Bush: My patience with Syria's Assad 'ran out a long time ago'
U.S. President denounces Damascus' 'housing of Hamas', says Syria 'needs to stay out of Lebanon.'
By Reuters Tags: George Bush Bashar Assad Annapolis conference IraqU.S. President George W. Bush told a White House press conference Thursday that his patience with Syrian President Bashar Assad had run out long ago.
"Syria needs to stay out of Lebanon," Bush said when asked whether he would be willing to talk to Assad about stabilizing Lebanon, which is caught up in a political crisis.
The Bush administration has tried to isolate Damascus diplomatically, though Syria sent representatives to the Annapolis peace conference hosted by the U.S. last month.
"My patience ran out on President Assad a long time ago," Bush said. "The reason why is because he houses Hamas, he facilitates Hezbollah, suiciders go from his country into Iraq and he destabilizes Lebanon," Bush said.
Syria has denied U.S. allegations that it is interfering in neighboring Lebanon and trying to undermine its Western-backed government. Damascus withdrew its forces from Lebanon in 2005 after a 29-year military presence.
Syria's foreign minister insisted earlier on Thursday that Damascus is trying to help resolve Lebanon's presidential crisis. Lebanon's presidency has been vacant since November 23 when the term of pro-Syrian Emile Lahoud ended. France has been leading efforts to mediate a settlement between the Western-backed governing coalition and the opposition, led by groups with close ties to Damascus.
During his speech at the conference, Bush also said he was dissatisfied with political progress in Iraq but insisted the Iraqi government was making some advances.
"There is a functioning government," Bush claimed. "Are we satisfied with the progress in Baghdad? No." But he said it was wrong to say nothing was happening and asserted that Washington would keep up pressure for efforts at national reconciliation in Iraq.

I hope someone reads "PATIENCE MY ASSAD!!!!!" and passes it around to him until he repeats it!
I was first!!!!!!! I'm surprised nobody got that one already. If you heard this after I posted this, then you'll recognize it as a Yosemite Special! PATIENCE MY ASSAD!!!!! Ha!
Bush has been involved in more war crimes than Ariel Sharon and Olmert put together! Evidently only way to get info is to waterboard him - whats good for goose is good for gander.
"The whole world is fed up with Bush." Well said. Very, very true.
No more bluffs. He's not taunting them that America's patience is running out. He knows that they know that America cannot get away with any more conflict in the region. In that speech he just gave Assad carte blanche to do whatever he wants. America will hold them accountable only in rhetoric. Scary.
It doesn't matter who is US president, whoever it is will be pro-Israel, I'm sure much to your chagrin. And much to my happiness. LOL
If I were assad, I'd be a little nervous. I can just imagine assad with that unsteady laugh he used with pelosi--he ought to be considering what Bush said, very seriously. I guess the invasion of Iraq has its payoffs, like, maybe the US means business. Ask the Germans about that one (WW I&II)--The US just lost its patience with them both times, the rest was history!
Lack of patience is a character flaw of George Bush that the US has paid for over and over again. In money, lives, and global power. Assad on the other hand, has the patience required for this region of the world. Russia and China are on the assent, while the US is in descent. Syria will smartly wait until Russia and China wage their proxy cold war in the middle east against the US before the make their move. Well after Bush is out of office, and US troops are out of Iraq. Israel shouldn't let Syria win in this war of patience. Israel should make peace with Syria now and deny Russian and China their chess piece in the upcoming proxy battles. Too bad the current Israeli leaders can't think their way out of a box, much less plan three steps ahead in a global strategic political battle. And neither can Bush.
Having seen his dreams of starting a war with Iran thwarted, the Psychopath in Chief turns his dreams towards Syria. The world will not be safe until Bush is behind bars, strapped to a gurney and with a needle in his arm.
I congratulate Assad. When the stupid Bush criticizes Assad this the proof that Assad is a clever person
Either SH-T or GET OFF THE POT, Mr President. Your incompetent leadership has done serious damage to US prestige/military in Iraq by forcing the military to fight a gentleman's war with one hand tied behind their back. Unleash the US military and go for the throat.
Does this want of patience express itself in any way other than podium tantrums?
