Clinton: Decision to escalate row with Israel 'is paying off'
U.S. Secretary of State says pressure over East Jerusalem construction could restart negotiations.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Hillary Clinton Israel news East JerusalemUnited States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday that the Obama administration's decision to ramp up pressure on Israel over construction of Jewish homes in East Jerusalem was bringing results.
In an interview with BBC television, Clinton was asked whether escalating the tone with Israel had paid off.
She said: "I think we're going to see the resumption of the negotiation track and that means that it is paying off because that's our goal."
Over the past two weeks Israel has sought to cool American ire over plans for 1,600 new homes in Ramat Shlomo, a Jewish neighborhood that lies beyond the Green Line in East Jerusalem.
Clinton had described the announcement, which coincided with a visit to Israel by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and led Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to pull out of scheduled U.S.-mediated peace talks, as an "insult".
It was now the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's duty to overcome opposition within his coalition government and ensure that the stalled negotiations moved forward, Clinton told the BBC.
"I think what the prime minister has said repeatedly is that his government and he personally are committed to pursuing these negotiations and he just has to make sure that he brings in everyone else," she said.
"That's his responsibility and it's not something that the United States can or is interested in doing."
Over the past few days the U.S has signaled its desire to move beyond the row over Ramat Shlomo and focus on restarting so-called the 'proximity talks' between Israel and the Palestinians.
Palestinian officials told The Associated Press on Friday that it appeared unlikely Abbas would defy mounting international pressure for a return negotiations.
Israel also seems willing to return to the negotiating table.
At a news conference later Friday following a meeting of the Quartet of Middle East peace mediators in Moscow, Clinton indicated that Netanyahu is ready to address U.S. concerns.
"What I heard from the prime minister in response to the requests we made was useful and productive," she said.
In a telephone call to Netanyahu last week, Clinton laid out U.S. expectations from Israel including a rollback to the housing plan, a gesture of good faith to the Palestinians and an express statement that all issues dividing Israel and the Palestinians, including the fate of divided Jerusalem, remain part of the negotiations.
Clinton said she expects to see Netanyahu in Washington next week, where both are to address the annual gathering of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
President Obama had planned to be out of town during Netanyahu's visit but canceled his trip to remain in Washington for a vote on his health care overhaul.
According to reports on Friday, the president has scheduled a last-minute meeting with Netanyahu.

Unfortunately, you have taken quite a bit of blog site space to say nothing. The UN did not "okay" the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. There were no legal reasons to bring the matter before the UN. No violations of international law occurred. Iraq was in violation of 19 UN resolutions when the coalition invaded Iraq. Israel has replaced Iraq as the nation in violation of more UN resolutions than any country in the world. The remainder of your post is completely irrelevant to the subject at hand: a series of non-sequiturs. If you wish to respond to #163, have you nothing substantive to offer?
It is amazing. You Jews have occupied Palestinian land and oppressed over 3 million Palestinians for over 42 years, and know nothing about them, not even where they come from. How can a people be so self centered. When Israelites crossed from Jordan into Canaan, also known as Palestine, the land was occupied by (among others) the semite tribes, Amorites, Hittites and Jebusites. The Jebusites had built Jerusalem and inhabited the city for 100 more years Many noted scholars and historians have determined that the Jebusites are the forebears of Palestinians. There is no data to support your claim that the semite Jebusites became Jews. But you have a record of making things up, and simply lying about historical fact. Are you, who, more than anyone, loves to quote expired treaties, trying to tell us that all the inhabitants of Palestine during all the years of the British Mandate were Jews: the Grand Mufti was a Jew? If so, they sure fooled the British.
There is a growing awareness in the US that the US special relationship with Israel may not serve US best interests. (See Gen Petraeus recent testimony before congress, and Biden statement to Netanyahu) which, if it progresses, will sorely test your hypothesis: Israel doesn't need the US. Without the US veto in the UNSC, Israel would be dragged before the Int'l Criminal Court in the Hague answering war crimes charges before you could turn around. Without the vetoes, Israeli on-going violations of international laws would visit upon Israel the pent-up wrath of the international community on a scale heretofore unimagined in Israel. UN sponsored boycotts, divestments and sanctions would follow. Without US loan guarantees, Israel could not borrow a dime internationally. Israel could not survive the isolation: no imports, no exports, no military aid, and no int'l associations. Israel does not lead the world in technology: but if it did, it would mean nothing. You can't eat technology.
Funny, what I have said above has been predicted prior by an Israeli named Abba Eban in a NYT Op-Ed in 1988 and it is all coming to pass today... "If we insist on ruling an entire territory and population (which was never envisioned when we made the dramatic breakthrough to Jewish state- hood), we shall soon lose our jewish majority , our democratic priniciples, our hope of ultimate peace, the prospect of avoiding war, the main- tenance of our international friendships, the durability of the Egyptian treaty relationship and any chance of a national consenus at home. The status quo is the least viable and the most catastrophic of all Israeli options." Abba Eban Israelis will pay dearly for Netanyahu's reck- less disregard for the rule of law as divest-ments and boycotts increase ten fold ...Dutch
# 163 Ron, What rubbish ! What does it matter to the hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis,if the UN OKeyed the invasion or not. What are you going to tell the families: We killed you because the UN said 'Go Ahead' ? And by the way the Americans & the British never show the mutilated bodies of American & British soldiers, covering up the ghastly scenes from the weak & gentle stomachs of the Amr's & the Brits. But the nerves you have in showing all the blood & bodies smashed beyond recognization of all others around the world. And by the way what is the proportion on the Negroes.Oops sorry; African-Americans & Puerto Ricans fighting & shedding their blood for the 'White' Americans. And don't give us that crap that,'We are all Americans' a)Give us the numbers. b) Had the media shown the ghastly bodies of the soldiers In Iraq & Afghanistan. The war would have ended long ago. Silly talkbackers like Ron think about it !
The clintons loved arafat and interfered with the Israeli election in 1999 hilary and obama want to overthrow Netanyahu now. But lack the spine to comment on the stolen Iranian election or the arrest and executions of dissidents
These is no such thing as a Palestinian. Never has been. never will be. It is an invention of the PLO propagandists in used to push Israel out of the Middle East. It is a smoke screen. The concept exists only to serve as a virtual front against Israel and as a dumping ground for anti-semitic tendencies.
... So, what Hillary said about "paying off" looks (the second time) ridiculous. I mean that her predictions look ridiculous, particularly when predicting anything about Netanyahu!
The pious wish list she posted has little to do with tides of hatred. Sometimes, if a country like Israel decides to push too hard, the reaction against it is not tides of hatred but realization of how it is becoming increasingly offensive to world standards. Think Serbia.
1. Clinton's sexual behavior had nothing to do with his capability and performance as president, which is the only thing that counts. 2. The fact that you never foresaw that the government (following the trends of most of the century) would have an increasingly larger say in how you live your life speaks a great deal about your gullibility.
