Arab states: Israel's nuclear program is destabilizing Mideast

World must strive harder toward a nuclear-free Mideast, Jordan FM says at second day of UN nuclear conference.

By The Associated Press Tags: Israel news Israel nuclear Iran nuclear UN

Arab countries sought to turn attention Tuesday to Israel as delegates from 189 countries debated how to stem the spread of nuclear weapons.

On the second day of the month-long meeting at the United Nations, Arab countries were reiterating calls for a nuclear-free Middle East with criticism of Israel's unacknowledged nuclear arsenal and failure to sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT).

The first day of the conference was dominated by rhetorical crossfire between the United States and Iran, as Washington pushed for the UN Security Council to approve new sanctions against Iran.

On Tuesday, Jordan's Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh expressed frustration at the lack of progress on implementing a nuclear-free Middle East, a goal that was declared in a resolution of a previous meeting of NPT signatories

He said that Israel's failure to sign the NPT and allow international monitoring of its nuclear program renders the NPT a source of instability in the Middle East.

Egypt has proposed that this 2010 NPT conference back a plan calling for the start of negotiations next year on such a Mideast zone. The proposal may become a major debating point in the month-long session.

The United States has cautiously supported the idea while saying that implementing the idea must wait for progress in the Middle East peace process.

The position reflected a middle ground as the Obama administration sought to satisfy Arab countries while keeping the spotlight of the conference on Iran's nuclear program.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continued his campaign to stall the U.S. push for new sanctions. He scheduled a news conference Tuesday afternoon. On Monday, addressing the conference, he rejected the U.S. allegations about Iran's nuclear program, saying Washington has offered not a single credible proof that Iran was seeking nuclear weapons. Iran says it only wants the technology for producing nuclear power.

The debate about Iran dominated the first day of the month-long conference on how to improve the NPT. The treaty is formally reviewed every five years at a meeting of treaty members - all the world's nations except India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea, all of which either have confirmed or are believed to have nuclear weapons.

The review conference is meant to produce a final document pointing toward ways to better achieve the NPT's goals of checking the spread of nuclear weapons, while working toward reducing and eventually eliminating them.

Because it requires a consensus of all parties, including Iran, any final document would be highly unlikely to censure the Tehran government, which would block consensus.

U.S. officials have said they will be looking to isolate Iran at the conference and to produce an unofficial document calling for stricter enforcement of the NPT that could be signed by the overwhelming majority of signatory countries.

As delegates assess the state of the NPT in UN conference halls, American and European diplomats will be working elsewhere to reach agreement with the sometimes reluctant China and Russia on a fourth round of UN Security Council economic sanctions against Iran.

It is obviously comfortable being in the company of non-cooperative nuclear nations like N.Korea, Pakistan, and India which also are NOT members of the NPT. All this while Iran IS a member of the NPT. Israel's possession of over 200 nuclear warheads is erily similar to suicide bombers, because they will blow the Holyland to high hell before relinquishing ANY of it to anyone...Let alone trying disarm this crazed nuclear state's END GAME SCENARIO...Talk about EXTREMISM. Dr. Strangelove would be PROUD!

Superb! By your criteria, the ME crisis is solved. Apparently you know nothing of the two US endorsed peace offers made by the Arab League. The first was introduced by then Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah at the Arab League Summit in March 2002, and was adopted. It was reaffirmed by the Arab League at its Riyadh Summit in March 2007. It recognizes Israel and calls for comprehensive peace and full normal relations between Israel and all 22 Arab states, which includes Palestine, in return for Israel’s withdrawal from all the Arab territories it occupied in June 1967 war, a just and agreed upon solution to the Palestinian refugee question and the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. The offer was later adopted by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (O.I.C) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in April 2002. The O.I.C is an intra-governmental organization composed of the 57 states that comprise the Muslim world. Israel didn't respond.

Why would Iran get rid of any power with such hostile neigbors. They should worry about Israel. Iran is the only one of the two countries that has never waged an offensive war. Six Day War, Lebanon, bombings of nuclear reactors. Israel ALREADY has nukes. If Iran did anything same towards any of it's neighbors it would be condemned worldwide, as it should be. Israel, on the other hand "defends itself" and does "pre-emptive strikes", due to it's history with hostility from Arab nations. Well, U.S. and Israel overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran and supported the reign of the Shah and SAVAK, responsible of the imprisoment, torture and deaths of thousands of Iranians. The region has been exploited by the West for decades for oil. Does this painful history excuse Iran's actions now? No. Both Israel and Iran are belligerent nations dangerous to the region, who oppress millions of people on a daily basis. Either condemn both or stay silent. Hypocrisy helps nobody.

There is no difference between orthodox jews and religious arabs like mullahs. They all are against pork, gays, ... and so on... Thank god, the very religious jews are not in power in israel. Well they have power but not so much at the moment.... thanks to america... So it is not only arab hate. Religious hate each other. Doesnt matter jews, or arabs... Because of that israel is destabilzing the region with nuclear weapons. The hate will stay on both sides... to release people from the hate, israel has to attend the meeting and sign the paper for not developing any nuclear weapons. This will build trust and hate will slowly disappear...