'...The hubris is unprecedenteed in US history. I repeat, Assad is no worse and he certainly should respond to bush hyprcacy by spitting in the face that lieswhen he hiumself is Prince of Lies.' Not exactly up to your usual standard. You seem to find our president acutely upsetting. Get over it. He's just a stubborn, limited, ignorant man in the wrong place at the wrong time. On the bright side, he's spent all his political capital, and in fifteen months he'll be gone entirely. Not much chance he'll wind up on Mount Rushmore, so we can forget he ever happened and start picking up the pieces. What's more, he's pretty much single-handedly discredited Neo-Conservatism as an ideology for the future. Could be worse. Suppose we'd had an intelligent, SUCCESSFUL George Bush.
Assad is a grain in history. Syria under the Assad dynasty is significant though: it has poisoned all the surrounding countries except Turkey with its terrorism and cynicism.
America needs to put the Americans first for a change and I hope that the Americans will vote for a candidate, who will do just that. Hillary, in my opinion, is just the right person for the job; she will reform the healthcare and make it available to ALL the Americans equally. She hopefully will also reform the public school system and raise its standards so that more poor Americans, especially the black, will have a better chance to finish high-school, make it to college or other and climb on their social ladder, which will also bring down crime and keep them out of jails, where 60% of the prisoners are black. America has also her tremendous debt to tackle. AS for Bush's legacy, which is a mess and which has made the world turn against America, me included; America will not pull out immediately from war, but by the end of her first term in office, she probably will bring the boys back home. Because unlike George, Hillary will work for this goal and keep focused on doing so.
It is so funny to hear the blame shift over and over and over as to who Israel claims is the puppet master over the Hezb and Hamas terrorists. Blame Hassan Nasrallah for everything! He sends weapons to Hamas. Kill him and all the problems disappear. No, next it is Iran who is the puppet master of both of them. Bomb Iran! Wait! Russia is to blame, Putin is restarting proxy battles with the west through Iran/Syria/Hamas/Hezb/Lebanon. Putin is the bad guy. Now today Hezbollah and Hamas are Syria's fault. No peace with Syria because of Hezb. and Hamas. But don't forget blaming ALL Palestinians for electing Hamas, even though Hamas won with less than a simple majority of votes. (That means less than half of the Palestinian voters voted for Hamas. In essence, punish the majority of Pals because the candidate THEY voted for lost...) What a great Israeli scam. Just shift the blame whenever it is politically convenient to whomever you want to blame at any moment.
"When it comes to Mr. Bush we can ask only for one thing: 4 more years!" No Human Rights Group could want 4 more years of Bush as president. Maybe you mean he should be sentenced to 4 more years in Guantanamo. Or maybe you missed out a 0. 40 years, in the prison at the Hague for the illegal and unnecessary slaughter in Iraq.
"Bush wouldn`t even know that Hezbollah arose after Israel`s 1982 invasion of southern Lebanon. It proably wouldn`t exist but for Israel`s occupation there." Hizbullah was created by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, and neither "Israel" nor "Zionists" appears in their original manifesto in connection with a presence on Lebanese soil. the only mention is of the wholesale destruction of Israel, which they refuse to spell out by name: "our struggle will end only when this entity [Israel] is obliterated." By all accounts, Hizbullah should have ceased to exist as an armed entity when the UN recognized the full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000. It's existance as an armed para-military organization is in fact illegal, as was its cross-border attack on Israel in 2006. You laugh at Bush and call him an idiot, but I think you misoverestimate your own intelligence! Were it not for Carter, Iran, the parent of Hizbullah, might never have slipped into Islamic fundamentalism.
Warmongering little idiot. He's realised he's not going to be allowed to go and kill Iranians, so now he's after the Syrians. There's no statue of limitations on war-crimes, so I remain optimistic that someone will eventually arrest and try him.
Take a look at the time difference between your reply to my post, four minutes! By the way ?, how good are you at counting the provocative deeds done by elite that have given birth to such terrorist activities?
I don't know Alicia. I generally do understand zero zip about American women, but what I understand about American policies is: - She has to make sure she is not soft on crime and terrorism, so she will be backing Israel more then Bush. - She has to win back the Jewish vote for the Democrats, so she will be backing Israel more then Bush. - She can't bring the troops home from Iraq, she will be defaitist and responsible for the wars that will begin (Kurds, Soenni's, Shi'ites), and therefore she will be backing Israel more then Bush. - She is the woman that stayed with her husband when he was smoking cigars, and therefore she will be backing Israel more then Bush. - She is a New Yorker now, she's half Jewish already, and therefore she will be backing Israel more then Bush. Democrats are lousy cowards when it comes to the foreign policy of the USA, they have no vision.