"It was now the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's duty to overcome opposition within his coalition government and ensure that the stalled negotiations moved forward, Clinton told the BBC." Hillary Corrected. " It is now the duty of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 's to overcome the unlawful opposition of his coalition government and ensure the stalled negotiations move forward towards a Palestinian state..." Hillary, let's face it if this doesn't happen Israel will be isolated and targeted internationally as a failed state and recommendations to suspend its UN membership will be made as a symbol of human injustice and a safe haven for no one today. This is the growing reality and you and other officials should not shy away in spelling out this reality for the Israeli laedership. People have a right to know the consequences of their inactions and undermining esp in this conflict.Their chronic avoidance and war will no longer be accepted on any level, today. Dutch
I would call Afghanistan and Iraq war zones: US armed forces actively engaged in combat operations against armed enemy forces. These combat operations do not scorn the rest of the international community: are in violation of no UN resolutions, nor international laws. Your opinion of whether we will succeed is of no interest. The Israeli thumbing of its nose is a deliberate and arrogant declaration of scorn for the international community for its condemnation of Israeli attempts to abort the peace talks and to continue its violations of UN resolutions and articles of the 4th Geneva Convention. There is no moral or legal equivalency. Please, spare us the Jewish obsession with victimhood, and the "we are all going to end up at Masada" syndrome. Israel is not surrounded by cut-throat regimes. Israel hasn't had a war with any Arab armed forces in 36 years. The Arab League (which includes Palestine) offered Israel comprehensive peace plans in 2002 and 2007, which Israel rejected.
You Jews have recently developed a growing drumbeat that the US settler/Indian wars of the 18th and 19th centuries are somehow the legal equivalency of the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory. Are you all so damned dumb that you don't know that during those indian wars there was no UN, there were no Geneva Conventions, and no international laws to govern the international community. There are now, and Israel is in violation of more UN resolutions than any country in the world: and it is in violation of numerous articles of the 4th Geneva Convention; each one representing as war crime. Do you think that with some distant and irrelevant analogy you can justify the fact that the Gaza blockade is the worse violation of human rights taking place in the world today? Whats the matter with you people?Stop the violations of international law, and cease your actions as a rogue nation. The world is getting tired of you.
Boy oh boy, never have I seen such profound ignorance such as you have displayed encapsualted in just one post The Clinton's have displayed time and again that they are opportunists, and he is a serial adulsterer, who swore he hadn't done it with Monica Lewinsky As far as Obama goes, I never voted for him because he promised too much to make it believable Now, we have the resulsts of Obama's promises, all broken Transparency on C-Span - Null and void Healthcare being jammed down the throats of American's who have quite prominently stated they don't want it, by an overwhelming majority of 66% If and when Obama forced his Healthcare through, a Governmental committee will decide how much care we can get and if we are worth the expense No doubt, having a Democratic party affiliation will expedite receiving the care Having served in the U.S. ARMY, I never visualized that America was on the verge of turning into a contemporary facist Germany, where the government decidee
The key to who controls the future is at the University level. If you can reach people when they are at that stage and transform them into people you can get along with, the World can sort of look hospitable. Muslims aren't stupid or crazy. They place their Mosques right adjacent to the major schools. University of Arizona for example. What do we Jews have? We have Chabad Centers for Jews. Muslims grab everybody. They proselytize just like Christians do. So what do we Jews do? We just back all the Jews up into one place. Israel. Where we are entirely surrounded. Where's the logic? My idea about turning Zionism into some sort of Club for everybody is much better. People don't attack their own Country Clubs. Either that or we go back to becoming ecomomic advisors for moderate Muslims. Not just military advisors for USA and it's allies, which is all we are at the present time. Richest person right now, is a Lebanese Arab Christian in Mexico. Carlos Slim. Does he need advising? See?
# 155 Bebbie. Another wonderful talkbacker pushing the tides of hatred away from our shores. Wishing you a very Happy Passover. TT/I
If you want to keep insisting that Fatah and the PA called for violence, try reading the following news report, especially the last paragraph. http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=120935§ionid=351020202 It seems you like to get your information only from biased Zionist news sources.
So what if East Jerusalem negotiations will restart! Bibi will never compromise East Jerusalem settlements for the affections of Clinton or Obama. The Obama Administration will NOT do anything to halt Iran's path. The Obama administration cannot and especially will not force the Bibi Administration to freeze settlements in East Jerusalem. Israel does not need the Obama administration in any capacity whatsoever. Israel is leading the world in technology, and is no longer the glove puppet of America. When the Republicans in America reclaim their power in two years from now, it will be Israel's greatest and most triumphant moment to resume the trust and friendship of America, which eludes her in these few more short months. WE"LL COPE Very Well until then!
This is excuse or you'll create any tiny excuse not to make peace with Israel. When I look at the last 40 years, the only clever person was Envar Sadat making peace with Israel, paying with his life. If Syria Assads father was clever enough at that time, to day Golan was in their sovereignty, there were calm in Northern border. If in 2000 Arafat should had accepted the Clintons plan today there was no wall there were a Palie state. The excuse of not accepting the Clintons plan was the right of return for 4 Million Palies to Israel, starting a new war that had costed to you almost a decade long destruction. What had happened in the last decade. Did Palies returned to Israel or achieved a better life? Give up your dreams, running for your dreams is happening to be nightmares. If you want Israel to engage to a peace, the way is not USA's to cut all the support to Israel, but for Palies to denounce that they had gave up the right of return. Are Palies ready to make peace? Aby
Same thing with Billy. They are such useless tools -- the ONLY diplomatic victories they can claim is that they leaned on Israel. Oh, Billy also bombed Iraq and Afghanistan ineffectually with cruise missiles. Oh, Billy also bombed the hell out of Bosnia.
"you do not brag... you do not make controversial statements... except in the case of populist governments...." but, unfortunately, the great superpower has a super populist government. such was predictable. the harm will be very difficult, if not impossible, to repair. shavua tov, cipora
Olmert claims, and I believe him, that he made very radical proposal to Abbas, and it was rejected. Netanyahy will never accept such proposals, no matter what. In particular, Jerusalem will not be handed over to Saudi and other Muslim interests. I do fault Netanyahu for not having more control over his ministers.
the united states should pray that the muslim brotherhood does not come to power in egypt. i know countries do not pray, but you get my point. regards, cipora
What nonsense? But we get the picture. Your agenda is clear. You are posting primarily to bash Barak Obama. How sad since you speak from ignorance. Yes, that too is clear. Maybe you should spend some time informing yourself before you spout your venom. It is particularly sad to see one of my fellow Americans make a fool of himself on foreign media, if in fact you even are an American.
I like nobody important's reponse on Jerusalem. Maybe Hillary feels bitter (maror) because of what Bill put her through w/Monica Lewinski, and subconsciously is glad to "give it back" to Israel. Netanyahu who just celebrated his father's 100th birthday, is very conscious of the fact that he needs America's help on Iran. That must be at the back of his mind when he accedes to all these demands. Even Abbas, for all his talk about freezing East Jerusalem, was only daring to talk about borders, and now the work is done for him, he just has to sit back, and will receive East Jerusalem as his capital, on a silver platter. All we will have to do is wait for Armageddon, courtesy of Obama and Clinton.
Long ago I knew there is no future to Israel, Why? Republic Banana is no country. When I heard the advisor to Ariel Sharon (I forgot his name, this week) saying on Reshet Bet Israel couldn?t survive with out US support, I knew there is no Israel any more; there is the republic banana of Israel. I got more respect for the Palestinians then for Israel as a whole. The Palestinian are ready to fight with absolutely no compromise. Why no body condemns the politicians that brought Arafat from complete dissolution to the west bank and to a position of power with the Oslo agreement. Some body is responsible but no body pats the price. The Israeli political elite is responsible for the place Israel is now, and the Israeli people are no less responsible.
