Deputy PM: Time is now for action on Iran nukes
Meridor says 'no more time to waste' after world powers accept Iran response to offer of nuclear talks.
By Reuters and Haaretz Service Tags: Iran Israel newsDeputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor said "the time is now" for Israel and the world to act to thwart Iran's nuclear ambitions, after world powers on Friday accepted Iran's response to their offer of talks on the issue.
"The time is now," Meridor told Reuters in an interview published Saturday. "There is no more time to waste, and that's not only the Israeli perspective, it's much more general."
Meridor, who is also Minister of Intelligence and Atomic Energy, played down speculation that Israel was on the verge of launching a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.
"I'm not speaking of military action," he said. "I don't want to give any word that would be misinterpreted. I intentionally put this issue in its broader context."
He said Iran is a "special case" for his country because Iranian leaders say Israel is illegitimate and should not exist, Iran is boosting its military capabilities and is involved in international terrorism.
However, he added that, "One should not close one's eyes, but we are in a way fortunate that this is not only Israel's problem."
The minister said Iran would reach bomb-making potential before "the distant future," but noted this was not the key issue facing the world.
"The trend is clear, and if you want to be an owner of nuclear weapons or have the capability of being a nuclear power it changes the balance of power," he told Reuters.

Neither one knows what they're talking about Iran has repeatedly threatened Israel BBS, the Journalist who is incapable of doing some research on his own "IRAN ? THREATS TO ISRAEL http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,484958,00.html May 25, 2007 Ahmadinejad Threatens Israel with Destruction Iran's president is at it again, threatening Israel with destruction should it intervene in Lebanon again. The bellicosity comes as the UN nuclear watchdog warns that Iran may be as little as three years away from a nuclear weapon. It's hardly surprising any more when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threatens Israel with destruction. It wasn't so long ago that he suggested the country be moved to Alaska. Or just wiped off the map. But in a Thursday speech at Isfahan broadcast on state television, he issued a threat more direct than any that had come before. If Israel, he said, were to go to war against Lebanon again this summer, it would be destroyed. "If this year you repeat the same mistake of the last year," the Iranian president intoned, "the ocean of nations of the region will get angry and will cut the root of the Zionist regime from its stem." The speech came just hours after a report by the UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warning that Iran's ongoing enrichment of uranium meant that the country could have a nuclear bomb within three to eight years Vol XXXVI (No. 7), 27 Jul 2008 Iranian President vows to quit UN and wipe out Israel MIL/Agencies, Apr 25, 2006. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad repeated his vow that Iran would wipe out Israel off the world map. He continued to say "We cannot allow this fake regime of Israel to exist any more." . In wide-ranging remarks, Ahmadinejad said yesterday that Israel was an artificial state that could not continue to exist. He repeated his remarks that Iran would wipe out Israel from the world map. "Some 60 years has passed since the end of World War II, why should the people of Germany and Palestine pay now for a war in which the current generation was not involved," Ahmadinejad told a press conference. The Iranian president has long campaigned against Israel, saying last October that the Jewish state should be "wiped off the map." He has said Europe should better find home for Israelis, whom Iran would not allow to live on the Palestinian land. "Open the doors (of Europe) and let the Jews go back to their own countries," the president said on Monday. http://www.internationalreporter.com/news/read.php?id=1264
Zoe, Are you saying Jews are only safe in Israel? Well, if that's the case let me remind you Jewish tracks and Christian and Muslims tracks have crissed-crossed for centuries with relatively few mishaps. Of course, there were the Crusades that targeted many religious groups and Jews got their share, especially in spain and of course in German during Hitler's reign. Yet although there were many murderers & butchers on the world stage -Hitler was unique. Thus Jews have coexisted with other groups well and I imagine some historians could argue this helped buffer them as well as other groups in the process. Still, it's rather ironic you should bring this issue up as Jews living in Manhatten, London, Madrid and Paris and in other capitals and the greater ME itself are safer than Israelis. Indeed, Jews in Iran have refused to come to Israel as they feel safer and more content there. So Israel has become a contradiction in terms today for Jews. Dutch
Israel's failure to fulfill its UN obligations could be its mortal blow someday as it is a tool the international community can use to shut it down if it continues to fails to com- ply its UN obligations and international law. Dutch
Zoe, Are you saying the rest of the world is against Jews? Well, that sounds like paranoia to me and indeed racism at that. Jewish tracks and Christian tracks and Muslim tracks have always historically criss-crossed. And this fits in with the natural order of all species to roam for their food and in man's particular case to trade his goods and ware. Thus restrictions and barriers contradict the natural order of things and this is becoming more of the norm in the Global economy also. So there is this natural force at work to undo the rigid side of nationalism which came of age in the 20th century and I say good riddens to it too! Let's all roam and be free! Dutch
?And Paul, make no mistake about it, it is Israel making the threats. Iran has never threatened Israel with an attack, quite the opposite.? They may in fact be goading the hapless Zionist warmongers into making the first move.