Bush: My patience with Assad 'ran out a long time ago', but Assad will still be in power long after Bush has been put out to pasture.
Are you saying the Arabs must be given an offer they cannot refuse, if they want to hold up their thrustworthyness/credits (???) in the world and then just wait till they blow it in the world? Yes, give Syria the Golan and wait for the rockets from the Golan, and then take the Golan forever. For the same reason, give Hamas /Abbas all pre-1967 land and wait for the rockets from there to take it forever. Give the world a reason to side with you.
JH, the true OPPRESSORS are the Islamic fashists and their terrorists, and Bush doesn't back them at all.
When exactly did you stop counting the casualties of terrorists' dirty attacks? Was it when you started drinking again?
he sure has plenty of 'patients' - the casualties of his dirty wars!
Bush backs the occupiers and oppressors one hundred percent, no wonder many of you love him. He's a man of little intellect, no curiosity and a complete lack of understanding history. I should send him a copy of Ilan Pappe's "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine." When will you Israaelis confess your many crimes against the Palestinian people? Long live Hamas, you won't be able to murder them all as you'd like. The world press won't tolerate it, so negotiate...there's a constructive thought even you occupiers should be able to figure out. Your military will never be defeated, the US won't permit it but you could have peace...unless it interfers too much with your land theft on the West Bank.
so she has my hopes up for a peaceful and a socially more just America. Voice of Reason: it is time to build again in the American politics NOT to tear down! It is time for America to become a just nation again that gives hope for the rest of the world and claims back her old position as the leader, we used to look up to with admiration. I can hardly wait for the following 13 months to pass by quickly with as little damage as possible. Keep your fingers crossed!
If we give up the OUR Golan, Syria will have to be destroyed with the next stupid move the Syrians have in plan already.
Your word in God's ear, my friend - it is too nice to be on the good and winning side and see em losers whining ... ;-) Have a nice one!
What YOU forget to mention is the fact, that millions and millions of Iraquis are happy with Bush's American actions to protect the civilians in Iraq. Who are you to condemn them for it? Let me guess: Just a singled out stupid worm with nothing else to say nor to decide? (Positive answer preferred!)
I don't see your point. Are you saying that when you hear the word "intellectual" you reach for your gun? (Don't remember if Hitler or Mao said that, but whatever). It is not enough that Bush is right about certain things, and being smarter would not turn him into Reinhard Heydrich. Many Americans are both smart AND good, and they deserve the office more than he ever did.
I never heard Bush telling the world how smart he is - but those who claim over and over agaion that he isn't, think to be very clever themselves. Well, you're not, not really, really not.
Not clever = good?
4 more years!
If "Bush is an idiot" then you should be even more ashamed of yourself to be beaten by such: What kinda idiots are you and your whining pity self?!
But George, if we don't share your opinions, this doesn't mean we fall automatically out of love with you!
Bush, for the person he is and the position he was voted in, is doing a great job - so some terror-lovers hate him, it couldn't be worse. Our IDF, for the young guys and girls they are and the hard job they are within their duties up to, are doing a hell of a good job - so some Jew-haters hate em even more, it couldn't be worse. Islamic terrorists, for the weird and mislead scum they are, while whining during a war they called upon themselves, are some bad losers - so some rightous people kill more of them than actually planned to die, and day by day and night by night it hits them even worse! The Jews and Bush will survive them freaking islamic terrorists - not the other way around, inshallah!
Since Plato, western philosphy has wanted to see the following equation: clever = morally good. Look up the Wannsee Conference (January 1942, Berlin), where the administrative murder of millions was plotted by numerous Doctors of Philosophy, Law, religion/Theology etc. Then come back to me and convince me that clever=good. I'm waiting for you.
"He houses Hamas, he facilitates Hezbollah" - And the US supports the illegal actions of Israel on Palestinian territory, its in no position to judge. "Suiciders go from his country into Iraq" - More fighters go into Iraq from Saudi Arabia than from any other state but of course we here nothing of this He forgets to mention that millions of Iraqis are in Syria at the moment fleeing violence in Iraq since the Americans took over. I dont see the US offering alternate residence to them.