Looks like all the demonic forces scattered throughout the world and suppressed after WWII is consolidating and manifesting itself against the most legitimate nation on earth - Israel. It has finally afflicted the U.S., as Islam and the west join hands to combat the great threat unruly Jews. If this is happening then one can assume that there is going to be a whole lot of nasty things in the world that the progressive enlightened geniuses among us will claim are 'natural disasters', but we know better.
US is a friend and a friend does not let a friend out in the cold. A friend set up the rules, and the friend, not being a friend, just walk out on you. This is kitchen psychology, do try it at home!
Abbas still hasn't remove the clause in the PLO Charter that called for the destruction of Israel, and that was agreed to at Oslo by Arafat Bibi shouldn't agree to anything, until Abbas has kept the promise made by Arafat at Oslo, which pre-dates the present situation For the live of me, I can't figure out why you're still in the USA, all parties should partake of the wisdom of a backseat driver
And I don't any inclination to search to find about what you're talking about
Jewish Americans will support Israels interest at all cost even if goes against American interests. That is in sharp contrast to most other ethnic groups in the USA. So does the USA really need the AIPAC? I think this year the AIPAC should have an apologetics tone instead of a defiant one.
Abbas and Fatah did not announce a call for violence. Your claim that they did is not a point of view, it is a lie. Dahlan's call for Arabs to protect Al Aksa, and Abdel-Kader's call for Arabs to converge on Al Aksa to save it, do not represent Fatah announcements for call to violence: and you know it. You misquote Obama, there was no need to condemn incitement if there was none. Obama never mentioned Hurva in any context. Are you a compulsive liar? Neither Clinton nor the administration escalated anything: they merely recognized an insult and affront to the United States and called it just that. An escalation could have cost Israel $3 billion this year: that's escalation. Two-bit hacks announce illegal building plans on occupied territory just before peace talks are scheduled to begin, or humiliate a Turkish Ambassador because Israel didn't like a private film shown in Turkey.
between 1924and 1947 "the palestinian people "were jews. explain how they became arabs ???
... funding provocative non-essential Jewish housing in Jerusalem, on requisitioned Pal land...
To read your implication that Obama is somehow arrogant in his pursuit of justice for the Palestinian people, while you defend a country whose government has such a long history of the same, that its considered one of the most defiant and arrogant countries of modern times. So typical of you, Ms Kohn, always finding fault everywhere else EXCEPT where it actually lays.
first of all, if america pays $300 a barrel...imagine how much israel will be payingl; second, you seem to forget WHERE israel's military edge in the middle-east originates; then you ignore the fact that whatever edge israel's been guaranteed, it pales in comparison to that of its benefactor; and finally, you fail to consider that if actions by israel sent oil to $300 a barrel, american AND congressional support for israel would immediately evaporate, leaving it to face its neighbors, and world censure for its extralegal activities, on a level playing field. face it michael, on its own, israel's an insignificant, although inordinately arrogant and troublesome, little player in the wider spectrum of world affairs. "when you f--- with the bull; you get the horn". if israel were to do what your blustering suggests, it would get the horn. it's as simple as that.
....can uproot even an Obama.
The take on this in the US is different. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/19/AR2010031900825.html?wpisrc=nl_pmpolitics
You are SICK!!!
Ms.Clinton has yet again shown the weaknesses of the current Administration. You do not brag. You do not make controversial statements. Least to the press. Diplomacy is best served in these cases as in damage control. For that is true diplomacy. As expected by all parties. Except in cases of populist governments. Has this new US Administration become a populist and bragging entity.? Appalled am I. Meanwhile the Global Jihad is amassing its forces against what they consider childish games by self serving weak kneed, egoistic, amateurish movements by the once greatest superpower on the planet. Watch how Russia is moving into Ukraine,Georgia and Kazakhstan. Watch how China is changing its once steady course with Washington. All because, the real professionals are out of the game, sitting on the bench. Good day.
Well, good luck with finding "true arab friends" in the middle east. You will spend and waste a Lifetime without finding them. But do it your way;try to please them on every occasion and crawl up right into their a.. once in a while. I am sure this will pay off and they will try to kill fewer of you.
Healthcare Plan being forced upon us, contrary to the provisions of the Constitution, is that what you had in mind when you cited "American Interest"? Obama bribing politicians to get his way, in the very best Illinois political style Wait till you get the loads of new taxes to be imposed on you and yours, let's see how American you think that is when the $$$ come out of your wallet
While you're busy playing diplomate, I'll get he's running around with another bimbo
She (Clinton) better takes a very deep breath and a few steps backwards. Israelis are tired off being pushed around. If we are cornered, we might start to kick around. Faster than she can imagine; she will have to justify a price of 300+ $ for a barrel of crude oil in the US. Americans telling us what to do, this is ridiculous.
Remember the Suez Crisis? Seems a bloke called Eisenhower shafted the UK pretty comprehensively because we went against Amerian interests in the region. However having to fall back to an argument about the United states directly interfering in EUropean affairs in pursuit of it's national interests is an interesting one. And could equally be applied to Israel
"And", since you raised the issue, please: 1. give us some details about how "AIPAC [is] under investigation as a foreign agent"; 2. Explain the Foreign Agent Act to us. I suggest that you read it before you explain it; and 3. Distinguish between an American or American group acting under the authority of a foreign country vs. a group of Americans who join together, in the exercise of their right to freedom of speech, to lobby for a cause that would benefit a foreign country.
You say that Clinton is a friend of your enemy so Clinton is your enemy and Obama is your enemy. So I want to ask you, which foreign government leader is the *best* friend of Israel? Do you have a better friend than Obama? This leads to an obvious possibility you ought to consider. Maybe the problem isn't Obama and Clinton. Maybe it's you....
The current Israeli government has been acting like an enemy. So when they hunker down, that's better than when they lay down a heavy field of fire.
you raise a good point about the US dumping Israel and looking for new allies in the region. Not surprising, when you consider how Israel has used the US as a useful idiot for the past few decades, and has betrayed us on so many occasions. The US would serve its interests better if it stops alienating arab and muslim nations, and accepts that we can't bully them forever. After all, our military and economic power is not what it used to be, so we need all the good friends we can get. So far, Israel has been more of a liability than a good friend.
Found this today reading the news. For what it's worth. Disturbing. Dr. Alan Sabrosky, former director of studies at the US Army War College http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsWcQXr1Nk8
You are woefully unprepared to discuss, "territories won in military conflict," and "to the victor go the spoils." On 14 May 1948, under UN resolution 181, Israel declared statehood, with sovereignty within precisely, meticulously detailed borders dictated by the resolution. The remainder of the territory in Palestine was Palestinian. In 1967, Israel occupied the remainder of Palestine. UN resolution 242 then demanded Israel withdraw from the occupied territories. Israel has refused and is in violation of that resolution, and thus international law. Therefore, the West Bank and Gaza, and Jerusalem for that matter, are not legally part of Israel. Israeli built settlements on the occupied lands, the blockade of Gaza, collective punishment of a civilian population, and the annexation of Jerusalem are violations of articles of the 4th Geneva Convention and are considered war crimes. The US is violating no international laws in Guam, Hawaii or anywhere else, you dummy.