"but who cares for israel? israel has no oil and it is inhabited by brave jews who put their homeland over their lives." Israel is inhabited by Zionists who think they are Jews. They ceased being Jews when they started worshiping the man-made idol called "the State of Israel." "...and we can not wait the day after for the wold to shade their crocodile tears," Quit whining and do something about it. That is if you have the stomach for it. By the way, why don't you live in Israel? I'm sure the "righteous" IDF can use another body for cannon fodder. Maybe Ben Jabo would like to go with you. He's an expert at being a IDF lackey. I bet if you ask him he?ll tell all his war stories.
Saddam Hussein was Hitler, so we attacked and found out it was a horribly disastrous mistake. It's so easy to throw around that name for anyone whom you want to cast as a vicious madman. If you read Ahmadinejad statements in large numbers, the message is that Israel will collapse of its own accord, not by an Iranian attack. In fact, Ahmadinejad has explicitly said there is no plan to attack Israel. As the settlements expand and the two-state solution wanes, many others in the West are saying the same thing -- a one-state solution will be the end of the Zionist dream. Instead of drumming up hysteria on Iran, Israel needs to formulate a sustainable policy for itself and the Palestinians.
this time for Israeli authorities will be nightmare to think about military actions against iran and there is no end game for their security to track military actions. if doing so , the world will get end . fan earth
the world has changed and iran has gained many in he course of developments. changing this position is not possible by attacking niether by sanctions but by dialogue.
Israel is destined to "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" in a fever hotter than a pepper sprout. And it has very little to do with any alleged Iranian effort to develop nuclear weapons. It more likely has to do with what Freud referred to as "repetition compulsion": the psychological phenomenon in which a person (or nation, in this case) repeats a traumatic event or its circumstances over and over again.
Time for the world to take out WWII History and review how the world failed to stop Hitler and instead, wasted time talking "peace" while Hitler used this time to get ready for war. Seriously people, are you ignorant of history or just stupid? The time to act is now, regardless of the cost. Bush was right. Ahmadi's regime must be REMOVED. The Persian people hate him as well. No one except the terrorists will miss that mad man.
No mention of Israeli nuclear weapons?????
the only safe address for a jew , is israel.
according to the european and usa leaders , hitler was not a threat. iran is a big threat to israel and they dont hide it. but who cares for israel? israel has no oil and it is inhabited by brave jews who put their homeland over their lives. the world does not care and we can not wait the day after for the wold to shade their crocodile tears,
The Iranian leader is correct as it stands Israel has no legitimacy since it has failed to honor the conditions of its existence: 1.) accept a full fledge sovereign Palestinian state in accordance with UN Resolution 181, and 2. ) accept the return of the Palestinian refug-ees "to their home" in Israel in accordance with UN Resolution 194. Dutch
The reality today, the world will take Israel out if it touches Iran. So unless you (collect-ly ) want to be looking for a new address I suggest you learn to get along with your neighbors and respect their sovereign rights. Dutch

Shock:"What if Iran does nothing to an attack but instead begins to rebuild their nuke program retreating from the IAEA?" Then Israel should step up the attacks. Really how long do you think Iran would sit on its hands? Shock:"What if Iran retaliates with Hezbollah, Syria and Hamas?" Absolutely guaranteed to happen. And they will all be taken out with MASSIVE firepower. Shock:"And the response to that could be a nightmare for the region" I agree Shock, now wouldn't it be far easier for Iran to just sign those Additional Protocols and put all our minds at ease? They have the capacity to avoid all of this at the stroke of a pen TODAY! But they won't. If their nuke program is peaceful as they say it is, they can easily prove it.
As usual, it does NOT take much to TRIGGER johnboy's LAUGHING gas WORKS. Meridor simply says that the WORLD has to ACT. And even haaretz OPINES that "Iran continues to play its game of deception". When johnboy STATES that "Apparently nobody is interested, sunshine", he is IGNORANT that "the US Congress is planning to announce SANCTIONS that WILL BE adopted by France, Germany, Britain and Canada". (my EMPHASIS) johnboy is UNABLE to have a GRIP on REALITY cos he is too busy LOOKING at his MIRROR and COOING to the REFLECTION, "Yes. HONEY, I am the FAIREST of them ALL. ALWAYS."