Can someone please tell me why a career in medicine in part of the past of so many disordered leaders and terrorists in the Arab world? Rantisi. Assad the Younger. Habash. The Al-Qaida #2 Zahawiri (Egyptian - close enough). And it's not tied to religion, exactly - you'd think they'd all be insane Sheikhs like Yassin, but they're not - they're often-Western-educated men. Does this happen in other cultures? Israelis don't don't seem to favour doctors to lead them, do they? Are Africa's demagogues trained in medicine? Thanks for any thoughtful response.
Unlike the dynastic tyrants like Assad, Bush is a legitimate leader of the democratic nation. In 13 months, he will no longer be in that position, however there is no indication that his successor will have a significantly different attitude towards tyrants like Assad, the bloody theocracy in Iran, or Islamic Terrorists like Hamas. When he took office, Sadaam Hussein ruled as a tyrant and Bin Laden was openly running terrorist camps under the protection of the bizarre Taliban regime. Sadaam his now dead, as are his sons, Bin Laden is hiding in a cave somewhere, and the Taliban are trying to survive in the wilds of Afghanistan. No one president, even with the power of the US military, can wipe out all the evil tyrants in a single administration, but that "incompetent idiot" Bush made a pretty good start. Let's see if his successor can do anywhere near as well.
You make it sound like Hamas is a bunch of choir boys. They are murderous thugs. And yes, they deserve to die. FYI, a good chunk of your 5000 dead Palestinians were terrorist murderers. Many, many, innocent lives were saved by their elimination. Please, spare us the sob story. These are NOT freedom fighters. These are the lowest form of civilization. Middle East peace depends on the extinction and destruction of Hamas.
"My patience ran out on President Assad a long time ago." When was the period when Bush's 'patience' had not 'run out'? I take it there was some honeymoon period -- but I can't place it. Help me out here...
Bush should waterboard Assad and give more cluster bombs to Israel to finish the job
True, Jake, true. harsh words but look at whom they are directed. A normal Texas ranchers? A slap on the back Eli displaced from Maine to TX? No, Jake. Here we have a world leader, a man who lied to a nation, brought about the death of over 4000 young men and women for nothing, excpet to achieve his flawed vision, who allowed the covert work of Valerie Plame to be exposed and lied about that, who now may be caught in another lie of knowing or condoning criminal activity vis a vis the destruction of CIA tapes, who has done more than any world leader to keep policies in place that are destroying the planet and all of this while he smiles and pretneds to be the paradigm of Gods love which he brings to the rest of the world. The hubris is unprecedenteed in US history. I repeat, Assad is no worse and he certainly should respond to bush hyprcacy by spitting in the face that lieswhen he hiumself is Prince of Lies.
Bush is an intellectually lazy, morally indifferent, incompetent president who never should have made it to high office. That being said, he is completely right about Syria, and only his stupidity allows him to speak these truths. His comments are undiplomatic and probably don't help the situation any more than his "axis of evil" speech did.
"This curse will soon be baack on his ranch" "I hope at least Assad wouldhave enough repect to spit in his face, though bush deserves worse." I guess your lessons in humility, meekness, and kindness are only reserved for us veangeful Old-Testamenters. But when it comes to the people that you don't like, its whole different ball game, yessiree. They might as well all go to a lake of fire and fry.
How surprising Mr. Bush that Syria would give sanctuary to those with the integrity to resist Israel's immoral and illegal occupation, like the members of Hamas. Bush wouldn't even know that Hezbollah arose after Israel's 1982 invasion of southern Lebanon. It proably wouldn't exist but for Israel's occupation there. There was a time too when America was very grateful that Syria hepled stabilize Lebanon. What an amazing moran Bush is, has he ever read an, authoritative, book about Middle East history, no way.
is the right guy. Hope we can get another strong leader in office, not someone who will give away the farm and leave us open to attack.
Time to put feet in motion here. Assad and his close friends want Israel relocated. Bush knows this, but does not want to start WWIII. However, one of the ME leaders will, so someone with GUTS better put brains in gear and deal with Assad, Meshal, Haniyeh, Ahmadinejad, Putin, et al, before it's too late. Olmert--forget it. If Bush won't do it, then Israel better get a PM who is ready to go.... Take out--take out your enemy!!
The mistake of those alike you is, that you all over sudden try desperately to talk (lies) about Bush when he talks truth about Assad, eg. - in a very stupid way you miss the subject, nothing more.