Osama - sorry friend but saying that Israel has "killed every creature living on the land", and that the problem would disappear if Israel would "leave the Palestinians alone" is just plain wrong. Where is the Palestinian responsibility? Where are Egypt's and Jordan's? As long as people keep trying to blame Israel for all the problems that have beset the ME, the problem will continue. Ibrahim - no interest in being crusty at all, but the Arab peace plan has been rejected because of the issues of Jerusalem and more importantly, the right of return. A peace plan that eliminates Israel will never be acceptable no matter how many times people point to the Arab proposal that is built on nonstarters. So what is there are Rabbis in America spewing hate. There are Rabbis everywhere who do not as well. That is not the issue at all, cousin, and I have many friends throughout the world of all religions (including many Muslims from ME countries) who are sick and tired of Arab hate. Both sides must give to get - it is not just up to Israel.

We should distinguish Arabs from Arab states because there is a difference between an individual Arab and her government. All of the Arab states in Israel vicinity are ruled by dictators, monarchs or by strong fundamentalist undercurrents (Hamasin Gaza, Hez in Lebanon). Making peace with my friend the Arab is not the same challenge as making peace with a government that needs an external enemy to keep its people preoccupied with what is going outside the country.

Anti-Jewish/Anti-Israeli sentiment is running rampant these days. The only stable element in the Middle East IS ISRAEL. The not so clever plan to de-legitimize and destabilize Israel is fostered by the 22 surrounding Arab dictatorships and Monarchies that have but one goal....NO ISRAEL. The inroad to that is to call on the no-nuke community to declaw Israel's ability to mount a viable self-defense and to remove the teeth from the bite that may be present from a potential nuclear response from Israel if they were so threatened so as to think their end was imminent. As long as Israel has nukes, the stasis remains, and Islam cannot fully "reclaim" or "dominate" what they believe to be theirs. Israel's nuclear capacities were enabled by the USA and France, as Western coalition allies with a stable base in the armpit of humanity. Obama's arrival has changed all that along with the PLO and Hamas charters for Israel's elimination. But, as long as Israel remains and keeps their deterrent, such nations as Iran and Syria will not be able to dominate the seens, thankfully. We don't need a revisiting of the dark ages on the Middle East.

Yes, the Saud plan, that was turned into Swiss cheese at the A/L meeting in Lebanon. The Saud plan that essentially is no better than a maifoso order to give the Arabs everything they want, with the possability of maybe thinking about some sort of peace agreement, but nothing too close, with Israel. . The reality is, when the plan was presented, then Israeli PM Ariel Sharon asked to meet King Abduallah of Saud to discuss the plan directly. . Unfortunately, the Sauds ran in the other direction and appear to have kept running. . Meanwhile, Syria's Assad has reitereated that even if he gets every last inch of the Golan, there is absolutely no way that Israel will experience "normalized" peaceful relations with Syria. Beyond that, HAMAS and Hizballah cling to the maxim that the only Jewish state will be a dead one. So much for the "peace" part of the peace plan. . As for your "Jewish" friends and supposed rabbi's, I remain unimpressed. Let's take a look at the facts on the ground. 20% of Israel's population is Arab in a state where they can be elected to any position in the government. Contrast that with an Arab world that has been essentially ethnically cleansed of its Jewish population, with Yemen being the latest.

Actually I think it will take much of generosity and good will on both sides to make peace possible. The war has already went on for much too long, and it had started to work on peoples' minds. What is needed now is just a way out of it, and, say, 20 years of real peace.

I have never heard a Rabbi or any Jew talk about any gentiles in synagogue in my 61 years as it is forbiden. We're not even allowed to mention someone is a convert in to our religion. You are a slandered by inference and inuendo which is why Jews and Arabs like you can never be friends. Written with a very straight face.

Jews are the real resource and the power of their G-d; it gives the illusion to Arabs that if only they lived on that land they, too, would be a material success. They have lived on the land and it has become desolate, a wasteland by over grazing with goats from Moroco to Pakistan. When the last King of Jordan died, he released the land titles taken in 1967 from the Registrar/Recorder's office in Jerusalem and it demonstrated the Pals own very little land at all. Big lie is being put forth my the Arabs to overcome this obsticle becasue UNR 181 gives the empty land to the Jews.

There is more hatred and antisemitism by so-called Israel "supporters" than all other groups of participants combined; it's not even a contest. I do not think the average reader here knows just how hard you have to dig to actually find any of this "Arab" or "Muslim" "hate" of Jews. It is there, but you really have to dig down very deeply to find it, and you sure won't find it in comments say at Lebanon's Daily Star. But go to almost any, if not all, right wing, or Israeli Web sites, or places like the tea baggers in the US hang out, and those comments are dripping with anti-Arab and Muslim venom and hatred and woe to any Jew who dare question them. They then are turned on, called terrorist lovers, and self-hating, and traitorous, and even worse. From a regular Joe to Richard Goldstone, it's all the same. SSDD ;-)

to the Arab peace plan, that is similar to Israels peace plan, that tells the palestinians to go live elsewhere, where they will no longer suffer so much and where they can live in peace