Jeremy, you are wrong, Israel IS obliged to act against its "wishes" because: 1) its wishes are against international law; and 2) it is US financial, political and military support which enables Israel to continue to exist and to continue to act in defiance of international law. Therefore the US has every right to insist that the aid which it provides to a client state is used in accordance with international law as well in a way that does not harm US interests. If Israel is not happy with these terms, it is quite welcome to refuse US aid and to stand on its own 2 feet. Ever heard of "he who pays the piper calls the tune"?
# 53 Ron. ....."and a gesture of thumbing a jewish nose at......" etc. And you Ron. What would you call America's role in the killings & wholescale destruction of Iraq & Afghanistan thousands of miles from your shores. Unlike Israel, surrounded by cut-throat regimes, where their charter (Hamas,& Mullah regimes call for the destruction of Israel). Israel is defending herself day in & day out with a relentless barrage of propaganda of hatred & rocketing against our villages, cities,& populations. But your people, according to official Iraqi sources have been the cause of over six hundred thousand Iraqis, killed maimed & disabled for life. In Afghanistan the same Aggression. You'll never succeed. Ask the British, when they were an Empire once And they lost. Same with Russia. One never learns. Israel's situation is different. This is our home. Our enemies are at our door, at our gate. We have to repulse them no matter at what price,& no matter where the chips fall.
It seems to me that just about everything Obama has tried so far has caused Israel to hunker down. I really don't know what to say.
Clinton greeted Arafat's wife with hugs and kisses when she and her husband visited the White House. It must have hurt Clinton terribly to have to court New York Jews to get elected to the Senate. Her hope is the destruction of Israel so she can unleash the antisemites of the US on Jews living here. When life becomes intolerable, there will be no place for us to flee. Just like the 1930s
No problem for one state. Get the arab colonialist mosques out of Jerusalem, allow Jews to have their holiest site back (temple mount), allow Jews equal and unfettred access to Hebron, Schem, Bethlehem and the Jewish holy sites there, and no problem binational whatever you want (even though they don't desrve one inch) just remove the muslim colonialist mosques and minarets. They belong in Saudi. Mohammed never once was in Jerusalem (Mo was a known killer of Jews i.e. Medina), and his dream of al quacksa was simply another anti-semite trying to eradicate the Jews (like the Romans before him)
Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia and the newly "almost nazi" baltic states, be aware of the pay offs coming from your patron USA and read or read again, carefully, Machiavel.
What part of "Never Again" are you (as yet) incapable of understanding???
"Russia that forbid religious practises for 75 yrs, the U.S.A that has separated state and religion, Far-East that has no religion and a Catholic that represents a religion tarnished by pedophilia scandals .... all together tearing apart the religious Holy City of the religious Holy Land of the G-D*s Chosen People!" !. It was the Soviet Union that forbid religious practices. 2.Separation of church and state insures all religions have a say in the Govt. 3.The far east has several religions 4. Catholics are no more responsible for the sins of their clergy than Jews are for the sins of their Rabbis. Gods "chosen people" are of the blood of the Israelites NOT Eastern European Jewish converts like you! The settlements are illegal!!!
... he did not know how to deal with at all... just Condi smiling with Livni, and both of them imponent to move anything on the Pal scene... the Bush years were grand years for the burgeoning settler enterprise... thank goodness they're over...
... yes, thank goodness Obama feels responsibility for what is happening to the Pals... and also to Israel...
Obama's heading for a big fall, in the fall, and again, especially in 2012.
Dino, The hammer, as you so justly wrote. Could well be one of those rubber hammers. You know, the one that bounces, yet you cannot nail down anything. Sure, the news is somewhat elevating. Then again, lets not get our feet off the ground. Ms.Clinton represents the US as its PR gofer in an already mad ME, not to forget her threats to Turkey and harsh words to China etc. Knowing quite well, that no sitting government in Israel has ever stopped building homes in Jerusalem, one can doubt whether the right wing partners of the current coalition will cross their arms and sweat out this impasse. Quoting the headline, "its paying off", is no more than another PR stunt. What is important, is that the PM takes full responsibility and navigates his ship through these treacherous waters with far more care. The snow is fine, lots of skiing. Have a nice day, in Ticino. Stephen.
what one wants, in other words submit the other to one*s WILL. This is what Clinton*s "roaring" was/is about. It is civilized and respectful to talk face-to-face with an eye-contact, person-to-person and hear out everybody*s point of view. In that manner the negotiations should be conducted, in my opinion, and in no situation the Israeli negotiators should accept to be treated with anything less: that even ressembles disrespectful attitude or rhetoric. Israel matters to us. It is important for us to also feel good about a peace arrangement, where our wishes and needs have been taken into account and are respected. We don*t want peace that is designed by others and forced on us. By how the Quartet makes unilateral decisions about the fate of Israel without her presence to judge, I think they need be sent to a course on logotherapy first.
...imbued with 'democratic priciples'...?
Hilda beast is better off trying to appease bubba than trying to make peace in the middle east! Oh ya, she failed at doing that!
" plans for 1,600 new homes in Ramat Shlomo, a Jewish neighborhood" 1st of all it is 50000 new units. 2nd they should not be called homes as they r not built nor inhabited. 3rd: Ramat Shlomo is not a neighborhood it is a settlement on Palestinian occupied land. So stop this illusive pro 'israel' propaganda
One might have thought that Ms. Clinton learned from her husband what diplomacy is. Now first she praised Bibi's faked "settlement freeze" as an "unprecedented restraint" which he misunderstood as a "carte blanche", then she publicly praises her alleged "pressure" put upon him. Who should take her seriously?
My recommendation is that whatever construction of housing for Jewish people in Eretz Israel that irks my president should begin now and if the funds are available double the amount. My president is jealous because our economy is so bad no one is building anything. What is really embarrasing is that thousands of teachers are being laid off in the Chicagoland area because the funds don't exist to pay them. This happens to be the home area of Barak Obama, Hilary Clinton, Rahm Emanuel, David Axelrod, Arne Duncan and many more in the Obama Administration. Maybe they could say and do something about this instead of complaining about Jewish homes in Israel.
... is the chief instigator of every crisis so far... ...only the head orchestrator changes, sometimes its Lieberman, sometimes its Yishai...
You state that it up to Obama to act in US interests. By parity of reasoning, while he no doubt wants to maintain good relations with the US, there is no obligation on Israel to act against its best wishes just because Obama wants it do so.
but it's better than a war. I'm seeing things I don't like like. Can't say what they are because I don't want to offend. To tell you the truth, that dream I had about Egypt a couple of weeks ago was a little odd. Usually what happens I think, is that I drift upwards into some mainstream stream of conciousness or perhaps, it just flows into my head. The stuff if it exists contains a lot of the same stuff that other people are thinking. It's just a theory. But anyway, I think it may be hinting that unless Israel shows that it is together and in control, the US may be thinking of giving more aid to Egypt and not increasing... you see? It's not a threat. It's a calculation. I'm clairvoyant. Remember that. Make peace.
To read your implication that Obama is somehow arrogant in his pursuit of justice for the Palestinian people, while you defend a country whose government has such a long history of it, that its considered one of the most defiant and arrogant countries of modern times. So typical of you, Ms Kohn, always finding fault everywhere else EXCEPT where it actually lays.
