Bil'in protesters dismantle section of West Bank separation barrier
Hundreds mark five years since the first weekly anti-fence protest near the Palestinian village.
By Anshel Pfeffer Tags: Israel news IDFDemonstrators participating in rally protesting the Israel's West Bank separation fence dismantled a section of the barrier on Friday, during a rally marking five years since the beginning of the Bil'in protests.
About a thousand people took part in the rally, which was also attended by Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Palestinian parliament member Mustafa Barghouti as well as Fatah strongman Nabil Shaath.
During the rally several protesters managed to cross the barrier, placing a Palestinian flag on top of an Israel Defense Forces outpost, while others dismantled a 30-meter section of the fence itself.
IDF sources claimed that the fence's repair could cost several hundred thousand NIS.
Israeli security forces were aligned in rear positions to allow the demonstrators to protest in a "non-violent fashion," but began using dispersal instruments as soon as protesters commenced hurling stones.
A source in the IDF's GOC Central Command told Haaretz that the incident proved that the IDF was willing to allow non-violent protest, but that it was clear that some of the participants act violently, hurling stones and causing thousands of sheckels in damages to the fence.

they won a ruling in the anti Palestinian Israeli courts for the dismantling of the fence and the returning of land internationaly recognised as palestinian
Certain influencial Jews have also done their best to offer nothing construct, but have perfected a skill of instigating and inflaming the population. To wit: Rabbi Tvzi Yehuda Kook, Israels first chief rabbi taught that non-Jews living under Jewish law in Eretz Yisrael must either be enslaved as water carriers and wood hewers or banished or exterminated. The Chairman of the Jewish Rabbinic Council said, there is no such thing as enemy civilians in war time, 1,000 non-Jewish lives are not worth a Jews fingernail. In June 2009 Hasidic Rabbi Manis Friedman called on Israelis to kill Palestinian men, women, children and cattle: destroy their holy sites. Rabbi David Batsri called Arabs, "a blight, a devil, a disaster...donkeys... we must ask ourselves why God didnt create them to walk on all fours. The answer is, they are needed to build and clean."
"The fence as a barrier has been effective." It has been effective for two reasons: it provided security; and it served as an illegal land grab. It would have been fully as effective if it were built on Israeli territory. It should not be puzzling to anyone that there are protests against the barrier, The UN International Court of Justice has ruled it to be illegal. Therefore, because it is in violation of international law, the international community of nations disapproves of the barrier. How decent of Israel, it allows protests to take place against an illegal wall on illegally occupied land. Absolute saints!
"Thanks to that wall... no more killing of civilians. Only right wingers... and extremist are against the wall." You are quite wrong. The UN International Court of Justice is against the wall, and has ruled that the wall is illegal. So, since the wall is in violation of international law, the entire international community is against the wall. The wall would be just as effective if it were built on Israeli territory. As it is now, it has two purposes: security, and an illegal land grab.
Why does jordan always distence themselves from the pals. Can someone please tell me how old is the heshemite kingdom? Where are there origins from?
"Like the Japanese govt. who charged their citizens who are physically attacking their country`s whaling vessels. These Japanese are being charged with treason and assualt" Well done the Japanese who are protesting Japan's disgusting whaling practices! Glad to read that there are some Japanese who are making protests against this barbaric action...
"Sounds like he got what he deserved for stepping into a war zone to meddle in Israel`s affairs" It was a non-violent protest, not a war zone. And I'm sure Tristan Anderson's family will appreciate your humanitarian attitude. Let's hope they never see your heartless post.
so far. Good, lets all get together and build a bigger and stronger wall. Im a fence man by trade I'll teach you Palistinians how to make a strong fence, to keep the Israelis out of Gaza.
101 u say show us the pals tolerance. well just because some of your IDF have some humane in them does not make isrl tolerant. but exactly how is it that you want the pals to show tolerance? especially when you keep ripping down their homes or you bomb them to oblivian, or take their land? exactly what is it u want to see as tolerance? that they say its ok to take what is not yours for yourselves? sorry u r wrong in thinking that the terrorist acts of isrl should be tolerated. if it happened to you would u not fight? reason is not your strong suit is it?
