Court orders cop to pay NIS 50,000 to right-wing protester he attacked
Victim Laduyan filed personal suit against Border Policeman Attia, after court decided not to convict him.
By Chaim Levinson Tags: Israel settlements Israel news Israel Border PoliceThe Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Tuesday ruled that an officer from the Border Police special forces unit must pay NIS 50,000 in compensation to the right-wing activist he attacked during the evacuation of a West Bank outpost in 2006.
Officer David Attia was found guilty of ramming his helmeted head into protester David Laduyan, during clashes surrounding the demolition of homes in the Amona outpost.
Despite being found guilty, presiding Judge Yehezkel Berkley had decided during a trial following the incident not to convict the officer so as to avoid his forced dismissal from the Border Police.
After that ruling, Laduyan filed a personal suit against Attia, demanding compensation. "The insult and denegration I experienced have only worsened since his conviction was canceled," Laduyan wrote in his suit.
Last month, another member of the special forces unit confessed in a police disciplinary tribunal to attacking a right-wing protestor while evacuating another illegal West Bank outpost.
Raphael Cohen confessed that he held one of the protestors in place, dragged him violently, slapped him, and pulled him by his underwear. The evacuation of the outpost, which was near the settlement of Hashmonaim, took place two years ago.

These cops are sick. They should face jail time as well.
You say the job of the police is to protect the individual rights of the citizens, not to beat people up or punish them. Do you include Palestinians in the category of those who shouldn't be beat up or punished by the police?
So this violent protester against a valid order that got some of that back that his ilk brought onto the police gets money. It would be only fair if the protesters against the land-grab fence/wall, that got injured by live- and rubber-ammunition get even more. How many money has be given to the innocent and injured protesters against the violent Wall?
The job of the police is to protect the individual rights of the citizens of this country, not to beat people up or punish them. If the settlers broke the law, there are courts charged with punishing them. A man who thinks it his right to beat up another man and acts on that belief belongs in prison, not on the police force.
It seems strange to me that the border police who must contend with violent refusal to comply with their orders when evacuating outposts or settlements are punished when they respond. What is the punishment for those who refuse to follow police orders and use violence against the same forces that protect them in these settlements. I guess once again the settlers do not have to follow the same rules as the rest of us...