An innocent worker is dead. That is the only significant result of Clinton's fun and games. Write it on your nose, Hillary, irresponsible diplomacy costs lives. Your administration is out to lunch! It is time for Congress to take back control of foreign policy on behalf of the American people. Unless you want to wait a few more months or more until the damage to America is so obvious that there is no alternative to impeaching the President. Obama can go on playing with his health care reform but it is time for America to stop bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia. Congress get up off your knees!
Madame Clinton is speaking in past tense about something that has not yet happened...what kind of a method is that?
your platitudes. The US is not Israels defender and Israels essential interest is to survive and prosper , its not to acquiesce to US essential interests. are you advocating the US should go to war with Israel just to please rthe arabs? frankly, i can see the logic in that. this is the slogan often heard through history in many countries "Kill the Jews and save the nation". You know it well. what you don't know is that Jews paid dearly in blood and money to create Israel as an independent sovereign Jewish state. Got it? It is independent, it is sovereign and its Jewish. moeover it is armed to the teeth because it cannot rely on false abd broken promises of fair weather friends like you. do you not think that Israel is unaware of the historical fact that the US always was pro-arab and sided with Arabs whenever it could? Only when the Arabs sided with the USSR in 1952 to 1973 did the US back Israel, and that only in 1973, on;y after the MASSIVE USSR resuply of Egypt and Syria.
instead of posting horse manure bill .look up anglo-american convention 1924 which was incorporated into us alaw !
run in the same gutter...reality alludes you...try not to say anything and avoid drawing attention to yourself
Abbas is ready to recognize Israel as a Jewish State, even if nobody can define that. He's also willing to concede everything Israel conquered before 1967, even though that is expressly forbidden by treaties Israel signed and RATIFIED. What concession is Bibi's Israel offering? Anything?
The arabs refused to attend any negotiations for the very reason that Obama told them in Cairo that he is opposed to settlements including in Jerusalem. so it was Obama who is responsible for the disruption of the direct negotiations. furthermore, the only reason Abbas consented to resume was that he saw Israel building settlements while he twiddled his thumbs. Now that Obama through Clinton again made a scene over the settlements Abbas again broke off talks. In his place so would I. why should I talk and possibly compromise on something when Obama and the Quartet are in fasct forcing my opponent to the wall. they certainly are more powerful than, I, Abbas. Where does that leave Israel and what does it have to negotiate with? Let me see. Israel can withdraw since it has the most powerful army in the region to feel safe? Withdraw to "secure and recognized borders " why not all the way to Masada. A "most powerful army" and "secure and recognized borders" is nonsense. Expel the pals.
You are so wrong...obama does not act in the best interest of the U.S. He is a dangerous man and the sooner you learn the facts the better off you will be. He has been caught in so many lies that his nose is now twice as long. As for the U.S. protecting Israel please tell me when an american soldier fought in a war alongside Israeli's. The answer is never. Israel has never asked for americans to fight their battles..they have asked for arms and have paid back their loans which is more than I can say for the arabs. You are so wrong about obama..so very wrong. Those of us that live stateside see him close up and it is not pretty..what distortions you get in england are doing you a major disservice. I see impeachment in obama's future...good bye to Barack,Michele and mother robinson and good riddance.
didn't the UN declare E. Jerusalem an international city governed by the UN back in 1947? So how did they suddenly get to give it to the Palestinans? Can someone clear that up? If the Pals claim it are they not in violation of the UN charter or some other piece of toilet tissue like it, say like resolution 242?, 1701, xxx, aaa, abc? I don't see why Israel should even be talking to the Quartet or the Arabs. none of them, i reopeat, none of them are there to benefit Israel and its Jews. Don't believe a word they say and don't trust any piece of paper, regardless of how many important signatures are on it. Didn't the US have an iron clad defense alliance with S. Vietnam? and with China (Taiwan)? There are no permanent friends in theis world and Israel must stop hanging on crying like a jilted woman. -- the US is dumping you. Its the Arabs and Muslims that arenow in the parlor and moving into the Whitehouse bedroom where to consummate Obamas declaration of love.
#10 Just like the pressure put on North Koreea and Iran. Obama and his dog and pony show is the laughing stock of the world. He can join the other one term friend of Hamas and rush to the side of Hamas to give aid and comfort. None other then Jimmy Carter.
Its been evident since 1967 that there can be no negotiation with the arabs other than piecemeal surrender because Israel is forced to negotiate with the UN, the US the EU and now Russia (and they all together with the Arabs and Muslims make up the UN). It is these goons who are making the demands on behalf of the arabs and for that reason it makes absolutely no sense for Israel to even bother to talk to the Jew-murderer Abbas and his terrorist gang, who,by the way, are all 100% on the payroll of the above mentioned quartet a.k.a Gang of Four.
Has any body remembered that Hamas has called for the destruction of Israel, and they danced in the streets and handed out candy the day of the 9/11 attack. Obama is the laughing stock of the middle east. He met with the leader of Syria regarding among other things Iran and the next day the Leader of Syria and Iran were on the TV mocking Obama.I guess when you are mocked and goofed on it is time to bully Israel.
A friend of my enemy is my enemy! she is my enemy and so is the administration she represents. they don't represent me nor the many many Americans like me. She is selling us out everywhere. Obama has reduced the US to a dhimmi nation kow towing to the Arabs who have their collective hands manipulating their Palestinian puppets which they created as a spear head to destroy Israel and the US of A. Neither they nor the Europeans will ever be satisfied untill the US is down on its knees, economically, politically and militarily. That, and only that, is what Hussein Obama and Hillary are accomplishing. Israel Si, Palestine No! viva Israel!
we will give up settlements when you vacate the stolen land of California... give it back to mexico.... you knw thge country you illegally invaded in 1848 to expand your nation.
for the 6 or so kassams which have recently hit my country and the family of the person these murderous thugs killed thank you as well.
You will see Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama how it pays off come election time. Do not come around looking for open check books and votes from the American jews. You have tipped your hand at what you are all about. Two words Anti semitism.
You are supporting arab land theives. they stole the land from the jews and murdered their women and children in the process. they have been doing it for the past 2000 years. first as lakey of the romans then as brain dead assasins of Mohamad and his insane followers. Morality is a concept foreign to you and to the Muslims. why don't you expend your time on helping your brethren in somalia, iraq, egypt, nigeria, niger, Yemen and on and on as there is no limit to the number of muslim countries on earth. You could start by complaining about the EU and US soldiers killing your "innocent" Muslim brothers all over the world. That ought to keep you productively occupied.
Does anyone really pay any attention to when the US gets 'offended' by Israel? Nothing ever comes of it. I can't think of a single time. Not one. It's almost habitual, like a familiar dance of offense, apology, regret, stern speech, finger-wagging, and no actual action...or at the worst, some non-binding UN 'condemnation', which, let's face it, Israel is stopped by that about as much as by a wet napkin. Israel could care less about world opinion, so long as it doesn't affect the bottom line, facts on the ground. The US often plays lip-service to the notion of 'condemning' an Israeli action, but watch what happens if it goes to the security council...the US will veto it, and Israel knows this. It all feels so phony.
give it up faker
no more expansionist theocracy....we got peace in palestine or at least very close to it....praise the lord!!