First only a week ago there was an article about the daily protests in Jerusalem when one of the leaders was arrested because his permit was denied that day. So it would appear the norm is toleration since those Jerusalem protests having been going on for couple years. Second, the fence has become a tourist attraction and daily protests are also held at the fence and have been going on for quite some time. Both of these DAILY protests happen mostly without incident. Proof positive of Israeli toleration of dissent. While at the same time disproving both your posts. Sorry, your both wrong accept it. Both of the protests I mentioned are daily yet we rarely here of any problems. That's called toleration, my friends, something the Palestinians lack as well as Israel's neighbors, BTW your writing dissent on these talkbacks, again toleration. CASE CLOSED, YOUR WRONG! Show us the Pal equal to Haaretz which allows dissent. TOLERATION
-Absolute Sweden.. they wouldn't act that way if they didn't have a reason, you forget they lost their livelihoods when isrl decided to take away their land. I back the freedom fighters I do not support isrls terror tactics. -Zvi merovic of toronto why do u say we in your post? -Dan. lol your funny, either way isrl will find a way to take more land, it will not change a thing, it is better to live fighting for your rights than to lay down and die for nothing. -KimN. Amen to that. -Mark from Georgia. yeah right. they let it happen, because than they could say what u just did. -L.B,, so are you saying you do not want to live in peace with the arabs? collective punishment is against international law, or do those laws not apply to isrl? sheesh.
What is someone with the name of Tristan Anderson (a Scandinavian name) doing protesting in Judea? Sounds like he got what he deserved for stepping into a war zone to meddle in Israel's affairs.
Jeff, do not apply for a position as a history professor. Ditto for law professor. What "claims?" Where are the deeds to prove that any one of the European, American, Ethiopian, etc. immigrants had an ancestor who owned land in Palestine? And what took so damn long? Why did the immigration begin in the nineteenth c., why not sooner? In the meantime, the original natives (throughout conquests and invasions, many remained, changing religions, they are the Palestinians) stayed and endured the various occupations. Jews did not begin arriving in large numbers until after the Ottomans had been expulsed in 1917. Your facile and naive "history lesson" is full of abysmal gaps.
hi jeff, are you kiwi and you are talking about occuping????what about the indigenous people of new zealand.you will have the moral right to say anything like that if you leave new zealand to the indiginous people. as well , the jews were expelled from israel 2000 years ago by the romans and not muslims as you said!!islams dates from the 6th century!!
come on, israel with all its technology can not offer a better fence than this so easly break down. or what is the problem,? why do they let them do this? if israel realy wants it can protect itself and its borders. but something have changed in the jewish society.. something bad, that will eventually be the fall of the jewish people not just in israel but in the whole world...
while i was in the west bank i went to every friday demostration in bilin. one day while there were not many journalist there (17th april 2009), a good palestinian man was murdered by the IDF while he was carrying a kite. this soldier, nearly a year later is not in prison and he will never be. we tried to help baseem while he was blooding in the floor and the IDF where still shooting tear gas at us and sound bombs. i dont think this is much diferent at what happened in iran after the elections. the people of bilin have the right to demonstrate against this wall that israel has built on their land. peace.
on these radical left wing Israelis who join these protests. Like the Japanese govt. who charged their citizens who are physically attacking their country's whaling vessels. These Japanese are being charged with treason and assualt. It is one thing to protest peacefully which every Israeli citizen has the right to, they do not have the right to cause physical and fiscal damage. Throw them in jail where they belong.
Israel should deduct the cost of repairing fence from the tax money it transfers to the Palestinians. As for Kiwi girl, I agree Palestinians should live in peace in their own land however they want to reocupy Israel. It is the Palestinians who are occupiers. After the Jews deafeat 2000 years ago the land was eventually occupied by the Palestinians who settled on the land. The Jews never gave up claim to this land, and were able to libirate their land 60 years ago. The Jews are ready to give part of the land to Palestinians but the Palestinians want the true owners of the land out and they want the right to keep occupying the whole land of Israel
Absolutely right!! Now let's stop complimenting ourselves, make a partial peace with the West Bank and see Hamas isolated in its refusal to celebrate independence. It's also Israelis pulling down the fence!!
The protesters dismantling of the barrier was just an assist since the IDF apparently didn't have the manpower to carry out the Israeli court's order to demolish and move the barrier. The IDF must have appreciated the helping hand; they didn't shoot anybody in the head with teargas canisters this time.
The people of Bi'lin and people of Palestine will be victorious and are cheered on by the entire world!
What a pathetic posting.
The Israeli army seems to think the villagers should worry about damaging a fence which is illegally fencing off and retaining for Israeli only settlement half of their village lands and farms. And Mc Queen, these people are very brave. They face overwhelmingly superior military force every Friday and sometimes pay with their lives. One of their leaders was killed in May 09 by a high velocity tear gas cannister. You also don't mention the constant Israeli military incursions into the villages late at night, terfifying children and arbirtrarily detaining villagers who are then tried under martial law.