Why do you complain on this talkback in Israel. Phone him up. it's your president not mine...
Condi is one step removed from Speaker Pelosi when it comes to Syria. Commending Assad for his condemnation of the latest assassination murder in Lebanon when Assad or flunkies of his actually killed the General is absurd and sends a weak signal to people who only understand very strong signals. I am waiting for Condi to compare Assad to Thomas Jefferson as arafat was compared to George Washington. Get rid of your Secretary of State. She looked hopeful 3 years ago but has become a dhimmi and dragged American heros throught the mud by comparing them to Arab terrorists.
The more I look at those who hate Bush, the more I like him - he is an original and a hero!
Syria hasn't started two wars. Syria didn't set up a concentration/torture camp on an island. Syria isn't impeding the world in global warming. Syria isn't building new settlements on land the entire world recognizes as occupied land. Hamas - although Israel may not like them anymore than the Palestinians like the Irgun, Leti, and Stern Gangs - is a legitimate resistance organization. Sure, there can be discussions about the use of suicide bombings to kill 500 Israeli citizens - just as there can be a debate about the humanity of the IDF in killing close to 5,000 Palestinians in the same time period. The main point which doesn't come out in the media - is that they are not wild terrorists, they don't side with Al Quaeda, and they don't target Americans - they only want their homes and land back. So whats so wrong with Syria allowing them a place to be in exile? Should they just execute these poor souls who have lived a life in exile so Jews can have a homeland?
The whole world is fed up with Bush. With what moral authority is Bush speaking in demanding Syria stay out of Lebanon while he had over 160000 of US tropps in Iraq , 20000 US troups in Afghanistan , 40000 In korea , etc. etc...????
This curse will soon be baack on his ranch and sooner is not soon enough. Everything this liar touches is cursed. He has no patience for Assad, but he still has lots for ole ehudi, who lied to his face when he he committed to building no more colonies. Thhey both share and amazing capacity a talent really for lying and hypocracy, though I think bush excels in this category. One can only think that when ehudie made the prmise to georgie that georgie gave him a quick wink, since he's in on the sham as well. But this one takes the cake! He's lost patience with Assad. I hope at least Assad wouldhave enough repect to spit in his face, though bush deserves worse.
How would an Alawite feel today in Syria? Not too good I presume. Better pray bad uncle B. is not coming to save his presidencial legacy.
It is not for anyone who leads a great country like America to "run out of patience". It is the duty of a leader to stick with the matters in hand, concentrate on them, see how things can be improved, persist in your endeavours, try alternative approaches, never give up. For Bush to say that he has "run out of patience" tells you a lot about the infantile nature of the man.
Bush Said :"Syria needs to stay out of Lebanon," Why does not this twat learn to keep his mouth shut, and keep his dirty nose out of the countries of the world. When will this mad dog G Bush stop barking like a wild dog ??. It is about time that this cowboy and his neo cons cronies are locked up in a mental institution. This twat is a danger to the human race.
u guys say what u wanna say about bush, but he threw the syrians out of lebanon and rolled over the tyrant sadam hussein and gave u israelies the chance to get rid of hezbullah but u ruined it. u israelies are the first to thk bush, he's the best supporter to israel u ever had in the white house. thk u mr. bush and may god bless u.
yea, well, Iran is a bit too strong - especially with its friends behind it - so the Chickenhawk is looking for a smaller, weaker country after Israel let him down so badly. when Bush, with Blair, were howling for Israel to continue what rapidly became the worst PR disaster in Israel's history - the attack on Lebanon - and then to continue into Syria (no really, they did), I can only say that for me the notion that Bush is a friend of Israel is one that 'ran out a long time ago'.
Once in a while, he'll say what he is really thinking. And usually, it's something that I would have said.
Trust the fact when it is proven that they are lying and close to a bomb, then you will hear Bush or our next President making noises again. Duh!
Bush has no moral ground to stand and tell anyone in the world what they should do, after having destroyed the country of Iraq and slaughtered thousands of innocent Iraqis. Why should any sane person listen to him??
The USA-Jewish cabal made him say this. Some might think looking at the picture above that he's speaking into two microphones but to the trained eye you can see that in fact it's two Uzis bent into shape. What a clever lot those Jews are.
Its election time in America, The neo-cons are history, and so is any talk of attacking Iran.
