the border?
the rest of the world combined.
As long as Israel does not attack then Hebollah can spend as much money as they want on weapons. The key here is that Lebanon does not attack either. Then we basically have a military standoff so that Israelis and Lebanese can go about their lives in peace. Works for me.
It was Hezbollah which attacked Israel in 2006 when they crossed the border and killed 8 Israeli soldiers, returning to Lebanon with the dead bodies of two of them. If not for Hezbollah, Lebanon would be a much safer place to live.
How many Nuclear weapons does Israel have? Shhhh. They have 300, but don't tell anybody. It is a secret!
I'm happy that Hizballah was able to obtain enough rockets and weapons. They won't start any issues but it's good so now Israel will think twice befor attacking other countries.
And given Israel's propensity for violence, they will surely need them.
Neither has punishing everyone in Gaza. Let us all remember there WAS NO HISBOLLAH until Ariel Sharon decided to Invade Lebanon, drive to Beirut and install a Phelangist government to 'remake the political map of the mideast." Hisbollah remained a despised 'outside' power in Lebanon until Olmert tried to prove his manhood by his Second Lebanon War. Now Hisbollah is secure and a major player in Lebanese politics. Israel might consider why it's 'brilliant' politicians keep delivering failures that make things worse instead of better.
Well, Israel has the reason to destroy Lebanon. The government has given Hezbulla all the privileges to protect the south with rockets and scuds from Syria and Iran, Hariri has put Hezbulla in the front to protect Lebanon. Israel should not wait for Iran to have the A-bomb to use it to defend Hezbulla. Things getting a little harder to imagine for Israel and how to resolve all together. PA is taking harder line while watching Hezbulla and Hamas arming to the teeth and Iran scaring the west.