And what are you calling propaganda? You're the one feeding us a BS line about the Israeli troops not being able to do anything. This is the FIRST time I've ever heard of Israeli troops standing back. The NORM is tear gas, rubber bullets, and many times live fire. And what Kalil said? It doesn't take a genious to figure out what fuels the protests. There's a direct correlation between where the protests take place, and where the fence makes land grabs that most directly affect the local palestinians.
McQueen 5 : The film "Bil'in My Love" by Israeli Shai Carmeli Pollack shows just what is so brave about the people of Bil'in. It's worth watching.
Hail to the brave people of Bil'in !
empty gas cannisters? Looked like the latter from the TV pictures I saw.
"Israeli security forces were aligned in rear positions to allow the demonstrators to protest in a "non-violent fashion," Maybe the soldiers were cowering because they didn't have enough ammunition to shoot everyone. "IDF sources claimed that the fence's repair could cost several hundred thousand NIS. " GOOD! The fence shouldn't be on Palestinian land. Check out the YouTube video of the protest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quSVqqEao4c
The only one with sense. from 1 through 9
"A source in the IDF's GOC Central Command told Haaretz that the incident proved that the IDF was willing to allow non-violent protest,..." Tell that to Tristan Anderson who during the weekly protest in Bil?in last March was struck in the forehead by a high velocity teargas canister fired directly at him by an Israeli soldier. Tristan suffered catastrophic brain damage and never will recover. He lies in a hospital bed to this day.
Isreal pays for all the money lost on the farms in bilin
"Yet Israel is attacked while demonstrating its toleration of dissent." "Toleration of dissent?" Who are you trying to kid? Escalation of the conflict has always been a tactic used by Israel to undermine and destroy this form of mass popular protest. The Israel government is scared to death of type of protest. This is not unlike the reaction to civil rights marchers 50 years ago in the U.S. The tactics used by the Israeli military are very similar to those used police in the U.S. South except Israel has taken a giant step further. Acts against Palestinians include, mass arrests and detention of protesters, beating with batons, teargas, concussion grenades, water cannons, spraying protesters with sewage, rubber coated bullets, and live ammunition. Another tactic for ?crowd control? that has been employed numerous times is the use of live, small caliber .22 rimfire ammunition fired at the legs of protesters.
This time they didn't shoot a protester in the head with a high speed tear gas canister. The IDF only tolerates protest from Jews, not Arabs in Bilin.
The protesters, McQueen, were helping carry out an order of the Israeli court that ordered the IDF to dismantle and move the barrier. The law-challenged IDF apparently thought, as usual, that a court order was just a suggestion since it came from the Israeli high court. The court didn't give the IDF decades to comply this time.
But this "toleration" you mention is a FIRST! It probably only took place because Israel was aware that Fayyad and company would be in attendence, and it wanted to avoid a confrontation that might lead to bad media internationally. Which means your tout about Israel is really not worthy of touting, because the norm is that it does not exist.
The weekly protests in Bil'in are 100% nonviolent. Despite that fact, some of these very BRAVE protestors have been murdered by immoral members of the IDF who are permitted to kill innocent Arabs with impunity.
Why does Israel put up with these terrorists? They should have fired upon them when the starting destroying the fence, and not with rubber bullets!
The security barrier is one of the best things Israel has done in years. It should have been built way sooner. There is no way to tell exactly how many innocent Israeli lives it has saved. Don't worry about what the world thinks. Just worry about your survival and defending your population against a savage enemy. And for all the Israel haters, good day .
Israel allows protests against it policies on a daily basis and thrives on self criticism in an open and free press. Unlike its neighbors Iran who murder, arrest and intimidate its protesters, Hamas who use summary executions against its opposition, Egypt where its illegal to criticize its leadership and a blogger can be arrested for writing against the government policy, Hezbollah who executed there people without trials after 2005 war for alleged collaboration. Yet Israel is attacked while demonstrating its toleration of dissent.
and to all the Israeli and International human rights supporters who stand in peaceful witness with the Palestinians in Bil'in every week.
the fence will one day fall, and Palestinians will again live on their ancient lands. Viva Palestina!!!
Keep up the good work! The world supports you! Now, pull down the rest of the wall!! This wall is destined for the trash pile, just like the Berlin Wall..
They are out there often using violent tactics, knowing full well that the Israeli troops can do nothing for fear of the reaction in the press
You provide no evidence for your propaganda, but that never stops the anti-Israel crowd, now does it?
Into the the west bank. Maybe then the protest will end.
I love it when the real people stand up to corruption. We in the west need to grow some, Power to the Palestinians....
