Daughter of Ahmadinejad aide makes anti-torture film, seeks asylum in Germany
Narges Kalhor, at Nuremberg Human Rights Film Festival, says her father hasn't seen her film.
By The Associated Press Tags: Iran Israel newsThe daughter of a top adviser to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has applied for asylum in Germany, organizers of a film festival that she was attending said Tuesday.
Narges Kalhor, the daughter of Ahmadinejad's adviser on cultural and media affairs, submitted her asylum application to authorities in southern Germany, Nuremberg Human Rights Film Festival spokesman Matthias Rued said.
Her father, Mahdi Kalhor, has been seen as a close ally of Ahmadinejad since early this decade.
In an interview with fellow Iranian filmmaker Hana Makhmalbaf posted on YouTube on Monday, Narges Kalhor said she did not believe her father knew about her plans.
"I'm certain he hasn't seen my film or know about this festival or where I am," she said. "I came from my own desire, for cinema, and I have to continue."
Narges Kalhor had been at the Nuremberg festival to present her film Darkhish (The Rake), which condemns the use of torture and the barbarity of totalitarianism.
Mahdi Kalhor told Iran's official IRNA news agency that he knew nothing about details of his daughter's films or her plans to leave the country.
He blamed the Iranian opposition for supporting her attempts to challenge the government.
"This issue is one of the symbols of a media and soft war that opposition has launched," the agency quoted Mahdi Kalhor as saying.
He also told IRNA he had divorced Narges' mother a year ago over differences of opinion, saying she was a zealous opponent of Ahmadinejad. Narges had been living with her mother.
In the video, Narges Kalhor appears wearing a green scarf - the color of the Iranian opposition - draped about her neck and expresses support for the reform movement.
She said that, while she and her father have differing opinions, she hoped he would support her and possibly even change his mind.
"Any moment, a person can change," Narges Kalhor said. "At any time, a person can have a moment of calm and think about what the correct path is."
"Just a little solitude can open our eyes to the world and we can decide, this is the correct path, the path of these millions of people who went to the streets asking for freedom" she went on to say.

I certainly hope Germany will take her in and then protect her. I would think her life would be in great danger by other Muslims.
I want to say that we are prode to see bravery of Narges for Iran viva Iran
But, this is not softball. The police and army will have to defect. Otherwise they will have to do the job themselves. Ajad and his black turbaned bosses are not open to civil discourse.
Prizes should not be given out in advance. This is especially true of revolutionary movements. Remember that the current regime grew out of the revolution that overthrew Iran's previous totalitarian nightmare.
This was the best thing I read about to-day, and I agree w/response #10: it should have gone to the Greens. Originally, I also chose to study film, thinking it would be a good way to change ideas, so I wish you good luck, though I think that the situation for Iranians is more dangerous than they anticipate.
Why is she taking refuge? Isn't Iran at the height of civilization and freedom under the wise leadership of A.N. and the supreme leader?
Silly Persian Kitty who thinks that internal protests by spoiled rich persian kids can do anything against the iranian imperial regime that has the full backing of the russians (as well as the acquiesence of the Obama defeatists) to kill and torture as many protesters as necessary. In return, Ahmadinejad and Khatami will pretend to cooperate with the fools running the UN atomic energy associations, not that any UN organization is capable of doing anything useful. Sorry Kitty, your friends are doomed, if the take to the streets on November 4 or any other day, they will be arrested, beaten, raped, tortured, tried and convicted to death or long prison sentences. Without George Bush around to keep the iranian imperialists a bit nervous, they have carte blanche to do whatever they want to maintain their power.
Besides this intelligent girl seeking asylum, the NY Times reported something like 2,000 journalists have fled Iran. Fearing the crackdown and outright jail sentence. In the last few days, the Revolutionary Guard have taken control of the telecommunication monopoly. Tehran's elite force is branching into a pseudo-economic orbit. Something along the lines of the Soviet - KGB model and the ascent of the oligarches. Where they not only dominate the economy but controlling the state as well. This follows a familiar pattern, in 2004 the Guard shut down the airport and forcibly evicted a Turkish company. Then put in place it's own controlling firm. It Looks like Khamenei may be the Supreme Buddha... but the Guard are running-rings around his Imperial Holiness.
shame on the Nobel Peace prize committee.
Cuba has also a fabulous democracy. Everyone votes, believe me.
According to Mark, "The handwriting is on the wall". One could have said the same thing about Cuba in 1970 or Russia in 1917. It took more than 70 years for Russia to get rid of the communist dictatorship. In the case of Cube, unfortunately, the handwriting is still on the wall. If the history teaches us any lessons, the original statement by Mark about Iran appears rather meaningless.
shes what we all in the world want ,,freedom from evil
There was an overview in the Wall Street Journal on the Iranian system and they have democracy everywhere. On all levels. As a matter of fact.
the current iranian regime is finished and these smart young people know it. good luck!
The Supreme Junta continues to see erosion of it's support. It has become SAVAK v2.0 and in destroying the illusion of democracy destroyed it's legitimacy. The handwriting is on the wall for all to see.
I wish your optimism were well-founded. The fact is she is applying for asylum in the West, not staying put and fighting. I suspect she will be joined by others and in a few years they will live like the Chinese survivors of Tiannamen live now. I wish it weren't so, but it seems the way it is going now.
A little make-up goes a long way. Good luck Honey!
She won't be deported to Iran. She is a high profile case, no country would risk the backlash for deporting her, much less Germany. Germany has given asylum to a lot of asylee who have/had connections with the current regime including ex-Rev Guards-turned-dissident.
I truly hope she can find asylum somewhere. No doubt if she is forced to return to Iran, she will be tried as other critics have been - and we have seen their unfortunate fate.
They killed the son of one of AN's advisors three months ago in prison in the post-election crackdown. Now this one (thankfully) gets out and she'll be safe in the West. Do you see how widespread is the green movement? It literally encompasses every social class, religion, ethnicity, profession, education, and age. What gives me immense pleasure is seeing the trend WITHIN the system. How the young generation is rebeling against its fathers' demagoguery. Today the universities had massive peaceful protests. Again the regime used force. Stupid mullahs and coup government don't realize they'll be suffocated by the green tsunami. There is a MASSIVE protest and demonstration planned for Nov 4th all over Iran. Watch out it will be bigger than Qods Day (which the Nat Sec Intel report stated to be the biggest in the history - even bigger than the 79 demos). Long Live Iran-e Azad!!!
What a strong individual to stand up to the regime in Iran in this manner, present a film and seek asylum. Ms. Kalhor was raised well to think with her own mind. Her mother did an excellent job, even though her father has supported the religious tyranny in Iran that has been well documented. May Ms. Kalhor find safety, freedom and a better life in the West. God bless her for speaking up and out.
