Palestinian dies in clash with Israeli forces in West Bank, medics say
Clash erupts when about 50 Palestinians hurl rocks at Israel Defense Forces troops.
Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian during a clash in the West Bank on Thursday, Palestinian witnesses and medical officials said.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said the soldiers had been on an overnight raid in Qabatiya, a village near the city of Jenin, when about 50 Palestinians started hurling rocks at them.
Ahmed Imad Yusef, 21, was shot in the chest during the confrontation, medical workers said. Locals said Yusef was not a militant and worked in a vegetable market.
The military spokeswoman said reports of a Palestinian casualty were being investigated.
Violence has been on the rise in recent weeks in the West Bank. Seven other Palestinians have been shot dead in the territory by Israeli troops and three Israelis have been killed since Israeli-Palestinian peace talks resumed in July.
However, despite the recent series of terror attacks in the West Bank, the Israel military has yet to declare there has in fact been an escalation of violence there.
Over the past few weeks the Central Command has had to deal with seven serious attacks, from the killing of soldier Tomer Hazan by a Palestinian coworker in mid-September through the shooting incident near Ni’lin this past Saturday night, in which no one was hurt.
According to the Israel Defense Forces' Judea and Samaria Division, Israelis have not seen such a series of attacks in a short time span since 2010.
