China rejects Israel's call for tougher sanctions against Iran

China: Peaceful resolution through talks is best choice to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

By Reuters Tags: Iran China

China and Israel emerged from talks on Iran's nuclear future on Tuesday with each side sticking to divergent positions on whether additional United Nations sanctions would help defuse the standoff.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was in Beijing seeking to persuade China to back tougher economic restrictions on Tehran unless it curtails nuclear activities that Western powers say are aimed at making nuclear weapons.

"We believe that there's a need to enhance the sanctions in order to stop Iran," Livni told a news conference after meetings with senior Chinese officials. "We believe that there is a need for more sanctions in the United Nations Security Council."

Livni added that Iran was abusing other powers' willingness to negotiate and would only rein in its nuclear activities under stiffer sanctions.

Responding to Livni's message, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman underscored his country's stance that a negotiated settlement was still viable.

"We believe that a peaceful resolution of the Iran issue through negotiation is the best choice," spokesman Liu Jianchao told a news conference. "China has always maintained that in international relations sanctions should not be rashly applied."

The exchange of views suggested that Beijing - along with Russia - remains wary of a proposed fresh round of UN sanctions that Israel, Washington and other Western powers want considered. China's permanent seat on the UN Security Council gives it the power to veto such moves.

Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency agreed in August on a timetable to answer outstanding questions about the country's atomic activities, prompting world powers to postpone a third round of UN sanctions until at least November.

But U.S. officials have said there was no sign that Iran was going to suspend uranium enrichment, and Washington slapped new unilateral sanctions on Tehran last week. Increasingly angry rhetoric between the two sides has also fed speculation of a U.S. military strike.

Iran has shrugged off two earlier rounds of sanctions, which China backed, and Livni has said tougher measures were needed to raise domestic pressure on the Iranian government to make nuclear concessions.

Iran is China's third biggest supplier of imported crude oil, behind Angola and Saudi Arabia.

"We should avoid making the problem more complicated," spokesman Liu said.

Sino-Israel relationship: A central concern of the next decade
    • Aston Kwok

    • 00:59

I would like to make the point that the delicate relationship between Israel and China is of critical importance for the next decade, and it pays well for the government of Israel to invest some energy into this. China is a strategic rival to the US, and has tended to perceive Israel in that context. As we shift from unipolar world back to a multi-polar world, Israel needs to make some critical adjustments in the way it positions itself in the world. Here are some of my realpolitik advice for the Israeli government: 1. Refrain from criticizing China over its human rights record. This might include demonstrating some 'sensitivity' towards Chinese government's 'concerns', and not voting with US in the General Assembly on issues of critical concerns to the Chinese. 2. Refrain from contacts with the Dalai Lama, even on an unofficial level. 3. Increase educational exchange with China. 4. Make the painful shift to full renewable energy and lessen dependence on oil.

China don't support the US they are always against capitalism. Its better to buy the products from other country who supports the US rather than "Made in china".

China's rise as a geopolitical player is positive in the sense that adds pressure to a fair negotiation between Arabs and the Israeli state. The latter will have no choice but to abandon its double standards policy, make some fair concessions (such as remove west bank settlements from occupied land), or face harsh consequences.

The topic has degenerated into (bad) religious wrangling. To the uniformed one who brought up the trinity - Jesus and the holy ghost are merely other aspects that the Lord chose to reveal himself in..as he has with a burning bush, pillar of fire, voices, the angelic being that wrestled Jacob, etc. Nothing more, nothing less. I truly loved the idea of israel recognizing Taiwan and giving them nuclear technology. Great idea! Again to the uninformed, the US does have a tired ground force (Army and Marine Corps) but only a fraction of which are deployed at any one time. The US can send millions of ground troops into Iraq if it so chooses. The US air force and Navy are quite rested and fit. Three days is what the experts say it would take the US to completely obliterate all Iranian military units. We don't NEED to occupy the country. Russia and China cannot project power. They have pathetic navies. The Chinese cannot even feed themselves. They need US trade badly.

The US are informed about it at least since 1992 when the head of the Iranian military program defected to the West" then "Iranian opposition groups have said that the first nuclear material will be ready in a matter of months" So Iran has been producing nuclear weapons since 1992 and then the first nuclear material will be ready in months? China will import as much oil as will be necessary to keep her economy going. But what will be the use if noone has fresh water to drink. China is suffering from major water pollution of their lakes and rivers. Their desert area is creeping forward due to loss of vegetation. The Chinese have already started to use technology imported from Israel to clean up their water problems. The Chinese are not stupid. They will not give into Livni on the Iranian nuclear matter but on the other hand the Chinese will not shove Israel aside either. Water sustains life. You cannot drink the oil.