Now they can freely explode themselves inside Israel
You have many supporters in the USA.
Pull the fence back along the Green Line and you won't have these problems.
Keep up the good work so the world will never forget. The tide is turning to get your land and dignity back after all of these years.
Like the Berlin wall, like the apartheid regime in S.A. History will go on and peoples will be free
The Israeli court said move it. The IDF should be happy for the free help. Move it off the village land. Put it on the green line and the Palestinians will help move it.
I guess you are cheering that there have been no terror attacks since the Fence was installed. Now that a small fraction was temporarily torn, your heart is bubbling. Just thinking of the resumption of terror excites all. Don't cheer so fast. The repair is happening, as we speak. The innocents in Israel will continue will continue to be shielded by the fence. Thank G-d innocent lives will be spared.
The IDF should arrest these vandals. Lets move the fence another 10 miles into the West Bank to show the vandals that their demonstrations are futile.
The Palestinians have the right to send suicide bombers to kill innocent Israeli civilians at will and this bothersome security barrier is keeping them from doing so. How dare the Israelis defend their citizens against these peace-seeking human bombs, these "heros" who kill women and children for the noble cause? How dare the Israelis expect to have continued security and freedom of movement the way they've had it since the barrier went up? The chutzpah.
Since Israel had decided to move the fence, they thought they could get Palestinians to do the demolition for free by directing their protests towards the condemned portions of the barrier. True fiscal responsibility from the Israeli government.
"the IDF was willing to allow non-violent protest, but that it was clear that some of the participants act violently, hurling stones and causing thousands of sheckels in damages to the fence" ... "but began using dispersal instruments as soon as protesters commenced hurling stones" Funny how IDF and border guards were injured by stone throwing settler youth three days ago yet there was no use of "dispersal instruments". There certainly is no double standard here!
As the fence illegal must at cost of the Israeli government demolished in the same way she destroys the so named illegal Houses of Palestinians. Demonstrators have just only do the begin. Dear Israelis please turn off the rest. This should be your part toward peace
While Iran arrests, murders and intimidates its protesters, Israel allows dissent mostly without incident. These sorts of protests go on in Israel almost daily. Whether it's protests at the fence, Jerusalem or wherever they are allowed, legal, reported openly in the press and tolerated. Israel is a state that has always thrived on self criticism. Unlike its neighbors i.e. Egypt arresting the blogger or anyone who verbally attacks political leaders, Iran murdering protesters, Hamas intimidating journalists with summary executions of opposition or Hezbollah executing suspects in collaboration without trials, again Israel shows itself the only true Democracy in the region filled with thug dictators.
Give the land back to the Palestinians, end the occupation and learn to share. Shame on Israel for the daily human rights abuses, land grabs and institutionalized hatred. Reconcilliation will take even longer if you do not teach your children justice and peace for all.
"the rally, which was also attended by Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Palestinian parliament member Mustafa Barghouti" due to the involvement of the above, deduct whatever costs the state of israel incurred(security and repair work) from taxes that are to be given the p.a.!
This is what Ronald Regan would have said.
this is what israel is about "democracy"
on the planet! several hundred thousand shekels to replace 30 meters? why not abide by the high courts ruling and move it? or is the law not relevant anymore...
armed factions shoud stopt wasting their time and start promoting this peaceful struggle which soon will success. Togather palestinian with jews will manage to stop the invasion and zionism.
This is good news.
OIC-Arab League war-terror aggressions are not about territories but about the Sovereignty of the Democratic Jewish State of Israel .
The monies for the repairs should be deducted from any future remittances to the PA. After all, those two faced weasels are funding these "peaceful" protests.
This fence is bad news to Israel. This is going to become "The Wall". You will hear about it in the future.
"Palestinian standing near IDF soldiers near Bil'in," at one glance, says a thousand words against the Israeli occupation 2010.
"A source in the IDF's GOC Central Command told Haaretz that the incident proved that the IDF was willing to allow non-violent protest, but that it was clear that some of the participants act violently, hurling stones and causing thousands of sheckels in damages to the fence." Oh no. Imagine - damaging the fence. Such wanton vandalism. Savages.
...and nice to see Israel excercising some restraint in terms of retailiation. Makes a nice change.
and let palestinians obtain their deserved freedom. stop israeli settlement expansion.
Make these vandals responsible for the damage. Charge them the rebuilding costs, plus extra cost for the need for more IDF soldiers while rebuilding. Charge also the NGOs. they have plenty of money from european and other antisemites.