The Jewish exodus from Arab lands refers to the 20th century expulsion and mass departure of Jews, primarily of Sephardi and Mizrahi background, from Arab and Islamic countries. The migration started in the late 19th century, but accelerated after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Between 800,000-1,000,000 Jews were forced to leave their homes in Arab countries due to persecution and anti-Semitism. With assets seized
yes, and technically every prez for nearly 40 years has been telling them to stop building but i think he is the second to try to make em, the first one got bonkered by the election. Hopefully us has got the guts to not let an intrest group make them do something that is detrimental to its international policy (dem and rep prez have been saying it) and heck, just have them pull out everything out of m.e. to be neutral. Infact iran needs to up it, they should say we agree with having UN check on our nuclear power plants to see that we are not making any nukes aslong as all the M.E. countries agree to have them inspected. INCLUDING ISRAEL.
thats what i have been saying. either they all join as one state and lets see how long israel is a jewish state unless it is an apartheid nation and denies the israel arabs rights, or it moves back, heck nobody says that they stay in the same zone as they used to be when they were created, if i am correct they inco-operated alot of lands after wars, its just that they are told to give back "some" of them back.
As I said before, Bibi should show that he deserves better than the scolds. He needs to show that he does not respect someone who is not even in Israel to lecture him. He should have called Hillary and objected her way of talking. Bibi you are the chief in Israel, why do you have to subdue to Hillary the muslim follower? Too sad... You should have had firm principle of never move toward this pressure... Even North Korea never give up, Iran never gives up, Russia never gives up.. Even Syria and Iran insulted her, she still sends ambassador to Syria.. If George Bush were still the President none of these ever happened.. Better be USA enemy and you will gain respect.. Better not to be friend as you will be pressed hard illegally. Remember your responsibility is to Israel not USA.
Your preposterous statement that Abbas's Fatah party never called for violence over the rededication of the Hurva Synagogue certainly falls apart when any objective person searches Google with "Fatah", "Hurva" and "Synagogue" and finds dozens of hits describing Fatah officials Dahlan and Abdel-Kader doing exactly that. And why would Obama claim he DID strongly condemn this encitement, but that the news media "missed it"(!) - if call for violence never happened? Diplomats and others interested in peace do not deliberately "excalate" situations, hoping that it will "pay off". That is something 2-bit political hacks do, hoping to advance their careers, something Hilary and Obama have some skill at, you'll agree. As you can tell from other posts, everyone is having a hard time understanding how the term "paying-off" can fit in here. Maybe "paying-off" is correct word in context of husband Bill's $10 million "consulting contract" with Saudi Arabia. Does she think this won't be investigated?
You cannot compare a farmer with a shoulder fired rocket and the scores of attack helicopters used by the IAF
It is a positive development to see President Obama FINALLY developing a spine to stand up to Netanyahu and his right wing supporters. It is long overdue the U.S. demand that Israel comply with Internattional Law, binding UNSC resolutions and ICJ rulings at the Hague. The reaction of the right wing should not concern him at all just like it doesn't concern myself. A Israel - Palestine peace agreement is absolutely essential to U.S. interests and it is important to Israel and Palestine as well. Don't back down President Obama.
Abbas does not need to negotiate anything. The world is slowly coming around to the conclusion that whenever the the peace process starts to get somewhere Israel does something to stop it. Time is up Israel start removing your settlement buildings on big trailers back into pre 1967 lines.
The US expended time, effort and goodwill to attempt to put together a peace talk agreement. For Israel, to declare, one day after the US announcement that agreement to begin peace talks had been reached, plans to build new housing units in disputed E. Jerusalem was an affront and an insult to the US, and the Palestinians: and a gesture of thumbing a Jewish nose at the UN, the EU and the entire international community. The Israeli announcement was a declaration that Israel is determined to continue its violation of UN resolutions, and the 4th Geneva Convention and ignore its lack of a legal basis for sovereignty in Jerusalem. If a conflagration should erupt, the US should declare neutrality, and cease all financial, military and political aid and support to both sides. It should hold Israel as an aggressor and endorse such a UNSC declaration.
Don, I agree that it works both ways. But, I am not aware of having done that. Please if you know when and were, help me out.
If you are the voice of reason, may the Lord save us from reason.
if I were Israelis I'd take a good long look at the kassam that killed the Thai worker...look well at it and savor its meaning...and then, I'd tell Clinton and the phony arab peacemakers where to stick their mendacious peace (if Obama, Clinton, and others get their way and Israel caves, Israelis will be seeing a lot of kassams).
There's an old American story of a man who was faced with a recalcitrant mule. He walked up to it and hit it over the head with a club. When asked why he did that, he explained that's how he got its attention. The story comes to mind.
that killed a Thai. Thank you Hillary for supporting terrorism.
There was no US admission of harmless nature of Yishai declaration, and no fraudulent claim involved in Clinton comments, nor article reporting them. To fantasize data with a lack of inferential comprehension skills may make it difficult for you to understand that for Israel to announce plans to start new housing units in disputed E. Jerusalem one day after a US statement that an agreement to begin peace talks had been reached, constituted an insult and an affront to the US, and its efforts to put together the peace process. Everyone, but you, knows that Israel has no legal basis for sovereignty in Jerusalem and its annexation of the city is a violation of the 4th Geneva Convention. The Israeli announcement was an attempt to derail the peace process. And you claim Obamas and Clintons credibility have been destroyed. Are you nuts? Abbas and Fatah did not call for violence at Hurva Synagogue. That is a lie: but is not your first in these postings.
Nearly everything (with occasional exceptions) that the US says seems well considered. Not so for Israel, but that doesn't really matter, and in fact makes it easier for the US to move to a position of something like impartiality. For all that, success can only mean borders are defined, Jerusalem principles are sorted; and the solutions to these are as we all know: Close to 67 borders with some give and take; Jerusalem as the capital of both- unless Israel wants to keep its capital in Tel Aviv. The US will push for early and definitive decisions on both. Can Netanyahu and his current motley crew deliver? The Palestinians need to grab the chance, unless they actually want a one state solution. (On this maybe Hamas does).
US disengagement from the region now. It is nothing but a morass.
Abbas has no authority to negotiate with Israel. This has nothing to do with who is PM of Israel or what happens in Jerusalem or anywhere else. The fact of the matter is that Abbas is too weak and without backing from his own people. Obama needs negotiations for his own political future, so maybe they could have indirect talks limited to discussing the shape of the table that will be used in twenty years or so when the palestinians are ready for real negotiations. Abbas might be able to sell his own people on an agreement to use a rectangular table vice a round one, without risking his own assassination by Hamas. That would allow Obama to claim a great foreign policy success and not do too much damage.
Hans it works both ways, Bibi Is our PM, he speaks for us. You may disagree with our policies, but please stick to the facts. Don't make unfounded claims and wild charges
Mrs.Clinton. Sec.of State USA. Don't brag. You might have won a fleeting 'victory', but in the long run,by a force that is developing from within; movement will always tend to go forward. As long as all criticisms are laid on Israel's lap,& none on the other side the Palestines. They will as usual get the wrong message,& become even more intransigent. Thereby bringing all America's effort to nought. What might be the outcome ? Another conflagration. And America will have to honestly see what role she played in all this entanglement.