Livni did not go to china expecting an immediate change in China's position. She went there to tell the Chinese that Israel's concern is independent of the USA's policy and to explain them where Israel's concerns come from. She wanted to be sure that the Chinese understand their point of view so as not to claim in the future: why did u not tell us. I doubt if Livni expected results immediately. How her trip might affect Chinese actions in the future remains to be seen. I would not assume that her trip will have no rewards.

Both the United States and Israel have chosen to be ruled by idiots. Mindlessly aggressive, utterly imprudent, and hopelessly incompetent idiots. Those who would like to see the US weakened have had their prayers answered by the man the Supreme Junta appointed Resident. Enemies of Israel no doubt are happy with his equally inept side kick, Ehud Olmert. Both Russia and China understand that the threat of an Iranian bomb is not imminent (despite predictions from Israeli intelligence (is that the proper word?) that it would be a fact by now. Thus they are more than willing to thwart further sanctions and dispute further incitements by the deranged US and incompetent Israeli regimes. It is a win-win situation for Russia and China. If the maniacs do not attack Iran, they can take some credit. If we do, then they win big. There is no way out for the US and Israel unless incompetence is ousted and leadership imposed.

"Neither Russia nor China cares if Israel exists and Israel has absolutely nothing to offer either to get them to care even a little bit." And what of it? Russia and China may not care about Israel, but neither do they feel threatened by it. In the back of their mind, the Russians are all too aware that the fanatical Islamist regime of Iran is trying to expand its tentacles in former Soviet republics, Russia's back yard, and China is aware of the expansion of radical Islam on its flanks. If radical Islamist regimes get hold of nukes, Russia and China ain't going to be their natural allies. Ultimately, the entire "Dar al Harb" will be threatened, not just Israel. For now, China is guided by economic necessity alone.

The world should not listen to two communist nations which trreat their own citizens worse than we do our enemies. China is in an econmic meltdown bc their child slave work shops have been exposed. their production of exports is resulting in deaths and suicide of company CEO's and the international market is losing faith in China. As for Russia, they only care about one thing...the fall of US from the top. Funny how all the China/Russia supporters say nothing of the ills which come from these two nations. As long as they are opposed to Israel and the US, they can go on killing innocent people and denying human beings of their basic rights. PATHETIC!!!

Yes the Neighborhood is getting Nuclear, and nobody can stop PROGRESS,if there is too much fuss about from some countries, then these countries will go undergrounds rathen than having open activities. True it is about time that Israel make FRIENDS instead of ENEMIES with the 57 MUSLIM countries. That is why ISRAEL should not let the ARAB PEACE INITIATIVE slip their hands; so far THIS is the best deal the ISRAELIS will ever had. They should remember that once this deal is off the table, it will NEVER SURFACE BACK AGAIN.

Mike claims that "Without Iranian problems, the middle east will quickly settle down," Really? Just like Bush said the fall of Saddam would lead to Pro-western democracies throughout the middle east? We can see how THAT plan worked... The idea of "Pax Americana" achieved through violent overthrow of middle eastern gov'ts has been proven to be completely failure. Why do you claim it will suddenly work on Iran when it has failed in Iraq and Afghanistan? Destroying the Iranian civilian nuclear sites that the IAEA has confirmed NOT to be used for weapons development will only exacerbate problems with Iran. There will be no "settling down" as you claim. Even if Iran were to be invaded and occupied for ETERNITY, the middle east would not settle down. Saudi Arabia would then reign supreme. Without Iran or Iraq to worry about, the Saudi Wahhabi nuts would force Wahhabism on the region. I would rather face Iran. Your ideas won't work, and have already been proven wrong

As El-Baradei has confirmed in the last few days, there is still no evidence of an Iranian bomb program. Neither the US or France or the UK nor Israel has deigned to provide anything to the IAEA for them to pursue. Does such evidence exist at all? Despite Podhoretz and the neocon group, Bush and his spokes people keep saying that they have no wish for war. Maybe even they understand that Iran might fight back and it might take half a million troops to conquer and occupy Iran - troops nobody seems to want to donate, not the US and not Israel. So why the sabre rattling? In a tight world oil market, any nervousness drives the price of oil higher. Higher prices = bigger profits for Bush/Cheney cronies. Higher prices = higher costs for China's economy. China counters with NO to sabre rattling and sanctions. Still looking for evidence.

