Americans for Peace Now to Obama: Extend settlement freeze

Ahead of PM Netanyahu's White House meeting with U.S. President Obama, Americans for Peace Now deliver petition to Obama with nearly 16,000 signatures calling for extension of settlement freeze.

Americans for Peace Now delivered a petition to U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday, calling on him to press Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to extend the freeze on Jewish settlement construction in the West Bank, set to expire in late September.

The petition, with 15,962 signatures, arrived ahead of a meeting between Obama and Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday.

"These thousands of voices are expressing what we all know: Peace for Israel is more important than settlement expansion. American leadership toward a two-state solution is essential, and Israel's future depends on reaching such a solution," APN's president and CEO Debra DeLee said.

Last November, Netanyahu declared a 10-month freeze in settlement construction. The upcoming expiration of the freeze is expected to be an issue discussed during Tuesday's meeting between Obama and Netanyahu at the White House.

#6 What an impressive and elusive bit of rambling, Mark - amazing how you manage to say so much about the issue without actually doing so - but the bottom line is that Israel's continued settlement expansion belies its total lack of any intention for a peace settlement.

It always has. Also, you might try MORE than just a "cursory review" of the region's [zionist version of] history to avoid the appearance of being a 'parrot'. By the way, doing so will enlighten you to the fact that 'organized' terrorism was first introduced to the world by Zionist militias - NOT the Palestinians or the Arabs - although they HAVE fine-tuned its methods to adapt to their more limited means.

If America wants peace in the mideast, why do they insist on burdening Israel with another three billion dollars worth of weapons ecery year. Give an Israeli a weapon and he will use it.

Zecharia 12:3 "On that day I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the nations - All who burden themselves with it will be severly cut..." Obama tells Israel: "don't build", Ayers sends a flotilla, Obama puts Israel on trial, and says the blockade is "not sustainable". If this snake continues, I don't see why the gulf oil spill should get better. http://www.gokoogle.com/newsdetail.php?id=109

The question of freezing settlement construction as a reflection of Netanyahu's personality
    • Logios
    • 06.07.10

This issue is particularly revealing of elements in netanyahu's personality. First, a basic principle. If you are discussing with another side sharing the land (or a pizza), it cannot be done while one party keeps devouring the land (or pizza). So a freeze is obviously a necessary condition for peace talks. If Netanyahu did not think of this ahead of time, he should have gotten a clue from the fact that the Roadmap included a freeze in the FIRST phase. Also, the Palestinians insisted on it, and the US agreed. All this is basic. What decision did the Netanyahu government take? 1. The freeze applies to outside the current line of buildings, not to building WITHIN the currently built area. 2. The freeze will last for only 10 months. 3. The freeze will not be renewed. What do these elements indicate? 1. This element shows that Netanyahu has some reality, and understands that a territorial exchange is acceptable to the Palestinians, so he takes advantage of it. The two other points are clearly unreal. Was it conceivable that the talks will be concluded in only 10 months? Would the Palestinians and the US even conceive of talking peace with no freezing? I think Netanyahu has enough reality to realize that, but since he was dealing with his right winger partners Lieberman and most of Likud members, he decided to deceive them for now, present a nicer picture, and when the time comes he would try to wiggle out of it. All this shows Netanyahu as a creature of pressure; when pressured he acts, many times deceptively. Ultimately, he is not a courageous leader. He did not fight out the good fight then. Now he will pay some extra political cost for cheating.

Look, it's all cold out here, after 62 minutes and the pizza's freezing. The other guy doesn't want to talk to me because my sons get shot by his enemy brother (or flotilla). And now what? No one eats the pizza? But I'm a developed adult (or country) and have more needs (or population) as time passes!

The other guy wants that we cut the pizza in two and he'll take one half while he'll lick the other half with refugees so that I don't eat it. I smell the scam and refuse. Now the pizza is freezing, should I not eat a few percents of it? It's not like we're taking the whole land, it's just tiny cities...

Settlements and Settler Harrassment of Palestinians Must Stop

Israel needs to apply the rule of law to settlers that attack Palestinians. Settlements must stop if there ever is to be an independent, contiguous Palestine. Anything less is acceding to Israeli zealots that have no vision or commitment to a peace process.

Settlements only a convenient excuse for Arabs
    • Mark from Georgia
    • 06.07.10

The Palestinians have resisted peace and called for war against Israel since the rebirth of Israel. Now settlements are used as the latest excuse but it's simply propaganda. After all even a cursory review of the area history shows this to be a fact. Before Israel was declared a nation every attempt was made to prevent this from occurring using the same terrorist tactics used today. After Israel's rebirth from 1948- 1967 Jordan controlled the West B and Gaza was under Egyptian control, again the same terrorism was used to destroy Israel, and there were NO SETTLEMENTS. Now the Arabs would have us believe it's the settlements. But what about the terrorism still directed at Israel? Rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza, suicide bombings from the W.B., the indoctrination of Arab children to hate Israel and the teaching of anti semitism? Don't these pose a far greater threat to the peace process? Since 1967 Israel has given back over 95% of the land won in the Six Day War, shrinking Israel by more than 50%. So Israel has shrunk in size, NOT expanded in the last 43 years, yet the Pals still refuse direct talks with Israel and are involved in a civil war between Hamas and Fatah that has taken over 1400 Palestinian lives, many of them woman and children. Who is Israel to make peace with? Hamas or Fatah? No folks the settlements are the least of the challenges facing Israel when the Palestinians themselves cannot even decide on their leadership.

Thre is no way international opinion could understand the pain Israel causes to Palestinian people, and politics all over the world seem to begin to understand it. Bombs on Sdorot must certenly be condemmed, but also construction in the West Bank. The former is not justification for the second. There is a wrong rationality in that argument.

Numerous other Jewish peace organisations, ie. J Street, NIF, Meretz, Jewish Voice for Peace have called upon the Obama administration to urge a continuation of the temporary freez, prbably until the end of the year. But netanyahu is slick and has his colation of right wing crazed religious racists to think about. His government could come apart, so he has his own domestic concerns. netanyahu is also a master of saying one thing and doing another. The US will think it and netanyahu are on teh same page but will soon see after his return to that Israel hellhole of coalition politics that his actions belie his words. Expansionism will be termed "natural growth", that usual kind of trickery at which he is a master.

Oh yes, yaakov sullivan, we know you believe that Netanyahu (lower and upper case are so much fun, am I doing it right, yaakov?) answers to "right wing crazed religious racists" who are lurking in the background. However, what of left wing crazed religious racists? You know, yaakov, those whose hatred of Israel has become their religion, those for whom hatred of Israel gives meaning to their lives. These left wing crazed religious racists are true masters of trickery.
