China rejects Iran sanctions, pushes for diplomatic solution

China Foreign Ministry spokesman: Diplomatic efforts on Iran nuclear standoff haven't been exhausted.

By The Associated Press Tags: China UN Iran nuclear Israel news

China said Thursday it will continue to push for a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear standoff, rebuffing efforts by Western powers to introduce a new set of sanctions against Iran.

"We've been making diplomatic efforts and we believe they have not been exhausted, and we will continue to work with other parties to push for a settlement to this issue," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang.

The proposed sanctions would target Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard and toughen existing measures against its shipping, banking and insurance sectors, well-informed UN diplomats said Wednesday.

The U.S., Britain and France support such new sanctions, and Russia - which is normally opposed - appears to be moving closer to that view. That leaves only permanent Security Council member China - which depends on Iran for much of its energy needs - opposed to new sanctions.

The Security Council's five permanent members have veto power, so China could block council sanctions, although it is more likely to abstain if the other four are in support.

Qin said China would continue to work toward the resumption of talks on the issue and make constructive efforts for a proper resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations.

Iran is already under three sets of Security Council sanctions meant to punish its refusal to freeze its uranium enrichment program, which can be re-engineered to produce highly enriched, weapons grade uranium instead of its present low-enriched output.

Tehran insists it is enriching only to produce fuel for an envisaged nuclear power network.

Perhaps China would be more willing to co-operate if Israel showed any respect for UN decisions (How many Resolutions has Israel violated?), then just trying to force more actions against anyone Israel deems an enemy.

Because that dictatorship intends to protect Iran from any credible pressure, Israel will be forced to attack Iran to stop their atomic weapons program, thus causing the next war and untold economic disruption to the world. China should be expelled from the UN for gross irresponsibility and the world should proceed to sanction Iran so that its program stops for good, for the peace of the world.

What's amazing is the number of Israelis and Americans who want to destroy what is left of any vestige of America being able to either defend itself or have any independence in its foreign policy as we go bankrupt as a nation and our military is broken beyond repair. The strident America bashers cheer leading for American's self immolation is almost frightening. The utter hatred towards any American attempt at diplomatic resolution of anything and the absolute refusal on the part of Israelis to negotiate is also amazing as is the current Israeli government's desire to embroil America in another Middle Eastern war we cannot win but that can kill off tens of thousands of American kids.

In this case you have two solutions. Hunt and slay it or shut the room and wait until it die for lack of food. than its execution.

China is concerned with ensuring its energy supply, Iran can do that, however objectionable the regime may be, but of what value is Israel to China's energy needs?

China does not want to loose huge amounts of money by withdrawing the treasury bonds and we would be in terrible finacial ruin if they did. Neither side wins here. Until the U.S. can put it's money and brains into building and manufacturing something of big value in the future, we stand to loose. The push in green technology should be #1 priority. It makes sense in a practical far sighted sense in terms of economics and security as well as the environment. There is money to be made. Even the Chinese who build another huge coal manufacturing plant a week - which the west coast shares the pollution is jumping ahead in this market.

It's been five+ years since the Iranian nuclear issue has been on the front burner as an issue for Israel. For five years, the bash Israel crowd has screamed their lungs raw at Israel's supposed war mongering. And yet, throughout this, Israel's main push has been diplomacy; with the EU, with the US, with Russia, and now with China. Israel is trying to find a peaceful resolution to this direct threat from Iran. Indeed, Iran is the only state today pushing for the extinction of another member state of the UN. But as usual, the bash Israel crowd can only find fault with Israel for seeking to defend itself. As always, they can only find fault with Israel, not offer up real solutions, or face a reality that Iran is not some peace-loving tree hugger, but a radical state (indeed, Revolutionary) bent on military adventurism.

    • no_future
    • 04.03.10
    • 15:13

US/Israel needs 9 votes and no vetoes to sanction Iran. That is, 7 no votes or one veto will kill the resolution. I wonder if the nine votes are there? Will nine of these countries go along? Especially given the possibility of sanctions leading to war or severe economic problems? China - can veto - on record as NO France - can veto - on record as YES Russia - can veto - maybe NO UK - can veto - on record as YES US - can veto - on record as YES Austria - can Germany influence? Bosnia/Herzegovina - 40% Muslim Brazil- on record as NO Gabon - Lots of poverty - can be bought? Japan - Extremely unhappy with US Lebanon - Muslim Mexico - Drug wars - will want a lot from US Nigeria - oil rich Turkey - Muslim Uganda - lots of poverty - can be bought? So far, it looks like there are possibly six no votes and one veto that can kill the resolution. Who can US/Israel count on? What back room deals will the US have to make to avoid defeat?

"As a mater of fact, they will do the same on any other subject, say zoology, and find Israel to bash." 'As a mat(t)er of fact' . That ought be easy to substantiate then. Go ahead. "It must stop wasting time with useless and expensive visits all over the world" That is what Israel did at end of May and in Early June 1967, when it sent the late FM Abba Eban all over the world to ask the leaders of countries to send a convoy of ships thru the Straits of Tiran to break the Egyptian blockade of its southern port, Eilat. The begging didn't work, and on June 6, Israel launched a pre-emptive attack. Nor, apparently, will similar begging work today. A US or even US-EU boycott is insufficient. Wonder what will happen on or about June 6 this year.

I don't think Israel has the muscle, nor desire to "teach China a lesson". When Iranian nukes will be pointed at China, and the rest of the world, the lesson will be learned, albeit, a little too late. Many people mistakenly think that the Iran nuke issue relates only to Israel. It is indeed a serious problem for Israel, but this obvious failure to stop the Iranian nuke program will haunt the rest of the world in years to come, including even you good people of Lewiston.
