While violent incidents along the Israel-Gaza border have become less frequent since a three-week war in the Gaza Strip ended in January 2009, this most recent mortar launch came in the wake of two clashes between IDF troops and Gaza militants in the last month.
On Monday, Israeli troops killed a Palestinian militant on the border with the Gaza Strip after an exchange of fire in which an IDF tank commander was also lightly wounded.
Later on Monday, two Qassam rockets fired from Gaza struck open areas in the western Negev region, causing no casualties or damage.
According to the IDF, the dead Palestinian militant was Basem Da'ama, an Islamic Jihad field operative who had taken part in the exchange of fire in late March in which IDF soldiers Eliraz Peretz and Ilan Sviatkovsky were killed.
The exchange of fire began around 4 p.m. when soldiers from the IDF's Givati Brigade identified two Palestinian militants who were apparently planting an explosive device near the security fence in the southern Gaza Strip.
"The force opened fire at the suspects, one militant was killed," a military spokesman said.
Palestinian militants returned fire towards IDF troops and a tank commander was wounded lightly by shrapnel.
Militants said they had fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the IDF force during the exchange of fire.

What a piece of drek talkback site this is. Slow buggy and impossible to use. Nine times out of ten the "send" button does not work. Maybe its on ly like that for me because I am a supporter of Israel. I bet Tony Silver dies not have the same problems.
Haaretz does not put up your posts because it is pro-Israel and not pro-Palestinian, even when the post is written in a very respectful manner. Not like the posts they do allow, which are disgusting in their tones and show the true antisemitism in some of the posters.
I never get mine posted and I am pro-Palestinian! Who knows why Haaretz posts some and not others...
On Monday, Israeli troops killed a Palestinian militant on the border with the Gaza Strip after an exchange of fire in which an IDF tank commander was also lightly wounded. enough is enough!
They do what they can
Klab Yahud.
How can you talk to terrorists?
from the time of Begin, Rabin, Shamir and Peres to Livni, Netanyahu and Barak, Israel has been run by those whose currency was terrorism. You are right - no one does want to talk to them.
With bullets. He's now enjoying 72 virgins in paradise and we are here discussing for nothing.
These IDF soldiers were not in Israel, but in Gaza. Just like the IDF will not let Hamas forces enter Israel, Hamas forces do not let the IDF enter Gaza. Nothing related to terrorism here.
By shooting first and asking questions later. And oh did I forget to mention they do not even have to be "terrorists".
But I guess Abbas is still willing to talk to Israel under the conditions layed out by the Quartet, despite Israel's 62 years of terrorism, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, assasination and land theft.
That's called terrorism by non intellectuals They launch missiles from schools in Gaza as well Expect Israelis to sit back and wait? Sorry Israelis got sick of that after the first 10000.
As for yesterday, it was also a hostile attack by Hamas as, again, they were planting bombs along the border. It just shows you have no argument at all.
It's interesting you have a problem with people who shoot back after an unprovoked attack during which one their people was killed. The attack, by the way, was inside the victim's county, and the victim was in no way endangering Israel.
Is interesting pal goons send you their coordinates ,so you know where they were. To your info ,Israel extends also beyond the border fence ,put insde of Israeli territory like on the Lebanese border..
Irgun and Gangstern terrorist groups.
He's now enjoying ....
Like so many posters on this site, you change the subject when Israel lis criticized. What does anything going on in Pakistan have to do with Israel's shooting at Palestinians in Gaza?
Did you read the story. lets check the facts. Unprovoked attack.: They were trying to lay IED's against the border fence. Inside the victims country: What country is that and if you are going to try to blow up soldiers on the other side of the fence what does it matter where you are. Not endagering Israel. : S I suppose that trying to set up IEDS to blow up an army patrol is not endagering anyone. Maybe you should talk to your soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan where most of the killed are due to roadside bombs. But then Potobac in the hundreds of anti Isreal posts you have never let the facts interfere with you agenda of just bash bash and more bash.
does everyday ? And the pals were on the Israeli territory.Relate to that.
