Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday he wanted progress in indirect peace talks with Israel before any move to face-to-face talks, which the United States wants the two sides to begin.

U.S. President Barack Obama urged the two sides this week to resume direct talks by September. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who met Obama in Washington on Tuesday, says he wants to negotiate directly with Abbas.
But Abbas faces heavy domestic criticism over the failure of past negotiations and is wary of agreeing to more direct talks with Netanyahu's right-wing government.
Speaking in Ramallah, Abbas reiterated the Palestinian demand for progress in the indirect "proximity" talks, being mediated by U.S. envoy to the region George Mitchell, before any move to direct negotiations.
The indirect talks have been under way for two months.
"We said that if there is progress we will go to direct talks. If no progress happens, what is the benefit of negotiations that will be futile and useless," he said.
The Palestinian president spoke Saturday at a religious event marking the ascension to heaven of the Prophet Mohammed.
Abbas said the Palestinians wanted the indirect talks to make progress on two issues: security arrangements and the borders of the state the Palestinians aim to establish in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.
"We are still hoping to realize success that will allow us to launch serious negotiations leading to peace," said Abbas, who spoke to Obama by phone on Friday.
The White House said the leaders "reviewed ways to advance to direct talks in the near term".
Abbas said Israel must stop building settlements on Palestinian land in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and remove the Jewish enclaves under a final peace deal. He did not repeat his previous demand for a complete halt to settlement building as a condition for direct peace talks.
The Palestinians say the settlements, which pepper the West Bank, will make it impossible to establish a viable Palestinian state alongside Israel - the outcome envisaged by major powers.
Netanyahu signaled on Thursday he would not extend beyond September a 10-month moratorium on new home building in West Bank settlements. He said this week he was prepared to discuss the future of the settlements "right away" if the Palestinians entered direct peace talks.

How long will the "Pals" (as some narrow-minded idiots call them, will be patient? Free them and talk with (not to!) them!
..... every time, during so many tens of years, they wanted more than what was offered, more than anything reasonable. Maybe they actually wanted all of Palestine back .... and throw us out.... whatever. It started from the 3 NO's, thru all rejections of peace by Arafat, to the present rejection by Abbas .... I am not even talking about Hamas .... So, what happened next? Well, In the times of Arafat, every rejection of what Israel offered was followed by terror. AND TERROR WAS FOLLOWED BY MORE SETTLEMENTS ! Again and again until there are now hundreds of thousands of settlers in the West Bank (except in Gaza which nobody wants) ..... So, and this is important, WHAT THE LEADERS OF THE TWO SIDES IN THE CONFLICT TALKED ABOUT, when they talked at all, HAD NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER ON WHAT WAS ACTUALLY HAPPENING IN THE FIELD ! What actually happened was like rain, after accumulation of clouds, ... that's all, unfortunately. And the cycle continues .....Rejection .... Settlements .... Occupation .... Terror ..... More occupation .... More terror .... Rockets ..... War .... Destruction .... Lots of dead ....More terror ..... More settlements ..... Flotillas .... Goldstones .....Misery ......Nuclear Bombs by Iran? And then? So, these are the results of Arafat, Meshal, Netanyahu, Lieberman, Religious, Erdogan, Ahmadinejad, Sharon, Likud, Hamas, Olmert, Hezbollah, etc.etc, etc, And Netanyahu takes advantage of this by bringing even more settlers there....Yet, I guess that now, with Obama in the picture too, there is one more chance for a Palestine State in the West Bank. In Gaza too if Hamas takes the peace on offer instead of its "resistance"....But do you see that happening? Neither do I.
You, Mahmoud Abbas, will be responsible for the Palestinians never having a state of their own. What wiol your own grandchildren think of you once they are mature? What will the rest of the Palestinians think of you, the man who brought about the collapse of the whole Palestinian enterprise? You will be a curse and a mockery to all generationsa of Palestinians for ages to come.
Netanyahus has extremists in his coalition and can't state publicly that settlements will cease. That is why he wants to move to direct negotiations with Abbas before the settlement freeze ends. He's definitely playing a juggling act. If his government falls, a new one will be set up and this will push the entire time table backwards and all bets will be off. Thats my take.
Abbas is an idiot. Its called negotiations. Does he really think Israel is going to give him everything he wants just to restart the talks? The stupidity of the Palestinians is shown in the stupidity of the leaders that choose.
The Israeli! Abbas is right, he has seen enough hot air and footdragging, latest from Netanyahu. As has the world!
After decades of failed peace talks, Obama is in a mighty hurry ro push the Palestinians. Of course, Bibi had to sign on to Obamas program, but Bibi doesn't plan to get within a country mile of a real peace talk. Abbas knows this. Why should the Palestinians once again play the straight man for Israels comedy capers. If Israel won't place an indefinite hold on settlement construction and if the indirect talks are fruitless, there is no reason for the Palestinians to agree to anything else. If they must wait for better men than Bibi and Obama, then so be it. It won't be the first time.
Yes we know you no Abbas fan, you supporter of Hamas, ( I hink state department should look in to your activities as Hamas is terrorist organitsation) Your friends never agreed to anything. They never recognised Israel's right to exist, they never followed with any agreements or promisses, On every gesture or offer from Israeli side we got suicide bombers, kidnappings and rockets.
Which is why she's not worth listening to.
Bibi says he wants talks. Abbas says he doesn't. Nutallie pretends it's the opposite.
I’m all for direct talks if the baseline is a fully sovereign contiguous Palestinian state in line with internationally recognized 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital. Minor adjustments can be worked out from there.
How will a Palestinian state be contiguous without chopping Israel in two? Also, since when are the 1949 ceasefire lines "internationally recognized borders"?
Bibi has pulled off a coup in the US. Congress like what he has said, With the midterms & later presidential elections Obama has been pushed into a corner but whilst not committing to anything Bibi has called for direct talks. Now if Abbas refuses to talk he is the bad guy and Obama has been pushed into a position where he can't take Abbas side anymore. Bibi will probably agree to make a concession in terms of an extension on a building freeze in Judea & Samaria, he can probably force Obama into accepting some kind of deal whereby providing he doesn't start pulling down hundreds of arab homes in the process the US will maybe say stop building but then turn a blind eye when the calls are ignored. If this works as planned Bibi certainly deserves congratulations for getting one over on the most anti Israel president the US has had in decades. Abbas has probably lost this round.
There is gonna be NO talks, You want War or is it you want peace or should I say piece the WHOLE piece of land called Cannan/Israel. Come on now make up your mind already.
