Clinton to Obama: We've made scant progress on Mideast peace

Mitchell to visit Israel in fresh bid to relaunch talks; U.S. urges Israel, PA to step up peace efforts.

By Natasha Mozgovaya, Barak Ravid and Agencies Tags: George Mitchell Barack Obama Israel news Palestinians

The United States has made little progress in its efforts to renew stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reported to President Barack Obama on Thursday.

Clinton met with Obama on Thursday to submit an interim report on the status of U.S. peacemaking efforts. Obama's envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, also participated in the meeting.

An administration official said that during the meeting, Clinton advised the president that challenges remain before the negotiations could resume.

The official said the Palestinians have strengthened their security efforts, while the Israelis have expressed a willingness to curtail settlement activity. But the official said both sides need to do more for the process to move forward.

Following the meeting, the White house urged Israel and the Palestinians to do more to open the way to renewed peace negotiations.

The White House said Mitchell would visit Israel next week, in his latest attempt to relaunch peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's representatives at talks in Washington, Mike Herzog and Yitzhak Molcho, returned to Israel on Wednesday after more than a week of discussions with Mitchell and his advisers.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat was also in Washington for talks with American officials.

Molcho briefed Netanyahu and other cabinet members on the discussions held in Washington.

A Jerusalem source said that gaps still exist between the Israeli and Palestinian positions and also between the American and Palestinian sides that are preventing peace talks from resuming.

The source added that conditions are not ripe for renewed negotiations at this time.

During Mitchell's visit to the region last month, Netanyahu and Mitchell failed to come to reach a compromise over continued construction in West Bank settlements.

Washington and Jerusalem have been at odds over the scope of a settlement freeze. The Americans had demanded that Israel commit to cease all construction for a period of one year. The Israelis said they would be willing to commit to a maximum freeze of six months.

The US has fought for Israel right from the begginning. If it was Truman approving the creation of the State of Israel, Nixon doing an airlift of food, supplies and military aid, Israel would have fallen in 1973. Ever since, large trasnfers of cash and military equpiment has gone from US taxpayers to Israeli citizens. We've backed up Israel numerous times in the UN security council, with veto's. Petra, America is pledged to Israel but more and more are disillussion by Israelis' government. Americans can't understand, why Israel doesn't make peace....in my sixty years..I heard 'em all..all the excuses. Maake peace, join the modern world and be a good regional neighbor.

Diplomats have been trying to solve the middle east problem diplomatically for 60 years and it cannot be done. Did you ever hear that to keep doing something the same way and expecting different results is insane? The fact is the middle east problem is a legal problem. The United Nations took property from Palestinian Arabs in order to create a safe haven for persecuted Jews and they never paid just compensation to the Palestinian Arabs for their losses. It`s no wonder that they harbor resentment. You know what you get when you take someone`s property for no money? 60 years of war. I don`t want to hear that Arabs left voluntarily. I leave my property voluntarily all the time. In doing so my property rights are not relinquished. The UN needs to set up a Middle East Compensation Commission where people, Jews too, who lost property due to Israel`s creation can come, present claims and get justly compensated in exchange for a release of claims.

The Yanks have landed with their big great guns, toda!

It is clear that Israel is taking advantage of Obamas occupation with the many issues on his plate. Natanyahu and other right wing leaders in his government are defying him and making him look inefficient and weak. This action is clearly weakening the first African American president. They are making sure that he is a one term president and the last minority president. Minorities and progressive Americans who elected Obama will never forgive Israel for what they are doing to make Obama fail. All of this is because of the Israeli greed as evident by the continued theft of Palestinian land. Natanyahu is deceiving Obama and making him fail. Unfortunately, All of us Jews will pay the price down the road.

Rick, even if the Israelis are able to isolate themselves in a hertmetically-sealed bubble to keep off any attacks, they will never be able to "relax in [their] isolated, non-integrated island" until every last one of the 20% of the population consisting of the Palestinians who did not flee in 1948 and 1967 has been deported or otherwise eliminated.

"The Americans had demanded that Israel commit to cease all construction for a period of one year." This lie has been pushed for so long that we the readers would LOVE to see Barak David show even the slightest source for this "information". Let me guess: "A Falafel seller that wants to remain anonymous" that 'ol well of informations for Mr Ravid. The truth of the matter is that the US wants the freeze to last during the 'Final status agreement' negotiations and not to allow for Israel, in the middle of these negotiations, to start building again, as this could be seen as a provocation. The freeze is for the occupied territories including East Jerusalem.

Everyone knows that there can be no Middle East peace without pressure on BOTH sides. The US has shown once again that it's prepared to put pressure on Abbas to do its bidding. But once again, there's nobody to put pressure on Israel. The public in both the US and EU would probably be happy to see their politicians putting a bit of pressure on Israel, but the politicians are too scared. They know that if they do, they will get a lot of hassle from the influential Jewish communities in their countries. Letters will be written to papers accusing them of anti-semitism, financial support will go to their electoral rivals etc. etc. It's easier for them to avoid pressuring Israel. It means there will be no Middle East peace, but ultimately the politicians opt for an easy life.

President Obama considers the 300,000 Jews (17%), who reside among Judea and Samaria?s 1.5 million Arabs, an obstacle to peace. Why would he, then, view the 1.5 million Arabs (20%), who reside among pre-1967 Israel?s 6 million Jews, as an example of peaceful coexistence?! Obama urges the uprooting of Jewish communities from Judea and Samaria, in order to supposedly advance peace and human rights. Would he, therefore, urge the uprooting of Arab communities from pre-1967 Israel?! Is the USA still our ally ? : http://xrl.us/bex2jh

It obliterates the AntiChrist and engineers the Return or Arrival of The Messiah Jesus Christ. 5.The Formula protects Israel and at the same time remembers God?s Mercy promised to Abraham and his descendants, i.e., the Arabs, forever. 6.Advise to world leaders: stop talking, find the mahdi.

As long as the Israeli's believe settlement will lead to ownership without penalty why would they stop?

It is prudent of Israel not to allow that it is being pushed into a corner. Neither the Palestinians, nor any of the Arab World is giving one inch of leeway to allow Israel to exist as a Jewish State and accept that it has the right to exist securely amid them. The Arab States and all their sympatizers will use any propaganda and any forum to villify Israel. Once they offer a friendly hand, once they pledge to let the Jews likve in peace in Israel, THEN AND ONLY THEN, should Israel reciprocate by accepting them as friendly neighbors and work with them. Until that happems Israel should secure itself against their hatred. Until now all they manoevering has been to weaken Israel, to rob them of any security and to try to structure the future so that ultimately Israel will cease to exist as a Jewish Homeland.

I know there are many who will claim that the onus is always on Israel to do more rather than on the Palestinians and there is some truth to that. But, dear reader, understand that it is israel that has all the power and the state with the power has the greater ability to act and also, as we have seen with Israel, the greater power to impede progress.