This is the real future of Israel the protesters are 100% right there is no future in closing ourselves like a paranoid tank we must be a part of where we live! and we will, sooner or later
Uh, Arab guy in NYC, if it weren't for the Palestinians war mongering, and always choosing violence over peace, and killing Jews over nationhood, there WOULDN"T be a separation barrier. Choices have consequences, even for Palestinians.
to stand unarmed before Israeli soldiers who have helped steal your land and who have no compunction about shooting you. Too bad the report included the usual lies that IDF didn't attack until stones were thrown. I been many times in Bil'in and have never seen Palestinians throw stones until after the teargas and bullets start to fly. God bless the peaceful people of Bil'in and those who stand with them -- internationals and Israelis.
Bring more people next time!! dismantle the barrieron Palestinian land let Israel build it in their own land! God with you all Palestinian God bless you!!
Hail to the courageous people of Bil'in !
to the State of Israel. exchange of population is only solution. With that permanent borders will be maintained and hostile palestinian entity will be kept out of Israel for GOOD!!! Palestinian leadership does nothing constructive but they certainly perfected a skill of instigating and inflaming their population- making a great career out of uneducated perpetually angry regular pals.
Removal of the barrier from Village Property has been ordered. If it's damaged, too bad. It never should have been there in the first place. And since removal is being stalled, damage should be accepted with grace.
And it will, every centimeter of it will disappear one day. The protests will not end until justice is done for Palestine.
This woman is a real human hero!
I suspect zero. So the fence used as a barrier, and needed because the Pals attacked and killed Israeli's has been effective. It would NOT have been needed if the Pals wanted to live in peace and had discontinued suicide and other kinds of attacks targeting civilians. Given this history it's puzzling that anyone would support these protests against the fence. But speaks highly of Israel, allowing these protests to take place, mostly without incident. Of course the Pals start the rock throwing hoping to evoke a response from Israel and hoping that Israel will make a mistake...over respond...so they can gain a PR victory against Israel. So far Israel has not fallen into that trap, good job!
Never ever give up you fight Bil'in protesters
Arabia, Egypt, and the rest of the elightened Arab world. Some of you might get hurt (slightly).
Keep it up
Maybe if they behaved peacefully they would actually get somewhere. Ghandi did.
http://www.bilin-village.org/
'A source in the IDF's GOC Central Command told Haaretz that the incident proved that the IDF was willing to allow non-violent protest...' This is a lie. New military regulations passed today saw soldiers stopping Israeli protesters from entering Bi'ilin. Hundreds were prevented from going, under threat of arrest; ID numbers were written down, etc.
Good work, the more of this aggressive land-grabbing wall/fence is down, the better. If Israel wants a protective border fence, just build it inside Israel along the border, not on stolen foreign territory.
Dismantled of part of security wall is due to the high court decision. Like it or not depite all the problems in Israel the independent Judiciary system is above the army. Thanks to tha wall we do not have any more busses blowing up and kiling civilians. Only the right wingers and the extremist palestinians are against the wall.
How about some photos of pal kids with puppies or mickey mouse dolls?? Got any of those in your achives?? You make me sick, whay dont you all pack up your old kit bags and move your sorry selves to Gaza and bring your vaseline!! Bye
Question: Why do Haaretz and Anshel Pfeffer use the language: "Demonstrators in a rally" to describe a mob of rioting violent people throwing rocks at human beings? Answer: Propaganda overrides accurate journalism.
bring down that wall of shame, disperse the fraudulent, illegal occupiers. palestinians must have the right to have their own independence, and let israel face justice for all its crimes.
residents of Bil'in should sue the Israeli government to collect rental for all land that is inside the Israeli barrier. The rent should start from the time of the construction of the barrier and continue until the barrier is either taken down or moved to the Green Line. The rent should be set at Israeli market prices.
costed equivalent of many times over yearly income of the average Israeli . Worse ,now that pal hoodlums were allowed to do it they'll arrive in greater numbers during their next friday's ritual : Lend a Hand to Terrorists ,Dismantle the Anti-Terror Barrier
to say keep up the good work is easy. You and yourlikes provokes this poor fellows, they act violently then get killed or hurt. Who is responsible for this fact. Israel, Palies or the International provocators like you. Get your hands off from here. At least they wouldn't get hurt. Aby
Just singing peace songs and holding up posters. And then for no reason, without warning, the evil murderous IDF attacked. Oh, the injustice of it all!
But what are you doing?? Don't show these in the cameras!! Put these fence up again fast!! If not, how will we obtain the millions of dollars in help?
Nice to see some of that Wall go down!
Good to hear. Israel only understands direct action as a form of protest.
indeed IDF is the most humanistic army in the world.
Bilin lives!
Keep up the good work!
