Egypt denies calling Israel an 'enemy state'

Israeli envoy to Cairo protested Egypt FM's statement in which he reportedly dubbed Israel 'the enemy.'

By Barak Ravid Tags: Hezbollah Lebanon Israel news

Israel's ambassador to Cairo, Yitzhak Levanon, protested on Monday the statement of Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit in which he called Israel an "enemy state."

Levanon filed an official complaint to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Monday following the reports, and emphasized that Israel strongly condemns Aboul Gheit's statement.

Over the last few days, Arab media has reported that Aboul Gheit was asked during a visit to Beirut if he had any messages to relay from Israel regarding reports that Syria transferred Scud missiles to Hezbollah. The Egyptian Minister reportedly answered that his country does not relay messages from "the enemy."

The director of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stressed that Aboul Gheit was misunderstood, and that he meant to say that he could not relay messages from Israel to Lebanon because Lebanon sees Israel as an enemy state.

This week, Aboul Gheit met with his French and Spanish counterparts in Luxemborg to discuss concern over a possible Israeli attack on Lebanon in the wake of reports on the Scud transfer.

The three ministers agreed that Israel must be stopped from opening a new war with Lebanon, diplomats told the Lebanese A-Nahar daily. According to the sources, the ministers also discussed ways to guard Lebanon in case Israel or any other country decided to attack Iran's nuclear facilities.

Aboul Gheit's initiative in Lebanon comes days after his visit to Beirut over the weekend, where dismissed as "laughable lies" allegations that Syria transferred Scuds to Hezbollah.

Lebanon's army commander Jean Kahwaji told Gheit during a weekend meeting that he was convinced there are no scud missiles in the country, as it would be possible to bring Scuds across the Lebanese border undetected.

He also said Israel could launch a war at any moment, but added that "the indications until this hour point to no war in the foreseeable future. There are no reasons that require a war and the south is completely quiet".

Meanwhile, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said Tuesday that his country was not interested in war with Israel, but was prepared to defend itself if attacked.

Suleiman told reporters in Rio de Janeiro that Israel was sounding threats in Lebanon's direction including reports of Syria arming Hezbollah with Scud missiles - in order to divert attention from stalled peace talks.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman greeted by Rio de Janeiro Governor Sergio Cabral on Monday.

It is good that Israel realizes the truth that Egypt is Israel's enemy and always has been. Lebanon and Syria are also enemies of Israel and only when these nations surrender unconditionally to Israel will there be peace. Egypt is an "enemy state", it is clear to all of us but good to be reminded.

A lot of rhetoric and b*l*ocks has come from this claim that scuds are being given to hezbollah yet in this day and age when israel completely ignore arispaces rules of other countries that not one photo clearly showing a scud, it's location nor nutters using/playing with them suggests to me that this is a red herring designed to distract from the real story - Gaza. Show me proof and then i'll believe you.

Egypt is no friend of the Palestinians either. After all, they maintain the Gaza siege the same way Israel does. But you are correct (for the first time in your life) about Egypt's attitude towards Israel. But can you blame them? All nations, not just Egypt, make decisions to bolster their own interests. Nothing wrong with that. I'd have more respect for your opinions if you weren't the admitted antisemite that you are. Having beefs against Israel is fine, but you may as well walk around with a swastika on your arm. Do you? :)

Lebanon, has all the right to defend against israel. Nasrallah, who is more truthful than any of the israeli leaders, said he will not launch an attack but will only defend against one. So why does israel have a problem with Lebanon defending itself? Because israel wants to be able to attack with free will and no consequences. Wake up. The Cedars are not your playground.

Egypt made peace with Israel to (1) get the Israelis out of the Sinai, (2) get an annual allowance from America, and (3) stabilize conditions in Egypt. If Egypt could destroy all of Israel overnight, they would do it just as quickly as Iran or Syria. Egypt tries to keep Israel happy for the same reason Israel tries to keep America happy. Self interest.

Why do so many people refuse to acknowledge what the overwhelming facts prove: that Lebanon is not an independent country but merely a de facto province of Iran, and its the mullahs in Tehran who decide whether war erupts at Israel's northern border. The Lebanese government and army is very little more than for show.

    • 16:48

Well...Lebanon knows very well that if he keeps peace-loving Hezbollah quiet, there will be no problems with Israel....the same way Arafat knew very well that if he had kept his freedom fighters, that took south Lebanon by storm after they were kick out of Jordan in the early 1980s and constantly shelled Israeli towns ( the civilian population ) from South Lebanon,... Israel wouldn't have entered South Lebanon to remove the PLO ( to prevent the attacks from Lebanese territory )....the same way Hamas knows that if it keeps the missiles quiet, there won't be any response from Israel. If there has been no major problems lately between Lebanon and Israel , it is because Hezbollah has been keeping quiet as well... Lebanon does not need to vow to defend itself against any Israel attack if it keeps quiet. Those comments from Lebanon are more cynical than irresponsible.