Same old Netanyahu--always folds when the heat is really on. Did the same thing in his first administration with Wye and the Mashal fiasco. His incompetence will lead him into blundering away precisely those things which his ideology won't let him do.
Like the subject heading says...mixed signals by our so called friends in the white house is an insult
Clinton caves on Iran but beats up Israel http://weeklystandard.com/blogs/clinton-bows-russian-support-iran
Does this woman actually think she's on top of things?! Bibi is merely buying time to build more housing in East Jerusalem. I support Israel and they should be allowed to build anywhere they choose. I'd also like to see Obama give back all the land the European settlers stole from Native-Americans before they ask Israel to give up one inch of land that has always been rightfully theirs. And let the Arab countries take in the Palestinians if they care so much about them.
Israel had better listen up, the yanks are getting fed up with excuses for the illegal occupation of the west bank and east Jerusalem. Get your asses behind the green line rfn.
Losing support for her party from pro-Israel progressive like myself. What a disappointment. At least Boxer has a clue as to what's happening.
it is the arab/muslims that are the thieves. one example. building a mosque on top of a synogogue. pals... get out of jerusalem. you are illegaly occupying jewish land. squatters, i believe is the correct term.
You seem to forget one important thing: Israel depends on the US for its survival, not the other way round. So it is Bibi who needs to prove himself trustworthy and obedient, not Obama. You remember that.
That's all. Nobody gets to leave either. I don't care if Hillary has to glue the pants of both Abbas and Netanyahu both to their chairs. Diapers!
Obama is the president of the USA, not Israel. He acts in our interests, not Israel's. So why don't you guys stop your whinging and consider yourselves lucky we still are prepared to protect you. We are right behind you Mr President.
remind me whose land are you living on ? mind boggling ignorance of what is going on in the world.... the americas n + sth are examples of pure land theft that is continuing as we speak.....amazonian injuns losing their forests to portuguese speakers !
she sweet-talked the zio lobby till she got to high office, then the gloves came off. let's see if they can get her out.
I love Israel. In many ways it is free and democratic, but you can't divide a city into ghettos. That is not democratic. People who live in Jerusalem should be able to buy a house wherever they want. As a Jew I should be free to build in, and move in to, any area of the city, East or West. Arabs, Christians and anyone else should be free to do the same. Mixed neighbourhoods. That's democratic.
Admission that US was aware of harmless nature of Yishai's municipal planning announcement - no actual "facts on the ground" for years, if ever - and chose to artificially escalate the matter with fraudulant claim (knowing it was untrue) Bibi had deliberately insulted the US - has just permanently destroyed Clinton's and Obama's credibility, enraging US voters. Who deals with a sleazy four-flusher like this? Obama will get nothing but lip-service from Bibi, he can't be trusted. Obama failure to also publically denounce Abbas and his Fatah organization for calling for massive violence over Israel's Hurva Synagogue rededication establishes convincingly that its Obama who is not interested in peace. So damning was this omission, when asked about it in an interview, why no public condemnation, no demand PA also prove its commitment to peace, Obama decided to LIE about it, claiming he HAD, media missed it! This clumsy liar be now be exposed. Israel will never trust this cheap con artist.
I will agree with Clinton that it 'is paying off' ten years from now, provided her action results into piece for 9 years in a row, no more rockets hitting Israel, Arabs recognizing Israel in words and deeds. A deal Mrs Clinton ?
Keep dreaming Heather. BTW as an American living in Milwaukee it is pretty classless to express your extremist right wing American puke on the website of a foreign publication. Stand up and fight your battles internally, were they belong.
not stop at nothing to get more bombs in Israel's back yards! they will socialize the US bring it down to its knees militarily and bring down Israel with it! If Israel caves to these strong arms in dc they will be showing nothing less than weakness and the arab's will be throwing it in Israel's faces once again! Tell obama/clinton to start strong arming iran until they complete that mission to stay the hell out of Israel's back yards!they are cursing the US! "I will bless those who bless thee and curse those who curse thee" bombs and murderers boasting is not blessing Israel,it is cursing them right along with the people of the US with it!
he does rule by the democratic process...if you think he should take into consideration some little jewish girl whoo wants to steal land in the ME but live in germany you are very much mistaken....obama is president of USA not of your wants and fantasies..i voted for him (and you cant) and am satisfied :)
Hillary is just happy to have something to say and do as far as forign policy is concerned. She has been shelved by Obama and really has nothing to do other than travel around the world and attend funerals and conferances. Once in a while Obama unleashes her so he doesent have to look like the rabid dog, and she does. Such is the case in the last week between her and Bibi. There is no doubt that she hasnt stopped any building anywhere in Jerusalem, or even the west bank. Its a hollow victory for her, and a reason for Obama to throw her a milk bone. Now back to her cage till he needs her again.
Barak Obama is our President. He speaks for us, the US. To attack our President is to attack America. You may disagree with our policies, but please stick with the facts. Don't make unfounded claims and wild charges.
Hypocrisy? According to you, since israel conquered east jerusalem and the west bank, all that territory is now theirs... nevermind that international law says otherwise. If you're ready to declare that land a part of Israel, you'd better also be ready to grant full citizenship to everyone born on that land. That's the difference between Israel's palestine conquest and the U.S.'s 19th century acquisition of Guam or Hawaii. You can't rule over a people without enfranchising them. It's a human right. It's either accept a two state solution, or else accept a one-state solution in which Israel becomes a nation of all its inhabitants rather than its Jewish ones. Not a Jewish nation, but simply a nation. I think you'd rather just give them back their stolen land.
Oh I cannot wait until the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob brings His wrath down on those who persecute His chosen people. For the last time, the land that Israel occupies belongs to the Jews by Divine right and also it belongs to them by military conquest. But regardless of the military victories, God Himself, YHWH (I AM) has given the land to the Jews and when He promises something it cannot be annulled by anyone and that includes the United States! Israel is wasting their time talking to the Arabs (and that includes the so-called Palestinians) about peace. Until the Prince of Peace returns there will be no peace. Note: There is coming a world ruler who will bring a false peace for approximately 3-1/2 years but then he will show his true nature which is pure evil and the wrath of God will bring him to his end.
You wrote: "Have the Arabs made any concessions? Will they stop calling the U.S. weak?" Julianna will the time ever come when you and others stop asking the "Arabs" to make concessions? Do not overreach because of some mythic sense of special entitlement. As to what the "Arabs" may or may not call the US, who cares. What is needed right now is a commitment to serious and honest peace negotiations. Israel could do worse than to have Hillary Clinton and the Americans on it's side.
If the goal is to resume peace negotiations and Abbas continues to refuse to come back to the proximity table it is completely unclear how the row with Israel has paid off. If anything peace prospects have been set back even more.
in the field of relations between the far left Obama administration and the right wing Netanyahu coalition gov't . Such seeds of tensions are cultivated by the far left to manipulate the Obama administration to serve the OIC-Arab League interests against the Jewish State . Lieberman must speak at the upcoming AIPAC summit .
"While under the Bush administration, negotiations were ongoing with Abbas on a regular basis" can you tell us, if Palestinians have gained anything with those negotiations? can you also tell us how many settlements were built by Israel in occupied land!! I know you guys were able to achieve a lot during Bush era, from killing Arafat and more than 3 thousand other Palestinians and take their homes and national resources ...; you see, you guys act like and talk like occupiers and still play the victim card.