"Book of Revelation reveals that the Dragon is Satan" The writer of Revelation would have benefited from a course of modern anti-psychotic drugs. So dodgy is this book that it very nearly didn't make it into the canon, It was rejected by the Synod of Laodicea in 365AD and it wasn't until 397AD that it finally made it into the collection we now call "The Bible".

This is how the nazis operated, the inquisition, and any other persecution of one god over another. First of all, most Chineese who are not Atheist (which most of the western world is, only they pretend to be religious) or Buddhist, Buddhism is based on the Bhagavad Gita, a book, from a religion that is much more older and sophisticated than you archaic 'my god is bigger than your god' book. There has NEVER been a war to spread Hinduism or Buddhism...yet there has been millions who have died in misery to please your god. At least the jews had their religion set nicely for their culture and time, you gentiles of the west perverted it with Christianity and Islam, and ironically, it seems you directed that perversion to those who conceived of the initial philosophy, the jews.

The time to involve China in efforts to control Iran's nuclear weapons production was 2001. Back then China did not have such a large financial and business interests in that country. Of course in 2001, the Bush administration could not care less about Iran. US involvement was required, and that did not happen until 2005. As usually, the Bush administration was too late in recognizing a real threat to world security.

Naturally China wants the middle east status quo. China needs fuel from Iran as well as American money. Cutting back on either will devastate their economy. America is spending themselves into bankruptcy in Iraq, because of Iran. This boosts china's economy in the process as well as its future status when America finally is forced to withdraw. Without Iranian problems, the middle east will quickly settle down, and world attention will focus on problems in China's backyard..their brutal occupation of Tibet, the problems in North Korea, and the Taiwan issue for example. In the end, it doesn't matter what China or any other nation says. The US without any doubt will destroy the Iranian nuclear sites and the rest of the world has no choice at all but to like it.

    The Dragon vs The WORD
    • Brod
    • 30.10.07
    • 16:38

China worships the Dragon since ancient time. The Book of Revelation reveals that the Dragon is Satan. The same Dragon is the god of Antisemites and Islamist-Jihadists. The Dragon hates the GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jocob, the GOD of the Holy Bible, and the GOD of the Ten Commandments. Hence, the Dragon's followers share a common aversion for GOD's people who brought GOD's Holy Bible to the world. The road to paradise may seem murky now. But we all know that in the End Time, the Dragon and his forces will all end up in the Lake of Fire, and GOD will bring His followers to Heaven where there will be no more tears, sufferings, pain, sickness, deaths and wars. There is no point seeking help and cooperation from the dark forces of the world. GOD is the ultimate Source of Help, Wisdom and Strength against the Dragon and his followers.

Israelis should probably prepare themselves for a vastly different future than they have anticipated. Russia and China are increasing in geo-political power and the US is declining. Neither Russia nor China cares if Israel exists and Israel has absolutely nothing to offer either to get them to care even a little bit. Yea, I have heard all the Israeli bragging about how great they are with technology, but the reality is both Russia and China have similar OR BETTER capability. If the US/Israel start a war in the ME, Russia and China will probably finish it and Israel will cease to exist in the process and there will be absolutely NOTHING the US can do about it. The sad fact is the US has made itself extremely vulnerable to Russia, China and Iran, so Israel is basically out on a limb politically and militarily. I wouldn't want to be living in Israel, since it has a big target on it.

    • Jonathan S
    • 30.10.07
    • 15:23

During his tour in the Gulf region French DM Herve Morin said yesterday that he has informations that Iran is producing nuclear weapons. The US are informed about it at least since 1992 when the head of the Iranian military program defected to the West. A German TV team hunted him down and found him in the US, so that everyone who wants to know about the military nature of the program is now able to do so. That the material for the bomb came from Europe and here mainly from Germany is well documented by various German publications. The diplomacy of Tzipi Livni is another failure on her long list of mistakes. But the US could persuade China to abstain during a vote for new sanctions. But it is doubtful if it is not too late for sanctions to work. Iranian opposition groups have said that the first nuclear material will be ready in a matter of months.
