Barak: If Iran sanctions don't work, military action must be considered
Defense minister says confronting a nuclear Iran would be much more dangerous, and would cost many more lives, than confronting the country today.
By Haaretz Tags: Ehud Barak Iran Iran nuclearDefense Minister Ehud Barak said on Thursday that if sanctions on Iran's nuclear program do not prove effective, then military action against the Islamic Republic must be considered.
"Today, unlike in the past, there is widespread international belief that it is vital to prevent Iran from becoming 'nuclear' and that no option should be taken off the table," Barak said at the closing day of the Herzliya Conference.

"Should sanctions fail to stop Iran's nuclear program, there will be a need to consider taking action," he said.
He noted that many analysts believe that confronting a nuclear Iran will be much more complicated and dangerous, and will cost many more lives, than taking action today.
"Whoever says 'later', could find that it is too late," he stressed.
Barak added that Israel's challenge is to continue aiding the international community to work toward halting Iran's nuclear program, "without taking any option off the table."
Earlier Thursday, Vice Prime Minister Moshe Ya'alon said that all of Iran's nuclear facilities are vulnerable to a military strike, adding that the specter of a nuclear Iran would be a "nightmare to the free world."
Ya'alon also indicated that an explosion which virtually destroyed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard missile base near Tehran late last year targeted a system that was "preparing to produce a missile with a range of 10,000 kilometers, thus threatening the United States."

iran is not a major military power. iran's strength is its assymetrical terror weapons, mainly made up of smaller boats and hundreds of thousands of missiles. however, iran does not have an airforce or a navy that can project power. this would all change once iran gets nuclear weapons.
Why bother with just striking the nuclear sites ? Why not alert the mullahs and Ama-nut job they are targeted and take them out, then the people of Iran will rise up....hopefully the Muslim Obama will be out of office and the USA can also help by finishing off the revolutionary guard, when we all are finished, lets take a detour and finish off Assad as well !!!
but decisively undertaken before it's too late
present day iran is led by terrorists with hegemonistic aspirations. the leaders of this terror regime have stated on numerous occasions that their ultimate goal is the destruction of the jewish state of israel. this holocaust denying regime, which has in the past blown up innocent jewish people in argentina, and which arms likeminded proxies hezbollah, hamas, with tens of thousands of missiles, cannot be allowed to have atomic bombs. the terror regime of iran had first introduced itself to the world by occupying the american embassy in tehran and taking hostage its staff. this regime has violated every law known to the international community of nations. it has gone beyond its borders to murder, kidnapp, blow up. the shia terror entity has violated the sovereignty of numerous nations with the sole aim of exporting its vile revolutionary apocaliptic vision and imposing it on other peoples.
their threat and total disrespect for norms and international law is a threat to world peace.
sounds reasonable .very much hope it want be needed
Iran is no more a threat to America that Iraq was. Israel if you want war, just do it, all by yourself, and deal with the consequences. Stop manipulating America to fight another war on your behalf.
2012 its the israeli threat.
From Power! War Mongerer!!!!!!!!!!!
The IAEA and America's own National Intelligence Estimate all agree there's no evidence Iran has a nuclear weapons program. So all this talk and sanctions are just designed to create legitimacy for Israel to attack Iran anyway. And why does Israel want to attack Iran? Because Israel wants all the Occupied land, and Iran supports Hamas and Hizbollah, which stand in the way. That's all. There's nothing more to it, and Barak knows it. What I find remarkable is how Barak, Bibi, and the rest apparently think we Americans are so stupid we can't figure out this transparent truth. Keep pushing, Israel: you'll loose your American support base over this one.
We are going through a similar phase leading to the Iran war. Such a war is envisioned to be fought by America along with some reluctant EU allies. If you look close you can see various Israelis placing their fingerprints on the proceedings. Fingerprints is all you will see of Israel once the war starts.
Israel will contemplate two options concerning Iran. The first option is by far the best. Israel will push for an American attack on Iran before the end of the year. This would get rid of Iran as a nuclear threat to Israel. It would also occupy the minds of Americans for many years, causing them to lose interest in settlements and blockades and such. It will also firmly cement Islam as an enemy in the eyes of Americans. Such a war would also cause America to throw a lot of extra money at Israel during the hostilities. As an added bonus, it would be the end of Obama as he would likely lose the election. It makes me drool just looking at the list of benefits and I am not even an israeli Jew. I can't imagine their joy if this option comes to pass. Option two is riskier and not nearly as good. This calls for Israel to attack Iran, triggering Iran to respond and hopefully drawing America into a war with Iran. If executed properly, it can work out as well as option one, but there is a small chance that this would backfire on Israel, alienating the world, including America and most especially the American people. They are not as stupid as Israel's leaders think they are.
There are many options for dealing with Iran's potential for developing nuclear weapons that could be delivered on a missile. Not included is waiting until too late. The immediate option of strong sanctions is not good enough. Iran will just tough it out. Here are some immediated additional options. Destroy its oil wells and ability to ship oil. Destroy its ability to receive shipments of gasoline, Start destroying its nuclear capability in order to increase the time before it will have nuclear weapons. Assasinate some of its nuclear scientists if possible. They are soldiers in the battle have no doubt. Kill Ahmadinejad with a drone or in any case make it known he is on theUShit list. Make a demonstration of a thermonuclear weapon in an unhabitated part of Iran.
Israeli fear of Iran is going to cause a world-wide recession.
Netanyahu and Barak keep harping on the threat of Israel bombing Iran, while everybody with a bit of brain can see that this is essentially a terrible idea for Israel, "the stupidest thing I have ever heard" it was called by M. Dagan, who headed Mossad until late 2010. A bombing will merely cause some delay in Iran's plans, but will have terrible long term consequences for Israel because of certain retaliation and hatred that will last many many years. Too bad that bombing Iran is the only idea Netanyahu has of improving Israel's position, and stopping Iran is what he ran on in the 2009 elections, to say nothing of how the US will react when it is attacked by Iran in retaliation. Barak is too smart for such stupidity, and I suspect this is his way of keeping Netanyahu interested in him as Defense Minister and, more importantly for him, as a Likud member to be. At worst, he uses the bombing threat as a bluff (which obviously does not deter Iran). Unfortunately, and dangerously, Netanyahu is dead serious in his threat, and Dagan knows it or else he would NOT have spoken out. It was disclosed by Wikileaks that Netanyahu was willing to join the Olmert government in 2007 (after Olmert destroyed himself in Lebanon) provided that Olmert will bomb Iran. I shudder to think of the consequences.
Go and do it all alone. Never cry to mammy America to rescue you.
America, along with every nation in the EU has criticized and condemned Israel's settlement enterprise. Israel has found it easy to ignore these protests, since the complainers have never contemplated actions. In fact, they have not even contemplated curtailing the rivers of free money which they pour into Israel. Iran and Turkey are thre only nations not to avert their eyes from Israeli misbehavior. This makes them Israel's greatest enemies at the moment, just as Iraq was not so long ago. As with Iraq, Israel will beat the drum for an American attack first on Iran. After this, Israel will see what can be done about Turkey.
The day will come when Israel will not only brandish the nuclear sword, but launch it as well. If the Iranian facilities are destroyed today, do you thing the Moslem world will give up in its desire for nuclear equality?
rattling their sabres all for deflecting attention from the Palestinian issue.