So, Iran is boosting its military capabilities, is involved in international terrorism and nuclear energy and considers Israel 'illegitimate'. What's the problem?
"Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor said 'the time is now' for Israel and the world to act to thwart Iran's nuclear ambitions," For. Israel. And. The. World. The World: No thanks, leave us out of it. Meridor: Forward Ho, Everyone! Everyone! Meridor: Ummm, everyone? Meridor: Errr, anyone? Meridor: Anyone at all? Apparently nobody is interested, sunshine.....
That's why you post streams of pure, unadulterated horse pucky Anymore good airplance stories you want to tell us?
Iran said they would "talk", they did, and also said they were going to continue their pursuit of a Nuclear bomb It seems you've already forgotten about 9/11/2001 and are living in 9/10/2001, unaware of what's out there The World Powers have been handling it for years, they're like a hamster on a treadmill, getting nowhere, Iran talks and tells the Un to go fly a kite Israel won't step aside, because Iran's threats are targeted against her quite specifically
...for not knowing the difference between posters who are "anti-Israel" - as compared to the rest of us who object to Israel's continued violations of UN resolutions and international law. In reality, there are very few, if any, anti-Israel comments here. There are many that are anti-Israeli policy and you apparently cannot tell the difference. And as for antisemitism, Israeli "supporters" bring up and reinforce antisemitic stereotypes on a daily basis, almost as if most of the wingnuts posters are really into it. Kind of like those who are virulently anti-Gay turn out to be stalking public toilets looking for a same-sex fling. And Paul, make no mistake about it, it is Israel making the threats. Iran has never threatened Israel with an attack, quite the opposite. The Mullahs are not suicidal Paul.
"Dan Meridor said "the time is now" for Israel and the world to act to thwart Iran's nuclear ambitions, after world powers on Friday accepted Iran's response to their offer of talks on the issue." Since the Iranians have agred to talk with the world powers, it is time for those talks to begin. It is also time for Israel tio stand aside and let the world powers handle it. Israel has so often threatened to bomb Iran that her presence would undoubtedly be seen as disruptive.
you tend to believe that they are serious will carry out their promise of doom and destruction IRAN ? What Israel expects Iran will do after receiving and attack(that i supposed it would be swift and simultaneous in a short time)? What if Iran does nothing to an attack but instead begins to rebuild their nuke program retreating from the IAEA? Israel image in the world would suffer greatly and Nobody, neither the US, will support Israel in that outcome and Iran will have nukes finally(We don't know if they want to build the bomb or only retain the ability to make it in short time). What if Iran retaliates with Hezbollah, Syria and Hamas? In this case i expect a brutal war because hizbullah will shoot everything it has,and Syria and Iran would do the same and the israeli retaliation could be very big. And the response to that could be a nightmare for the region.
I hope,at least, the whole Israel have present the name of this sir,he wants the war with Iran, please jews, don't be fooled, remember people that wants your sucidal as state. Attack Iran is a suicidal act,you must know it,at least, take a note of people wants this war. They are not friends of Israel. I don't want more war in the region,i want peace.
Without an amphibious assault capability, it will be difficult to invade and occupy and search for all the places where facilities might be hidden. And if Israeli troops have been practicing amphibious assaults in preparation, the world press has been remarkably considerate in covering up the preparations. If Meridor is thinking like Tojo that a Pearl Harbor style attack will do the job, maybe he should recall how that ended for Japan.
...Swiss Dino...how low can one go....
Haaretz continues to engage a small coterie of anti-Zionists supposedly who can't decide if they want Iran to have the bomb to give Israel a bloody nose or if Israel is demonically fabricating a threat--all the while this and other stories again and again quote Israel officials as stating Israel has no military intentions at the present time. There should be more than enough sites where these perpetually distaff libelers of Israel can join such friends as "flak88" and recall the good-old-days when a Jewish state defending itself did not have to be taken into account.
Both of you guys do not live in the region.. You bark at Mark like wild Dogs.. You guys got nerves ..go to Israel when the war starts..and we'll see how long you stay..
so that they can come in afterwards and clean up proclaiming Israel a Kristchen country. And Israel leaders are falling right into the dupe.