The import of the ministers of French, Spain and Egypt to safe guard Lebanon should Iran's nuclear capabilities be attacked is a condition that should be carefully explored. Is Lebanon such a bootheel state that it can not act independently of Iran's direction? Egypt, Spain and France might better worry about how to wean Lebanon from the bosom of Tehran and it's anti-semitic dictator than worry about taking or demonstrating Iranian protectionist intent. In the latter respect how important is Iranian oil futures to them?

Boy have you got your facts twisted! If you check the facts, Israel NEVER started any of the mid-east conflicts dating back to 1948 when Israel became a state and was immediately attacked by 7 Arab armies. In 1967, Nasser proclaimed he would "drive the Jews into the sea" In 1973, Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur. The recent conflicts with Gaza (for 8 years of rocket attacks against innocent civilians, and the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers) provoked appropriate action on the part of the IDF. Israel is not going to sit back and take it, or be "politcally correct". If Arab terrorists decide to attack Israel, they will pay a heavy price.

The last thing Israel wants is another war with Lebanon or its Hezbollah "guests". What did you expect Israel to do after Hezbollah kidnapped Israeli soldiers, drop a few bombs and call it a day? No. They went after the terrorist cancer to teach them a lesson once and for all as they did in Gaza to put an end to the rocket attacks fired indiscriminately on innocent civilians. These scumbags have no respect for human life (including their own) and Israel is the only country which is prepared to stand up to these idiots instead of being "politically correct" like the rest of the world.

    • 15:35

Israel's next war will not be a walk in the park for israel. If started by israel unprokoved, it will indicate that israel is preparing for a wider conflict. Of course, Iran will be the end game. Israel can not attack Iran before attacking Lebanon. This will be the begining of WWIII for sure. It will involve Israel, Syrian, Lebanon directly and Iran Turkey indirectly. This will only be the begining.Hormuz will be blocked by Iran, oil prices will hit the roof. This war if it happens will not last a month or two, it will be carried for few years. Israel's population is vulnerable to major distructions. Iran will use its ballistic power. The u.S.will retaliate. This will create havoc in Iraq and Afghanistan and will make my country's life miserable. So israel should think twice before the next adventure. The best solution is for Netanyahu to resign now and the Kadima form a new government with peace in mind.

If syria hasn't went public about its full support to lebanon incase of "potential" Israeli aggression to lebanon, we would have already witnessed a war. Israel is aware of Syria's relationship to Turkey and Syria's defense treaty with Iran. It would be very stupid from Israel to launch a war against Lebanon or Syria. The next war be a real war, a devestating war for everyone.

Its clear that Israel cannot WIN a war against Hezbollah or Lebanon. They can cause serious human and inrastructure damage and now so can the Lebanese / Hizballah. A war is only good IF there is a significant change in the status quo thereafter. Although there was a slight change after the 2006 war (UNIFIL) this is certainly not a game changer. So all those Israeli and Lebanese civilians in that war, died in vain. If another war erupts there is no reason to believe that anything major will change except more human lives lost!!! Is Israel able and ready, with the support of the international community to once and for all defeat and get rid of hezbollah - I seriously doubt NOT. SO whats the point of another war???

Lets keep it real if Lebanon and all those blah blah blah people here in the forum think that by arming Lebanon and allowing Lebanese territory to be used to attack Israel with rockets be it conventional, chemical or biological one brings peace one step closer one is mistaken. Israel and the Jewish people have had it with the warmongering terrorists in the Arab and Muslim world and those anti semites in the rest of the world. Any military action or provocation by Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria or Iran should be and will be answered by strong force and if these scuds hit our civilian areas we need to retaliate by bombing their civilian areas in order to make sure they know that the price of war and terror is too high. The Arab League can choose soon war or peace, if it wants war we as Jews in Israel are ready for it and we will show no mercy this time for our enemies.

Obviously Hezbollah's cross-border aggression started the ball rolling, but Israel could have chosen, as before to mount a limited retaliation to a limited incursion. That's what Nasrallah was expecting. Instead it chose to launch an all-out war, that it had pre-planned before, in order to punish the Lebanese people for allowing Hezbollah to operate on their territory. It was hugely disproportionate to the original offence, in the amount of damage it did to Lebanese civilian infrastrucire and the number of Lebanese civilians it killed and it started the drift towards international pariah status for Israel that Cast Lead accelerated. Frankly, Lebanon has every reason to feel nervous that Bibi's loser government will try to start a war to deflect attanetion from its failures, and Lebanon has every right to get ready to defend itself if that happens.

I'd hate to say it, but I think that Lebanon needs those scuds, and anything else they can get their hands on, to make sure that Israel knows that any attack on Lebanon is going to cost them - and I actually despise Hezbollah. And before we start hearing about how Lebanon is a proxy of Iran (blah blah blah), don't forget which of the two nations (Lebanon and Israel) voted in an extreme government - not Lebanon.