So, if I understand: 1. If your grandfather gave you a piece of land, you hadn't visited it in many years, came back and discovered someone living on it, that would be ok? 2. after chasing them off, your neighbors decided you couldn't build on it and that would be ok? 3. You built a home on it anyway, someone came and ran a semi-tractor trailer over your house, killing your wife and kids, and your only response would be 'don't worry about it'? And if you did catch or kill the culprit, all your neighbors call you a murderer?! Sounds like this is what you're saying?
Please consider that there never was an Israeli government with such powerful extremists like Lieberman and Shas. And they are, of course, the loudests. That, among many other aspects, enhanced by ignorant boorishness (der Lieber man) and stupidity (der Shasnik).
i understand the weather is even better this yr in tel aviv...you could make aliyah and never come back and i swear we wouldn't mind :)
What did Clinton promise and not deliver to the Israeli Government? The return of Shalit? How could Israel deal with Hamas without an important move from them?
you do not understand. obama is convinced he is right, and furthermore, he is convinced that he has the power, authority and the right to act as he does. obama is not imbued with democratic principles. best regards, cipora
politics make strange bedfellows and the enemy of my enemy is my friend...cheers! viva la palestine
Civil dialogue works and leads the way to peace. Let's hope all parties keep that lesson in mind during the peace talks that must contine. Civility. Respect. Dialogue. @pax101
was hilkary got bibi over a rock and won't let him up...so get over it
to be such a sore loser :)
obama, hilary, biden and honest dealing according to law? is it because bibi is jewish? if he were my kin i would dis-own him...but there is no explaining some peoples taste or lack of morals...did i mention you are all criminally insane? enjoy the ride
western europe is biggest recipient of usd aid and dead us soldiers...... should europe do everything she is told to do by Uncle Sam. It would appear that you dont realise that europe would not exist without usa.
and see what help you get when it comes to iran one hand washes the other - but in your country it sems the US is to only wash your hand
It is rather pathetic to see all of the people eager to tell Israel what to do with their "occupied territories". What would the U.S. say if the world told us to give up Guam, or Hawaii or perhaps most of the continental United States? Israel won these territories in millitary conflict. Israel was forced into a preemptive defensive action in the Six Day war. The "occupied territories" are Israels to do with as she chooses. "To the victor goes the spoils". I hope and pray that all of my American Jewish brethren put any and all pressure that we can on our pathetic administration to have them cease strong-arming Israel into a one-sided peace process.
in the face she got in Moscow. Seems like US has no more leadership capabilities. They've been rendered a pin cushion by Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia and China. The US has lost its way. Thank you kindly Mr. Bush for the pitiful place you put the world. I hope you live comfortably on the millions you made playing at the global poker table.
The picture you showing of Ms. Clinton in Russia, reminds me of Napoleon with the Great Army, defeated and unhappy trying to find a mean to return as a "Hero" to Paris. But also it reminds me of Napoleon being exiled to St Helena Island. (wow! its so appropriate in our days, 200years later?!)
Is Iran ready to give up its nuclear program? Is Russia ready to support serious sanctions? Is China? Have the Arabs made any concessions? Will they stop calling the U.S. weak? Will Syria stop supporting terror? Will Syria give up its defence pact with Iran? Will Iran stop enabling those who murder American soldiers?
The Obama manufactured crisis, diligently supported by the media, has wrought great triumph for the White House. We have seen days of Qassam rockets, with one dead, and we have seen days of rioting in Jerusalem. While under the Bush administration, negotiations were ongoing with Abbas on a regular basis, Obama needed to manufacture a crisis just to start so-called "proximity talks."
Israel will be thriving and flourishing. By the way, is Gaza meant to part of the 2 state solution and negotiations? What pressure to be brought on Hamas? Just wondering.
Hillary, Bibi is playing you and your boss the way Russia is playing you. You see, your boss is on his way out soon. Come November, your party will be a minority in Congress. The so-called red states are already drafting legislation to counter Obama's domestic policies. You're about to lose all us Jewish voters over your condescending attitude toward Israel, among other things. It's not looking too good for you, so pack your bags. You're going back home to Bill.
It seems the US still feels it can dictate to other nations. Good old fashioned American imperialism is alive and well; but it's taken an ugly cast since Mr Obama became president. Rather than escalating rows with nasty dictators who really threaten the peace of the world, like Ahmadinejad, Chavez, and Kim, Mr Obama would much rather rail - loudly, insistently, and publicly - against fellow democracy and ally, Israel. Those who have followed my posts know I am critical of the Jewish building programme beyond the Green Line, and no friend of Netanyahu - but there is a right and a wrong way to practice diplomacy. And rather than patting themselves on the back, Obama, Clinton, and the rest of that lot ought to apologise to Netanyahu for they way America has conducted itself. Privately, of course. That's the way it's supposed to be done. Then they can apologise to the rest of us for mollycoddling a bunch of tin-horn dictators - publicly, of course. MV
It is rather pathetic to see Hilary fawning to the BBC which is notorious for its anti-Israel programming (eg. Panorama- Denying Jewish rights to Jerusalem). I never had much respect for her but what little I once had is gone.
if we stick to our guns and keep up the pressure, there is absolutely nothing Israel can do but submit to the demands of the international community. They can run, but they certainly cannot hide.
... Lieberman doesn't agree with the Quartet, therefore Bibi tells him to object all by himself, if that's what he wants, and see what happens next. This way Lieberman probably gets himself out of the picture. This thing looks like a coup by Lieberman against Netanyahu, but it is exactly the opposite - a coup that is, but against Lieberman himself. At least, I hope so.
Russia that forbid religious practises for 75 yrs, the U.S.A that has separated state and religion, Far-East that has no religion and a Catholic that represents a religion tarnished by pedophilia scandals .... all together tearing apart the religious Holy City of the religious Holy Land of the G-D*s Chosen People! What a satire!
It very much looks like the Obama administra- tion (and the majority of the U.S. public) have finally come to the conclusion, that our highly esteemed friends in Israel once in a while only understand the "language of the hammer". The eternal Israeli diplomatical weapon Shimon Peres ("Mr. Nice words") has obviously slowly but surely lost its effect, but hey, if "the hammer" is in the long term interest of the Israeli people (as well as the Jewish Diaspora abroad) there is absolutely no reason to be sad or disappointed. Those are good news for you, my Israeli friends, even if you aren't (yet) capable or realizing it.....
Depends on your Zionist views. In all cases we want real American interest promoting first and foremost.
In 1974,the "democrats" lost the Congress in the mid term ellections for far lesser reasons that the present Congress is accumulating...The clouds over Israel will blow away coming November
TO accept peace, Israel would have to give up settlement expansion and give up a lot of settlements. Israel will not do this simply because an American official speaks some sharp words. To engage Israel in meaningful peace talks, America would first have to cut all support to Israel. Anything less will not bring any better progress than we have seen many times before. Israel simply goes through the motions and waits out the American government.
foxman being laughed out of town, i cant see bibi has any choice but to do what he is told...as far as kadima in and leiberman out...thats looking better all the time.....
Once more Israel is getting away with taking both money and dignity from the US.