"The trend is clear, and if you want to be an owner of nuclear weapons or have the capability of being a nuclear power it changes the balance of power ..." Not really. It takes a lot more than possession of a nuke to change the balance of power. So jockey around all you want. If you ain't got the rest, you ain't gonna make it! A number of nations have nukes, and it is inevitable that more nations will acquire nukes. Israel must learn to live with it, as do the rest of the world. Anyhow, the nation that drops the third nuke is gonna get stomped on. Even Kim Jong Ill knows that! So relax, take a tranquillizer, visit your psychiatrist regularly, and, above all, stop making a big issue of it. It sounds neurotic. An after thought: You might consider making peace with Iran. It is the jerks who run the show over there that give you palpitations, not the nuclear device itself.
russia is not an ally of the u.s., the west, or of israel. russia's aim is to weaken all of the above. therefore your post has no relevance.
Naw, why listen to this "warmonger", there's plenty of time until the first nuke rains down on Tel Aviv, that most liberal and "balanced" of cities so passionately embraced by the likes of leftist ideologues such as Gideon Levy (Undoubtedly Gideon would've advocated to Antek that he should wait to take up arms against the nazis, so as to show peaceful intent)! No, Israel should wait...at least until Syria too has nukes-then she might be justified in acting.
Perhaps Israel will pay as much attention to what Putin thinks as we do to you.
Could you explain for us Stephan how that worked out with Hitler? After all, if talking is ALWAYS better than bombing perhaps you can enlighten us on this.
Mr Ben Jabo, why do you assume that Iran is getting Russian missles. Stories of '73 war..here's one the USA airlift of supplies, food, etc saved Israel and Israeli's are not grateful. Obama and the current Administration are very talented in this dipolmacy game, much better than Bush's cowboy diplomacy.
The War Hawks are sounding desperate. Putin must have been very blunt when he told Bibi where he could stuff his war.
She has to do what has to be done before Iran gets the new Russian Missiles If you will recall, in the '73 War, Israeli Aircraft weren't able to penetrate the Egyptian missile batteries, tanks and infantry had to go in first, take out the AA before the IAF was able to do the necessary My guess would be, as soon as Israel can verify the missiles were in transit to Irant, that's it!! Obama will talk and talk, nothing will materialize from his efforts
Pure, unaldulterated, opportunistic Israel-hatred and Jew-baiting. A daily occurrence, in these talkbacks with Haaretz' eye blind to that hatred but wide open to any of us who challenge it for what it is.
Yes, Nukes have tipped the balance of power in favor of Israel. Israel's legitimacy? Clearly Israel agrees with Iran. It is always an upfront demand on the Palestinians. They must recognize Israel's right to exist, thereby legitimizing the state of Israel. Clearly Israel craves the legitimacy which only the Palestinians can convey.
When Arabs were allowed to move freely, as a token of thanks they sent in homicide bombers killing bus passengers, pizza parlor customers and shoopers in the stores You should notice, that since the Wall was put in place and check points established, there have been far fewer reports of innocent Israeli's getting killed by homicidal nuts
Therefore, support a massive Jewish emigration to Alaska now. In fact, a most compassionate, altruist and magnanimous proposal as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's offer of relocating the illegitimate state of Israel in Alaska won't ever be suggested again.
I think its times to stop Israeli occupation and suffering of people by removing all the obstacles to free movement of the Pa population. Iran is just raeson for this government to continue with building more and more settelement. and what about Israeli nuclear program?
talking is always better then bombing..
I know aren't they soooooo bad Tim ? Wish they were more like Switzerland or Canada with the whole hockey thing.
What exactly is Dan Meridor saying ? Please MR Deputy PM define "action". This is a non-news article -perhaps its just to get his name into the public limelight? HAL.
Looks like Israel's beating of the war drums makes it look even more ineffectual. Better go out and kill some defenceless people to make yourselves feel powerful.
That "Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor" does not mention even one more aside from Israel does say a lot, or rather not very much as in this case. Evwen with the possibility of setting back Iranian nuclear enrichement, the whole lot of the international community does not support any military action taken against Iran, as the fallout might in any case reach their borders as well and not only treaten Israel.
What's the purpose of further talks? If Iran is innocentlyh pursuing nuclear energy and not weapons it can invite inspection agencies in freely to all site to see what they are up to. If talks are just another form of camouflage to delay sanctions as they develop a bomb, it will be clear enough soon . Iran would do better to improve it's domestic record of repression of dissent, and cease punishing opponents by thuggish militias. The mixture of religion and politics has taken the worst features of both. Time for seperation of church and state like in most modern states if they want real social and economic progress.
